AVOIDING THE FLU
January 2026
From a cold and draughty shed I wish you all a Happy New Year, which I hope was more eventful than mine. I have not had a human visit me since he left for Africa over six weeks ago. I have been frozen to the core, my batteries are run down and I am certainly not going to start for him when he deigns to visit me. Very sadly one of my most loyal customers has gone down with bird flu. Despite my insatiable desire to help him out in his hour of need I was not allowed to drive Happy New Year from a the 40 miles to his farm draughty shed! to move his sheds so they could be disinfected and return to production. They said I was at risk of transmitting the disease to birds on this farm, which I have to admit is something I would hate to be blamed for. I could end up on the scrapheap of redundant machines, a fate I avoid at any cost. It looks like my life is winding down just as his is. I still enjoy a day out with a shed to pull on a local farm, I have a booking for February 16th, a shed on this farm in March and a hope for one near Galashiels. That is a pretty empty diary for one whose life used to be so busy. My biggest fear is seizing up.

January 14th 2026 Simon Bainbridge farms in partnership with his wife Claire and his mother Elisabeth in Northumberland. They run suckler beef, sheep and laying hen enterprises across 650 ha of mainly SDA and moorland - organically. Slowly the days are drawing out a little. It makes such a difference to see a bit more light in the day, for doing jobs and our wellbeing. That being said, we’ve then spent a bit of time working in the dark preparing for the hens going. At depopulation time, it’s much calmer to prepare the shed at night once the hens are asleep, so the headtorches have been on the red light setting. The catching team work in the dark, but prior to their arrival we need to remove anything that is going to get in their way. Now the hens are gone it’s into the usual clean down routine. You would think it would be easier without the hens, but turning the shed around and preparing it for the next flock definitely puts the pressure on. We are getting ready for our spring grazing turnout and lambing. We have brought it forward a touch, but knowing our luck it will be a late spring! (That’s the ‘doom’ setting on the crystal ball at play). We have just sold some of our hoggs into the store for a good price, which means we can now concentrate on resting the ground for the ewes and the next crop of lambs. Ideally stock would all go to the moon from 2nd January for 3 months and on their return, there will be grass. There is still no progress on the muck store. Northumberland planning is a shambles, as they make everything so complicated and expensive. It literally is ‘No’ or ‘Redo’ all the way. Planning costs are astronomical. I wonder whether they start their financial year with a target of how many planning fees they need to bring in, which means they need to refuse planning to get more fees in? Maybe they should turn the principle around, so it’s a reduced planning fee if they refuse it? To be fair, that could also be interpreted as paying more for approval, but it really is frustrating that they can’t pass a simple muck store. The Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) system and rules don’t fit a farming profile. We are also proposing to build a sheep shed next year, but the thought of trying to talk to the planning team for another project just makes you want to scream. It really shouldn’t be this difficult. There’s been a handy gap in bookings for the holiday cottage this January, so we blocked two weeks out and tiled the kitchen and bathroom floors as the previous flooring wasn’t looking as good as it should be. We have also given it a spring clean and lick of paint etc. There are a few bookings for this year, but last year ended up being a very successful year, with the majority of booking made only a couple of months in advance. Hopefully we will have a good year this year too. It is very welcome that the government has changed the threshold All types of Agricultural Fencing, Garden Fencing and Decking on the IHT changes for APR and BPR. It has helped many, however not the single, unmarried or widowed businesspeople, nor the elderly A & E Brown, Byrewalls, Gordon, Berwickshire TD3 6JU and those who are sadly very poorly. The endless conveyor belt of inspections and audits continues apace. I have just had a Soil Association inspection, today is a BEIC self-audit by our egg packer and next week I have my QMS/SQC inspection. As I have mentioned previously farm audits and inspections take up 15-20% of my time. It is extremely frustrating when I see imported food in our supermarkets from countries which don’t have to meet any of our food and welfare standards. All we want as farmers is a level playing field! Bird Flu is getting closer with four cases in Penicuik over the last few weeks. As we embark on our biggest new venture ever at Sandystones I hope for everyones sake they manage to contain it. It is very hard to predict what will happen in 2026 especially with Trump in power. Will there be Windy walk up the Eildon hills regime change in Iran, could the US take Greenland, will China invade Taiwan and could there be peace in Ukraine? These massive geopolitical events could have huge ramifications on our economy, good and bad. Closer to home the world has had its best ever harvest. Cereal prices continue to fall and new crop Spring Barley contracts appear non-existent with stores still full of 2024 and 2025 crop. It does not look good for arable farming. I was speaking to a grain trader who has been in the business for 45 years and he has never seen the malting barley market like this before. Fat cattle prices are also starting to slide due to lack of demand and increase in foreign imports. It is looking like 2026 will be a year to knuckle down, box clever and try to make the best of a bad situation. I will get in trouble from G.S-B for being so negative I can only apologise. Tom Pate farms 240ha of arable on a tenanted farm in Angus. Cropping includes wheat, spring barley, rye and oilseed rape along with land let for potatoes and vining peas. Additionally, around 6500 pigs are reared annually under contract and 600 Christmas turkeys sold directly to the public under the KellyBronze franchise. On his wife’s 380ha family farm in the Angus Glens they also run 200 red deer hinds plus followers for venison production, along with developing a forestry enterprise. 