The Agnes Irwin School - Annual Report 2025

Page 1

A MESSAGE FROM | SALLY KEIDEL

As I write this letter, we are still in the very first few weeks of school on Ithan Avenue, where the air is crackling with excitement and possibility. Even after 33 years in academia, the power of the new school year never diminishes for me. Meeting new students, faculty, and families while greeting returning friends and colleagues has become an annual exercise in joy and community.

This year, at The Agnes Irwin School, we have much to celebrate. Our enrollment stands at its highest in a decade, affirming Agnes Irwin’s position as the top choice for all-girls schools in our region. Our Middle and Upper School studentathletes are playing on state-of-the-art turf fields, featuring revolutionary materials presently unavailable at any other independent school in the state. For the first time since 2020, our Lower School girls are back to enjoying delicious meals prepared on-site and often served family-style in our newly enhanced Dining Room.

So much of this incredible forward momentum of our school would not be possible without the generosity of the people listed in these pages. Please accept my profound gratitude for your commitment both to the work we do here at Agnes Irwin, and to the 660 girls who benefit from it each and every day.

Thank you for your support,

“Giving to Agnes Irwin is so important to us because we profoundly believe in an all girls education. We see how deeply our girls are known by each of their teachers. We know that our gift each year ensures that Agnes Irwin’s teachers are supported so that they can continue to inspire and bring out the best in our daughters.”

Agnes Irwin is a school built on excellence. For more than 155 years, our graduates have applied the lessons they learned at Agnes Irwin to effecting change in their communities and around the world. Our challenge now, as it has always been, is to sustain excellence for the legacy of its graduates and for the coming generations. We are charged with continuously growing our academic and extracurricular programs to meet the ever-changing demands of an increasingly global community. The Agnes Irwin Fund enables us to do so with the ability to hire talented faculty, coaches and staff as well as offer superior programming on our beautiful campus. We have immense appreciation for each gift to The Agnes Irwin Fund.

THE IMPORTANCE OF GIVING TO | AIS

WHAT IS THE AGNES IRWIN FUND?

It supports the overall budget of the school, enabling Agnes Irwin to provide the highest quality experience to our students. It helps provide enriching and empowering educational experiences beyond what tuition supports. A high level of community participation creates a shared commitment for the school to succeed in its mission.

Supporting The Agnes Irwin Fund has an immediate and direct impact on our girls’ experience at AIS. Independent schools like Agnes Irwin cannot operate on tuition dollars alone. In addition to retaining exceptional faculty and supporting operational and programming expenses, Annual Fund dollars help mitigate the cost of tuition – keeping AIS accessible to a broader population of families. Programs like our newly re-opened Lower School Dining Hall, offering nutritious, fresh meals prepared on-site for our youngest learners, would simply not be possible without The Agnes Irwin Fund.

Of note: Unlike tuition payments, donations to The Agnes Irwin Fund are tax-deductible.

WHAT ARE OTHER WAYS I CAN SUPPORT AGNES IRWIN?

There are three additional ways of supporting excellence at Agnes Irwin:

Pennsylvania’s State Tax Credit Programs

The commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) programs allow both individuals and businesses to redirect tax dollars to The Agnes Irwin School. When an approved individual or business contributes to AIS through either program, they receive tax credits up to 90% of their total contribution to the school. This year Agnes Irwin raised over $1.8 million which went directly to offsetting the financial aid budget and very meaningfully contributed to the school’s financial health.

The Agnes Irwin Endowment Fund

The Agnes Irwin School’s endowment provides critical long-term support for the school. Gifts to the endowment strengthen and reinforce the legacy of Agnes Irwin for generations to come.

Restricted Gifts

Restricted gifts are those with a donorspecified purpose. Whether it be the purchase of equipment, sponsoring a visiting scholar, or helping fund a scholarship, these gifts are earmarked for a specific purpose and are not a gift to The Agnes Irwin Fund.

Parents’ Association

Parents’ Association is dedicated to fostering positive school spirit, supporting AIS through fundraising activities and providing opportunities for community engagement. While gifts to the Parents’ Association are not counted toward a donor’s overall giving to Agnes Irwin in the Annual Report, they make a significant contribution to the school. Past donations to the Parents’ Association have paid for Faculty/Staff Support, classroom upgrades, prom, wireless sensors for science labs among many others.

ANNUAL FUND CLASS CAPTAINS

The role of the Annual Fund Class Captain is to be an advocate for the Agnes Irwin Annual Fund and to promote a better understanding and appreciation for The Annual Fund among current parents. Ultimately, our goal is that this greater awareness will lead to higher parent participation in the Annual Fund and foster a more philanthropic parent community.

