Caledonia Timber: Local Roots, Quality Timber and Trak-Met Sawmill Machinery Based at Lilliesleaf in the Scottish Borders, Caledonia Timber is a proudly local timber business with strong connections to the farming, forestry and rural communities across the Borders and North of England. Our roots are firmly in the local area, and we understand the importance of making the most of the timber resources available on farms, estates and forestry holdings. What started with a passion for timber and traditional craftsmanship has developed into a busy working sawmill, timber construction business and, more recently, the UK agents for Trak-Met sawmill machinery. At Lilliesleaf, our sawmill specialises in Larch and Douglas Fir, producing high-quality cladding, including charred cladding, as well as Douglas Fir beams for house building and construction. Through Caledonia Log Homes, we also produce handcrafted log buildings, alongside Douglas Fir and Oak timber framing. Our decision to represent Trak-Met is closely linked to our own experience of using their machinery. The saws operating in our yard are Trak-Met machines, so we know first-hand how they perform in a busy working sawmill. There is also a good story behind the Trak-Met business. Founded in Poland in 1997 by Zbigniew Skillandat, the company grew from a sawmill operator looking for better machinery for his own business. Unable to find the type of equipment he wanted at a suitable price, he began designing and building his own sawmill machinery. What started as a practical solution for his own sawmill developed into a manufacturing business supplying customers well beyond Poland. That practical, problem-solving approach is something we recognise at Caledonia Timber. Trak-Met has built its reputation on solid construction, excellent engineering, ease of use and reliability, while remaining competitively priced. These are particularly important qualities when machinery is being used in a working rural environment.
Our Lilliesleaf yard is also a genuine working show yard. Customers can visit and see the Trak-Met equipment operating in real sawmilling conditions, rather than simply looking at a machine in a showroom. We can demonstrate the machinery, discuss different applications and, importantly, share our own experience of using it. We see particular opportunities for the Trak-Met 600 models among farms and estates. For those with their own timber resource, these machines provide a practical way to convert logs into fencing, boards and other useful timber for agricultural and estate projects. Being able to process timber on the farm or estate can make better use of a valuable local resource while reducing the need to move timber elsewhere for processing. This fits closely with our own philosophy at Caledonia Timber: making the most of locally available timber and adding value through good machinery, skilled workmanship and practical knowledge. Our local connections remain at the heart of the business. We know the farming and forestry community across the Scottish Borders and North of England, and we understand the importance of dealing with people who appreciate the realities of working with timber in a rural environment. While our sawmill remains firmly rooted at Lilliesleaf, becoming the UK agents for Trak-Met allows us to take that hands-on experience further afield. Customers from across the UK can come to our yard, see the machinery working and speak to people who actually use it themselves. For us, it is about more than selling sawmill machinery. It is about supporting the rural community, making better use of our timber resources and building long-term relationships with customers. What an amazing time I have had recently. The Border Union Show was a great two days especially when the Kelso Pipe Band serenaded me with some stirring tunes. On Sunday I pulled the rearing shed for the last time, so it can be washed thoroughly, then dismantled by the buyer and transported to Wales. On Monday I accepted the invitation from an anonymous writer (see right) and successfully pulled a cylindrical block from the River Till. I called him Lord Anon as he wrote with such eloquence. I imagine that he must be ennobled but he never gave a name.

