NEW AI CAN ANALYSE CROP PERFORMANCE

New artificial intelligence (AI) is now able to interpret drone imagery to help farmers analyse broad acre crops.

N

ew artificial intelligence (AI) is now able to interpret drone imagery to help farmers analyse broad acre crops. Skippy Scout version 2.5, the mobile phone app created by Drone Ag, has been developed with unique AI to interpret images taken by a drone. “It was always our intention to develop the software to this stage and we are thrilled to have it ready for users to take advantage of this season,” says Drone Ag founder Jack Wrangham. Automated analysis of drone imagery can detect the percentage of weeds compared to healthy crop, and count the number of plants per square metre. By analysing the images, the app can also detect disease and is capable of interpreting holes in leaves to highlight insect damage. “This is the most advanced crop scouting tool we have produced and is the culmination of years of development work,” says Mr Wrangham. The new version of the software will automatically fly a drone to scout fields five times faster than conventional methods. Using AI and satellite data it can then analyse the images to offer data and advice to the user. “Skippy can now count plants, measure healthy crop cover compared to weed cover, report on damaged crops and highlight

4 | AgriNews | November 2020

insect damage,” explains Mr Wrangham. Satellite data is being fed to the app up to three times a week and appears on the user’s phone as a layer of information. “Users can import their own maps too, giving each a name so that year on year data can be compiled and compared,” says Mr Wrangham. “The AI in Skippy is able to take all of this information to offer analysis and advice based on the data collected from the drone images,” he adds. The data is subsequently presented in PDF reports that are automatically created by the app. “The reports are easy to understand and can be saved for future benchmarking and comparison. Our aim has always been to make this technology easy to use and accessible for all. Our monthly fee for Skippy is still just £30 for a single farmer and with drone prices below £400 we hope that more farmers will start to adopt this technology to save time crop scouting,” he concludes. Drone Ag will be holding free to attend, interactive field days to demonstrate the new version of Skippy Scout at five locations throughout the UK. NEW MINERAL RANGE FOR ALKALISED RUMINANT DIETS

FiveF Alka Limited has launched a range of bespoke mineral supplements formulated specifically to complement rations

F

iveF Alka Limited has launched a range of bespoke mineral supplements formulated specifically to complement alkalised ruminant rations including Alkagrain or Alkalage. All the new in-feed Alkaboost minerals contain additional sulphur to help ruminant livestock utilise the excess non protein nitrogen (NPN) produced in the rumen by alkalised diets. The sulphur allows animals to build usable protein from the available nitrogen. The range includes bespoke formulations for various dairy and beef rations, a mineral specifically for growing lambs and a specialist Alkaboost product that combines the inorganic supplementary elements with a high purity yeast culture and microencapsulated plants and spices. 6 | AgriNews | November 2020

“Alkaboost Lamb also includes increased levels of selenium, vitamin E and additional iron to support immune function, muscle development and rapid growth. This is recommended for lambs being finished on a high

cereal content alkalised ration. Feeding rate is 15-20g per head per day,” explains Rob Smith from FiveF Alka. “Specialist new Alkaboost plus Rummisentials has been shown to be particularly complementary for

alkalised diets. The addition of a yeast culture and non-medicated plant spices helps to improve rumen pH regulation and increase propionic acid production, which together boost intake and available energy. The plant spices also help to increase protein availability from the ration.” The dairy and beef minerals should be fed at the rate of 100-150g per day. Any farmer making alkalised rations is advised to talk to their usual merchant about appropriate supplementation using the Alkaboost minerals. Alternatively call 01200 613118 for further information.

SPRAYER PIONEER FITS NEW INTELLIGENT TYRES

New pressure and heat sensing tyres have been fitted to a sprayer for the first time in the UK.

