Moreover, this tactic could be tempting this year, he says, because fields have been cleared by the early cereal harvest. But where soil moisture deficit is significant following the parched July, this could be disastrous for WOSR establishment, he “Moisturewarns. is fundamental to crop germination,” says Mr Adamson, “and particularly so with oilseed rape seeds which need to take up 40% of their own weight in moisture before germination can even begin. There is then a second moisture requirement to allow the seed to produce an embryonic root.

“Maximising this growth rate is critical whether growing conventional or hybrid varieties. But the vigour of hybrid varieties can potentially be used as an extra method to maximise growth when time is of the essence.”

“From a

However where drilling is delayed into the second half of August to achieve sufficient soil moisture, he says this will increase the need for good seedling vigour, and in these situations hybrid varieties can prove their worth.

The improved growth rate of hybrids means they can still reach a size where they stand a chance against cabbage stem flea beetles when the migration begins.

As well as income from the WOSR crop itself, he says the crop’s benefits for maximising first wheats in the rotation can also not be ignored, but rushing to drill WOSR before there is adequate moisture could easily result in disappointment.

Perennial plants like grasses, clovers and herbs need a chance to recover after grazing to regrow their leaves and replenish energy reserves before the next grazing event, this ensures high productivity and plant resilience. As day length shortens and soil temperature reduces during autumn and winter, this rest period increases to be 120 days. This means a field grazed on 1st November should not be grazed again until 1st “AchievingMarch.this rest period requires a plan and the ability to accurately allocate the feed on farm pasture to livestock to ensure they are fed to demand in what they need and not appetite – what they want,” explains Mr Daniel. Following successful UK farm trials of Nofence virtual fencing technology, Mr Daniel sees it as a useful tool for livestock producers to overcome these challenges.

With grass growth slowing down and the end of the grazing season approaching, virtual fencing technology offers livestock producers a unique tool to start management for 2023 forage production, says farm consultant James Daniel, Managing Director for Precision Grazing Ltd.

MANAGING END OF SEASON GRAZING TO SUPPORT NEXT SPRING’S PRODUCTION

Using a combination of GPS, mobile data network, audio signals and solar power to work with animal behaviour and create a ‘virtual pasture,’ livestock wearing Nofence collars can be allocated to an area to graze with no physical fencing, explains Synne Foss Budal, General Manager for Nofence UK. “Within the Nofence app, farmers can quickly map out, create and move virtual fencing,” says Miss Budal. “Not only does this allow for long-term strategic grazing planning that can be modified easily if weather conditions change, but it cuts down on labour associated with moving fences during an already busy time of year.” Putting together an autumn grazing plan To ensure pastures and silage fields used for grazing hit that 120-day rest period sweet spot, Mr Daniel says to assess early spring forage needs for different stock groups and to then work “Forbackwards.spring calvers and lambers, pasture in the spring is worth three to four times the value of pasture in the winter as it is high quality and able alone to support all of the animals' nutritional needs in late pregnancy and during lactation. Therefore farmers want to start spring with a cover of pasture across the farm which provides leaves to capture sunlight and grow more pasture, as well as a ‘buffer’ of feed to allow for any delay in spring growth,” he says. “Managing a true rest period will help achieve Whilethat.” the exact rest/grazing strategy will vary from farm to farm, there are a few hard and fast rules Mr Daniel says apply to everyone. “On the final grazing of a field, aim to graze down to the height of a golf ball for sheep, and a tennis ball for cattle. This will encourage high quality pasture next spring,” he says. Mr Daniel recommends, especially for sheep farmers, to combine flocks where possible, this simplifies grazing planning with fewer groups to think about, and means that fields can be grazed in less time. If a field cannot be grazed within seven days it should be divided in half. This will reduce soil damage and prevent any regrowth from being re-grazed for more pasture in the spring.

A winter-finishing cattle enterprise that doesn’t buy in meal or fertiliser could easily seem unrealistic to many farmers

“The continental cattle need the extra push so we feed them combi-crops”.