Dear Wendy You looked wonderful at the weekend. All clean and smart and spruce – you really do scrub up well for a lady of your age… When you were a Young Thing – I suppose in the 1950s or thereabouts – you and your brothers, sisters, cousins and all will have spent many an hour working hard at clearing things up following the end of World War 2. There were bomb sites to clear, buildings to demolish, and – on a more positive note – land to be drained so that the nation could grow food for everyone. I think the latter was called ‘Dig For Britain’. People like you were vital and you had no end of work. We remain very grateful. Most of your relations have long departed this world, Wendy, and you are one of the very few left who can speak to us about your early days. So I am writing to invite you to take a bit of a trip down Memory Lane. Down here at Ford & Etal, at the start of the year, we were faced with the closure of Ford Bridge for three long months for bridge work and resurfacing. Before those nice boys and girls from Northumberland County Council closed everything off, however, a resident of Crookham drew our attention to a large cylindrical block of concrete lying at one end of the bridge. It was, we were told, a relic from Word War 2. Various stories are told about how this area was used for civil defence training exercises. Very close to Ford Bridge, for example, there is a pill-box in which observers could be trained to observe before they were deployed on campaigns elsewhere – perhaps after the D-Day landings. ‘He’ has probably driven past this pill-box a hundred times without noticing it. When we removed the cylindrical block for safekeeping, another resident informed us that there was another one lying in the river downstream of the bridge, and two more in fields close by. We’ve been to look at the one in the river, and we would be very pleased to invite you to come and help us retrieve it from the riverbed and up a rather steep bank. We’re pretty sure that this will stir old memories but at the same time be a bit a ‘walk in the park’ for you. We hope to bring all four of these cylinders together again in one place. They probably weigh just over a tonne each. We believe that they were intended as traffic blocks, either to prevent the Panzer Divisions of the Wehrmacht from crossing the River Till at Ford Bridge (surely the crucial route in all German masterplans) or as resources for young trainees (perhaps under observation from the trainee observers in the pill-box) to be instructed in the dark arts of how to seal off a bridge to traffic. I chatted to ‘Him’ at the Show about coming down this week whilst the water levels are so low. However, today we inspected the job more closely and have concluded that it will be better for you to gain access to the riverbank from the opposite bank, through a field of wheat that is still uncut. Can I therefore extend an invitation to you to come and visit us once the wheat has been combined – perhaps in two/three weeks’ time? Even if the river rises a bit, we have good and direct access to the block from the field above. I can send you some pictures. We’d be delighted if you would accept. Bring ‘Him’ too, because he seemed to be rather excited. With best wishes

August 10th 2026 Tom Pate farms 240ha of arable on a tenanted farm in Angus. Cropping includes wheat, spring barley, rye and oilseed rape along with land let for potatoes and vining peas. Additionally, around 6500 pigs are reared annually under contract and 600 Christmas turkeys sold directly to the public under the KellyBronze franchise. On his wife’s 380ha family farm in the Angus Glens they also run 200 red deer hinds plus followers for venison production, along with developing a forestry enterprise. The “Weeds Act 1959” probably isn’t something we give too much thought about these days. This is the legislation brought in to deal with “injurious native weeds”, namely common ragwort, spear thistle, field thistle, curled dock and broad-leaved dock. Having spent a huge amount of time and effort trying to control ragwort in the past couple of months I am now slightly obsessed and am seeing ragwort everywhere. If spotted on the farm I am quick to stop whatever is happening and either pull it out or apply a healthy dollop of the appropriate chemical (as per the label of course!). Over the past few years, I am seeing more and more ragwort in the countryside. Its bright yellow flowers make it easily spotted and roadsides, central reservations, public spaces, woodland and fields are now pock-marked. Like wild oats it is an annual battle to cover the ground and stop the seeds setting and causing future grief. Non-native invasive species (e.g. giant hogweed) are covered in the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and is a piece of legislation designed to completely control the spread of these foreign interlopers. It would be an offence to plant or allow these plants to grow in the wild. From my forefathers I understood ragwort was Mzuri Rezult straw rake being used to create the same and its mere presence was notifiable. On Our Farm

