Wendy writes
PHOTOGRAPHED IN ACTION Over the years I have become used to constantly being in the public eye! Cameras and photographers are part of everyday life and something I have become accustomed to. Therefore it was of no surprise when my old mate Tom Douglas appeared, iPhone in hand, snapping away as I set about to pull the hen shed at Over Langshaw.
There are two hen houses on the farm and neither of them are the easiest for me to manoeuvre myself into a position where I can pull them straight. One I pulled a few months ago, I have to navigate between trees with constant shuffling back and forth. The other is on a slope near the road, with fence posts and farm tracks to negotiate. There is little soft ground I can find where my spades can secure a good grip. Tom’s photographs capture perfectly the skill and strength needed to move these buildings. With my rear wheels off the ground and the spades well in, preventing me moving back, the cable is being wound in and the house is on its way. As I age the number of hen houses on my books have been in constant decline. I am now left with five customers and 16 houses. In the peak, ten years ago, I was pulling over 40 sheds a year. I am not complaining. I have had a good life and less strenuous work gives me more time to relax and contemplate my contribution to keeping the nation fed.

Talking......Organic
October 7th 2026
Simon Bainbridge farms in partnership with his wife Claire and his mother Elisabeth in Northumberland. They run suckler beef, sheep and laying hen enterprises across 650 ha of mainly SDA and moorland - organically. The seasons are definitely on the change, slightly colder, wind picking up and the rain arriving. Having said that, it’s hard to know what the day is going to bring as one morning last week it was 2 degrees, the next day 14. Grass is still growing, but the quality is slipping. We’ve brought in the finishing cattle, dosing and clipping before housing. Calves have received their 2nd Rispoval vaccination and a wormer but will stay out as long as possible, as will the cows, as long as the ground and grass holds up. The concreting continues. We know we were fortunate to get some of the yard renewal in our Countryside Stewardship Higher Tier agreement, with the Catchment Sensitive Farming and Environment Agency approving the works. As time is running out on our claim window it’s go, go, go as it needs to be completed before the end of the year. We’re definitely stretching the cash flow, as the grant only covers some of the cost, but we’re conscious that this support money is not going to come around again. We’ve added to our concrete bill, by laying concrete under the cantilever of the new muck store as we will be storing a good proportion of our straw under there. As we increase our cattle numbers and reduce our sheep numbers we’re attempting to have a swap round of sheds. All the cattle will now be housed at two of the steadings and where possible we’ll bring sheep in on the other steading. We’ve freed up another building, as it no longer needs to hold straw as the cantilever is providing free storage. This will reduce the running around between the steadings, as feeding and bedding cattle will just happen at two sites. We will also no longer have FYM at the steading with no muck storage. Last but not the least it will enable us to rest a bit more ground during those cold, non-growing months by bringing some of the sheep in. I should just apply a small caveat - this is a working plan and we might have all the pieces of this moving jigsaw complete by turn out! New hens are arriving next week. The shed is washed and disinfected and almost good to go. It’s a week of repairs, mainly to the muck belts, as the tracking is out on the top belts. There’s a treatment of fossil shield to be applied to the whole shed later this week to protect against red mite. There’s also a wee bit of electric fence renewal to be done, water systems to flush and then the usual final preparations. It’s always a little nerve racking the week before they arrive to get everything sorted. I’ve not managed to keep up with the news these last few weeks but saw a headline telling me that the Conservatives would do away with DEFRA and the Environment Agency if they were back in power. On Our Farm
October 7th 2026