N

ew pressure and heat sensing tyres have been fitted to a sprayer for the first time in the UK. The Continental VF tyres have been fitted to a SAM Horizon 4000 selfpropelled sprayer. “This is the first time the new VF tyres with pressure sensors have been fitted to a sprayer in the UK and we hope that other sprayer operators will want to introduce this technology to help reduce soil compaction,” says Continental agricultural tyre specialist Richard Hutchins. ContiPressureCheck™ is a new system that monitors the pressure and temperature of tyres to provide the operator with the information to prevent tyre related issues such as underinflation or 8 | AgriNews | November 2020

overloading. “VF tyres with sensors are the future for farming. On the road these tyres enable the vehicle to carry forty percent more load than a standard tyre at the same pressure. Alternatively, in the field, the pressure of VF tyres can be lowered by forty percent compared to standard tyres, even when carrying the same load. This spreads the weight of the vehicle over a larger surface area and reduces soil compaction,” explains Mr Hutchins. The sprayer is owned by James Goodley, who runs an arable farm in Norfolk. The tyres are helping him to adapt his farming methods as part of a move to a zero till system. “I want my sprayer tyre pressures as low as possible to maximise

the footprint and minimise compaction. My concern has always been to not run them too low, and that is where the tyre monitor comes in, because it can tell the operator if the pressure is safe and correct,” says Mr Goodley. The Continental VF TractorMaster 600/60R30 162D/159E tyres are part of a larger range that is now available in the UK. “Demands to reduce the impact of heavy machinery on our soil are being met with new technology. Our hope is that others will choose to invest, in the way that Mr Goodley has, to help improve farming methods in the future,” concludes Mr Hutchins.

KIOTI: TRACTOR MODELS PREPARED FOR THE FUTURE With the introduction of the environmental stage V engine standards for all tractors above 25HP, Kioti range is ready to lead the way

W

ith The introduction of the environmental Stage V engine standards for all tractors above 25HP the Kioti range of tractors is ready to move forward and lead the way. The change will see the introduction of a number of new exciting models. Kioti have many years of experience using the required technology. The first Compact tractor models using Common rail engines above 50HP with DPF were introduced in 2012. Kioti Engines have been running to quiet, economical and environmental friendly standards since this time. For Kioti the new enhanced

regulations are just a small step not the radical change required for other competitive makes. As a brief outline a new model CK2630, using the reliable Kioti 3A165 engine will be introduced offering a tractor with a physical presence relative to its size, i.e. the same as the existing CK3510 / 4010 but running at 25 Horse power to keep the purchase price lower. Making a useful addition to the models offered from Kioti The New CK30 series tractors will range from 35 to 50 horse power. In this tractor range ROPS and factory cabin versions will be available as well as mechanical and HST transmissions.

The larger DK tractor model range will also grow. Currently HST transmission is available only on the 60HP ROPS and Cabin models. THE BOOTS WHO WERE MADE FOR WORKING NOTCH UP 600 YEARS SERVICE As JCB prepares to mark its 75th birthday, there’s one family with an extra reason to toast the milestone

S JCB prepares to mark its 75th birthday tomorrow there’s one family with an extra reason to toast the milestone after notching up a staggering 600 years’ service to the company.

their second cousin Leigh Boot. Shaun, of Denstone, who has worked for JCB for 20 years, said: “There is definitely something in the blood of the Boot family that makes us want to work at JCB.

The Boot family started its long association with JCB in 1949 when Bill Boot clocked on for the first time at the company’s factory in Rocester, Staffordshire. In the years that followed, nine of ten of Bill and his wife Lucy’s children went on to work at JCB. In total 27 Boot family members – including nine grandsons and three greatgrandsons have followed in Bill’s footsteps – registering a staggering 600 years’ combined service to JCB.

Bill’s grandson Gary Boot, of Uttoxeter, 58, of who retired in September, said his family were very proud of their JCB links. Gary, who started working for JCB in 1986, said: “I always wanted to join from an early age. My dad, Dereck, would come home and tell us stories of the company and Mr JCB and that sparked my interest. I’ve made so many great friends and have so many memories of the place. It is amazing to think of how many years’ service our family has put in – 600, it’s astonishing.”

