Tractor of the Year at Lamma

C

LAAS UK will feature a number of new machines on its stand at LAMMA including the new CLAAS AXION 800 series tractor which won both the International ‘Tractor of the Year’ and a ‘Machine of the Year’ award for high horsepower tractors at Agritechnica.

The new AXION 800 range is based upon the higher powered AXION 900 range and incorporates many of the design and technology features found on that tractor.

Like the AXION 900, the new AXION 800 range features a long wheelbase, with 50/50 front/ rear weight distribution and a ‘wasp waist’ front axle design for an increased steering angle and optimum manoeuvrability. The new AXION 800 also uses the new spacious 4-pillar cab design, which is fully suspended and is mounted further forward for greater visibility.

The AXION 800 range consists of four models with CIS and CEBIS variants, with power outputs from 200hp up to 270hp, so fitting in between the 145 to 184hp ARION 500/600 range and the AXION 900 which ranges in power from 280hp up to 400hp.

The AXION 800 is the first tractor to meet the latest Stage IV (Tier 4f) exhaust emissions regulations. To achieve this, the 6-cylinder FPT engine is fitted with a two-stage emissions system consisting of a maintenance free diesel oxidation catalytic converter (DOC/Oxicat) in combination with an SCR catalytic converter.

The 6.7 litre engine features a wide 500 rpm constant power band and 8% more torque that current models, so provides increased power at lower revs, and hence reduced fuel consumption, and is also fitted with the VISCTRONIC fan to further save fuel. In addition, the engine can be used at full power at all times without limitation.

The new AXION 800 is built around a fully integral frame that incorporates a self-supporting crankcase and embedded

sump. This robust design allows a high capacity front linkage to be fitted without any additional bracing, so maintaining maximum manoeuvrability.

Operators benefit from the brand new four pillar cab design initially used on the AXION 900 range. For optimum comfort this benefits from a new specifically developed four-point mechanical cab suspension system, providing the ultimate in comfort. There is also the option of three different suspension seats – including one with automatic ventilation, plus front and rear linkage vibration damping and the PROACTIV front axle suspension.

Built into the right-hand armrest are all the main controls needed to operate the tractor. The main functions are controlled using the CMOTION control which fits comfortably in the right hand. Using just three fingers, all the main controls, such as direction of travel, driving range, Cruise Control, hydraulics, rear linkage, CSM headland management and GPS steering can be controlled, plus a couple of additional function switches allow additional tasks to be allocated.

In front of this is the CEBIS terminal with 21cm screen. CEBIS is quickly and easily accessed and used via a push/turn dial and an ESC key. In addition there is direct access to the spool valves, speed ranges, Cruise Control and function keys.

The Cab has been mounted forward of the rear axle, which provides benefits in terms of comfort, but also enhanced visibility over wide implements. The B pillars are mounted slightly forwards thus further improving all round visibility. The cab also features a one piece windscreen The AXION 800 is available with a HEXACTIV transmission which DLG tests have shown offers extremely high levels of power transfer to the driving wheels and PTO, resulting in increased output and a corresponding reduction in

fuel consumption.

The HEXASHIFT transmission features 6 power shifts within 4 ranges which can be used in either manual or automatic HEXACTIV mode, allowing both clutchless powershift and range changes automatically under load, and is available in both 40kph or 50kph versions.

The REVERSHIFT electrohydraulic clutchless reverser has also been retained, as has the Skipshift function that allows changing up through the gears two at a time, and the Speedmatching function that ensures smooth range changes.

Alternatively the AXION 800 is available with an infinitely variable CMATIC transmission or a CMATIC CVT transmission, using a ZF Terramatic transmission. This incorporates four mechanical gears which are changed automatically via multi-plate clutches, so ensuring excellent driving comfort as well as smooth acceleration from 0.05 km/h to either 40 or 50 km/h.

The CMATIC transmission is available with a choice of two top speeds, 40 km/h or 50 km/h and the AXION 800 reaches such speeds at a fuel-saving 1600 rpm.

