SURVEY FIND ONLY 31% OF DAIRY FARMS FOLLOW BIOSECURITY PROTOCOLS Survey finds only 31% of UK dairy farms follow biosecurity protocols, outlining opportunities to reduce disease through improved practice

S

urvey finds only 31% of UK dairy farms follow biosecurity protocols, outlining opportunities to reduce disease through improved practice Data collected in the 2020 Progiene UK Dairy Biosecurity Survey indicates that most farms have the opportunity to reduce the threat of disease by improving basic biosecurity practice. “Biosecurity certainly isn’t a new areas aspect in the dayto-day running of a dairy farm, but it is a fundamental pillar in preventing disease incidence. This goes on to have short and long-term benefits by improving animal welfare, reducing antimicrobial usage and protecting a farm’s financial and time resources,” says Alison Clark, dairy hygiene specialist for Progiene. While 89 percent of dairy farmers surveyed had biosecurity protocols, only eight percent said they were satisfied with them and only 31 percent reported them being followed closely. Despite protocols being in place, seventy-eight percent of respondents said their farms have had disease pressure in the last two years, reporting:

magnesium levels while simultaneously decreasing calcium. “Milk fever (hypocalcaemia) is a common issue in suckler cows at calving. As soon as a cow calves down and starts milking, her body is going to have massive calcium requirements. While she should have plenty of calcium available in store, she won’t be able to access it quickly enough if it is tied up in bone, which can often lead to milk fever,” says Dr Bond. By reducing calcium supply in the diet in the weeks leading up to calving while increasing magnesium, a cow’s calcium reserves will become mobilised so she can access it more quickly at calving time. Research from SRUC has also indicated that magnesium is critical to aiding uterine contractions to help shorten the birthing process. “The combination of supplementing with magnesium while pulling back calcium has proven to be an effective way of switching on the system to start pulling available calcium from the bone to be made more available to the cow postpartum while simultaneously supporting the birthing process,” explains Dr Bond. TV STAR MATT BAKER TAKES CONTROLS OF JCB MINI FOR TV SPECIAL Popular TV star Matt Baker deployed the might of a JCB mini excavator during a fly-on-the wall TV special about the rescue of his family’s farm

P

opular TV star Matt Baker deployed the might of a JCB mini excavator during a fly-on-the wall TV special about the rescue of his family’s organic sheep farm. Countryfile and former The One Show presenter Matt headed back to his family farm near Durham where he grew up to help keep it running after his mum had a serious accident. And with a list of repairs and renovations to complete, JCB answered the father-of-two’s cry for help and despatched a 1.8 tonne JCB 18Z-1 mini excavator manufactured at JCB's factory in Cheadle, Staffordshire. Among the tasks the JCB machine tackled were the creation of a beach area for a woodland pond and

to move his wife Nicola and their two children north to run the farm.

Matt’s efforts behind the controls of the JCB mini excavator will feature on a new More4 series, Matt Baker: Our Farm in the Dales, which is aired on Wednesday 31st March at 9pm. Matt’s parents, Janice and Mike, live on an organic sheep farm that dates back to the 1600s. Matt still plays a very active role in running the farm, but when his mum had an accident last summer he had

Returning to the remote farm, Matt is faced with the challenge of keeping it running and helping his mum overcome her accident injuries. Championing traditional craft and heritage skills along the way, he also calls on the services of local experts and friends to help out the family – and he even finds the time to save his Dad’s 1946 Dodge car that’s been left in a field for 20 years.

Matt added: “This is without doubt the most personal TV Matt said: “The JCB mini excavator is a great little machine show I’ve ever made. Filming and was really easy to use. Britain’s biggest equipment rental company is investing in 2,100 new JCB machines in a deal worth £65 million

B

ritain’s biggest equipment rental company is investing in 2,100 new JCB machines in a deal worth £65 million – the biggest ever order from a UK customer in the company’s 75-year history. Sunbelt Rentals UK is expanding and renewing its fleet as the construction industry rebounds strongly from the Covid-19 pandemic. The flagship rental company is investing in JCB Loadall telescopic handlers, mini and midi excavators, site dumpers, tracked excavators and rough terrain fork lifts – all manufactured at JCB’s Staffordshire factories. Sunbelt Rentals is also investing in 350 JCB access platforms – JCB’s biggest-ever UK deal for this equipment following its entry into the $8 billion powered access market in 2017.