“Knowing that dad, grandad and great grandad all worked here really does make me sit back and think. I’m really not sure what our family would have done for a living if it wasn’t for JCB. I have a six-yearold daughter and my brother Daniel has a six-year-old son. So, you never know, I wouldn’t be surprised if they decide to follow in the family tradition.”

The milestone has just been reached as JCB prepares to mark its 75th anniversary on October 23rd – the day in 1945 that the late Joseph Cyril Bamford founded his business in a lock-up garage in the Staffordshire market town of Uttoxeter. Today the late Bill Boot’s legacy continues as 11 members of his family still work at JCB – including five of his grandsons and three of his greatgrandsons. Bill’s son Bob, aged 81 and living in Cheadle, Staffordshire, started work in at JCB in 1956 on a temporary contract – and stayed for nearly 44 years. He said: “It is a company that has

Gary’s identical twin brothers Andy and Steven both work at the World HQ in Rocester. Andy, 53, said: “I think how it is panned out over the generations has been brilliant. I joined in 1983 on a Youth Training Scheme and haven’t looked back from there.” Steven, of Rocester, added: “Being identical twins makes it difficult for our colleagues, but to be honest, there are so many Boots I find it difficult to keep up myself on some occasions!” The fourth generation of Boots working at JCB is made up of great-grandsons, brothers Shaun and Daniel Boot and

Bill Boot and his wife Lucy – who worked in the JCB canteen – had nine sons and a daughter and nine of the children - Tony, Dereck (correct), Ken, Bob, Bill, Dennis, Les, Ron and Ruby – went on to work at JCB followed by grandchildren and great-grandchildren. JCB was founded on the same day as JCB’s Chairman Anthony Bamford, now Lord Bamford, was born. The company’s first product was a hydraulic tipping trailer made out of war time scrap. Today the company manufactures more than 300 different machines, including the world’s first electric mini excavator. JCB has 22 factories around the world, 11 in the UK and others in India, the USA, Brazil and China.

uilding on a wealth of existing investment in UK wheat R&D, including the UK Research and Innovation BBSRCfunded Designing Future Wheat programme (DFW), the newly formed IWYP – European Winter Wheat Hub will accelerate research discoveries from the UK and globally into commercial plant breeding. A public-private partnership, the IWYP - European Winter Wheat Hub will combine novel traits discovered by collaborative international teams into a range of high performing European winter wheat genetic backgrounds for assessment and use in winter wheat breeding programmes. BASF, KWS, RAGT and Syngenta have entered a collaboration with NIAB to provide a translational pipeline supporting European winter wheat improvement. In partnership with IWYP, the commercial breeders will select key genetic discoveries of potential value for the European wheat community from global IWYP research projects. NIAB will then use

SUPPORTING YOUR FARMLAND BIRDS THIS WINTER Important updates and advice regarding coronavirus (COVID-19) Supporting your farmland birds this winter

I

mportant updates and advice regarding coronavirus (Covid-19)

With increasingly erratic weather patterns - this year being no exception - one thing that remains constant is the lack of food availability for farmland birds over the course of the winter and early spring months. Alarmingly, Europe has seen a substantial decline in farmland bird numbers in the last 40 years. This is of grave concern, as our birds are often considered good indicators of how healthy the natural environment is, particularly as they sit near the top of the food chain. The dramatic fall in UK farmland bird populations is clear to see in the chart data taken from the November 2019 Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) publication, "Wild bird populations in the UK 1970 to 2018". From the numbers, we can see that our farmland bird species declined by 56% between 1970 and 2018. Studying the report in detail shows that the four worst affected species – grey partridge, corn burning, tree sparrow and turtle dove – have declined by over 80%. The once common and iconic yellowhammer has sadly declined by 54%. Why are we losing so many of our farmland birds? The decline can be attributed