Another new feature is the optional engine retarder. By pulling back the CMOTION multifunction lever, the driver can shift down a gear thanks to the intelligent gear management system, thus increasing the engine speed. The engine retarder is activated automatically when required, so no further intervention from the driver is necessary. With this feature, engine braking for on-road driving is up to 2.5 times as effective, which reduces the rate of wear and tear on the foot brake.

The infinitely variable Terramatic transmission has shown outstanding efficiency in the 200-plus horsepower sector, making it a perfect fit with the CLAAS POWER SYSTEMS (CPS) concept.

Another new fuel saving development is a patented de-coupling function for the front PTO. Developed by CLAAS POWER SYSTEMS this enables the front PTO to be completely disengaged when it is not required, and so save fuel. Until now, even when the front PTO is not engaged, the gears in the transmission still rotate and so use up power. The new mechanical clutch means that when the front PTO is not required, the entire front PTO transmission can be disconnected from the engine, which will save an additional 0.4 litres of diesel per hour.

MACHINERY JCB APPOINTS NEW NORTH AMERICAN CHIEF AS PATTERSON RETIRES

J

CB’s John Patterson CBE, who rose through the ranks from field service engineer to Group Chief Executive, has retired after 43 years’ service. His retirement sees Arjun Mirdha take up the position of President and CEO of JCB in North America, where John Patterson has led operations since 2008 as Chairman and CEO. John Patterson joined JCB in 1971 and went on to work in Canada and America before returning to the UK in 1988 as Managing Director of JCB Service. In 1993, John was appointed Managing Director of JCB Sales before becoming Group CEO – only the third person in JCB’s history to hold the position.

He went on to become the company’s second longest serving CEO and in his 10 years in the role, sales broke

the £1 billion mark for the first time, eventually reaching more than £2 billion by the time he stood down in 2008.

He then became Chairman and CEO of JCB Inc based in North America.

JCB Chairman Lord Bamford said: “During John’s time as Chief Executive, JCB achieved unprecedented sales growth and led the company’s transformation into a truly global company. I thank John for his contribution over the past 43 years and am delighted he will remain a Director of the JCB Group and Chairman of the Board of the JCB USA companies.”

Under John Patterson’s leadership as Group CEO, JCB opened facilities in Savannah, Georgia; Sao Paulo, Brazil; Pune, India and Shanghai, China. In 2010 he oversaw a $40 million investment in a new range of skid steer and compact track loaders which

went into production at JCB’s North American HQ in Savannah.

John Patterson said: “I am proof that there are no boundaries to career development at JCB and I have had an incredible time over the past 43 years. T

he FarmGEM Company was formed in July 2009 and as they enter their fifth year the growth of the business and machine portfolio has been astounding.

This is down to several key factors, fantastic UK dealer support, that the GEM Sprayers brand is still held in a very high regard by many growers and the fact that FarmGEM are producing equally strong and reliable machines and backing that up with a three year construction warranty. The company is headed up by Terry Fixter, Managing Director and Cliff Buck, Sales and marketing Director with several other ex-GEM staff also very much involved, bringing easily over one hundred years of combined crop sprayer experience to the company.

The main office and parts stores are based in Southwell, Nottinghamshire with tractor mounted and trailed machines being manufactured in Debrecen, Hungary and self-propelled in Lincolnshire UK. The fact that the machines are

manufactured in Europe brings several advantages, the main one being the access to easily deliver their machines into many markets other than the UK and Ireland.

They have already appointed dealers and delivered machines into Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Bulgaria and even have machines working in the Philippines and The Democratic Republic of the Congo. That said the UK and Irish markets remain key and they have been able to establish a comprehensive dealer network throughout to supply and support their sprayers.

Although a completely new range of sprayers has been designed and developed they have a clear link to the original Gem Sprayer quality but are compliment with a new generation of booms and chassis’s and tanks for both trailed and mounted ranges, along with modern styling.