Hugo Lee farms in partnership with his father, Guy, at Sandystones, near St Boswells. Arable crops of wheat, oilseed rape, malting barley and oats are grown, 500 Angus cattle are finished annually, 8000 organic hens produce eggs for Waitrose and 8,000 organic point of lay pullets are reared each year. Harvest report to date, terrible start, slowly improving and lots to learn from it! We kicked off here on the 15th of July cutting the BYDV infected winter barley at Ancrum which has looked awful all year and this was reflected in the yield, 5.5t/ha. The barley at Sandystones was better at 7.43t/ha due to significantly less BYDV. Unfortunately, it all got rejected for malt as the screenings were in the high thirties. The winter barley was Buccaneer which really suffered during the cold snap in May when awns were just starting to emerge. Fortunately, we can keep it for cattle feed however I am seriously considering no longer growing malting winter barley in the future as I just can’t make the figures stack up. Our high erucic oilseed rape averaged 3.75t/ha, I was hoping for around the 4t/ha as the crop had looked great all year. It did have a little club root but nothing of any significance. Variety and rotation are the limiting factors Harvest has been a mixed bag so far... and the reason we are not averaging 5t/ha which conventional growers have achieved for two consecutive years in the Borders. Demand for high erucic rape seems to have fallen away reflected in the very low premium being paid for 2027 harvest. We will probably switch back to conventional oilseed rape for harvest 2028. Winter wheat was cut last week with second wheats 8.5t/ha and first wheats 10.5t/ha. I was hoping that our first wheats would do over 11t/ha like last year but BYDV damage and the heat wave in early July put a stop to that. Despite a lovely bold sample it is not weighing as well with kg/hl in the high 70’s compared to the low 80’s of last year. We have just started spring barely harvest with yields ranging from 6-7.5t/ ha depending on soil type. Thankfully the little bit of rain we had last week got grass growing again and we have stopped supplementary feeding on the rented parkland for the time being. Fortunately, most of the cattle are on silage leys which have come back surprisingly well after second cut. The whole crop peas and barely was Wholecrop peas and barley a success yielding 20t/ha with a fantastic take of grass underneath. Due to the season and timings, we have had to use three different Agrimart contractors to make silage this year. They have all done an excellent job and a huge thank you for fitting us into their very busy schedules! The St Boswells and Border Union shows were a great success once again helped by the lovely weather. Despite a slow start on Saturday at the Border Union I have never seen the showground so busy at 7pm. It felt like every famer in the Borders had decided to take the afternoon off and enjoy a drink with friends which was fantastic. I better go as its Tilly’s my eldest daughters 12th birthday today and we are having a big birthday breakfast before we start combining!

Simon Bainbridge farms in partnership with his wife Claire and his mother Elisabeth in Northumberland. They run suckler beef, sheep and laying hen enterprises across 650 ha of mainly SDA and moorland organically. The wholecrop is in, pitted and sheeted, with its smart new roof. The crop averaged 7t/ acre which is great. The muck store is taking shape, but the council are still playing havoc with one of the conditions linked to the BNG. They are excited by something that wouldn’t need to be done if we applied for planning today. It is absolutely barking. Planning has gone in for another general-purpose building and then that’s the end of all the building projects… I think!? We’re planning on concreting the yard at Donkin Rigg shortly, so it will definitely start raining soon. Lambs are spaned and we have had the first draw of fat lambs away, as well as some cull ewes and also some cull cows to Hexham. We vaccinated the ewes last year for BTV and have ordered the vaccine for the ewe lambs and gimmers to be done next week. It is definitely heading north, which is depressing, disappointing and also hideous for those who have been caught. We are thinking of all those farms and farming families affected. We have put 16kw of solar panels on one of the buildings at Donkin Rigg. It is a real joy to see that we don’t use any electric in the day now. It will be a slightly different story in the winter months, but a real positive step forwards on reducing our energy consumption. Last weekend was the Simonside Country Fair, which was a great day out. We had success all round with Davy turning out some brilliant sheep and coming home with an armful of rosettes and a trophy. Also Chief the Border Terrier finished first in the class that