16 | AgriNews | November 2020

to many factors, including the loss of mixed farming, more intensive farming practices, larger fields, increased predation and changes to the crops that are being grown. These problems have been recognised by the Government, with options now available in more recent agri-environment schemes to help improve farmland biodiversity and therefore support our bird populations. Grants exist within Entry Level Stewardship, Higher Level Stewardship and Countryside Stewardship for farmers who can help struggling farmland birds through the 'hungry gap' by spreading small seed mixtures. What is the 'hungry gap'? This term refers to the period from December to April when existing sown wild bird seed crops, game cover, hedgerows and trees have less plentiful seed and food. While this can have an immediate effect on bird populations due to starvation, it critically means that many surviving birds go into the spring breeding season in poor condition. As a result, populations inevitably shrink as less chicks fledge. How can you help? When out on farm, we are often shown some really excellent wild bird seed mix plots which provide a mass of food for our seed-eating birds, but no matter how much care and attention is given to these plots,

birds will invariably run out of seed by January. This is where supplementary winter feeding comes in. There are many ways of feeding birds with small seeds, from spreading by hand to using a spinner on the back of a vehicle. By adhering to good practice, you can ensure farmland birds really benefit: Feed next to hedgerows if you can, as this reduces the risk of predation Vary the amount of seed put down to match the uptake. Start with 'little and often' until you know how much is being taken Use hard tracks where possible, as this makes it easy for the birds to find the seed. Move feeding sites around when required to avoid the build up of vermin, and avoid feeding near to farm buildings and water courses Some hopper feeding is allowed under agri-environment scheme rules but the majority should be spread on the ground. If you are thinking of applying for a Mid Tier Countryside Stewardship agreement or a Wildlife Offer, you can apply for one tonne of supplementary winter feeding (option code AB12) for every two hectares of wild bird seed mix (option code AB9) you apply for. The grant rate at the time of writing is £632 per tonne.

ALLTECH: LAUNCHES NEW PECKING BLOCK

Animal nutrition company Alltech has launched a new pecking block called Natu-pek

A

nimal nutrition company Alltech has launched a new pecking block called Natu-Pek, which it said encouraged natural behaviour and provided natural nutrition in all poultry species during each stage of production. Natu-Pek is designed to encourage natural pecking, natural foraging and natural beak conditioning in commercial flocks, reducing stress and stressassociated health issues through enrichment.. Designed to cater for up to 2,000 laying hens per block for 5–8 weeks, the peck block also emits a sweet smell that attracts birds to the enrichment the block 18 | AgriNews | November 2020

provides and encourages repeat visits. The blocks can be suspended from the ceiling or raised off of the ground in a dry scratch area. With increasing pressure to ban the practice of beak tipping, Natu-Pek features an abrasive finish to help naturally reduce excessive beak growth, offering a proactive approach to managing abnormal pecking behaviours. “Promoting natural behaviours can help promote feather cover and health while diminishing aggression and injurious pecking, thus improving productivity and reducing medication use,

interventions and mortality,” said Adam Platt, regional poultry sales manager with Alltech UK, who has been working closely with producers to trial NatuPek and develop the new welfare-enhancing peck block. Charles Mear, of Wood Farm Free-Range Eggs, has been trialling the Natu-Pek blocks on his family’s two 14,000bird units in Bedfordshire since September and has seen positive results. “The sweet-smelling blocks are big and sturdy enough to occupy several birds each side at one time, are lasting well and are easy to hang,” Mear said.

OPERATIONS CENTRE BECOMES SMARTER AND MORE COMPATIBLE

With the John Deere Operations Centre, farmers and contractors can manage their farm data at any time.

