NETTEX: THREE BENEFITS OF BOLUSING LIVESTOCK

Yeast fermentation additive reduces lamb finishing times, resulting in an additional £18.91 per head profit

Micronutrients are essential to the short and longterm function of cattle and sheep. Deliver both trace elements and vitamins to livestock with EnduraBol boluses

While only a small amount is required for adequate supplementation, trace elements and vitamins pack a powerful punch in many areas of performance for cattle and sheep. This includes fertility, daily liveweight gain and nervous system function, says Emily Hall, product manager for Nettex, GB supplier of EnduraBol boluses.

“From breeding stock to stores, trace elements and vitamins work together to mitigate the adverse effects of deficiencies and to support body function and immune response,” says Ms Hall.

Due to the small amount required and the way ruminants digest and absorb micronutrients, an effective way of delivery is directly into the rumen for sustained and efficient nutrient absorption.

“In recent years, a number of factors including more frequent extreme weather events and intensifying grazing practices have increased the risk of mineral related disorders and diseases in cattle and sheep,” explains Ms Hall.

Below, she highlights the benefits of micronutrient delivery through bolusing.

#1 Delivery of essential trace elements

There are six essential trace elements most commonly deficient or sub-optimal in ruminant diets: selenium, cobalt, zinc, manganese, iodine and copper. The extensive range of EnduraBol boluses consists of five product options for cattle and two options for sheep; all of which provide the full package of these six essential trace elements, with the option of a non copper version for sheep.

“Fundamentally, ruminants require the same trace elements to support short and long-term function,” explains Ms Hall. “The EnduraBol range allows producers to take a tailored approach to best support stock throughout different points in their lifecycle in different production systems.”

Selenium

Selenium acts as a natural antioxidant, protecting cells against oxidative stress and the breakdown of cell membranes. Readily transmissible through the placenta and required for brown fat utilisation in newborns, selenium is especially important in the pre-lambing and precalving periods.

Other areas of support include immunity, muscle development, placenta detachment post-birth and calf vigour.

Cobalt

The rumen microbes require cobalt for the production of vitamin B12. This vitamin is essential for energy metabolism, rumen function, feed efficiency

and growth. Plants are very poor sources of vitamin B12, making production by the rumen microbes the major source of this vitamin for cattle and sheep. Other areas of support include milk production, fertility and red blood cell formation.

Zinc

Supportive of the enzyme system responsible for hair and hoof development and repair, zinc is essential to coat condition and hoof health. It also improves energy metabolism, aids vitamin absorption and supports fertility.

Manganese

An essential trace element to support bone structure, manganese deficiency is associated with bone malformation and disease in newborn animals and youngstock. Livestock most at risk are pregnant cattle fed almost solely on a silage over the winter.

Manganese is also essential for multiple enzyme systems, therefore supports fertility, growth rates and the development of reproductive tissues.

Iodine

Especially important in the precalving and pre-lambing periods, iodine aids in foetal growth and development. EnduraBol PreCalver and EnduraBol High Iodine have increased rates of iodine inclusion to support cattle during periods of increased requirements.

WISE AGRICULTURE APPOINTED AS THE GB AGENT FOR ADVANTAGE FEEDERS

Wise Agriculture has been appointed GB distributor for Advantage Feeders livestock feeding systems

Wise Agriculture has been appointed GB distributor for Advantage Feeders livestock feeding systems.

Headquartered in Victoria, Australia, and formerly known as 3IN1Feeders, Advantage Feeders offers an extensive range of grain and pellet feeders designed to optimise productivity in beef, dairy and sheep.

“Advantage Feeders promotes ‘little and often’ controlled feeding by utilising stock’s saliva production to manage feed intakes. This improves rumen function and digestibility, which increases feed conversion rates to achieve higher output on lower feed input,” explains Gerard Roney, managing director of Advantage Feeders.

According to Mr Roney, the partnership with Wise Agriculture will support the company’s mission of providing new innovative feeding solutions to British farmers and allow it to continue to provide a high level of customer service to existing and future customers.

Based near Richmond, North

Yorkshire and established in 2018 by livestock farmers Edward and Laura Wise, Wise Agriculture specializes in premium livestock handling, data recording and animal welfare solutions for beef, dairy and sheep producers. The business is the UK distributor of Landquip’s Porta-Yards sheep handling portfolio and is the primary UK dealer of Arrowquip cattle handling equipment.

