ThisbookletisdesignedtoorientyoutotheVioletSocietyProgram(VSP).TheVioletSociety Programprovidesstudent-centeredacademic,career,personal,andcommunity-building supportthroughoutyourtimeatNYUGrossmanSchoolofMedicine(NYUGSOM).
TheprogramisorganizedintosocietiesnamedafterNYUGSOMluminaries(LewisThomas,Helen MayChinn,WalterReed,JonasSalk,andAlbertSabin).Eachstudentisplacedintooneofthese advisingsocietiesandsupportedthroughoutmedicalschoolwithinaclose-knitadvising community.
Withineachsocietyarethreefacultyadvisors,foratotalof12facultyadvisorsacrossthe program.Facultyadvisorsmeetwithstudentsindividuallyandinsmallgroupsonaregularbasis throughouttheacademicyear,particularlyduringthefirstyear.Theyprovideacademic coaching,careerguidance,personalsupport,andmentorship,andserveasconsistentpointsof connectionasstudentsnavigatemedicalschool.
Eachfacultyadvisinggroupisalsosupportedbythreeseniorstudentsintheirfinalyearof medicalschoolorpursuingadualdegree.Thesestudentsareselectedthroughacompetitive processandserveasPeerMentors,providingnear-peersupport,guidance,andinsightintoboth preclinicalandclinicalexperiences.