had ‘Failed to win an Award’ - a win’s a win! We drove to South East France for our family summer holiday. Approximately 2,600 miles in ten days and the naturally greenest part of our journey was from home to Belsay. Locally, we have been very fortunate this summer with a bit of rain when needed and dry spells when we needed to get on. Driving through England and France there is very little green in the fields that have not been irrigated. Animals turned out onto hard baked fields being fed winter rations is not a good thing to see. The scale of the arable operations on the North East of France is immense. They are producing food as far as you can see with the landscape balanced with large swathes of forestry. Amazing to see, but challenging to manage in these temperatures. We passed several scorched sections and had one emergency alert on our phone to evacuate an area that we were driving past. The challenge is the wildfires had started to create their own weather patterns, creating lightning storms, which had the potential to set more fires away. It was a bit disconcerting to sit down to a meal one evening and have small specks of ash fall from the sky. On a personal level I am currently struggling with a classic first world, middle age problem. Whilst away I slipped by the pool and have injured both my knee and ankle. I’m now a tad grumpy as I can’t get out on my bike, which is typical as all the jobs are done and the weather is perfect for it. 42

August 10th 2026 Will Howe is an arable farmer from Sleaford, Lincolnshire. The soils are predominantly heavy. There is 1000ha of cropping including winter wheat, spring beans, spring oats and oilseed rape. He also manages a contracting business Thorpe Farming Ltd. Well, what can I tell you? Harvest was all but over on the 31st July. The combine turned on the lights twice all season, and that was only just to finish a block so we could move early the next morning. Yields have been surprisingly reasonable, when taken in the context of the season and bear in mind we have trees shedding leaves and some even dying here now. High specific weights have been our saviour, but there will no doubt be the obligatory penalty at the mill for screenings as the tips of the wheat just wouldn’t thresh out as the grain was so pinched. On one contract farm I had a terrible problem with “skinning” the spring barley. Having never experienced this before I phoned a friend 190 acres of spring oats in a day… who said it was both mechanical and seasonal problem this year. Upon further investigation it became apparent that there had been a secondary germination of barley, not secondary tillers, which had not matured properly evidenced by the fact the awns and ears were still vertical. The grains were like bullets and it was only when I hand rubbed an ear, the skin fell off the barley in my hands… We are now in the midst of landwork. Normally our busiest time but we are limiting the work to 12hr days, 6 days a week as we are not under any undue pressure. Ideally we would wait for some rain but without any we just have to get on. The quadtrac is pulling the SLD at 8” deep and the challenger is following with the cultipress. The tractors have a combined age of 27, the cultivators 37 which always brings a smile to my face. The aim is to leave a weather proof finish which will readily absorb any rain, Cereal Harvest 2026 done on 31st July as an untouched stubble on this land would not. Once the rain has fallen the choice of crop will be decided. The moisture deficit is making it look unlikely that any OSR will be planted, but we still have a 4 week window if I don’t mind nursing small plants through the winter. As ever, tendering for FBT’s would appear to be a waste of time and energy. It is a bit like playing Euro-Millions. You know there is no chance of you winning but you buy a ticket anyway, you then spend the next few days planning on how to spend the £100 million you just won, and then then as the draw is made you realise you have nothing to show for the £2.50 entry fee. It does call into question where we are headed as a business, but there is no point “buying” work. It is a shame that not one but 2 boundary neighbours have decided to call time on their farming careers, and on both occasions I have not been successful in the tender process. I am fairly diligent in my costings, and pragmatic on the required margin to make the risk worthwhile, which makes some of the FBT values being mentioned all the more baffling. But who needs to worry about such trivial things when you have cattle arriving in 4 weeks, with no grass, no fences, and no winter feed sown yet. Out of the frying pan into the fire! 46