“We are excited to partner with Advantage Feeders and work alongside them to enhance customer experience and availability of advanced feeding solutions to livestock producers,” says Edward Wise, managing director of Wise Agriculture. “Their commitment to quality, service and product development aligns with our company ethos as we strive to provide tools to farmers to enhance their resource utilisation and profitability.”

Since launching in the UK in 2012, Advantage Feeders have been popular options for British producers looking to maximise performance with homegrown feeds and pasture conversion.

Trial work has found Advantage Feeders to

increase growth rates by 0.5kg/day in store cattle grazing fodder crops and supplemented with homegrown barley while simultaneously decreasing forage intakes by 3kg/day.

In a UK sheep trial, lambs that were creep fed with Advantage Feeders grew 9% faster than the control group, allowing the farm to achieve an 11% premium by having lambs sold three weeks earlier. Ewes fed with Advantage Feeders on the same farm were also able to have increased ewe stocking rates by 50%, for an overall profit increase of 208% compared to the control group.

“As livestock producers work to future-proof their businesses against unstable markets and challenging weather conditions, strategic investments to help them maximise homegrown feed utilisation and optimise livestock performance will be essential,” concludes Mr Wise. “We are looking forward to working with Advantage Feeders to not only deliver quality tools to help achieve this but the technical support and service for farmers to help them see a return on investment.”

NEW PROPILOT MOST OPERATORFRIENDLY YET SAYS SPEARHEAD

Making 2023 an exciting year for reach arm mowers, Spearhead has rolled out its most technologically advanced ProPilot Control system

Making 2023 an exciting year for reach arm mowers, Spearhead has rolled out its most technologically advanced ProPilot control system on new Twiga Pro and Flex models.

Feedback has prompted significant development at Spearhead with the “marketfirst” 10-inch touchscreen providing ultimate operator visibility, whilst functionality enhancements also ensure operators enjoy pin-point precision, less fatigue, and faster cutting speeds.

Auto-Level delivers accurate head angle

Exclusively developed by Spearhead engineers, AutoLevel maintains the cutting head angle automatically. It's the answer to a consistent and accurate finish.

No longer must the operator do this by eye. Instead, they can preset up to three fixed angles and let Auto-Level take care of it. A far less tiring process. And for complete flexibility, they can manually slide Auto-Level through degree changes too.

Auto-Level stays in play when you change the arm height. It’s a game-changing function for technology-driven contractors and large scale farmers.

Comments Antony Prince, Director of Sales and Marketing at Spearhead Machinery: “Precision is crucial for operators choosing high-performance equipment like the Twiga. Head angle is a big contributor to this. So, we’ve evolved our existing technology to provide the most effective functionality possible. We’re certainly at the forefront in automatic control.

Auto-Level is a groundbreaking enhancement. It makes precision hedge cutting easier. And it delivers superb results without draining the operator's concentration from hours of manual angling.”

Faster cutting with electronic Autopilot

Another significant improvement for the 2023 ProPilot system is the electronic Autopilot. Spearhead led innovation with the first automatic verge float system. And it's now replaced the mechanical process with an electronic pressure monitoring method.

This enables faster forward speeds. It also prolongs the life of the machine and reduces the weight of the arm by around 70kg.

“Our new Autopilot monitors the pressures to adjust cutting height every few milliseconds.

With less weight on the roller and less strain on the arm, the machine is better protected, whatever the reach. And the operator has less functionality to control manually. It makes their life much easier.

The big win from this improvement is faster forward speeds and higher productivity. When ground conditions allow, you can travel over 20km per hour. This is ideal for heavyweight contract work such as cutting verges on major highways,” said Antony.

Operators can switch Autopilot on with one click from the joystick or touch screen. Should they need to handle an obstacle, one click disengages it momentarily, before it seamlessly re-engages.

Offering further flexibility, Autopilot can run at three levels, depending on ground conditions.

Onboard diagnostics and tailored set-up

With a built-in control panel, fault finding is faster on the new ProPilot system. Operators suffer less downtime by accessing live diagnostics. This is a major improvement on the typical ‘laptop plug-in’ method of previous systems.

Kuhn Farm Machinery has announced its product line-up for Tillage Live at WH Corbett in Atherstone, Warwickshire

KUHN Farm Machinery has announced its product line-up for Tillage Live at WH Corbett in Atherstone, Warwickshire.

Working machines will include the Venta 3030 drill combined with the CD 3020 disc cultivator, the Espro 6000R drill, Striger 600R strip till machine, Prolander 6000 with TF 1512 distribution head, Optimer L12000 stubble cultivator, Performer 4000 Select cultivator and the VML Smart Plough.

