Farming is an industry steeped in tradition but more farmers than ever are turning to the web to run their businesses. It is more important than ever to think about farming differently with produce prices falling and costs increasing, farmers need a site that thinks differently. Not just your standard listings but a dynamic approach to selling and buying.

Farming Hub is the brain child of Pembrokeshire farmer Lawrence Couzens who in 2012 conceived an idea for a new format of farming website, simplifying the process of buying and selling. This led to the launch of Farming Hub, an online hub for farmers to buy and sell initially farm machinery. “I have worked in agriculture for over 21 years and have always found it difficult to find

the farm equipment I required. I just wanted to go to one site and find the machine or part I needed,’’ explained Lawrence, who worked on farms before returning home to the family farm in Pembrokeshire.

Farming Hub was launched January 2013, we now have almost 10,000 twitter followers, a huge following on facebook, and the site has a comprehensive selection of traders with a good selection of equipment. Farminghub.co.uk has been such a success it is having an updated to offer more, the updated site will be available in October, we will be adding to the site to make it a true Hub for farmers. We are always delighted to receive feedback.

The FarmGEM Company was formed in July 2009 and as they enter their seventh year the growth of the business and machine portfolio has been astounding. This is down to several key factors, fantastic UK dealer support, that the GEM Sprayers brand is still held in a very high regard by many growers and the fact that FarmGEM are producing equally strong and reliable machines and backing that up with a three year construction warranty. The company is headed up by Terry Fixter, Managing Director and Cliff Buck, Sales and marketing Director with several other ex-GEM staff also very much involved, bringing easily over one hundred years of combined crop sprayer experience to the company. The main office and parts stores are based in Southwell, Nottinghamshire with tractor mounted and trailed machines being manufactured in both Greece and Hungary and self-propelled in Lincolnshire UK. The fact that the machines are manufactured in Europe brings several advantages, the main one being the access to easily deliver their machines into many markets other than the UK and Ireland. They have already appointed dealers and delivered machines into Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Uzbekistan and Bulgaria and even have machines working in the Philippines and The Democratic Republic of the Congo. That said the UK and Irish markets remain key and they have been able to establish a comprehensive dealer network throughout to supply and support their sprayers.

Although a completely new range of sprayers has been designed and developed they have a clear link to the original Gem Sprayer quality but are compliment with a new generation of booms and chassis’s and tanks for both trailed and mounted ranges, along with modern styling. So the range now comprises of mounted machines with tank capacities from 200 litres to 1900 litres and boom widths from 8m to 26m. The trailed sprayer range boasts three models, the Quatz ECO, Quartz, Diamond and GEMTrak which can provide tank capacities from 2500 litres to 6000 litres and boom options from 18 to 30 metres. FarmGEM also offer a JCB Fastrac de-mount sprayer which is still proving to be very popular and to complete the range the Sapphire II self propelled

sprayer provides the larger farmer or contractor with capacities up to 6000 litres and 36 metre boom widths.

Continued customer demand for a mounted sprayer with a 24 metre gull wing boom led FarmGEM to invest in developing a new mounted sprayer. The FSE1600 with a 12/20, 21 or 24m gull wing boom along with a new front mounted tank range. Although several manufacturers have stopped manufacturing a mounted sprayer with a gull wing boom and now focus on only a vertical fold boom on their mounted machines. FarmGEM feel this is not the answer for everyone, as many farmers and contractors do not like the more light weight design of the vertical fold boom along with all its wearing fold joints. But prefer the stronger more robust build of a gull wing boom.

Also new is the FT 3 point linkage mounted front tank range offer both 1200 litre and 1400 litre tank sizes which have been designed to provide maximum forward visibility. Hydraulically driven transfer/ agitation pump, in-cab electronic control, dry tank contents gauge and road lighting are all included in the standard specification.

Finally the Quartz ECO and Quartz trailed sprayers, a lower specification trailed machines compliment the UK offering. The Quartz models were originally designed due to the high demand from Eastern European dealers and customers. The Quartz offers either a 2500 or 3000 litre tank, booms from 12 -24m. Although designed to complement the more highly specified Diamond and GEM-Trak models the Quartz still has plenty features of its own. Including clean water tank and flushing system, chemical induction hopper, clothing locker, 13mm stainless steel spraylines, full electronic control of main on/ off, 5 boom sections and pressure adjustment. The Quartz uses the same booms that are fitted to the both Diamond and GEM-Trak. As with the former Gem Sprayer range, high quality and strength remain key. As with all FarmGEM sprayers the machine is delivered NSTS tested and covered by the FarmGEM “3 Year WARRANTY” - a second and third year construction warranty, in addition to the standard full first year warranty.

