            About NZ’s dairy industry
Dairy is New Zealand’s biggest export earner, producing about 20 billion litres of milk from 4.7million cows.
CRV has a long history of investing in genetics to ensure New Zealand’s cows are some of the most efficient in the world with traits that ensure animals are healthy, last in the herd and are efficient producers of milk.
New Zealand’s dairy industry has embraced technology and innovation to improve productivity, sustainability, and animal welfare. This includes advancements in genetics.

    Key facts:
          4.67 dairy cows million
          20.7 billion litres of milk
10,601 herds average herd size 441
60% of cows are HolsteinFriesian/Jersey crossbreed
          Breeding strategy provides better genetics
Genomic testing is allowing CRV to breed better bulls faster. That is evident in New Zealand’s breeding programme where technology is being used to deliver superior genetics to our customers world-wide.
CRV’s grass-fed genetics manager, Peter van Elzakker says genomics provide a more accurate insight into a bull’s potential at a much younger age.
“By leveraging our genomics and our strategic partnerships with breeders, CRV has been able to accelerate
genetic gain and deliver bulls that excel in breeding cows that are healthy and productive,” says Peter. “Our increased representation on the RAS is further proof our strategy is paying off.”
Glen Kaycee Sherlock JG, a CRV Jersey bull is New Zealand’s top bull across all breeds in the latest Ranking of Active Sires. An example of the strength of CRV’s breeding programme in New Zealand.

        Best polled options
CRV has introduced more polled options. With two copies of the polled gene (homozygous), these animals will always produce polled offspring saving you time and money by removing the need to disbud.

          CRV exclusive: facial eczema tolerance
Exclusively from CRV, FE tolerant sires provide an effective way to increase your herd’s tolerance to FE challenges, resulting in healthier cows and improved production.
          Selecting the best
CRV’s breeding team has a long history of sourcing the best bulls for our customers.
Bulls are sourced from breeders, our nucleus programme, mating contracts and the open market. CRV is also ensuring faster genetic gain by using genomic testing to identify the potential of animals earlier.
The purpose-built Bellevue Production and Logistics Centre opened in 2014.
The 38ha property includes cattle yards, animal housing, collection area, semen processing facility and distribution centre.
In 2015 Bellevue became an EU accredited semen collection centre meaning our quality control processes are the best.
          Low N
To help you meet your environmental goals CRV has built a team of LowN sires which have a lower than average breeding value for Milk Urea Nitrogen.

The reliability of genomic breeding values is improving rapidly and the interest of farmers in using the latest genetics via young InSire bulls is increasing. In CRV’s European Holstein breeding programme, the application of genomic breeding values has resulted in a doubling of genetic gain.
Once selected, the bulls are housed at Bellevue, a purposebuilt facility in the Waikato.

          At
CRV we can provide advice and access to products and services to help improve the fertility of your herd.
FertaBull – get more cows in calf
CRV’s FertaBull straws contain the semen of three elite sires in each straw, lengthening the time semen is viable, giving cows a greater chance to get in calf.
Recent research in The Netherlands showed FertaBull increased dairy farmers’ average 56-day non-return rate (NRR)
          High semen fertility sires
Based on actual farm data collected through CRV’s AB technician service, we have identified our very best bulls with at least 3% higher non-return rates than average.
This provides an opportunity to select bulls which will likely improve in calf rates.
by 3.7 percent. The results were based on NRR data from over 40,000 inseminations using CRV FertaBull Belgian Blue.
This improved NRR means for every 100 inseminations, around four more cows will get in calf using CRV’s FertaBull when compared with average conventional straws.

Create replacements from your best cows using CRV’s sexed genetics to increase milk production, reduce bobby calves, and increase dairy beef income.
Reasons to use frozen sexed genetics from CRV include:
Sexed semen is available from CRV’s highest indexing bulls, recognising that farmers want quality replacements from their best cows.
You’ll have more control. Get exactly the sire you order and manage their mating allocation on the day.
Combine use of sexed semen with Estrotect Breeding Indicators for best conception results.
Each pregnancy from sexed genetics gives a 90% chance of a heifer.
CRV collaborated with Genus IntelliGen Technologies to provide a new and innovative sexed semen technology.
The use of sexed genetics continues to grow in New Zealand with CRV investing in technology to give farmers access to what they need, when they need it.

“Using CRV’s sexed semen is helping us achieve our herd goals faster. I can’t fault the product and CRV has been instrumental in helping us choose the right bulls to achieve our breeding goals.”