The working machines will be joined by further products on the KUHN stand including the Megant 602R drill, Maxima RXE maize drill, Cultimer L300T stubble tine cultivator, and the Aero 32.1 pneumatic fertiliser spreader.

Product specialist Edd Fanshawe says:

“Tillage Live is a unique opportunity to see a wide range of KUHN products working, and our team will be on hand to answer questions and provide product information.”

The product selection represents KUHN’s breadth of machinery featuring both min-till and conventional tillage machinery choices.

Mr Fanshawe suggests that the popularity of shallow

cultivators reflects the desire to reduce soil disturbance. However, he says many systems still rely heavily on conventional ploughing methods.

“KUHN has expanded the mintill range in recent years, with wider widths for the Optimer and Prolander. However, we are also focussed on providing new solutions for those seeking to plough more efficiently. The VML Smart Plough is an example of how ploughing precision can be enhanced using GPS and ISOBUS to adjust working width, offset, working depth and levelling.”

The drills on show include the lightweight Megant 602R that can be operated by tractors with as little as 150 horsepower. The latest Maxima RXE has electric drive and offers precision maize sowing at 10km/h. The 6 metre Espro 6000R will be working at the event to demonstrate how the versatile drill can work after the plough, min-till or directly in residues.

“The KUHN drill range is one of the most comprehensive available, offering diversity for varying farming systems. We will also be

demonstrating the 6 metre Prolander with a TF 1512 distribution head, which is suitable for the shallow incorporation of stubble and mixing in a break crop whilst also seeding the following crop in the same pass,” he adds.

KUHN Megant 602R

KUHN’s lightweight Megant drill features new tine coulters, an updated terminal, and the option to add a second hopper. The Megant 602R shares functionality with the previous 600 model, but features half width shut off and can be specified with an additional SH 1120, 110- litre hopper to drill two crops in the same pass.

Due to its lightweight design, the Megant can be operated by tractors with as little as 150 horsepower. Three types of tines can be specified on the Megant, including reversible forward action, straight, and a new narrow 12mm straight tine coulter which reduces soil displacement through improved penetration and also reduces wear on the tine thanks to the addition of carbide plated points.

KVERNELAND GROUP UK: CHANGES AT TOP

The organisers of the annual British National Ploughing Championships & Country Festival are delighted that the event will return this year

With effect from 01 August 2023, Dan Crowe will take over as managing director of the Kverneland Group UK Ltd, from retiring md Joe Bell.

Dan Crowe’s career spans over 26 years with the company, and he takes over his new role with the Kverneland Group UK after 21 years as a product manager, latterly responsible for all feeding and forage equipment.

“I’m looking forward to taking the business forward, and building on what Joe has achieved in his time at the top,” said Dan. “After almost 40 years in the industry –and the last 20 as managing director of the Kverneland Group UK - Joe is taking a well-earned retirement.”

Joe Bell started his agricultural career with Ferrag in 1984 as financial controller.

It may be recalled that the business was sold to Kverneland in 1998 and eventually merged with Vicon to form Kverneland Group UK, based at its current location in St Helens, Merseyside.

In that time, Joe has guided the UK operation and its dealer network through many changes including the subsequent take-over in 2012 by Kubota Holdings.

Joe said: “It’s been a tremendous period of change and evolution, and I’m now looking forward to spending more time with my family and grandchildren.”

Coinciding with the change of managing director are a series of team changes that have arisen from internal promotion, to strengthen the product management team.

The first is David Perry, who is replacing Dan Crowe as the product manager responsible for feeding and forage equipment. David started his career at Kverneland in 2014 as a product demonstrator and has been an area sales manager for the last six years.

The second is Simon Wills,

who takes on the role of crop care product manager responsible for sprayers, fertiliser spreaders and control terminals. Simon has been with the Kverneland Group since 2012, having started as a product support engineer. His appointment enables existing product manager Graham Owen to focus on seeding equipment.

Dan said: “Our goal is to enhance the product management team, and to continue to build on the successes already achieved in supporting our dealers and our customers. And to be able to do this through internal promotion shows the strength of the team and the depth of product knowledge already in place.”

WHEN THE TIME IS RIGHT TO CHANGE A TRACTOR

Landini: When the time is right to change a tractor - choices for renewing your fleet

Tractors have a rather long working life, the duration of which depends on many factors, primarily the level of maintenance and the hours the machine has been in the field. We have talked about the great value of maintenance in several articles. It is essential to take good care of your vehicle, both for better quality and safety of work and so that you do not end up changing parts or having to buy a new model much sooner than expected. That’s why Landini has created Scheduled Maintenance Programmes, designed for the well-being of the machine, the farmer and the business, with a dedicated Landini team

and guaranteed service, for a tractor that always works at high performance.