2026 has started with sub-zero temperatures and snowfall. We were on the southern edge of the worst of the snowfall with Montrose and north into Aberdeenshire having more disruptive conditions. Despite the headache of frozen pipes and icy roads, I always feel a good spell of hard frosts is quite good for nature, allowing a seasonal reset. Pests, diseases and weeds can be kept in check, and plants and animals can keep in sync with the seasons (remember them?). Although at time of writing the 10-day cold snap is coming to an end resulting in the inevitable soggy mess as rain falls from above and frosts melt from below. Thankfully the wintery weather came well after our busy Christmas turkey collections and deliveries. I certainly wouldn’t want to be snowed in with 600 oven-ready turkeys! The season went well with all birds being sold and very positive customer feedback. It’s tremendous to get photos, videos and emails from customers who have enjoyed their Turkey shop team 2025 Christmas feasting. It is also encouraging how much people value being able to buy from a local family business. The connection to a product, people and place seems to be very important to a certain section of consumers. The whole family took a much-needed rest after Christmas. 2025 seems to have been a busy year for all of us and a couple of weeks of rest and recuperation was long overdue. However, I am still not quite feeling energetic enough to look ahead to planning for 2026. Budgeting for the year ahead will not be easy with cereal prices still looking poor and costs not abating. Thought will also have to be given to new greening rules going forward. Greening the less productive areas of the farm will be the aim of the game. A new batch of pigs arrived on Christmas Eve afternoon which wasn’t great timing, but we managed. The last batch performed particularly well across all metrics weight gain, mortality, Ring feeder wastage. Although the feed conversion, etc. Hopefully we can repeat deer seem very happy! that again with the new intake. Deer are coping well with the cold conditions but obviously are looking for more silage than normal as the grass is under snow cover and they require a bit more energy. Luckily we have plenty of silage to see them into the spring so no concerns A wintery scene on that front. Wastage of silage at the ring feeders is however annoying, any suggestions in reducing waste gratefully received. Hopefully we will be scanning the hinds this month to see how productive the rut was. Will Howe is an arable farmer from Sleaford, Lincolnshire. The soils are predominantly heavy. There is 1000ha of cropping including winter wheat, spring beans, spring oats and oilseed rape. He also manages a contracting business Thorpe Farming Ltd. Vicky and I have always had the idea we would like to do one “extra special” holiday with the kids. We are now at the stage whereby next year they will be doing A levels and GCSE’s so this Christmas seemed to fit well. Vicky wanted to tour Thailand, I fancied New Zealand and Australia having looked at some of the farms for sale. Unsurprisingly I can’t even remember a discussion, and the tickets to Thailand were booked. What a fabulous place. We left with our backpacks (mine was from when I travelled as an 18 yr old) and got the train to Heathrow. Bangkok just assaulted every single sense in the body. The noise, the lights, the food coupled with being one of the cleanest cities I have ever been to. That said after trips to night markets, long tail boats round the canals and a An incredible tour Muay Thai boxing match the journey to Kanchanaburi was peaceful bliss. The old wooden carriages with the sliding shutters were from another era (as was the 30km/hr speed!). This brought us to Hellfire Pass, a living monument to the POW’s who helped build the Thai-Burma railway. I had a lump in my throat larger than some of the Bangkok ladies as we walked round. It was a truly humbling experience and I would recommend anyone to visit. At the end of the tour we visited “The Rice Café” for lunch where our host explained that the local labour is being undercut by Burmese migrants, that the government restricts the Tranquil beauty farmers to two crops of rice per year, whereas potentially they could grow four, and that the Café was set up as a way of subsidising the farm. This all seemed very familiar... Our travels then took us to Krabi for Christmas where we met a wonderful Kiwi family who have offered a place to stay when the kids start travelling independently, Phi Phi Island which was stunning but far too many people (says the tourist) and finishing with a few days in Christmas Eve with a twist Patong. Having fitted so much into our time, another couple of weeks would have been great. We came home to a 40 degree swing in temperature and Arctic winds howling across the fens which has now been replaced with cold heavy rain. The positive is that whilst away Dad was loading the winter barley which has averaged 9.6t/ha. Given it had no moisture for 4 months and was cut 3 weeks early it was a pleasing yield. Happy New Year, and let’s hope it is a good one for all those involved in agriculture and associated businesses, although I fear the challenges the industry faces are many and varied with no sector unaffected. Milk prices are falling due to overproduction, arable margins under pressure from plentiful global supplies and a weak market for alcohol, eggs threatened by increasing outbreaks of avian flu, red meat at risk of restrictions from bluetongue, and all of this coupled with unclear UK Government policies, unpredictable application of tariffs by the Trump administration and wars Guy Lee in parts of the world that could