Stare at one of Tristan Wendlinger’s abstract paintings and you’ll be hit by a sudden wave of adrenaline rush. Quick, dynamic explosions of saturated pigments flood the canvas; vibrant cascades of acrylic paint applied with rubber spatulas, spray cans, and vigorous brush strokes confer motion and luminosity to the pieces. Occasionally, Wendlinger incorporates gold leaves, sand, or coffee grinds to add further texture to the surface. Every element intuitively yet deliberately laid out by Wendlinger maps out an exciting itinerary for the viewer, whose eye travels swiftly over swells of color and jutting lines. The artist’s guiding hand remains soft however, letting each of us decipher a message based on our individual sensitivity.

Based near Toulouse, in southern France, Wendlinger studied graphic communication and designs store signage for a living. He juggles his artistic practice with the demands of family life, painting furiously in between his son’s naps, in a tiny studio he built for himself in his garage.

I try to make my spectators travel. I do so by offering images that can be deciphered by the individual sensibility of the viewer. During this process, each person embarks on a journey that is unique to them, by immersing themselves completely in the work. Although my style and technique evolve every day, I am most comfortable with using a palette knife or rubber spalter, which create a thick textured surface. I paint with acrylics in vivid hues, guiding the curious eye of the observer through color associations and intersecting lines.