Awinter-finishing cattle enterprise that doesn’t buy in meal or fertiliser could easily seem unrealistic to many farmers in Ireland, however John Purcell is man who has bucked the trend and is doing exactly this. John is a beef farmer based in Thomastown, near Golden in Co. Tipperary. Recently, he hosted a farm walk on behalf of the Limerick and Tipperary Organic Farming Group, to show those interested how he runs this system. Agriland was at the event, which was well attended by both conventional and organic dairy, beef and tillage farmers. The farm The home farm consists of about 500ac. In addition to this, there are five “satellite farms”, each approximately 100ac in size, bringing the total farmed area to approximately 1,000 ac. The land is both owned and rented, “but mainly rented” John explained. The farm buys in 12-18-month-old steers and heifers. These are sourced from both organic cattle marts and directly from “Aboutfarms. 40% of the cattle we buy in come from marts and 60% come directly from farmers,” said John. The farm finishes over 1,000 cattle every year with approximately 70% of these cattle finished from February to CommentingJune. on the winter finishing system, John said: “Winter finishing is paying well in organics, particularly if you run a closed-gate Allsystem.”thefeed that is used on the farm is grown on-farm.

The combi crop is a mixture of peas, oats, clovers and grasses that again, are grownJohnGoingon-farm.organicexplained that in 1998, the farm made the switch to organic. He admitted that his reason for switching to organic farming was businessbased, and that the environmental benefits were an afterthought. He said: “I could pretend I was a tree hugger from day one but I wasn’t, I switched to organic farming totally from a commercial point of view.” He explained that in the years after making the switch, he noticed the significant environmental benefit to the farm and has since added many wildlife corridors and features to the farm to further enhance its wildlife habitats.

“We are growing all our own feed. We finish Herefords and Angus off-red clover silage,” said John.

KVERNELAND MAPS OUT THE WAY FOR SPOT SPRAYING

The latest update to Kverneland’s iXTrack T series sprayers includes several new options from nozzle spacing and spot spraying to boom height Acontrol.major advance is that a new 36/25m steel boom can be specified which allows contractors to switch between the two working widths without having to unfold the whole boom. Lower boom height Other new features highlighted by the company include the choice of an extra spray line with 25cm nozzle spacing. With the nozzles being closer, the distance between the crop canopy and boom height is decreased, while ensuring an even coverage, thus reducing spray drift. Boom height Kverneland With nozzles at 25cm and 50cm, the boom becomes a crowded place Also available is the Boom Guide ProActive automatic boom height control system which corrects the boom height via ultrasonic sensors which control the sprayer Thehydraulics.company notes that it is able to provide boom guidance in any field conditions, even at higher speeds.

To many, spot spraying involves the identification of individual weeds and their elimination one at a time using some form of sensor or camera to recognise them. However, the company points out that this means the farmer has to estimate just how much chemical will be required for a particular area, running the risk of there being too little, necessitating a return to base for a refill, or there being too much, and so chemical is not used and the surplus has to be disposed of somehow. Mapping the problem

With the use of prescription maps, Kverneland claims that the guesswork is taken out of deciding upon spray volumes before the tank is mixed. The company believes that prescription maps have huge potential in the management of farms and it is looking to integrate sprayer operations into the overall picture. This ambition certainly forms a logical extension to precision farming, and the adoption of such an holistic approach, via digital technology, may well come to be seen as a huge advance in agriculture.

MicroZyme slurry improvers have been launched in the UK by slurry speMicroZymebeenimproversslurryhavelaunchedin the UK by slurry specialist Tramspread. The biological slurry additive reduces solids and ammonia emissions whilst improving nitrogen retention. Managing director, Terry Baker says: “MicroZyme products will reduce emissions and improve the value of slurry to the crop and soil. The unique bacteria in MicroZyme R (ruminant) and MicroZyme S (swine) break down fibre, starch, pectins, fats and protein residues to decrease solids and lower harmful emissions.” The government’s Clean Air Strategy has demanded that emissions from slurry be cut by maintaining slurry stores and applying slurry more accurately. It is expected that splash plates will be banned in 2025 and that all slurry should be covered by “These2027. products will help farmers to meet these targets and will also make applying slurry more efficient. Slurry treated with MicroZyme requires less agitation and will require less fuel to pump out. It will also make the slurry more homogenous which will improve application accuracy, especially with trailing shoe or dribble bar applicators,” adds Mr Baker. Degradative enzymes in MicroZyme begin to act on the slurry immediately to decrease solids and reduce crust formation. This will also reduce the build-up of sediment that can lead to some storage, such as lagoons, reducing in capacity and becoming