New following roller with Matrix tyre profile To expand the working spectrum of the wedge ring roller, Amazone has developed a version with a new Matrix tyre profile.

The special feature of this roller is the specific longitudinal and lateral profiles of the Matrix tyres. Whereas the longitudinal profile creates the desired strip-wise reconsolidation of the soil, the narrow cross bars on the profile provide more fine soil, resulting in optimum growing conditions.

When attached as the following roller on the rear of the Certos TX heavy compact disc harrow or the Cenius TX mulch cultivator, the new roller offers several advantages. So, the combination of this new profile and the 650 mm diameter tyres reduces the rolling resistance and thus the pulling power required in the field.

The intensified adherence of the tyre profile with the soil results in an improved self-driving effect for the roller that again reduces pulling power as well as fuel consumption.

Especially on lighter soils an improved carrying capability and a higher through passage is achieved. On heavier areas, the Matrix tyre profile ensures, even under moist conditions, an improved crumbling effect.

20 years Super-S Interview with the inventor

In 2014 the Super-S boom celebrates its 20th birthday. Since the first machines were deliveried in 1994, many thousands of sprayer booms have been put into operation. From then until today, numerous details have been further-developed, however, the ingenuity is still as young and unrivalled now as it was then.

Why the Super-S boom of today, and of years ago, can still feature so many ingenious characteristics you can get a feel for by reading an interview with its designer, Dipl. Eng. Friedrich Oberheide.

Mr. Oberheide, which peculiarities have made the Super-S boom so successful?

Friedrich Oberheide: there are two areas I would like to mention first . They are, on the one hand, the vertical folding technology which enables its especially narrow transport width of just 2.4 m whereas, on the other hand, the Super-S boom is lighter than other booms but nevertheless the design is very strong. However, back then, these advantages were not new to us because we had already implemented them in the preceding boom, the so-called H-boom. But then, on the Super-S boom, all the segments could be folded via individual hydraulic rams at the pivot joints.

Today such a folding system is a matter of course, but twenty years ago this just was the key point to be that decisive improvement.

So, the vertical folding technology existed already prior to the Super-S boom?

Friedrich Oberheide: yes, the first vertically folding boom for crop protection sprayers had already been developed by AMAZONE in 1980 in small numbers. This boom already featured a width of 18 metres; however, it still had to be folded by hand. Then increasingly, the demand

for a hydraulically folding boom arose so that the driver did not have to leave the tractor.

Was AMAZONE, with this boom, the first manufacturer to rely on the vertical folding technology for crop protection sprayers?

Friedrich Oberheide: yes, indeed, this technology we developed here at AMAZONE. And what did the first hydraulically folding booms look like?

Friedrich Oberheide: by 1986 we produced the so-called H-boom, initially up to 16 metres and later up to 21 metres working width. These booms had already been of a lightweight design; however they were equipped with just two large hydraulic rams for folding out and for folding in. These rams served as a lever for the stainless steel (V4A) ropes which were guided via pulleys of differing size at the individual boom segments. The actuation of this boom was very simple, because via a sole double-acting control valve on the tractor, the boom was folded in or out and working width reduction was possible.

This functioned very well; however, it still had the decisive disadvantage that neither one-side folding nor a definitive reduction was possible.

Back again to the vertical folding of the Super-S boom: where are the decisive benefits?

Friedrich Oberheide: the decisive benefit can be summarised in one sentence: "Where your tractor can fit through the Super-S boom can also fit."

Thanks to the vertical folding to the rear of the sprayer, the Super-S boom has a transport width of only 2.4 m. This is a very important criterion for safety in road traffic. So, collisions with the boom can be avoided. At the same time the slight inclination of the boom towards the front improves the centre of gravity. Especially on mounted sprayers, every kg of weight that is saved is of great value. In addition, in road transport, the boom sits absolutely fixed in its transport hooks.

So we prevent rattling and wear during fast road transport or when going over potholes. Because the boom is folded to the rear of the sprayer, no spray agent drops onto the tractor or the operator terminal on the sprayer as with other boom folding systems.

Numerous gold & silver awards recognise John Deere R&D efforts Sustainable farming will continue to benefit from relevant innovations Mannheim, 9 September 2015 – The innovation committee of the German Agricultural Society (Deutsche Landwirtschaftsgesellschaft - DLG) has recognised numerous innovations from John Deere and partner companies with three gold and 10 silver medals. The award winning innovations were selected from 311 entries and will be presented at this year’s Agritechnica, the world’s largest agricultural equipment fair (10-14 November 2015 in Hannover, Germany).