The machines – supplied by JCB dealer Greenshields JCB – are already rolling off JCB’s production lines and being delivered to Sunbelt’s 200-strong UK depot network.

JCB CEO Graeme Macdonald said: “Sunbelt Rentals is one of JCB’s largest global customers and this huge investement in new and innovative equipment demonstrates its desire to offer the the most advanced machines, featuring the The massive order comes latest ultra-efficient, low as JCB recruits hundreds of emissions engines. NEW STAGE V VERSIONS OF KUBOTA’S L1 AND L2 SERIES NOW AVAILABLE

Kubota has launched two new ranges of compact tractors, building on the success achieved with previous L1 and L2 series

K

ubota has launched two new ranges of compact tractors, building on the success achieved with previous L1 and L2 series. Both new ranges are now equipped with Kubota’s Stage V engines, and the exterior and interior designs have been refreshed giving a stylish new look. The new Kubota L1 series compact tractors have been designed to be highly durable, easy to operate and simple to maintain. There is a choice of three-range HST hydrostatic transmission or a synchronised manual gearbox featuring eight forward and eight reverse gears. With the exception of the entry-level L1382, the L1 tractors are powered by four-cylinder 45hp, 51hp and 55hp Kubota Stage V diesel engines, which make them

exceptionally clean-running. The L1382 uses a DPF-equipped, three-cylinder, 38hp Kubota Stage V engine.

cabin or ROPS versions, 16F+16R mechanical or three-range hydrostatic transmission. Rear linkage lift capacity is 1750kg.

One of the key advantages of Kubota compact tractors is the spacious, comfortable design of their platform, and the L1 series is no exception with a folding rear ROPS frame and a height-adjustable steering wheel. The L1 series also features generous rear lifting capacity, with a maximum lift of 1750kg.

Another key aspect of this latest L2 range is its user-focused design, and an example of that is the one-piece engine cowling that can be fully opened, giving operators effortless access to all important service points and daily checks, in the engine compartment.

Compact tractors in the L2 series feature an improved combination of comfort and efficiency, which makes them ideal for demanding professionals. The L2 range allows users to choose between three different engine outputs from 45-61hp, spacious and well-equipped

In addition, the front axle with bevel gear drive and the integrated power steering deliver effortlessly agile manoeuvrability, suiting use in tight spaces. Both L1 and L2 tractor ranges can be specified with Kubota front-end loaders offering even more versatility and expanding the range of tasks that can be performed. Prices for these latest L1 models start at £15,549 for the L1382, while L2 models are priced from £22,126 for the L2452 ROPS version. Kubota has been a leading manufacturer of agricultural, turf and construction equipment and Industrial Engines since 1890. With world Headquarters in Osaka Japan, and offices in more than 120 countries, and with over 41,000 employees throughout North America, Europe and Asia, Kubota achieved revenues in 2020 of $17.3 billion. Although agricultural equipment is Kubota’s primary line of products, Kubota also produces a diverse portfolio of other products including city wide water filtration systems, irrigation, piping, roofing, housing and large underground

AMAZONE GROUP CONTINUES ITS DYNAMIC GROWTH

For the 2020 financial year, the AMAZONE group exceeded a sales revenue of 500 million Euros

T

he family-run company has placed its total revenue for 2020 at 537 million Euros (2019: €467 million). By doing so, AMAZONE has achieved the highest revenue in its 138-year history. Despite the limitations of the coronavirus pandemic, the company managed to considerably increase its sales. “This is an excellent result and a great success for the entire AMAZONE Group and our partners,” stated Christian Dreyer and Dr. Justus Dreyer. “During the last financial year, the entire team has done its absolute best to maintain normal operations throughout the coronavirus pandemic. Thanks to the strong commitment and discipline of all our employees, and together with our sales partners, we were able to prevent any delays in production and fulfil all our orders.” The company’s broad international positioning in particular played a role in achieving this positive result. With an export proportion of over 80%, and a wide product portfolio for customers of all sizes, AMAZONE benefited from an advantageous position on all the major export markets. Agricultural machinery sales were particularly successful in Germany, Denmark, Belgium,