Theunsustainable.N,PandK value of the slurry and the uptake potential for the crop will also be improved following treatment. “This will make the slurry more suited to multi-cut silage systems and will reduce the need for bought-in fertiliser because the slurry will have more value to the crop and can be absorbed by the crop and the soil more effectively,” he Trialssays. have shown that slurry treated with MicroZyme has lower levels of coliforms and E. coli. The Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) are also lower. This improves nitrogen retention and reduces sulphide and ammonia levels.

“These products are an important development to helping manage slurry both in storage and during application. For farmers looking to improve the value of their slurry and reduce emissions it represents a cost-effective solution that is easy to manage and will bring immediate benefits,” he concludes.

The urgency for the collaboration to come together is clear, and stems from the fact that the epidemiology of AI viruses in wild birds and at the wilddomestic bird interface is changing. Experts say that understanding the drivers behind those changes is essential to enhance the sensitivity and timeliness of risk-based surveillance programmes, and in order to design more effective disease-control interventions.

A new collaboration hopes to find solutions to the ongoing bird flu crisis. Michael Barker hears from some of the participants Anew collaboration hopes to find solutions to the ongoing bird flu crisis. Michael Barker hears from some of the participants on what the group hopes to Theachievenews that a collaboration of leading scientists is coming together to combat the avian influenza (AI) crisis in the UK was a welcome announcement in late June. Comprising eight leading institutions, the research consortium has received £1.5 million from the Biotechnology & Biosciences Research Council (BBSRC) and Defra to develop strategies to avoid a repeat of this year’s severe outbreak. So what are its specific roles and objectives, and why is now the right time for such a united approach?

“The 2020/21 and 2021/22 winter seasons have seen the most significant incursions of high pathogenicity avian influenza to date, with the incursion during winter 20/21 being the largest on record in the UK until it was dwarfed by the emergence of H5N1 during 21/22,” Dr Guillaume Fournié, senior research fellow at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) and a member of the consortium, tells Poultry Business. “These incursions are linked to both host and viral factors, areas where critical knowledge gaps exist. This consortium aims to address these gaps by developing new to tools to understand the drivers of avian influenza emergence in the UK.” The role of the RVC in the one-year project is to improve understanding of the virus transmission dynamics at the population scale, between wild bird populations, at the wilddomestic interface, and among domestic birds.

“Reliableoutbreak. detection of avian influenza in wild birds before outbreaks on poultry farms could offer opportunities to alert farmers to the need to enhance biosecurity practices, such as temporary housing of free-range birds, in order to reduce their chances of suffering an outbreak,” Ward explains.

New of a collaboration of leading scientists is coming together to combat the avian flu crisis in the UK spreading to people and other animals.” Four universities have also joined the fight. Dr Alastair Ward, associate professor of biodiversity and ecosystem management in the School of Biology at the University of Leeds, will investigate the role of wild birds in perpetuating the disease among poultry. Specifically, he will examine whether the virus can be consistently detected in birds routinely shot by hunters at key locations throughout England, before outbreaks start on poultry farms. If successful, this would mean that early detection of seasonal re-emergence of the disease in wild birds can be used to trigger advice to poultry farmers to enhance biosecurity practices so that they reduce the risk of an