DISCOVER THE LANDINI SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE PROGRAMME

Added to this is a statistic that is extremely variable depending on the history of the company using the tractor: the hours the tractor has actually worked in the field. As an example, a modern tractor has an average life of 15,000 hours, which is supposed to be completed in 10-15 years. This has changed a lot in the last 20 years, which is why today you can see very different machines

within the same fleet, modern tractors and vehicles that are 30 to 40 years old but still operate well.

This is because for a long time the agricultural sector has been characterised by a high ageing rate and only in recent years has it caught up with other sectors by innovating technology on machines and halving their weight. The target audience has also changed, seeing fewer and fewer small companies in favour of more structured agricultural businesses, with greater demands for state-of-the-art machinery fleets.

TRANSPORT AND MACHINERY SAFETYIMPORTANCE OF MAINTENANCE

Transport and machinery are the biggest contributor to the high fatality rate the agriculture endures

Transport and machinery are the biggest contributor to the high fatality rate that agriculture endures. Here are some simple ways you can reduce the risk and keep you, and others, safe.

One of the easiest ways of keeping yourself safe is by ensuring all the equipment you require is properly maintained and therefore suitable for the intended tasks. This can apply to any piece of equipment you run, for instance tractors, trailers, ATVs, towed appliances, farm vehicles, handheld machines etc.

Daily and regular checks

By completing daily checks before commencing use of the machine or vehicle, you are more likely to notice any possible defects that could prevent the task being carried out safely.

In addition to this, regular maintenance checks completed by a dealership are also recommended to ensure any defects that are not highlighted on daily checks are addressed. This can ensure that small issues are repaired before they escalate and have a bigger financial and safety impact.

Maintenance. Why you should care.

Ensuring your machines and transport are well maintained will also ensure it is running efficiently and therefore likely to reduce long term costs associated with the machine, while also having the potential to increase its longevity.

A well-maintained vehicle or machine is more likely to be complaint with what is considered roadworthy. As such, if an incident should occur (that is not your fault), you are likely to be in a more favourable position if your vehicle or machine is well maintained.

ENDOPHYTE BACTERIA SEED TREATMENT BRINGS N FIXING OPPORTUNITY

Endophyte bacteria seed treatment brings N fixing opportunity to crop establishment decisions

Endophyte bacteria seed treatment brings N fixing opportunity to crop establishment decisions

Decisions taken in readiness for planting this autumn’s wheat and barley crops should be about more than simply aiding crop emergence and establishment, says Syngenta field technical manager, Dr Jonathan Ronksley.

With growers focused on using fertiliser more efficiently, he says modern endophyte seed treatment technology also makes it possible for plants to obtain some of their spring nitrogen (N) needs fixed from the air.

“Clearly, factors such as cultivations, seed rate, drilling date and protecting against establishment diseases with a fungicide seed treatment remain crucial elements in establishment decisions,” says Dr Ronksley. “However, farmers are also looking to use N fertiliser more efficiently and farm more sustainably, and for the first time this autumn we have available the N-fixing endophyte seed treatment, Nuello® iN, for winter wheat and winter barley seed.

“Containing two strong N-fixing bacteria –Pseudomonas siliginis and Curtobacterium salicaceae – these enter the plant via the developing root, before

colonising plant shoots and fixing atmospheric N. They provide the plant with organic N and ammonium and are ‘always on’ for the duration of the season. This has the potential to supplement traditional fertiliser applications.”

Pointing to results from four UK replicated field studies examining N fertiliser dose response curves in winter wheat last season, Dr Ronksley says Nuello iN seed treatment was found to deliver a yield benefit equivalent to applying up to an extra 30 kg N/ha on average.

This was echoed in 14 ADAS split-field farm trials across the UK, he says, where winter wheat treated with Nuello iN which received a 30 kg/ ha reduction in its standard N dose maintained a similar yield to winter wheat receiving its full N dose. With yields averaging 10.80 and 10.83 t/ha respectively, Dr Ronksley says this equated to Nuello iN giving a 3:1 return on investment. On light or shallow land sites, he says use of Nuello iN with a 30 kg/ha N reduction gave an even bigger 5:1 return on investment.