14 | AgriNews | April 2021

Russia and Austria. The company also achieved excellent sales in France and Poland as well as in Great Britain where Amazone Ltd recorded its best-ever turnover figure which was made possible by a huge increase in sprayer and drill sales. The number of employees remained stable throughout the year, and is currently at 1,900 employees worldwide. Despite the challenging conditions of the coronavirus pandemic during the last year, AMAZONE succeeded in completing various important investment projects as planned. For example, the new spare parts centre – the “Global Parts Center” – opened at the TecklenburgLeeden site. The Centre's increased storage capacity and brand new, state-of-theart logistics concept, resulting in significantly shorter lead times, will ensure excellent service worldwide. In order to expand its international sales activities, AMAZONE opened a new subsidiary in Ukraine. The new location in Kiev will offer local customers improved contact when purchasing machinery and increased service levels. In total, the company's investments in fixed assets

in 2020 were in the tens of millions. More than 6% of its turnover was invested in research and development. This year, a major expansion of the Bramsche site is planned. The large machinery production plant off the BAB A1 motorway will be expanded with 8,000 sq. m. of new floor area. In addition, AMAZONE remains committed to its plans to further develop its product range. AMAZONE has already responded to growing demand for precision agriculture with numerous innovative solutions. In the fertilisation sector, for example, the sensor-controlled “ArgusTwin” lateral distribution system monitors the influence of changing fertiliser properties and automatically optimises the spread pattern. Another example is the “WindControl” system, which takes into account the effect of wind and automatically adjusts the spread pattern to compensate. This prevents over- or under-fertilisation. Pioneering precision technology can also be found in the plant protection sector. “AmaSelect” electric individual nozzle control, combined with “GPS-Switch” automatic partwidth section control, enables part-width sections of only 50 cm. This prevents up to 85% of overlaps in wedge-shaped

AMAZON GROUP CONTINUES ITS DYNAMIC GROWTH

The agricultural and groundcare machinery manufacturer achieved a 15% increase in sales worldwide, compared to the previous year fields or on headlands, and saves up to 10% on plant protection agent cost. The large number of variants in the soil tillage product range, including its range of ploughs, achieved extremely favourable sales figures. The same applies to largearea seed drills which were also well-received in several markets, thanks to the many different sowing techniques possible. In precision seeding technology, AMAZONE has set new benchmarks in precision and speed with the new Precea. Schmotzer Hacktechnik, which has belonged to the AMAZONE Group since 2019, also yielded positive developments. Mechanical weed control is growing in importance, thanks to extremely precise camera, GPS and control technology, and the resulting increased efficiency. Since June 2020, AMAZONE has been conducting a longterm arable farming trial on the experimental farm in Wambergen, with the aid of Schmotzer hoes. Titled “Controlled Row Farming” (CRF), a brand new arable farming system is being trialled on the farm, in which every crop establishment measure takes place in relation to a fixed row.

AMAZONE's goal is to intensify the further development of modern precision technology for increased protection of the climate, natural world and environment, while ensuring maximum yields and reducing costs. An important aspect of this is the digitalisation and networking of all operational processes. “AMAZONE 4.0 is the keyword for our contribution in the field of software, electronics and sensor systems for increased precision, user comfort and transparency,” say the owners. “Our strength is our electronics expertise in the form of an experienced team of developers, who now even software programme inhouse.” Overall, the company foresees many future changes in “intelligent crop production”, with great potential for the company and its sales partners. These range from modernised planting and sowing processes, variety selection and more varied crop rotations, all the way through to the growing of catch crops and undersown crops. AMAZONE’s product strategy has been well-received by farmers, a fact that is reflected by the annually published Image Barometer of the DLG

(German Agricultural Society). In the recently published survey, AMAZONE ranked in fourth place and achieved the best image rating of any mediumsized machinery manufacturer in the agricultural technology sector. “Unfortunately, many agricultural machinery exhibitions and industry events, which would normally provide us with important contact points for the presentation of our innovations, are being cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic,” report the Dreyers. “We are trying to compensate for this with our strong, ubiquitous sales team and dealer network. Besides this, we are continuing to expand our digital communication channels. Our new website, which was redesigned last year, provides information and ways to contact us in a user-friendly layout. In addition, a 360-degree virtual tour provides an insight into the latest product lines of our agricultural and groundcare machinery ranges. The use of various digital service tools has become very well-established in our relationship with our specialist dealers.” April 2021 | AgriNews | 15

