Kuhn mowers and rakes on display at Grassland and Muck ‘17

Kuhn Farm Machinery will be displaying a wide selection of hay and silage making equipment at this year’s Grassland and Muck event, with key machines at the show on 24th and 25th May including the FC 3160 TCD RA centre-pivot trailed mower conditioner with grouper functionality, the GA 13131 four rotor grass rake, and the GMD range of disc mowers.

Ideally suited to large-scale farming operations and grassland contractors, the FC 3160 TCD RA offers all the key advantages associated with KUHN’s standard centre pivot mower conditioner (the FC 3160 TCD), such as greater mowing versatility and reduced ‘dead time’ on headlands, as well as having the ability to group two swathes of grass together.

The FC 3160 TCD RA uses a conveyor belt grouper unit that enables two rows of grass to be placed together to form a twin swath for increased output of the subsequent forage harvester. The conveyor also enables two rows of grass to be formed into a single, layered swath that can be picked up by balers or loader wagons with a narrower pick-up width.

The addition of a belt conveyor saves time and fuel by reducing the number of subsequent passes needed with a grass rake or forage harvester.

It also reduces leaf losses and prevents soil or foreign materials being incorporated into the swath during raking.

The hydraulically driven grouper belt is powered by a pump mounted on the machine’s GYRODINE swivelling headstock and can deliver the cut and conditioned crop to either side of the machine.

The speed of the conveyor belt can be instantly increased or decreased to take into account the amount of crop being cut or to alter the width of the finished swath when working on sloping terrain.

The FC 3160 TCD RA uses seven cutting discs (each fitted with KUHN’s FAST-FIT knives as standard) giving it a 3.1 metre working width and a 2.99 metre travelling width. The speed of the steel finger conditioning flails can be set at either 780 or 1,000 rpm according to the crop being worked.

All functions – such as belt speed, direction of delivery and lifting options – can be adjusted from the comfort of the tractor cab via a central control box. The FC 3160 TCD RA is also fitted with wide profile, low-pressure tyres for reduced soil compaction and improved performance on sloping ground.

The GA 13131 Gyrorake has a working width of 8.4 to 12.50 metres and is designed for use on farms where a high work output is required. The machine features four rotors, the front hold 11 tine arms and the rear hold 12 per rotor, each with four tines per arm.

Each rotor is mounted on four pivoting, large diameter wheels for excellent ground contouring and high load bearing. The wheels sit close to the tines to further improve ground following, while Kuhn’s three-dimensional rotor suspension system provides even greater stability when working at high speeds.

Rotor working height can be adjusted hydraulically as standard, with all four rotors powered by Kuhn’s headstock-mounted hydraulic drive unit which gives the option to increase front rotor speed by up to 20% when working in lighter crops.

The four rotors work together to create one perfectly formed central windrow (from 140 to 240 cm in width) and are controlled via a cab-mounted VT50 series terminal which is ISOBUS compatible and which allows operating sequences to be preprogrammed for easy u-turns. Each rotor can be lifted individually for a perfect finish and to give the machine higher ground clearance for ease of manoeuvring and unhindered travel across uneven terrain.

The GA 13131 is characteristically robust and utilises Kuhn’s Masterdrive GIII gearbox to reduce power transfer stresses and provide reliable service with low maintenance: the Masterdrive’s patented two-stage design uses bevel and spur gear reduction and is totally enclosed for minimal maintenance – service intervals are every 200 hours.

The GA 13131 requires a minimum PTO power output of 95hp. When in transport position, it stands at less than 4 metres in height, folding to 3 metres in width, making roadwork easy and safe.

Kuhn GMD Disc Mower – celebrating 50 years 2017 marks the 50th anniversary since the first Kuhn GMD disc mower was launched. Kuhn will be commemorating this by displaying an original GMD 4 at Grassland and Muck. The model to be displayed was built in 1969 and was in constant use until 12 months ago when it was finally retired.