“This makes sense as these types of soils are often associated with lower availability of soil residual N,” explains Dr Ronksley. “Indeed, across both small

plot replicated and split-field trials where a standard 100% N dose was applied, we also found bigger average yield gains from Nuello iN on light or shallow land sites or second cereal sites. We’ve also seen a yield benefit from Nuello iN in hybrid winter feed barley.

“Clearly, it’s always important to consult a FACTS qualified adviser for advice and guidance on N applications. However, there are several scenarios where we see a role for considering Nuello iN as part of an integrated fertiliser strategy. These include winter feed wheat and winter feed barley where a decision has been made to reduce inseason synthetic N inputs, and in winter wheat and winter barley where no reduction in synthetic N will take place but growers are looking to enhance yields.

“In the latter scenario, Nuello iN may be particularly relevant on sites where access to soil N is often limited – for example light, shallow, or nutrient-deficient soils; or in a second cereal position; or due to other factors such as late N application, soil N lockup, or dry conditions. Farming is all about risk mitigation and this can help growers with that. Currently it is not recommended to reduce N on milling wheat or malting barley.

FEEDING THE UK SUSTAINABLY: TIME FOR POLICY INACTION TO END

The British Society of Plant Breeders has urged the UK Government to ensure Britain retails its leading edge over the rest of Europe

As Ministers prepare to unveil a new land use framework for England this autumn, the scientific evidence behind land sparing as the most effective farm policy for delivering food production, climate and biodiversity goals is compelling. Why then does the UK government continue to favour a land sharing approach through its environmental land management schemes? The recent ‘re-interpretation’ of an expert land use report by the large, land-owning NGOs who commissioned it may provide some clues, writes agricultural economist Graham Brookes.

It is 12 months since I highlighted the scientific evidence pointing to the urgent need to take forward a land sparing approach as the basis of a future UK land use strategy. Favoured by leading UK environmental scientists Andrew Balmford and Ian Bateman, and included in the 2021 National Food Strategy document The Plan, this approach advocates a three-compartment model for land use in Britain which if properly implemented could deliver a more sustainable balance in terms of food production, resource use, nature conservation and climate change mitigation.

I urged a re-evaluation and fine tuning to the Environmental Land Management Scheme (ELMS) in England and its equivalents in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales so that these options and the resources provided to support them better reflect what

the science and evidence tells us.

So 12 months on what progress has been made ?

The need to implement policies that address climate change is now more urgent than ever. The United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres recently reminded us that: ‘The era of global warming has ended, the era of global boiling has arrived. Leaders must lead. No more hesitancy. No more excuses. No more waiting for others to move first. There is simply no more time for that.’

There have also been several new reports emphasising the urgency of implementing land use polices consistent with a land sparing approach. These include a significant new report on land use released last month by the World Resources Institute (WRI). The WRI report notes that around 85% of the world’s usable land has already been heavily harvested for wood or converted to agriculture and that the world is on course to demand more than 50% additional food and wood by 2050 compared to 2010 consumption levels. At present rates of yield increase, this would mean needing to convert an area of natural habitat up to two times the size of India for agriculture to supply this food and wood.

The WRI report offers a fourpronged “Produce, Protect, Reduce and Restore” framework as a potential solution to land use in both our consumption and

production practices. This includes prescriptions to ‘protect’ remaining natural and semi-natural ecosystems; to ‘reduce’ food waste and landhungry consumption practices; and to ‘restore’ forests and wetlands on areas of land where carbon and biodiversity benefits are exceptional, or where food production potential is low.

The ‘produce’ message from the WRI report is equally clear. The world needs to accelerate gains in agricultural productivity to avoid further loss of natural ecosystems. Meeting a projected 56% growth in crop calorie demand between 2010 and 2050 would mean increasing crop yields by 1.2 times the historical yield growth rate from 1960 to 2010 (a 50-year period which included Norman Borlaug’s ‘Green Revolution’).

This same message was relayed in the recent OECDFAO Agricultural Outlook Report 2023-32, which highlighted the urgent need for investments in innovation, further productivity gains and reductions in the carbon intensity of agricultural production to support long-term food security, affordability and sustainability.

Indeed, one FAO official recently took the EU to task for sacrificing agricultural productivity gains in its Green Deal policy approach, which includes targets to halve pesticide use, cut fertiliser use by 20%, and dedicate a quarter of agricultural land to organic farming.

IAN FORMAN - NSTS MANAGER

Fertiliser prices continue to remain high, which makes it ever more important to ensure accurate application of fertilisers again this season. Think about all of the factors that affect spreading, weather and field conditions, operator training and making best use of the technology available all have an impact on accuracy, but with time constraints some of these aspects may get overlooked.

accurately your machine is set up.