SPEARHEAD CROWNS ATTLEFIELD MACHINERY DEALER OF THE YEAR 2020 A specialist machinery supplier near Daventry has been named Spearhead’s Dealer of the Year 2020

A

specialist machinery supplier near Daventry has been named Spearhead’s Dealer of the Year 2020. Noted for tremendous energy and after sales support, the owner, Henry White, is just 29 years old. Attlefield Farm Machinery first stocked Spearhead equipment three years ago. During the last 18 months, their sales performance placed them at the top of Spearhead’s league table. Henry White comes from a well-known family with industry heritage. His father, Patrick White, runs PJ Services, the well-known international haulage company. The White family also run farms in Poland. They used a 450-9S flex-wing topper to bring the farm back into production after 20 years of being fallow. As a youngster, this, Henry says first sparked his interest in the product. An impressive single site dealer In his early 20s, Henry started selling quad bikes. Today, he operates from brand new purpose-built premises with Spearhead equipment at the helm. The Hellidon site includes fully stocked showrooms, offices, and wellrun workshops. For a fledgling dealer, the level of investment 18 | AgriNews | April 2021

and product knowledge is impressive. After sales service is a huge focus for Attlefield Farm Machinery. Stocking plenty of Spearhead parts, they strive to get machinery back in the field quickly. They also deliver parts - next day – with regular demand from across the UK and Europe. Notably, Henry says: “Holding a continual stock of the renowned Multicut 460, 620, and the impressive new Sniper series flail mowers has been key to our success. They are the type of item you must be able to supply immediately.” Attlefield and Spearhead teamwork Attlefield Farm Machinery’s success is also down to the fantastic relationship between themselves and Spearhead. Working closely with Jack Norton (Spearhead Area Sales Manager) Henry is always on the front foot with Spearhead developments. He is also in daily contact with Steven Nel (Spearhead Parts Manager) in Spearhead’s parts department, ensuring he is carrying the correct items to support Spearhead’s wide range of products. The dealer’s success has been helped by nurturing this teamwork. Says Henry:

“I’m delighted Attlefield Farm Machinery has been named Spearhead Dealer of the Year.

It’s great recognition for the team here and I’m happy to keep building on the high standards that we have set ourselves. To my advantage, Spearhead takes centre stage here and I believe we give the brand the energy and attention it rightly deserves. There’s incredible demand for robust mowing and cutting machines across the UK. I couldn’t be prouder to align my business with the quality of Spearhead.” Jack Norton recently presented Attlefield Farm Machinery’s trophy to Henry. Spearhead nominates a Dealer of the Year annually, basing the decision on dealer promise and success. Spearhead Machinery Ltd was established in 1988. The company specialises in the design and manufacture of rotary mowers and mulchers, flail mowers, and reach arm mowers for vegetation management and control. Spearhead machines are designed to last. Built with no shortage of strength, they are renowned as extremely tough pieces of equipment with an extensive service life.

This unique system is now also available for forage harvesters and tractors to take control during other crop unloading operations. Machine Sync was introduced in 2012 and John Deere remains the only supplier of an integrated system. The technology is especially useful during night-time operations and long working days. The global navigation satellite system (GNNS) based synchronisation allows combines to automatically control the speed and travel

direction of tractors and trailers relative to the combine. Machine Sync therefore makes harvesting safer and reduces stress for the operators. It also eliminates waste during unloading and avoids damage to both machines and crops, even at higher driving speeds. The technology is not just applicable to combine harvesters but also to all harvesting processes where crops are continuously loaded into trailers. As a result, John Deere is now offering Machine Sync for use on self-propelled forage harvesters and tractors. In particular, customers working with trailed elevator machinery harvesting

potatoes, carrots and vegetables will benefit from this advanced technology. The system also delivers significant assistance and productivity gains to vegetable growers during planting applications. For operation, Machine Sync requires JDLink telematics, a StarFire satellite receiver and a Gen4 Premium display with automation activation. Most customers would select all these components exfactory when ordering a new tractor and/or self-propelled machine, although retrofitting is also possible.