The machine has recently been acquired by Kuhn in France and is destined to become a key feature of the company’s museum collection.

Midlands and Wales based machinery dealer Rea Valley Tractors has been recognised as a National Spreader Testing Scheme (NSTS) approved fertiliser spreader test centre. The award came after two of its specialist technicians passed a three-day examination and practical assessment.

Sitting alongside the National Sprayer Testing Scheme, the NSTS takes on board economic, environmental and compliance issues to deliver this national standard for fertiliser spreader tests.

The spreader testing protocol ensures all spreaders; disc, boom and pendulum, are tested to the same exacting standard.

While the immediate impact of inaccurate spreading is financial, it can also affect conservation field margins and lead to contamination of water courses.

According to Defra’s fertiliser manual (RB209), fertiliser spreaders should be regularly maintained and serviced, replacing worn parts as necessary. To check uniformity of spread pattern, trays should be used to produce a coeffiNational Sprayer Testing Scheme.

The NSTS recognises that a coefficient of variation of more than 20 per cent will lead to visible striping in crops. And as this figure increases from 20 to 30 per cent, crop yields in wheat and oilseed rape for example, are likely to be reduced. Even if there’s no visible stripes in the crop, there’s no guarantee that fertiliser is being evenly distributed cross the desired working width.

The NSTS has been created to promote efficient use of fertilisers and to help growers achieve better yields. Additional benefits of annual testing include; the meeting of cross compliance and NVZ regulation, and ultimately delivering peace of mind that fertiliser application is correct.

Sprayer testing and the recent changes in legislation – Ian Forman NSTS Manager As part of the Sustainable Use Directive (SUD), pesticide application equipment (PAE) testing in Europe became a legal requirement from 26th November 2016. Sprayer testing has been part of crop assurance protocols for many years but now all professional users will have to get their machines tested.

Slug pellet applicators, granular applicators, seed treatment equipment and weed wipers are some of the other machines that now need testing. There are variations in timescales of retest dates depending on the size or type of equipment so check the NSTS website www. nsts.org.uk for full details. Knapsack, handheld and pedestrian sprayers do not require an NSTS test but must be inspected on a regular basis by a competent person, repairs made and a record kept of that inspection.

With Brexit just around the corner we are being asked what will happen with sprayer testing in the UK once we have left the EU. One thing is certain, the UK must continue to trade with the rest of Europe so whatever we do will have to be as good as the European standard or better for them to accept our produce.

A new standard for sprayer testing is now being applied and you will see additional test items the next time you have your sprayer tested. that this allows safe emptying and does not contaminate the operator or the environment.

Machine examiners are also carrying out 2 checks on electronic controllers; a flow rate check which is combined when doing the nozzle flow rates and also checking the forward speed is reading correctly by timing the sprayer over a 100 metre run. It is a requirement of crop assurance that a calibration is carried out regularly and this could be completed at the same time as the NSTS test.

We strongly encourage operators to carry out regular maintenance throughout the year to ensure their equipment is applying pesticides safely and accurately and an operator check sheet is available from the NSTS website to download. The most common faults found during the test are leaks and drips, but dirty filters and worn nozzles are also regularly seen. All sprayer tests are now recorded electronically and you will receive a link via email to view your certificate, at the same time the test is registered with NSTS. An NSTS test on your machine ensures that you are compliant with the legislation but also that it is safe to use and will apply pesticides safely and accurately. It also helps to reduce costly downtime, very important when the window for timely applications can be quite narrow during the season.

Kubota’s M5001 series makes its mark at FTMTA

Farmers and contractors had the opportunity to get a close look at Kubota’s wide range of agricultural and construction machinery solutions at this year’s FTMTA show, with the company’s M5001 Series one of the highlights of the show.

Visitors to Ireland’s premier farm machinery event had the chance to see the Japanese manufacturer’s M5001 Series for the first time, with the recently launched M5111 making its show debut in Ireland.