There was an eye-catching article in the most recent issue of Farmers Weekly with a table showing the fragile financial state of many of the UK grain buyers. The financial performance shown was net profit on turnover with Simpsons Malt, who are large buyers in this part of the world, having the best result at 3.6%. 23 businesses were analysed, nearly all were down on the previous year and three made a loss. We all need to be aware of the financial strength of the businesses we trade with. All too often farmers moan about the profit buyers are making, especially retailers, and I appreciate there are many cases where suppliers are treated unfairly but I have always felt that we are all much better off trading with profitable businesses rather than ones which are struggling. Years ago, I had a part time job working for Waitrose helping the meat buying team with the schemes Guy Lee they were setting up with groups of producers. The head of Meat, Poultry, Fish and Dairy was Richard Sadler who had incredible vision for the opportunities available for all parts of the supply chain in producing dedicated products such as Angus beef, Welsh Lamb, British Blacktail eggs, specially selected milk etc. That was 30 years ago. Since then all retailers have realised the strength of these arrangements and have set up their own producer groups. I remember well when Richard went to address a group of sceptical Welsh Lamb producers, he explained the benefits of working together and direct supply to a single buyer. Richard replied ‘Tell me your costs of production, I will pay that plus a good margin’ There was deathly silence until another voice shouted out ‘You supermarkets are all the same stealing from us’. They all knew what they didn’t want but none had any idea of how much they needed. This is what makes primary producers such weak sellers. Another attribute of farmers is their allergy to paying tax. I have always believed in the idiom – There is only one thing worse than paying tax and that is not paying tax. No one can enjoy paying tax, however it is a necessary evil of a profitable business. The tax benefits of buying capital assets particularly machinery are well known but in many cases farmers will spend £100 to save somewhere between £25 and £40 depending on tax rates which is fine in a run of good years but can burden the business with overburdensome financial commitments such as leasing and hp payments. Enough of the serious stuff and me straying into areas I am not qualified or knowledgeable enough to write about. Jack Frater is an Agricultural Consultant at Edwin Thompson, based between their offices in Berwick and Galashiels. Jack specialising in Farm and Estate Management. Over the last few years we have undertaken a large number of farm business reviews, a part of my job that I really enjoyed as it’s a chance to help implement some real improvements to a business. Just about every farmer I have done this for can tell me exactly what their lambs, cattle or wheat sold for, but ask the same question about their cost of production and often the conversation often becomes a little less certain. The starting point for such reviews is a simple accounts analysis, the general rule of thumb being that variable costs should be no more than 35% of the farms turnover. If this is any higher my initial thoughts are that the business is either not generating as much income as it should, or more often than not the variable costs are too high, caused by a number of possible underlying issues. Such issues range from business to business, and very much depend on the type of farm, but include such things as deficiencies in grassland that result in the business buying mineral blocks, a worm burden or low pH levels meaning fertiliser is not efficient. On a side note (and apologies in advance to all feed reps reading this) but for every tonne of mineral blocks you buy you are paying well over £100 for the plastic tubs. Year-end accounts are useful in their own right, but it is important to remember that they are for tax purposes rather than as management accounts and, particularly for mixed farms, do not show a true reflection of the business. Take for example a mixed sheep, beef and cereal farm producing their own feed barley and straw. The barley and straw should effectively be bought at market value by the beef enterprise from the arable enterprise and should be shown as such in any management accounts. This will give a more accurate view of how your enterprises are performing, and possibly more importantly identify if one enterprise has been subsidising another. As we start to look ahead at the 2027 harvest year, we have seen an almost 45% increase in the cost if nitrogen fertiliser compared to this time last year, but only a 4% increase in cereal values per tonne. Oilseed rape looks set to have the best gross margin with both hybrid and conventional OSR likely to outperform group 1s and soft wheats as long as yields are hitting 4t/ha. There is never a bad time to undertake a whole farm business review, especially for those businesses in England where BPS has been masking inefficiencies and still allowing a bottom line profit. For those north of the border funding is available through the Farm Advisory Service to cover some of the cost of such a review.