Hugo Lee farms in partnership with his father, Guy, at Sandystones, near St Boswells. Arable crops of wheat, oilseed rape, malting barley and oats are grown, 500 Angus cattle are finished annually, 7500 organic hens produce eggs for Waitrose and 32000 free range organic for the Lakes. The hens are in and we got our first egg on Friday. Last month I thought that we would never be ready in time for the birds. Incredibly all that is left to do is finish laying the concrete yard and top off the access road. Then we will be able to focus on ensuring the birds lay as many eggs as possible. The shed is stocked with Deklab white hens and the eggs are destined for McDonalds to go into their breakfast McMuffins. White birds are completely new to us as we have always worked with brown birds historically. I am really enjoying learning how to manage these new birds who seem to have settled in well so far. White birds are a lot flightier than browns so birds are caught at night and housed in the early morning. We started stocking the shed at 3am and the last lorry was away by 10:30am. A big thank you to everyone who helped and especially my wife Jess who unloaded the first two lorries before heading off to work as a teacher for the New entrance finally complete day. Hopefully she did not smell too badly of chickens! By the end of next week, we should be producing enough eggs to get the robot up and running. The robot/packer has been a big investment, and I am very excited to see it finally working. I hope that this large outlay will pay off in the long run as it should greatly reduce our labour requirement. All winter cereals are now in and everything is rowed up except second wheats which were drilled last week. Having been worried about my oilseed rape getting away from flea beetle I am now concerned it is getting too big. There really is no pleasing farmers! Moisture conservation has been key to getting crops established this autumn. Anything that was drilled behind the sumo has shot out of the ground and never looked back. Crops that were ploughed and not drilled immediately have struggled especially in any heavy areas. Thankfully the bare patches are starting to fill in now as I couldn’t face looking at the fields any longer. Ploughing second wheat ground The predicted El Niño monsoon still hasn’t arrived, and we are exceptionally dry here for this time of year. I don’t know how we would have got everything done if we’d had a wet summer/autumn like those on the West. Cattle will be brought in over the next few weeks as grass growth really slows down. We have just moved, washed and restocked one of our mobile sheds. All fields are now cleared of straw. By the end of the month, we should be on top of things - I hope…

‘It’s my money sitting in my account and I want it in cash now’. I have heard of so many customers being given a hard time by bank staff who refuse to hand over cash despite proof of verification with passports and driving licence. The bank want to know why you want Guy Lee it, what you are going to spend it on, and give every reason why they should not hand over your own hard earned cash.
I had a similar experience last week; on Tuesday we transferred a large sum in payment for the 32,000 point of lay pullets in our new hen house. Although we are restricted to how much we can pay out in any one day we can override this with four ‘one-off payments’ in a month. I used this facility to pay for the pullets, the next day which was the end of the month we had to pay Corporation tax as well as the end of the month invoices. As hard as I tried, I could not use the one-off payment facility again. I wrote a cheque to HMRC but had no paperwork to pay that in with, the very nice teller tried every way to pay the cheque in but the computer kept on saying NO! They only way they want you to pay is online now and that is where you meet the brick wall. In the end I had to make a CHAPS payment in the branch - we are lucky to have RBS in Kelso, next door the Bank of Scotland doors are firmly closed forever. The process of doing the payment with a member of the bank staff took over half an hour despite the fact I was handing money over to the Government the questions I was asked to verify the Inland Revenue as a real and genuine organisation were extensive!
Now I have just heard of a consultation from Scottish Government wanting responsible persons in a farming business to be doing CPD (Continuing Professional Development) to allow receipt of farm support payments. The vast majority of farmers are already carrying this out through Farm Assurance which audits both the person and the place and deems them/it meeting exacting standards for food production. I think I can safely say that farmers in Scotland have no envy for their fellow producers in England. They have faced very challenging growing conditions with heat and drought through the Summer and now the debacle of the SFI scheme opening and then closing within six hours as it was oversubscribed and the budget had been blown. In comparison we are grateful for the relatively simple system we have for claiming and receiving universal support.