In addition, Kubota also showcased its 150hp M7151 tractor, along with other solutions from its machinery range, including the RT270D wheeled loader, the KC70 track dumper, and the market leading K008-3 mini-excavator.

Kevin Pryce, Kubota’s agricultural dealer manager for Ireland, said: “We were absolutely delighted to see so many potential customers on stand and also catch up with existing customers to show them what’s new and the investment we are making in our agricultural range.

“The feedback we had, particularly for the M5111 and the M7151, was extremely positive and got a lot of attention. The market is realising the commitment Kubota is making in the mainstream agricultural market, not only with the M5001 and MGX-III ranges, but also with our flagship higher horse power M7001 Series.”

Kubota’s new M5001 Series comes in two models, the M5091 and M5111, offering 95hp and 113hp respectively. With styling that mimics the M7001, the M5001 is a simple, mechanical power unit that is ideally suited for the Irish livestock sector. Powered by Kubota’s market leading four cylinder V3800 engine, the 3.8 litre unit utilises common rail injection and cooled EGR, combined with a range of after treatment items to meet Stage IV emissions that includes DOC, DPF and SCR technology.

Kevin continued: “Our new M5001 Series, which supersedes the M8560 and M9960 models, is generating a lot of interest based on its leading edge technology to maximise power and performance for farmers and contractors.

Key features include its ease of use, driving convenience, the versatility of the tractor and its manoeuvrability.”

The M5001 Series includes a 40-ECO transmission with six synchronised gears and dual speed High-Lo technology, allowing farmers and contractors to change gear directly, gently

and quickly. The electro-hydraulic reverser, which avoids using the clutch, provides a fast and gradual change in direction that reduces emissions and increases user comfort and control.

To further support ease of use, the retrofit ISOBUS system and range of solutions in precision farming allows pesticides and fertilizers to be applied and seeding jobs be carried out efficiently, cost-effectively and precisely.

Facilitating this is the advanced and improved dashboard which provides a wide range of operational information in real time, including fuel usage and particulate matter indication, installed discreetly within the cab.

The latest cab design provides maximum operator control and comfort, designed specifically for jobs that demand excellent manoeuvrability and a demanding operability.

Update on biosecurity measures to protect against Avian Flu

The government has today set out initial plans to update temporary measures in place to reduce the risk of avian flu in England, after the current Prevention Zone expires on 28 February 2017.

Based on the latest situation and current scientific advice from the Chief Veterinary Officer, from 28 February the government anticipates adopting a more targeted approach with mandatory biosecurity measures across the country and continued housing or range netting in higher risk areas. These measures would be reviewed at the end of April.

Currently, anyone who

keeps poultry or captive birds is required by law to house them, or otherwise keep them separate from wild birds, to reduce the risk of disease spreading. This requirement remains in place until 28 February and guidance on how to comply is available online.

The proposed temporary measures are designed so keepers can allow birds outside from 28 February, whilst still taking reasonable precautions against avian flu during the current outbreak. A final decision will be confirmed at the end of February.

Public Health England advises that the risk to public health from avian flu is very low and the Food Standards Agency has said there is no food safety risk for UK consumers.

our priority. Based on the current situation, we believe mandatory biosecurity across England, combined with targeted housing or range netting in higher risk areas, is the best option to control disease, protect birds’ welfare and ensure consumers can buy free range products.

We have acted swiftly to limit the spread of H5N8, including requiring all birds to be housed or kept separate from wild birds. The twelve week housing requirement has allowed keepers time to introduce stricter biosecurity measures and our intention now is to lift this from 28 February. Current rules on housing still remain in place until then, but we are setting out plans now to give people time to prepare. We will keep this decision under review.

H5N8 continues to circulate in wild birds and poultry keepers must remain vigilant.

This proposal does not mean a return to business as usual and we will continue to do everything we can to reduce the risk from this disease.