easily develop into global conflict at any time. Of course all of the above creates opportunities for the optimist, we, farmers, are fleet of foot and embrace challenge but we do need some certainty to invest in the future. Last month I wrote about how we became involved with Nserester School and farm in South West Uganda. In December I spent three very happy days seeing for myself the achievements they have made in the 11 years since my last visit. Politically Uganda is a troubled country with the 81 year old President Like magic, there was water! Museveni standing for a seventh term in this week’s elections. On my first evening I met many of the Nserester students we had arranged sponsors for 15-20 years ago, they were not asking for money they just wanted to say how grateful they were that someone had taken interest in an orphaned child and what they were now doing. They all had jobs, most a family, it was very emotional hearing their stories. The next day I was driven by Isaac and his wife Rosemary from Kampala to Masaka, stopping for breakfast on the equator where we watched the water go opposite ways down a bowl either side of the meridian. We then arrived at the secondary school where there was music and dancing to greet me but sadly no students as schools had been forced to close early as there were concerns about violence during the election campaign. I was asked to officially open the borehole they had successfully sunk earlier in the year. This was saving a lot of money. Overall the school looked in reasonable order although some of the original buildings erected 30 years ago are deemed unsafe by the authorities and have been demolished. There is a very ambitious plan to build a new hall, offices and teaching blocks, construction is underway but halted at present until further funds are raised. This is our focus for 2026 and we will be reporting monthly in Agrimart how we intend to reach the target of $300,000. We are a registered charity and any donations are enhanced by gift aid. After a morning at the school we went on to see a former pupil’s initiative, which was incredible. As a child Umar Mpande was orphaned along with his five younger sisters. He was rescued from abject poverty by a sponsor we knew and was given an education and hope at Nserester. He took up boxing and was so successful he won a gold medal for Uganda in an international match in Kenya. He is very grateful for the chance he was given in life that he wants to repay his fortune by helping others. Umar set up the Masaka Boxing Club starting with no gloves, no premises, and certainly no boxing ring and he now has over 30 children he has accommodated, four sets of gloves, helmets and pads. He is renting premises which are not ideal but adequate and what he really wants is a portable ring. His determination was so impressive, and as the signed up patron of the club I want to support him. The next day we drove two hours south round Lake Victoria to the farm where there are many projects supporting the disadvantaged in society. I saw the tractor that was purchased by Agrimart readers 18 Umar Mpande, an impressive and years ago - still a runner! The Collier Hall that we had raised determined former student funds to build which is used for the teaching of agricultural skills to local farmers as well as the young. I went round the winery where red wine is made from pumpkins. It is a genuine product with every bottle having an approved stamp from Uganda Trading Standards. I was amazed to see literally ‘Wine on Tap’ as the audience in the hall helped themselves to a glass or two! Apparently some locals were still there two days after my visit having overindulged! On my last night we stayed in a hotel where they were digging a new soak away. I could not believe the soil, a hole more than 10 metres deep was pure soil, no rocks, no stones, no change of colour just pure brown earth. No wonder Uganda is such a fertile country sadly lacking investment. Agrimart tractor, now 18 years old Wine on tap - literally!

EFA Green Cover Can now graze before 31st December. Potential to grow a winter forage crop for livestock grazing. Potentially kale and stubble turnips EFA Nitrogen Fixing Crop Can be harvested before 1st August. You can apply herbicides for grass weeds and fungicides but no insecticides. Two crops required as two individual stands. No crop can be more than 75% of total area. Must include at least a 3m margin around the crop/ field which complies with EFA margin requirements. EFA Agroforestry Must have been planted under a Forestry Grant Scheme since 2015. This could have been through a small or farm woodland grant. NEW: EFA Low Input Grassland Must be on permanent grassland (this permanent grass area will not be included in your arable area so no more EFA will be required). Can apply organic fertilisers but no inorganic fertiliser can be applied. Fields must be used for grazing or cutting for hay or haylage. Where the fields are cut, an uncut margin of at least 6m wide needs to be left which must be grazed after the grass has set seed. EW EFA Herb and Legume Rich Pasture Establish and maintain a species diverse sward by overseeding or reseeding. You are allowed to apply lime, phosphate and potash fertiliser but no nitrogen fertiliser. Must include 3 different herbs or legumes (minimum 1 legume). Sward needs to be maintained from 1st January to 31st December. In first year must be established by 1st July. NEW: EFA Unharvested Crop Leave an area of single species crop unharvested. Must be between 6 and 20 metres wide and clearly distinguishable on the ground until 31st December. Must be a single species of cereal, oilseed crop or a spring sown pea or pulse crop. Can apply phosphate and potash but no nitrogen or pesticides. Area can be undersown. After 31st December the crop can be grazed. NEW: EFA Low density tree planting Require low density trees with 20 to 50 trees per hectare. Trees must be native species and can include fruit trees. Minimum area managed of 0.5ha. Can be planted in rows in arable fields. Require appropriate guards to protect from browsing.