So the range now comprises of mounted machines with tank capacities from 200 litres to 1900 litres and boom widths from 8m to 26m. The trailed sprayer range boasts three models, the Quartz, Diamond and GEM-Trak which

can provide tank capacities from 2500 litres to 6000 litres and boom options from 18 to 30 metres.

FarmGEM also offer a JCB Fastrac de-mount sprayer which is still proving to be very popular and to complete the range the Sapphire II self propelled sprayer provides the larger farmer or contractor with capacities up to 6000 litres and 36 metre boom widths.

At the LAMMA Show 2013 the most recent additions to the FarmGEM sprayer range were launched. Continued customer demand for a mounted sprayer with a 24 metre gull wing boom led FarmGEM to invest in developing a new mounted sprayer.

The NEW FSE1600 with a 12/20, 21 or 24m gull wing boom along with a new front mounted tank range.

Although several manufacturers have stopped manufacturing a mounted sprayer with a gull wing boom and now focus on only a vertical fold boom on their mounted machines.

FarmGEM feel this is not the answer for everyone, as many farmers and contractors do not like the more light weight design of the vertical fold boom along with all its wearing fold joints. But prefer the stronger more robust build of a gull wing boom.

Also new is the FT 3 point linkage mounted front tank range offer both 1200 litre and 1400 litre tank sizes which have been designed to provide maximum forward visibility. Hydraulically driven transfer/agitation pump, in-cab electronic control, dry tank contents gauge and road lighting are all included in the standard specification.

Finally the Quartz trailed sprayer, a lower specification trailed sprayer joins the UK offering. The Quartz was originally designed due to the high demand from Eastern European dealers and customers. The Quartz offers either a 2500 or 3000 litre tank, booms from 18 -24m.

Although designed to com-

plement the more highly specified Diamond and GEM-Trak models the Quartz still has plenty features of its own. Including clean water tank and flushing system, chemical induction hopper, clothing locker, 13mm stainless steel spraylines, full electronic control of main on/ off, 5 boom sections and pressure adjustment.

The Quartz uses the same booms that are fitted to the both Diamond and GEM-Trak. As with the former Gem Sprayer range, high quality and strength remain key.

New Holland presents its views on mechanization trends in Europe and the Middle East at the Agrievolution Forum.

New Holland Agriculture took part in the 2013 Agrievolution Forum, held on December 5 and 6 in New Delhi, India, which focused on global food security and farm machinery.

The Forum, which was the 4th World Summit on Agriculture Machinery, was hosted by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) in conjunction with EIMA AgriMach India and gathered key agriculture stakeholders, decision makers and influencers from around the world to identify issues in today’s world agriculture and share solutions for the future.

emissions, while supporting the development of a sustainable agriculture with the right equipment and the promotion of farming practices that minimize waste and soil deterioration while optmimizing productivity.

The two-day Forum was organized on the occasion of the EIMA AgriMach India show, of which New Holland is Platinum Sponsor.

Cleaning up your act with Steve Birchall

S

teve Birchall has some sound advice for poultry producers.

No poultry producer can afford to hinder flock performance by allowing a build up of micro-organisms. Even low disease levels drag profits back, and skimping on the cleaning routine between flocks is false economy, says Lancashire based cleaning specialist Steve Birchall.

“There is no opportunity these days to rest buildings between flocks. Turn around times are tight and it is, therefore, vital that buildings are not only thoroughly cleaned but they are disinfected as well. If there has been a health problem the cleaning and disinfection treatment should take account of it,” says Steve, who has been operating a nationwide contract poultry shed cleaning business for over 30 years.

“Older buildings are more difficult to clean than more modern ones,” Steve says “But if you are going to do the job at all then its worth doing it properly and you have to take sufficient time, particular in breeder/laying units where nest boxes and equipment have been in place for 12 months or more.

Broiler units with a 6 or 7 day turnaround are less difficult. However, people who prefer to do what is a rather unpleasant job themselves often get rather jaded before it has been done properly and if there are other enterprises on the farm they have to keep breaking off to do other

work. Poultry buildings, weather they are broiler, breeder, layer or turkey units not only need to look clean, they must be disease free.