“The large number of awards is a result of the company’s continuing high investment into research and development,” said Chris Wigger, John Deere’s Region 2* vice-president sales & marketing. “We are particularly proud that our industry partners and service providers can take a lot of the credit for achieving these significant results. As our industry undergoes a paradigm shift towards more integrated technology, these jointly awarded intelligent solutions clearly demonstrate John Deere’s commitment to system openness and our willingness to collaborate with partners. KUHN to demo faster drilling speeds from low hp tractors at Tillage Live KUHN Farm Machinery will be demonstrating its new 6-metre minimum tillage drill for the first time on UK soils at this year’s Tillage Live event.

Capable of being pulled by a 200 hp tractor and drilling accurately at forward working speeds of up to 17km/h, the KUHN ESPRO offers high levels of productivity and drilling accuracy without the need to invest in ultra-high power tractors.

Duncan McLeish, UK Sales Manager for KUHN Farm Machinery explains that forward operating speed is a key priority when drilling new crops and that the company’s new ESPRO machine enables increased productivity without the loss of seeding accuracy. “The ability to drill quickly is vital to ensuring that crops are sown when soil conditions are at their best,” he said. “But this speed should never be at the expense of drilling accuracy. Nor should it compromise overall operational efficiency, which means horsepower requirements should also be a consideration.”

KUHN’s new ESPRO minimum tillage drill has a 6-metre working width and has been designed with an equal focus on three key aspects of the drilling process: speed, accuracy and efficiency.

Two rows of 460mm concave discs open the soil, incorporate all residues into the surface layers and create a fine tilth, even in heavy conditions.

These discs are followed, in the centre of the drill, by a row of 900mm diameter press wheels which create an evenly consolidated soil profile for consistent soil-to-seed contact.

The large diameter of the press wheel helps to reduce the overall rolling resistance of the ESPRO, with the deep-treaded tyres also augmenting improved soil crumbling for a finer tilth.

LINCOLNSHIRE agriculture giants Horsch will be returning to the annual Midlands Machinery Show this November.

One of the leading farming manufacturers based in Bourne will be bringing its two most popular sowing and cultivation products, Pronto DC and Joker RT, to be displayed at the show on 25 and 26 November.

The Show, now in its second year, continues to grow and Horsch was keen to attend the event held at Newark Showground, to meet potential customers.

Horsch general manager Stephen Burcham said: “We were at the show last year and it was great for us and we feel it’s important to have a presence there again.

“With 5,000 in attendance last year and hopefully more potential this year, it’s an important event for us and one we strategically want to be a part of.

“We had some excellent feedback last year and plenty of enquiries which is key to our business in our most quiet period year.

“The show is becoming recognised as a great place to get in the eye-line of potential customers, meet existing traders and network with key innovators in the industry. We feel it is certainly

worth attending.”

The event expects to have between 150 to 160 stands over the two days and trade space is running out fast.

THE MIDLANDS MACHINERY show is returning to Newark Showground this year with a series of new product launches and technical seminars for the second year running.

Organised by the Newark and Nottinghamshire Agricultural Society, the show is a platform for small to medium-sized agricultural businesses to show their diverse range of machinery and innovation to those who work and have an interest in agriculture.

Taking place on 25 and 26 November 2015, the Midlands Machinery Show is well known as a rapidly growing event for visitors and traders to brush shoulders with some of the key innovators in industry.

Entries are now open to dealers and manufacturers to book their trade spaces both indoors and outdoors.

Organisers are encouraging exhibitors to book now and secure their place.

Jayne Olney, showground manager, said: “This year is the second year we have run this event and we are looking forward to welcoming even more attendees than last year.

“In its first year, we had a tremendous amount of positive feedback from exhibitors and we pride ourselves on our ability to attract the big name brands in the agricultural industry while also maintaining a sense

of intimacy.

DINN 1055 was always considered to be the highest standard available for silos. The new Eurocode surpasses DINN 1055 and the latest version of Eurocode looks in further detail at the loads imposed within the silo by the grain.

On the smaller bins this has a lesser effect on the silo build-up as our silos are to such a high engineering standard. On the larger silos we start to take into account the “patch� load. When designing these larger silos we have to assume that a given amount of grain will stick to one side of the silo. This gives an uneven hoop and vertical

load which the silo must withstand.