Talking......North of the Forth
October 5th 2026 Tom Pate farms 240ha of arable on a tenanted farm in Angus. Cropping includes wheat, spring barley, rye and oilseed rape along with land let for potatoes and vining peas. Additionally, around 6500 pigs are reared annually under contract and 600 Christmas turkeys sold directly to the public under the KellyBronze franchise. On his wife’s 380ha family farm in the Angus Glens they also run 200 red deer hinds plus followers for venison production, along with developing a forestry enterprise. The deer farm has a beautiful stretch of the River Isla running through it. The river forms in the southern Grampians on the Angus/Aberdeenshire border, flows down Glenisla into the vale of Strathmore and then joins the mighty Tay near Meikleour. Our wee stretch is above the impressive Reekie Linn waterfall which is too tall for the famous Tay salmon to navigate. However, plenty of small trout dart around the crystal-clear waters. It can turn from picturesque to dramatically powerful in a short time if rains higher up cause a spate. The thunderous power of the river, especially over the Reekie Linn is a terrifying spectacle. To cross the River there is an old Bailey Bridge. We aren’t sure when the bridge was erected but suspect sometime in the 1950s. Alongside the Bailey Bridge is the remnants of a smaller pedestrian suspension bridge which would have linked the farm to the nearby school and church probably in the early 1900’s until the Bailey Bridge replaced it. This type of bridge was named after its designer, Donald Bailey, who in 1940 answered the call from military engineering units for a modular, prefabricated bridge that could be built quickly, by hand, without specialist heavy machinery. This invention went on to prove crucial in helping allied forces especially in North Africa, Sicily, Italy and ultimately in northwest Europe as Germans blew permanent bridges in their retreat. Our bridge is really only for farm traffic and moving livestock from one side to the other. Over the past few years, the deck has become increasingly rotten. Patching has only done so much and crossing increasingly required a small dose of courage as the river could be seen rushing below your feet. The decision was made to redeck the bridge. Fortunately for us the skilled and capable agricultural engineers at CS Tractors were willing to take up the challenge and good quality larch was sourced locally from Burty’s Timber at Eassie. Due to the brilliantly simple yet robust design of Bailey bridges it only took three men two and a half days to strip and redeck the bridge (fortunately not under enemy fire). The steel frame is in remarkably good order perhaps demonstrating the quality of certain steel from this period. The deck consists of a double layer of planks. The first is laid parallel across with the second laid at a diagonal. Both layers are held in place by larger timbers running down the side that are bolted through to the main frame thus sandwiching all layers together. No nails, no fancy fittings just good design. No wonder the Bailey Bridge was so important in World War Two. Whether our bridge saw action in the war is unknown, but it has certainly stood the test of time in our peaceful corner of Angus. Hopefully with the new deck it can stand for another seventy-five years.
Before - A rotten deck and remnants of previous floods. Time for a refurb.

Talking......from Lincolnshire
October 5th 2026 Will Howe is an arable farmer from Sleaford, Lincolnshire. The soils are predominantly heavy. There is 1000ha of cropping including winter wheat, spring beans, spring oats and oilseed rape. He also manages a contracting business Thorpe Farming Ltd. If you have had a bad month farming, don’t worry, mine has been worse. Quite where to start. There are differing levels of dry: Martini, Chardonnay, and Gandhis flip flop. The land is very much like the later. The oilseed rape which looked so promising is now going backwards quicker than a French Army. We have already lost 30% at home, and 100% on a customer’s farm. Randomly the silt at East Heckington which normally attracts every pest and disease has not a single hole in any leaves and looks a picture. The bearings on the packer have given out for the third time on the SLD. Having replaced every single component early in the season I am frustrated beyond belief. My suspicion is the nongenuine parts I put on are not fit for purpose and are causing the issues. It will be redone with entirely new genuine parts over the winter which will hopefully cure it. This was followed in the same field by the transmission failing in the quadtrac, (a known issue at 7000hrs, not at 4300hrs) and it is now at the dealers yard minus a cab with gears all over the workshop floor. The repair bill will be over £30k which is horrific, but compared to finance on a new machine keeps the costs sensible. On his last visit to the farm, the patriarch of this publication questioned why I like to have 2 of most things to which I responded, “self insuring”. Thank God I do because one hour later the challenger was settling into her stride and no real time was lost. Flea Beetle in a desert The much anticipated arrival of the cattle has been, and they have gone. What a disaster. They arrived smelling like cattle which had been pushed too hard, with the obligatory coughing and wheezing you would expect from smoking 60 woodbines a day. To be fair to the rearer he had got the weight on them impressively well. They were weighed on arrival, and given a vaccination for clostridial disease. Then the bit we dread, releasing them into the electric fenced field knowing the next fence to the West is in Nottinghamshire, and to the East is in the Netherlands. Like anything with Stockholm syndrome, they were a delight to handle, and ever so calm in the pen. Then we opened the gate. That was the first mistake. I had people positioned around the outside and had put posts in every 2m to create a “visual” barrier. Challenger to the rescue! To no avail. 