Our Class Captains focus on having strong class participation in The Agnes Irwin Fund. They play the critical role of communicators with parents within their grade by way of emails, phone calls and text messages. They also ’share’ social media related to The Agnes Irwin Fund. They are also encouraged to attend phonea-thons we have throughout the year and invite their friends to come along. These phonea-thons have a party-like atmosphere with music, food and refreshments and end up being a great way to socialize with other Agnes Irwin parents while volunteering for a great cause.

We are grateful to this year’s Class Captains for all they have done!

AGNES IRWIN Q&A | WHY WE GIVE

Olivia Romeo Dykstra ‘05 and Anna Alburger Romeo ‘09 share many connections beyond a name. Sisters-in-law since 2021, both are former swimmers and field hockey players, proud AIS alumnae, and profoundly committed to giving back to their alma mater. In 2015, Olivia reached out to Agnes Irwin to found a restricted scholarship fund for incoming extraordinary ninth graders that follows them across all four years of high school. Inspired by Olivia, Anna established her own restricted fund in 2025, also intended for exceptional upper school students. Read on for more about Olivia, Anna, and their inspirational connection to Agnes Irwin.

AIS: Olivia and Anna, tell us a little bit about yourselves and your connection to Agnes Irwin.

ORD: I was introduced to Agnes Irwin by my friend Lauren Nordsiek (‘04). After a few visits, I followed in her footsteps, starting at AIS in ninth grade. It was the best decision! In addition to making life-long friends, I loved the ability to try many things on for size: field hockey, swimming, plays & musicals, Glee Club, and student government.

AAR: My older cousins attended Agnes Irwin, so I was familiar with the school’s reputation, but it wasn’t until I arrived as a ninth grader that I truly fell in love with it. I was very involved in athletics, participating in field hockey, swimming, golf, and crew. In my senior year, I served as captain for both the field hockey and swim teams. Academically, I loved Agnes Irwin’s science classes – so much so that I originally planned to major in it in college. I also loved sharing my passion for the school as a tour guide.

AIS: What do you carry with you from your AIS education? Is there a class, a teacher, a moment that you find yourself reflecting on most frequently as an adult?

ORD: At AIS, I found my voice. I entered college, and later, the workplace, as a more confident and authentic version of myself.

AAR: My four years at Agnes Irwin were truly transformative. Before attending, I was often shy and hesitant. The school taught me to be more confident in myself, to think critically and to approach challenges with a sense of curiosity. I don’t think it was a single teacher or class that instilled these qualities in me, but the entire community.

AIS: We are so impressed by your respective dedication to Agnes Irwin. It’s particularly remarkable for young alumnae – and sisters-inlaw! – like yourselves to make such a robust commitment to your alma mater. What prompted each of you to start a scholarship fund?

ORD: My parents have instilled a “pay it forward” mentality in me. Agnes Irwin is such a powerful institution because of its community. As such, it is important to me that AIS can reach as many talented young women as possible. I am so grateful to be able to help provide opportunities that were so critical to my personal development - and an added bonus to contribute to the community alongside Anna!

AAR: Olivia inspired me! When she shared what she was doing with her scholarship, I instantly felt called to join her. More girls deserve the chance to experience the unique education Agnes Irwin offers. The school gave me so much, and I feel so incredibly fortunate to be able to pay it forward in this way.

AIS: Favorite AIS tradition?

ORD: I cherished my two SSP experiences. The first year I shadowed my cousin, an elementary school teacher in Philadelphia and the second year I went to France with Madame Davis and Madame Boussion. It was my first time in France and was life-changing.

AAR: AIS EA Day!

The Blue & Gold Society recognizes leadership gifts to the Agnes Irwin Fund, EITC/OSTC, the endowment, and restricted giving. The society is composed of donors whose annual contribution to Agnes Irwin, whether unrestricted or given for a specific purpose, totals $1,869 or more, in commemoration of the founding year of our school. It is with great appreciation that we acknowledge our leadership donors. Please note: Gifts to the Parents’ Association are separately raised each year and proceeds are used to benefit specific school projects.

“I will always be thankful to Agnes Irwin for providing me with a community of love and support that instilled in me a love of learning and provided me with lifelong friends that still remain to be my closest friends”
CARTER DORRANCE MAROTTA ’07

CELEBRATING 50 Yea

Each year, Agnes Irwin’s 50th Reunion Class celebrates a treasured alumnae milestone when distinguished, passionate, and loyal alumnae gather together from locations near and far. This year, our Class of 1975 gathered in Rosemont for three days of parties, panels, and award ceremonies – and, most importantly, to cheer five decades of friendship.