Knowing your machine is in good condition and set up correctly is a good starting point and something that can be easily managed both before and during spreading operations.

cases is achievable.

Having a correctly set up machine will also help you meet obligations to protect the environment. NVZ rules and Farming Rules for Water requires farmers to apply fertiliser as accurately as possible to reduce the risk of pollution. Including a border spreading check when having a spreader tested will help meet these requirements, especially when spreading near watercourses.

Advice from AHDB last year suggested in some cases a 20% reduction from RB209 recommended rates for machines not set up accurately. With prevailing high prices this year, and perhaps without the benefit of having some fertiliser left in the shed from 2021 when prices were much cheaper, this should be considered if you don’t know how

Included as part of an NSTS spreader test is a check over the whole machine, paying close attention to the condition of the vanes and agitators. Each product is tested for weight, size and hardness to allow an accurate comparison against manufacturers recommendations for setting up a machine, and adjusted accordingly.

Trays are then laid out across the full width of spread to gain a figure for coefficient of variation (CV). A result of a CV less than 10% is aimed for and in most

For further information, contact NSTS, or go to the website, www. nsts.org.uk where you can search for a Test Centre near you and arrange a test on your machine to ensure it is applying all your fertiliser products on target and evenly across the field.

BIOMARKER ANALYSIS: KEY TO ANIMAL MYCOTOXIN STRESS MANAGEMENT

Despite recent technological advances, mycotoxins are still one of the biggest issues in modern poultry farming

Biomarker analysis: key to animal mycotoxin stress management

Despite recent technological advances, mycotoxins are still one of the biggest issues in modern poultry farming, according to Wyreside.

This article first appeared in the Poultry Health supplement published in August’s issue of Poultry Business

The lack of accurate evaluation tools for the real mycotoxin impact on animals leaves the producer with doubts. However, the introduction of biomarker analysis at industrial level has enabled, the precise measurement of the mycotoxin systemic exposure and its impact on animal performance and health.

A combined feed and blood analyses

For the first time it is possible to achieve what the scientific community, for a long time, theorised as the best method to correctly assess the true exposure of animals to mycotoxins. By detecting them and their

metabolites in bodily fluids, in this case blood. Innovad has validated and patented a method to currently determine 36 different mycotoxin biomarkers in blood using the so-called FTA cards. The cards offer a simple means to easily collect blood spots and dispatch them to our lab for analysis without restrictions.

Biomarkers discovered real risk

The feed mycotoxin analysis combined with blood analysis, provides a more complete overview of the overall mycotoxin risk. Already, a few months after launching the service, more than 3,000 blood samples from birds around the world have been analysed. The considerable volume of analytes tested has enabled an unprecedented reliable assessment of actual mycotoxin exposure on farms. The findings demonstrate that current practices for detecting mycotoxin risk in feed alone are not up to the task. Firstly, a mycotoxin risk was identified in all the studied farms when blood analysis was added whereby, 50% of farms were co-exposed to six or more mycotoxins.

Secondly, a higher number of mycotoxins was detected in blood than in feed, which reveals the greater ability of the former to better detect the true exposure of mycotoxins. Additionally, in most cases (82%) blood analysis uncovered a mycotoxin risk ignored in the feed and which would have otherwise been missed if feed alone was analysed. It is also worth stressing that the emerging mycotoxins produced by Alternaria (like tenuazonic acid) and Fusarium (enniatins and beauvericin) were the most prevalent mycotoxins detected in blood.

Evaluating detoxifier capacity

The Myco-Marker service on >3,000 poultry animals confirmed that farms around the world are continually exposed to several mycotoxins simultaneously, causing economical losses. Until now, the use of mycotoxin binders has been the most common mitigation practice on farm, but their efficacy has been evaluated only through a simple in vitro binding test. However, as the European Food Safety Agency has concluded,

18 | AgriNews | August 2023

BIOMARKER ANALYSIS: KEY TO ANIMAL MYCOTOXIN STRESS MANAGEMENT

Despite recent technological advances, mycotoxins are still one of the biggest issues in modern poultry farming

such simple tests performed “in the glass” do not sufficiently mimic the conditions in the digestive tract and cannot be used to demonstrate efficacy under practical conditions. State of art mycotoxin biomarker research with the University of Gent in Belgium revealed the in vivo detoxification efficacy of Escent S in chickens under multi-mycotoxin exposure scenarios.