20 minutes later they were back in the corral ready to be released again. I made a far smaller section of field and allowed them out 5 at a time. This did the trick with them learning pretty quickly about the perils of trying to chew or sniff the fence. The following day they were fed and an utter delight. On day 3 Vicky and I went to feed them at 10 am and it was utterly glorious. I had a rickety old trailer on the truck which crashed and banged, the calves got their tails up and set off towards the fence as a single group, “Oh bugger” I thought but they applied the brakes as if they were coming into Turn 1 at Monza and stopped a metre short. The sense of relief was phenomenal, they were trained….. At 11:30am I got a call from a kindly neighbour saying that there were 20 cows in the field next to her. So cultivations were called off, Vicky and another neighbour came to help and we got them back in across the road, into the corral and back into the field. This was ok, I spent the rest of the day banging in more posts and putting another wire round the field. That will stop them….. In dreams the low moo of cattle is very soporific, so at 2:15am the following morning dreaming about all things bovine I heard a moo, very relaxing. Then Vicky heard a moo, not so relaxing. Then we heard the “clip-clop” of hooves on the patio, blind panic. I had visions of my cattle making their way towards the Urals…. So, with huge thanks to Colby, Vicky and Freddie, we located 35 outside our garden and Vicky and Freddie babysat them whilst Colby and I went to see what had happened and fix fences. I still don’t know what caused them to flee but they broke through the back fence and the perimeter fence, bending two metal posts Quality Steel through 90 degrees as they went. Some turned left, some turned Framed Buildings right, and some went straight on. We had cattle everywhere. In Providing the complete the end 6 people and three quad bikes took a combined 54hrs package for all steel framed across a 4km radius to find and round up the 77 cattle. building requirements We settled down to our first meal of the day at 3pm and did some blue sky thinking. October 5th 2026 Ian Mackenzie is an arable and dairy farmer from the Canterbury Plain in the South Island of New Zealand. He runs a number of fully irrigated intensive cropping farms, producing grain, vegetable and grass seeds with some stock finishing. We have just been paid our final payments for milk production from last season. It was a good year. We produced 172,000 kgs of milk solids… a wee bit over 2 million litres of milk… and we’ve been paid $9.66/kg. We got bonuses of another 14c/ kg for meeting high milk quality standards (low SCC amongst other things) and various environmental measures. We supply Fonterra which is our farmer owned cooperative. We have to have at least 25% of our production in shares, but we hold 1 share for every kg of ms we produce, which was the old standard. These shares have a trading value today of $4.70/share. Lining up for sausages This year Fonterra divested its consumer brands businesses in a significant restructure. The reasoning was that the consumer brands part of the business had the lowest gross margins and required the highest capital investments… so a double whammy of low returns and high re-investment costs. The intention is to concentrate on the manufacturing of food ingredients. We were paid a special dividend of $2.16/share earlier in the year as our share of this divestment. Fonterra said they thought it would take a couple of years to make up the earnings reduction from the sale of the consumer brands but now say they have in fact bridged that gap already. That suggests to me that the divestment strategy was sound and reflects sound governance which is unfortunately relatively Heading out to sea rare amongst our farmer owned cooperatives. This has enabled Fonterra to pay us another $0.57/share as an ordinary dividend for the year on top of the milk payout. This sits alongside retaining around $1.5b for re-investment in new food ingredients technology to meet market requirements for innovative products. Confidence in the dairy industry and Fonterra in particular is very high as a result of all this… not to mention the obvious, that large well established dairy operations are awash with cash. As a result land prices for dairy farms and land suited for conversion to dairy have gone through the roof. Farms are now selling for $80-90k/ha, up from $50-60k/ha this time last year. We have a general election in a few JOHN MANNERS LTD weeks and the polls are suggesting Shot Blasting, Paint Spraying, that a coalition of lunatic left-wing Sheet Metal Work, extremists could win. If that happens Alloy Welding confidence could evaporate overnight. We live in exciting times. Enquires Richard Youngest granddaughter turns 6