Reunion Weekend 2025 was joyful and busy for all attendees, but perhaps none more so than the ebullient, tightly-bonded Class of 1975. Celebrations began with a champagne toast at the Head of School Luncheon on Friday afternoon at Autograph Bistro in Wayne. Classmates then enjoyed a guided tour of the gardens at Chanticleer, followed by the All-Alumnae Cocktail Party at 672 Conestoga Road. On Saturday, classmates joined student-led campus tours and a panel discussion about social entrepreneurship (featuring ‘75’s own Theresa Bailey Baker, Esq.!). The weekend highlight was the 150-alumnae-strong reunion luncheon, where the Class of 1975 celebrated their big alumnae award win (more on that below) at a luncheon with over 150 alumnae Reunion attendees. The class capped it all off with a party at the home of Leslie Stuart Matthews ’75 on Saturday evening.

CLASS GIFT AND ALUMNAE RECOGNITION

There is no doubt that the close-knit Class of 1975 is as committed to Agnes Irwin as they are to one another. Consequently, when it came time to choose a class gift in honor of their 50th reunion, they elected to pay it forward in as impactful and direct a way as possible – by raising money for The Agnes Irwin Fund. An impressive 74% rose to the occasion, raising over $21,000 dollars and winning Agnes Irwin’s coveted Loving Cup Award, given to the Reunion class with the highest percentage of giving by Reunion Weekend. Committee Co-Chairs Lylee Van Pelt ’75 and Gay West-Klein ’75 P ’04 accepted the award on behalf of their cheering classmates at the Reunion Luncheon.

A special thank you to our 50th Reunion Committee – Lylee and Gay – for their efforts in leading the Class of 1975 through this incredible milestone.

PARENT | GIVING

Our parent community is unmatched, having hit record highs in participation in The Agnes Irwin Fund. The entire Lower School, our 5th, 6th, and 7th grade parents reached 100% participation during Spirit Week of Giving this year. Participation for the entire parent community reached an incredible 89%, a remarkable feat! We are grateful to our parent community and grateful to our Annual Fund Class Captains for their support and hard work throughout this past year.

The following lists include current parents who have made a contribution to The Agnes Irwin Fund and do not include gifts to the Parents’ Association which are recognized separately. Gift amounts do not reflect pledges or commitments beyond the current year.

EITC | OSTC

Participation in the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) programs, administered by the commonwealth of Pennsylvania, provides a significant tax credit to eligible individuals and businesses to allocate a portion of their tax dollars to The Agnes Irwin School. This program has been transformational for Agnes Irwin.

The contributions from the generous donors and entities below have helped provide scholarship assistance to Agnes Irwin students. This year the programs raised over $1.8 million in support of scholarships for highly qualified and talented Agnes Irwin girls.

For more information on how to participate in this program, please visit agnesirwin.org/taxcredits or contact Emily Rauch, Associate Director of Development, at erauch@agnesirwin.org.

Waste Management

Thanks to a growing number of generous Agnes Irwin community members, our studentathletes are playing on best-in-class turf fields this ’25-’26 school year. Our FOR THE WIN campaign reinvented Carter Field as the best independent school facility for field hockey in the region, using Paris GT Zero turf, a revolutionary, carbon zero field hockey product created for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Likewise, we re-turfed Phelps Field with RootZone 3D Series Astroturf, a stateof-the-art playing surface specifically formulated for soccer and lacrosse—backed by independent research. The end result is an unprecedented long-term investment in our field sports programs, enabling us to reach for the highest level by using the best surfaces and putting Agnes Irwin ahead of all peer schools. Together, we are headed For The Win!

Ellen Jordan ’77 knows what it takes to help women plan for their future. A certified financial planner who began her career at Vanguard and is now a Senior Vice President at Bryn Mawr Trust Company, Ellen leads their “Wealth Practice for Inspired Women” – experience that she intends to draw on in her new role as Vice Chair of Agnes Irwin’s Laurel Society. Chartered in 1998 by Class of 1953 alumnae Annabelle Pierson Irey and Pat McPherson, The Laurel Society allows donors to create a legacy that extends the length and breadth of their generosity – the type of gift that allows Agnes Irwin to plan for our future.

“Our fellow alumnae are smart, inspired women,” Ellen says, “and it has always impressed me to hear how often they say, I am the person I am because of Agnes Irwin.” Part of a long line of AIS graduates that includes her sister, Lylee M. Van Pelt ’75, her mother Alida M. Lovell ’53, and aunts Jane B. Carstensen ’42 and Nancy N. Hatfield ’56, Ellen says that the history of the school is meaningful for her – and that is why she wants to do everything she can to ensure it thrives for generations to come. Along with the other members of Laurel leadership, Ellen has committed to adding 75 new members to the Laurel Society and raising $10 million dollars for Agnes Irwin’s Endowment. She notes that “being in the business of investment planning and advice, I am so happy to be able to give back to Agnes Irwin and help fellow alumnae understand that planned giving isn’t as daunting as it may seem.”

Planned gifts include bequest intentions, charitable remainder trusts, gift annuities, retirement fund disbursements, and other forms of deferred support. Laurel Society members receive a gold laurel leaf pin and are invited to the annual Laurel Society breakfast and other special events.