Efficacy under real farm conditions

However, it was indispensable to test the detoxifier technology in real farming conditions across all species, where the animals are simultaneously confronted to several stress factors, like climatic conditions, low quality of feed, vaccinations, etc. The Myco-Marker tool was deployed alongside overall performance as well as and clinical symptoms. The analyses revealed that systemic mycotoxin levels were widely reduced (or even completely removed) when animals were treated with the feed additive for a few weeks. In one of the biggest global egg producers, while initially

seven different mycotoxins were detected in blood, only 1 mycotoxin (tenuazonic acid at trace level) was detected after few weeks of treatment usage. This was also accompanied by 5% egg performance improvement and reduction of clinical symptoms like vomits and liver rupture. The findings from all field studies across species confirm unequivocally the solution drastically reduces systemic exposure to mycotoxins where it is really needed, that is, in the real-world environment

Biomonitoring to optimise your mitigation strategy

The combination of the diagnostic tool with the detoxifier offers the producer the innovative RISE biomonitoring program. The program follows a four-tier approach:

Risk: quantification of the true mycotoxin risk combining raw materials, feed and blood analysis Impact: reveal the direct impact of mycotoxins on animal performance and health, specific to the farm Strategy: optimize the mitigation strategy by proceeding to a fully

informed decision regarding the optimum application of the scientifically proven detoxifier technology Evaluation: measure the effectiveness of the mitigation strategy In the last year and a half, producers from all farming species have implemented the biomonitoring program and succeeded to manage the mycotoxin related stress with the help of the detoxifier technology.

In conclusion, mycotoxin biomarker analysis is an essential step forward in mycotoxin stress management plans, as for the first time it measures, the true mycotoxin risk, and the efficacy of mitigation strategies. The comprehensive biomonitoring program provides the producer the ability to quantify the real benefit and ROI of the detoxifier technology specifically for his own farm, in relation to animal performance and health. And of course, save hundreds of thousands or millions.

IN DEPTH: TURKEY REALITY STARTS TO BITE

The planned closure of a turkey processing plant in Wales is bad news for the turkey industry

As we have in the past on trade related matters, we are working with the RSPCA and Compassion in World Farming to hold the UK Government to account for sacrificing its animal welfare principles in pursuit of free trade agreements. I am referring of course to the decision to exclude eggs/ egg products as a sensitive sector in the recently agreed Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). This is even though countries such as Mexico (within the CPTPP block) have an egg sector much larger than that of the UK, or any EU country, but use almost exclusively barrenbattery cage systems that have been illegal in the UK and the EU since 2012. Indeed, even today certain Conservative MPs and government ministers have referenced the fact that we have some of highest laying hen welfare standards in the world, particularly when exploring the idea of banning enriched cages. This is the height of double standards, as you cannot increase animal welfare standards at home, then open your door to products from production systems that are illegal here.

The BEIC responded to the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) and their call for evidence into the roles currently being filled largely by migrant workers, their salaries, and the implication

of any changes proposed by the UK Government. This is largely a continuation of a call for evidence that MAC ran back in September 2020. Overall, the situation has not improved, and in some circumstances, things are much worse. The British egg industry has been struggling to find staff for key roles, such as catchers. The use of Technology can only achieve so much and even efforts to increase automation in the sector cannot replace roles that are essential to protect for farm animal welfare – the UK Government’s current policy approach to migrant workers is putting animal welfare at risk. On-farm roles have been a challenge to fill, but also many off-farm roles including those in packing centres, and even longdistance / heavy goods vehicle drivers.

The All-Party Parliamentary Group for Eggs, Pigs and Poultry, that the BEIC holds the Secretariat for, recently hosted a panel discussion in Westminster to discuss disease preparedness, safeguarding the UK’s food security. Lord Benyon, Minister of State for Biosecurity, Marine and Rural Affairs attended the panel, which I was part of. Jim Shannon MP, as Chair of the APPG, opened the event by saying “To live in a fully functioning, capable, and robust nation, food security is a completely non-negotiable attribute”, and later went to acknowledge that “Disease outbreaks are becoming more frequent, and more severe, not just in the UK but elsewhere in the world”. This has significant

impact on the food supply chain, with catastrophic consequences for farmers. It isn’t confined to farm animals, these diseases spread into the wild animal population, wreaking havoc on our natural eco-systems”.

The event was well attended by members of both the House of Commons and House of Lords. I hope that the work of the APPG will demonstrate how important food security is to everyone and that the parliamentarians that attended will play their part in ensuring the UK Government acts and makes the necessary reforms to better prepare for future disease threats – particularly around AI vaccination.