Our silo barrels utilise 100mm of pitch of corrugated steel, which adds strength and helps to reduce product hang-up. These are produced from prime high tensile steel. Very high yield strength contributes to a solution that increases the payload capacity and gives higher strength structures. This steel is corrugated and rolled in our modern factory using state of the art equipment ensuring that every sheet is the same. This not only aids assembly but gives a strong, water tight joint.

Our recently developed new vertical seam bolting pattern still uses a two row system, reducing erection time over other designs and increasing the bearing capacity of the joint by 5%. The spun galvanised bolts also help to extend the life of the silo. The way we connect our stiffeners differ from other silo manufacturers. Rather than relying on edge to edge contact or bolt shear to transfer loads we use a horizontal plate to transfer the axial load from stiffener to stiffener.

Compared to other companies, our galvanisation process ensures that we use G600 as standard, which greatly increases the life expectancy of our silos. In tropical marine areas, you can expect silos to last around 35 years. Countries that have high levels of precipitation and humidity will rely on galvanisation in order to protect them from this corrosion. DINN and Eurocode engineering designs are helping us to remain at the forefront of grain storage engineering capabilities, with key preferred supplier status being achieved with major companies worldwide.

The DEUTZ-FAHR 5 Series is powered by state of the art engines that deliver outstanding performance, reliability and durability. The Tier 4i compliant, 3620 cm続, four-cylinder DEUTZ TCD 3.6 L04 engine features turbo-intercooler forced induction and common rail fuel injection. Tier 4i compliance was achieved by adopting an EGR exhaust gas recirculation system in conjunction with a special DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst) catalytic converter, which catalyses chemical reactions within the exhaust gases on contact to transform them into harmless substances.

The technologically advanced DOC system differs from conventional FAP filters (which produce harmful exhaust back-pressures) and SCR (which needs additives such as AdBlue to trigger selective catalytic reduction) is the ideal solution as it does not require energy-costly regeneration cycles, maintenance-free and small enough for installation even on compact tractors.

Another factor contributing to the extraordinary productivity of this series of tractors is a practically flat torque curve between 1200 and 1900 rpm, which ensures a torque reserve of over 30% throughout the range of engine speeds used in the majority of agricultural applications.

At higher engine speeds, power remains constant within the band from 1800 to 2200 rpm, for progressive, smooth operation even during jobs with very high power demands.

The electronic engine governor eliminates fuel wastage, by delivering only the power effectively needed for the job in hand.

A modular, efficient transmission.

The transmission configuration of the DEUTZFAHR 5 series has been conceived from the outset for modularity.

The base configuration, offered in 5100I5110I5120|5130 models, consists of a synchromesh five speed, two range mechanical gearbox with hydraulic Power Shuttle, for a total of ten forward and reverse speeds.

Case IH Optum CVX The Optum CVX range consists of two models with compact 6.7 litre NEF engines from FPT Industrial, with 270 or 300hp at a rated speed of 2,100rpm and a maximum power of 313hp at 1,800rpm for the larger of the two models. The engines feature Hi-eSCR only after-treatment solution for maximum combustion efficiency and fulfil Stage IV emission regulations. Changes for the engine include new valve material and design for the engine head for higher combustion pressure; however the major change comes in the lower part of the engine block and oil sump, with a specific design where the sump serves as backbone of the tractor, thus removing stress from the engine block.

The New Holland range of construction equipment is now available through a selection of New Holland’s extensive network of UK agricultural dealers.

More than 20 agricultural dealers from across the UK and Ireland have already signed-up with more dealers being added to the list in the coming months.

The New Holland range of construction equipment available through the dealers includes five skid-steer loaders, three backhoe loaders, three wheeled loaders and eight mini excavators.

In addition, a series of different attachments and parts that can be added to this equipment will be available to fully exploit its versatility.

An analysis of industry trends and customer needs has revealed the widespread use of construction equipment in agriculture, where it’s performing very well. The move to supply New Holland’s construction equipment through its agricultural dealers enables the brand to better serve its agricultural customers, while offering dealers an opportunity to expand their product portfolio.

New Holland’s construction light equipment and compact tractor manager, James Emery, said customer would be the biggest beneficiary of this extended product offering.

“We will be able to cover better their equipment needs,” he added. “Whether the application is bulk material handling on large-scale farms and contracting businesses, drainage or row maintenance on speciality fruit farms, or the diverse range of daily tasks performed on livestock units, having the right tool is the key to efficiency, productivity and profitability.”
