Born and raised in Okinawa, Japan, up-and-coming artist Tsuhako Maria has remained steadfast to continually create art which is both open and honest. Through color, Maria unleashes her subliminal thoughts onto canvas, bearing her inner life for viewers to see. Over Tsuhako’s years of practice and exploration, she has come to the understanding that in order to paint with certainty she must be aligned mentally and at heart.

An abstraction workshop taken in Arizona in 2017 under Marianne Mitchell exposed Tsuhako to a more spiritual artistic expression through light and dark contrasting landscapes. With simplicity, fewer colors, and overall more intention, Tsuhako realized the power and comfort of abstract painting and has since been her preferred stylistic choice.

And this approach has allowed her to emotionally detach from negative feelings and experiences to create positive artworks.

I grew up in Okinawa, Japan, which is where I got my start as an artist, and eventually set up a studio out of which I currently work. Although my immediate surroundings may have changed some over the years, I have remained consistent in my pursuit of open and honest.

In my work, I strive to bear my inner life for all to see.

I want to share what I am feeling as vibrantly and as clearly as I can, and I draw inspiration from all the colors around me. Anytime I paint, I want to get out of my conscious mind and let my subconscious thoughts, beliefs, and perceptions flow outward, doing everything that I can not constrain my creativity. In doing that, I believe that I can make art that more closely resembles life, art that I can be proud to call my own.