In the EU, the European Commission is to amend the EU marketing legislation as early as this Autumn to remove reference to the 16-week period whereby FR eggs can maintain their status when FR poultry flocks are required to be housed to protect them against a Notifiable Avian Disease. The British egg industry’s recent experience with AI, the housing order, and the BEIC labelling solution has only served to reinforce the BEIC’s position that the UK Government and devolved governments must follow suit. To help expediate the process, Defra have confirmed that a GB-wide consultation will take place shortly along the same lines. This means that there would be no clock start and FR hens could remain housed until it was safe for them to come out again without loss of FR egg status.

CAN-AM FIND OUT HOW TO RIDE SMARTER AND SAFER

The latest figures from the Health and Safety Executive report, ATV’s were involved in 14 deaths in agriculture

The latest figures from the Health and Safety Executive report that in the last five years, ATVs were involved in 14 deaths in agriculture, which makes it the largest cause of death amongst moving vehicles in the agricultural sector. To ensure ATV users are riding safer and smarter, Can-Am is introducing its top tips for safer riding, underpinned by its Responsible Rider Charter to mark Farm Safety Week (17-21 July).

Can-Am's user guidance will reinforce rider best practices while sparking discussions at work or at home about responsible riding and will challenge users to rethink how they approach rider safety.

Rachael Turner, BRP commercial manager UK and Ireland, says, “14 deaths involving ATVs is 14 too many. As a business, we are committed to educating users on the importance of responsible riding, whether that be through our top tips and charter or by directing users to undertake the

training offered by ATVEA or EASI. We look forward to users benefiting from what we are doing when it comes to rider safety, so they can be safe when riding and can educate friends or colleagues to ensure they are safe as well.”

Can-Am off-road rider safety top tips:

·Make sure that the loads carried on the racks are secure and evenly balanced and do not exceed the capacity of the ATV (check the manufacturer’s recommendations).

·Always be aware of your surroundings and keep your eyes peeled for any pedestrians, livestock, obstructions or other vehicles.

·Regularly Inspect the ATV before use to ensure that it is in good working order.

·Avoid sudden increases in speed as this is one of the common causes of an overturned vehicle.

·Always wear the correct personal protective

equipment (PPE) such as a helmet, boots, long sleeve shirt and trousers when out riding.

·When riding across a slope, keep your weight forward. When going downhill, slide your weight backwards, select a low gear and use engine braking, which leads to the reduction in the need to use the brakes.

·When working a new area, make sure you walk the route before riding through it. This will give you a better perspective of the dangers or obstacles that you could come across.

·You cannot predict the British weather, as one minute it could be bright sunshine and the next it could be pouring with rain, so be aware of changes in ground conditions as these could affect the loads you are carrying or the attachments you are pulling.

·Always read the owner’s manual.

MORE NEW DEALERS FOR CORVUS OFFROAD VEHICLES

Alan McCracken ATV services and Roberts Rural are the latest dealers to join the Corvus dealer network.

Alan McCracken

ATV Services and Roberts Rural are the latest dealers to join the Corvus Off-Road Vehicles dealer network. The announcement comes from BOSS ORV, the sole UK distributor of the Corvus UTV range. Allan McCracken started his business twenty-eight years ago following working for another Yamaha dealer. Based in Castle Douglas, the dealership offers sales and service of ATV’s, walk-behind and ride-on mowers in a thirty-mile radius of the 18th century market town.

“We’re delighted to welcome Allan McCracken and his team as our latest dealership appointment in Scotland,” says Phil Everett, BOSS ORV’s Managing Director. “I have known Alan for over twenty-five years and the quality of service he provides is second to none. I’m looking forward to working with Alan again and developing the Corvus brand in this part of South

West Scotland.” The dealership is well known in the region for selling ATV’s but until now had no off-road utility vehicle offering. The Corvus, Alan says, is ideal for the area and he is pleased to put his name behind a such reputable manufacturer.

Chard in Somerset is the home of Roberts Rural, who has become the authorised Corvus dealer of the area. A familyrun business covering the southwest they supply new and used UTV’s including the new Corvus electric

EX4, diesel and petrol range.

“Welcome to Roberts Rural as our new dealer in Somerset,” says Phil Everett. “It’s great to have John Parry and Ed Cousins on board and we’re looking forward to working with them in this important region.” Roberts Rural provides machinery and parts sales, servicing and maintenance to a range of business sectors including Local Authorities, forestry,

groundscare, agriculture, equine and game keeping.

They will provide Corvus with coverage across Somerset, Devon and Dorset.