W

ith the John Deere Operations Centre, farmers and contractors can manage their farm data anywhere at any time. The app is user-friendly and customers can be linked to their machines, fields and operators on their smartphone or farm computer. John Deere is constantly developing the Operations Centre, in particular to simplify its use and to enable troublefree data entry from mixed fleet equipment. The latest updates are designed to make the system even smarter and more compatible. Thanks to a new function, with just a few clicks all processes can be adjusted in the Operations Centre even after fieldwork is finished. This allows farmers to manage operations just as flexibly as with a field book, which is usually kept in the tractor. If the tractor driver has accidentally documented the wrong crop variety during drilling, for example, this can easily be corrected later on. Further adjustments are also possible for worked area, plant protection products, tank mixtures, harvest year and crop calibration on the combine, among others. WATER RESOURCES: WHY THEY ARE FUNDAMENTAL FOR THE FUTURE Water resources: Why they are fundamental for the future of agriculture

R

isorse idriche agricoltura Phenomena such as waves of drought and rising temperatures will become increasingly frequent in the coming years due to climate change. In different areas of the world they are already a current reality and make it increasingly challenging to engage in agricultural activities at the levels of the past. Moreover, phenomena such as population growth, urbanisation and pollution do not make the situation any easier.

In this panorama, water resources become a particularly precious commodity, to be exploited carefully and more and more efficiently in order to satisfy all the uses that are made of them. Water is in fact necessary for alimentary uses, but also for industry, tourism and agriculture. Agriculture in Europe is the sector that uses the most water resources, accounting for about 40% of the resources used each year (as detailed in this article on the use of European water resources). With the everincreasing demand for water, it is necessary to find solutions to meet the needs of people, the economy and nature. In some regions, especially during the summer months, there is not enough water to meet the demand of everyone. This is why organisations such as the European Union encourage a range of actions for the careful

and sustainable use of water resources. Let us look at this in greater detail. How agriculture affects the use of water resources The European Environment Agency estimates that approximately one third of Europe’s territory is exposed to water stress conditions, which can become particularly severe during the summer. The greatest risk concerns the Mediterranean countries, but the problem of water scarcity is beginning to affect some regions of Great Britain and Germany. Despite significant improvements in the efficiency of water use in recent years, agriculture continues to be primarily responsible for water use. In spring, the incidence rate of this sector can reach up to 60% of European water consumption, due to the large amount of water needed to support fruit and vegetable production. For this reason, it is expected that the cost of irrigation could increase in the coming years, especially if the forecast of reduced rainfall due to climate change should become a reality. Not to be underestimated is the fact that during the summer months another key sector such as tourism competes with agriculture for water demand. November 2020 | AgriNews | 25

SPRAYER TESTING CHANGES COME INTO FORCE FROM NOVEMBER 2020 As part of the Sustainable Use Directive (SUD), pesticide application equipment testing became a legal requirement in 2016..

A

s part of the Sustainable Use Directive (SUD), pesticide application equipment (PAE) testing became a legal requirement in 2016. Any machine applying a professional pesticide must be tested by the specified dates and at regular intervals thereafter. To explain this in a bit more detail, the change affects sprayers that are more than 5 years old and have a boom width over 3 metres, air blast sprayers, aircraft, and train sprayers. Currently a test is required every 5 years, but from 26th November it changes to every 3 years. So, for any sprayer of this type tested before November 2017, a re-test is due by that date.

28 | AgriNews | November 2020

It is also important to note that sprayers tested any time after 26th November 2017, the test is only valid for 3 years, so if your sprayer was tested for example in June 2018, the next test is due in June 2021. For all other types of PAE, which includes boom sprayers 3 metres and under, weed wipers, slug pellet and granular applicators and a range of other machines, the requirements remain unchanged at 6 yearly cycles for retest. Crop assurance scheme requirements haven’t changed so sprayers are still required to be tested annually. Regular testing is important in helping to ensure safe and accurate application

of pesticides, protecting the environment and waterways, but also helping to safeguard the availability of products for the future. A regularly tested machine will reduce the risk of breakdowns, when timing of applications can be crucial for efficient control of weeds, pests and diseases. The need for an integrated pest management (IPM) plan to be carried out helps ensure that when the decision has been made to use a pesticide, that the equipment is calibrated and has been tested to a standard that will apply the product in a safe and sustainable way.