GLOBAL POULTRY INDUSTRY OUTLOOK PREDICTS MORE MARKET DISRUPTIONS Global poultry industry outlook predicts more market disruptions and volatile feed prices

R

abobank’s latest poultry report notes the industry is facing major challenges due to COVID19-related market disruption, very high and volatile feed prices, avian influenza (AI) in the northern hemisphere, and volatility coming from a bumpy recovery in countries affected by African swine fever (ASF). As countries reopen foodservice, the poultry industry will start to recover, considering that on average 35% of global poultry consumption is via foodservice. “Key for producers in 1H 2021 will be to have a very disciplined supply growth, a focus on cost reduction via procurement, production efficiency, and

24 | AgriNews | April 2021

feed formulation, as well as being prepared for big swings in demand driven by COVID-19-related government decisions,” saId Nan-Dirk Mulder, senior analyst – Animal Protein at Rabobank. Global grain and oilseed prices increased further in Q1 2021, driven by La Niña-upended weather in key producing countries and an unprecedented and long-lasting import demand generated from China. This is a big challenge for chicken producers, as feed represents 60% to 70% of the cost of production. Rabobank expects ongoing high prices during 2021, but slightly down from the current Q1 2021 level. ASF’s impacts on pork

production also have an ongoing impact on poultry, regionally and globally. The two countries in Asia most affected by ASF, China and Vietnam, are both in recovery mode, with China expected to increase pork production by 8% to 10% this year and Vietnam by 8% to 12%. This recovery mode could impact local poultry producers and global trade. “China’s lower-than-expected pork production in Q1 2021 and low chicken production levels supported a chicken price recovery in Q1, but we think that the ongoing expansion of pork, together with further growth of chicken production, will deflate prices later this year. This will also impact import volumes in China,” said Mulder.

They also have the right to be told where the eggs in the food they buy come from, so they are free to make informed purchasing decisions. “For retailers, it’s a winwin, the Lion food safety standards offer unparalleled peace of mind, and they are making customers happy. “The petition is a perfect opportunity for consumers to stand up to the major retailers and show that they are not willing to accept lower standards when it comes to the use of egg in prepared foods – we strongly urge them, as well as all of our colleagues in the British farming industry, to sign and share it. Together we can show our support for British farming and stop British supermarkets using imported eggs in British produced food.” April 2021 | AgriNews | 25

new Lion Training Passport scheme has been introduced by The British Egg Industry Council as a compulsory requirement for all members, revolutionising training practices and ensuring the highest standards of hen welfare industry wide. Created to ensure stockpeople are all trained to the same consistent high standard across all UK egg production farms, pullet rearing farms and pullet hatcheries, the programme covers topics including bird welfare, biosecurity, food hygiene and health & safety. The Lion Training Passport then follows individuals throughout their career in 26 | AgriNews | April 2021

the industry, regardless of the organisation they are working for. Established by an industryled working group comprising the British Egg Industry Council, Poultec Training and Lantram, the training scheme costs £20 plus VAT per person per year, and further details are available on www. liontrainingpassport.co.uk. BEIC chairman Andrew Joret said: “With this new scheme we are revolutionising the way we are able to deliver hen welfare training in the egg laying sector by ensuring stockpeople all receive high quality training and are measured against a

consistent standard of best practice. Good stockpeople are vital to good hen welfare so the introduction of a compulsory passport that can be tracked throughout an individual’s career is a significant achievement and fantastic news for the industry and its customers. “We’re always exploring new ways to develop the Lion Code to ensure the highest standards. Introducing the Lion passport as a compulsory scheme is a sign of our ongoing commitment to deliver and build on those standards.”

STEVE BIRCHALL FOUNDER AND OWNER OF STEVE BIRCHALL POULTRY SERVICES

“It’s not the most glamourous job, but we take price in what we do and the end result is rewarding” WHAT IS YOUR JOB IN A NUTSHELL? I am the founder and owner of Steve Birchall Poultry Services and I have three teams who travel the country cleaning all types of poultry houses. We even strip wash and rebuild traditional free range units, sell second hand diesel washers and supply a range of government approved soaps and disinfectants to your customers. HOW DID YOU END UP WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

At a young age I was always on my grandad’s allotment, after school and at weekends helping out, or as he would call it “being a pain”. I had a fascination with the fancy fowl he kept; he taught me the basics, taught me to care.

at christmas. Working with Shaver breeds and broilers for Moy Park, I was farm manager for the last 8 years of my employment there.

