The intricate detail and incisive lines pierce the spaces of Rhonda Burton’s photographs. Cascading greenery and exuberant blossoms tremble forth from the frames of Burton’s captured images. Burton’s photos reflect a specific Los Angeles character – her succulents and agave brimming with movement and reflecting the slow heat of a desert day, perhaps in an overgrown garden in Pasadena or the Hollywood Hills. Coming to photography from watercolor painting, Burton began her art career early on showing and selling locally, but was pushed into the corporate world by life’s obligations. She has jubilantly relaunched her art career to much acclaim showing in galleries in Los Angeles and winning several awards. Like photographic representations of Georgia O’Keefe’s work, Burton hopes that from her images one can pause for a moment to contemplate the stillness of nature, the universe in a dahlia, the music in a rose petal. Her current body of work reflects a lengthy process in which she hand embellishes photographic images printed on cold-pressed paper. She then uses colored pencils and pastels to strengthen certain aspects and obscure others after which a collage of handmade rice paper is adhered resulting in a painterly effect.
Burton lives and works in Los Angeles.

I view each day as an opportunity to create. The beauty of my garden and surroundings are a source of endless inspiration, season after season. I am fascinated with every little detail: the flower petals or subtle color change of succulent leaves, the way the sun casts intricate shadows on the sidewalk, or the textures of tree barks. I take photographs of these small miracles we pass by each day with very little notice. I crop the pictures tight or shoot close-ups so that the subject becomes the focal point of the composition. My current body of work consists of hand embellished photographic images printed on cold-pressed paper. I use color pencils or pastels to strengthen or soften certain areas I want the viewer to focus on and often collage handmade rice paper onto the photograph. This process conveys a painterly feel to each piece and allows me to interact with the surface. A sense of calm and peace emanates from my work, as I express the glory of nature.