“Since hunters lawfully shoot several thousand ducks and geese in the UK each year, these could offer an excellent resource for testing for the disease. This is what we are seeking to evaluate during our study.” The collaboration might be an effort between researchers, but that doesn’t mean farmers themselves don’t have a huge role to play too. “The most important actions [farmers can take] would be to ensure the highest biosecurity standards on premises to reduce the risk of viral incursion onto the farm,” says Fournié. “Also, a close monitoring of flock health so that if poultry become infected, the infection can be detected as early as possible and the risk of it spreading to other farms is Researchersminimised.”and industry are coming together as one to tackle the crisis, and if successful, fears that millions of pounds will be lost to AI every year could yet prove to be unfounded. The largest, the UKRI GCRF One Health Poultry Hub, investigates the impact of poultry production intensification on the risk of zoonotic disease emergence. Nine months ago when the first case of the current avian influenza (AI) outbreak was confirmed in the UK for the winter 2021/22 period, I don’t think anyone could have predicted that an Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) would still be in place across Great Britain in TheJuly.impact of this prolonged outbreak has been felt right across the industry, something clearly reflected in the responses from poultry businesses into Defra and APHA’s ‘lessons learnt’ exercise. Some of the key themes so far include the need to review free-range marketing regulations, improve the poultry register, and address the impact that cases of AI in backyard flocks can have on commercial premises. We’ll continue to work with Defra and the APHA to help highlight the priority areas for future Withoutbreaks.harvest now in full swing, attention turns to cereal yields and the potential impact on the cost of feed. As inflation continues to bite, the cost of virtually all inputs to poultry production are likely to keep rising and the NFU continues to focus on fairness in the supply chain in our engagement with retailers as well as the government and other stakeholders. On a positive note, confirmation from the government that the 2,000 visas for seasonal poultry workers are guaranteed each year until 2024 is very welcome news. The government is also tendering for two labour providers with poultry experience to administer the scheme, which we hope will make it easier for seasonal poultry producers to access the workers they desperately need. Continuing with the positive news, we’ve just finished recruitment for the 202223 NFU Poultry Industry Programme. We received more than 40 applications and the calibre of candidates was extremely high. It’s great to see so many young people who are passionate about the poultry sector and eager to help shape its future. As I write this, the UK is experiencing record-breaking temperatures and widespread travel disruption due to the extreme heat. I hope everyone was able to manage their birds effectively and collectively considerations are reviewed on how we adapt to cope with extreme weather events in the future.

Dacia Duster Commercial is the latest model to feature the brand’s new visual Basedidentityon the rugged Duster SUV, the specially converted Duster Commercial offers up to 1,623 litres of useful volume and up to 503kg of payload capacity

Three-year, 60,000-mile warranty with three-year roadside cover as Ordersstandardopen now, with prices starting from £13,995 excluding TheVAT Dacia Duster Commercial has been enhanced with the brand’s bold new visual identity, adding to the model’s proven appeal to hard-working businesses that require a quality, robust vehicle that offers outstanding value. Beyond a simple shift in design, the new identity builds on the strongly held values that are behind the Dacia success story. By applying this identity to the Dacia Duster Commercial, Dacia is extending its commitment to business customers, as well as retail car buyers, bringing even more versatility and capability to an already practical package.

AND SPACIOUS CARGO AREA

The conversion takes place right at the factory, with experienced Dacia technicians replacing the rear seats of the Duster with a completely flat wooden load floor covered with a hard-wearing surface. A sturdy mesh bulkhead safely separates the load area from the front passenger compartment, while a series of lashing eyes make it easy to secure loose cargo.

The emblem also features on the centre of each wheel. Another visible change is the addition of the logo on the rear panel and steering wheel. The minimal design sees the lettering pared back so only the essentials remain, enough being left to clearly distinguish each letter.

The new visual identity adds to the many attributes already offered by the Duster Commercial. Based on the Duster SUV, it is homologated as an N1 commercial version, building on the Duster’s rugged and resilient nature by adding a tough, hardwearing flat load area, offering 1,623 litres of space and up to 503kg payload capacity.

A full-length removable load cover keeps the cargo bay’s contents shielded from prying eyes, aided by the opaque film applied to the fixed rear windows. Finally, rubber mats and a builtin alarm system round out the protection measures. With up to 1,623 litres of cargo space on offer, the Duster Commercial is a natural fit for hard-working trades. The absence of a load sill makes accessing the space easy and, with a bay length of 1,792mm, even the longest loads can be accommodated with ease. A generous load width of 1,247mm and a floor-to-ceiling height on the 4x2 models of 917mm means bulky items can be easily transported too. Meanwhile, a maximum payload of up to 503kg (depending on model) ensures