So, in 1970 aged 15 and much to my dad’s disapproval, I left secondary school and went to start my working life at Maple Leaf Hatcheries in Lancashire, I attended Hutton Agricultural College on day release. Maple Leaf was local and to this day I still live in the area. I started work on one of their breeder sites and continued with the same company for the next 15 years.

During my time at Maple Leaf, I got to know many poultry farmers and one asked me if I fancied washing his poultry house for him. And so it began. I invested in a small van and with a 1500psi electric washer, off I went. As i got busier, I started to employ people to help. In the beginning it was mainly broiler sites but the expansion of traditional free-range and now multi-tier systems means those now make up most of our customer base.

I worked on caged sites, broiler sites, rearing farms and even did turkeys

In 1985, Maple Leaf closed and I was made redundant.

We travel all over the country keeping the poultry industry clean.

TWO THIRDS OF FARMERS STILL NOT WEARING HELMET, NEW SURVEY SHOWS According to new research, two thirds of users still don’t wear a helmet when they ride ATV’s because they feel foolish wearing them

T

wo thirds of farmers still not wearing a helmet, new survey reveals

According to new research, two thirds of users still don’t wear a helmet when they ride ATVs because they feel foolish wearing them on their own farm or don’t believe they ride fast enough to warrant them. To help combat this issue and to ensure that the importance of wearing a helmet is highlighted among users when driving an ATV, Can-Am is introducing its seven golden rules for ATV usage as part of its responsible riding programme The report, carried out by Dr Amy Irwin and Jana Mihulkova from the University of Aberdeen, found that 63.5 per cent of respondents stated they owned a helmet but only a third of the sample (29.9 per cent) reported wearing a helmet frequently or always. The research pinpointed several underlying factors, ranging from personal perceptions about helmets and personal barriers that stop farm workers wearing a helmet when using an ATV on their site. The results highlighted the following comments: Personal perceptions: • I do not go fast enough to need head protection in a crash • I feel that helmets are unnecessary for short rides • Helmets are less important for those who ride their ATV infrequently • Since I am not racing or doing

any stunts I don’t really need a helmet • Helmets are only necessary for children aged 16 and below • If you are an experienced rider you don’t need a helmet • Its more important to drive carefully than it is to wear a helmet • You only need a helmet if riding on the road • You only need a helmet if riding on hills • I would not want to spend money on an ATV helmet The norms on site: • As an adult I feel foolish wearing a helmet just to ride round my property • Wearing a helmet makes me look stupid if no-one else is wearing one • Hardly anyone I know wears a helmet The barriers presented by helmet cost and comfort: ATV helmets are uncomfortable to wear • ATV helmets make the user too hot • Wearing an ATV helmet can impair your hearing Daily issues • I often forget to wear my helmet • When in a rush I am less likely to put my helmet on • I can never find my helmet when I am getting ready to ride my ATV • If I am tired, I am less likely to wear a helmet To tackle this issue in 2021 and beyond and to highlight the importance of responsible riding in general, Can-Am is committing

to educate new and existing users with seven golden rules as part of its global responsible rider programme: • Always wear the correct personal protective equipment such as a helmet, boots, long sleeve shirt and trousers when out riding • Prepare an itinerary before setting off and communicate it to the people close to you (colleagues, friends or family) • Follow the recommendations for use that are specified by the manufacturer in the operator’s guide as well as on the safety labels placed on the vehicle • Follow maintenance instructions as recommended by the manufacturer • Inspect the vehicle before use to make sure it is in good working order • Take along communication devices and breakdown equipment • Be mindful of the animals you come across and do not damage their natural habitat James Dalke, BRP commercial manager UK and Ireland, says “As a brand, we are committed to upholding health & safety standards, and our partnership with EASI enables us to offer training to all CanAm customers. The fact that people have a helmet and do not wear it and the reasons why they don’t, reflects a mindset that we are aiming to change through education, as ATVs are the vehicles of choice for farm workers to carry out daily tasks.”
