In the course of my role at Pagony Landscape Architect Ltd. as a landscape architect, my task was to finalize the design and prepare a full documentation package for a beach renewal project. This task improved my documentation skills, and also allowed me to learn a lot about working in a team for really strict time-frames. I was also responsible for liaising with the client and other collaborating professionals in order to understand their needs and to be able to provide solutions to the completion of the project. I also worked on the masterplan and the accompanying report for the redevelopment of an adventure park, as well as assisting in the design of an other beach renewal project.

New Directions Landscape Architects/ Graduate Landscape Architect My role at New Directions Landscape Architects included involvement in projects from initial design concepts through construction plan documentations to final completion. I undertook site analysis, prepared concept designs, budget estimates, construction drawings, and planting designs. Apart from that, I provided assistance on all phases of design and was responsible for liaising between interested parties i.e. architects, structural engineers, hydraulic engineers, civil engineers, street furniture and playground equipment manufacturers. I was also responsible for communicating with costumers, subcontractors, attend meetings and community design events, which enabled me to establish a strong project management and problem solving skills, whilst developing my ability to build relationships with clients and sub-contractors.

LANDSCAPE AND MIGRATION THE ROLE OF LANDSCAPE IN BUILDING SENSE OF BELONGING AND THE INTEGRATION OF MIGRANTS

Landscape and migration:

In my previous studies, I had the opportunity to explore the concept of landscape democracy and the potential of green spaces to assist the integration of migrants. Due to the proliferation of globalisation in recent decades, migration rates have experienced a significant increase, thus making immigrants and refugees one of the most influential elements of contemporary society.

Artificial environments can contribute to the building of a sense of attachment and belonging, just as much as social ties and community based relationships. Hence, it is an important consideration for landscape architects, urban planners and decision

makers to ensure that there are appropriate living spaces to help these people feel safe and to assist the integration process.

After completing the research component of my dissertation, I tried to incorporate the aforementioned integration measures into a specific landscape. That landscape was R.V Burgess Park, the epicentre of one of the most vibrant and multicultural neighbourhoods in the city of Toronto; Thorncliffe Park. Meeting the members of the community, and implementing their ideas into the design, was the core to achieve a landscape that they’ would feel safe in, and as ’one of their own’.

While the concept plan focuses on creating different areas within the park suitable for social gatherings, an other important part of the design was the individually designed new furnitures that not only serve the aforementioned social events, but foster the creation of new social bonds between the members of the community. The central community seating area is transformable into a stage within the summer times, while the new angled benched create the perfect place for the local ly organized markets and bazaars.

MALMÖ FACING CLIMATE CHANGE A RESEARCH ON MALMOS CLIMATE CHANGE SCENARIOS, AND ADAPTATION MEASURES

Malmö facing climate change:

Since the industrialization, the world has changed. Human emissions of greenhouse gases has increased, as a result of higher productivity in industries and agriculture, large scale transportation and an increased energy consumption. This enhances the greenhouse effect, causing the air, water and surface of planet Earth to heat up.

According to the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, IPCC, the warming of the planet is expected to have severe consequences on human and natural systems (Kovats, 2014).

During this project, our task was to assess the two ways of how the changing climate is expected to affect Malmö, and which values are at stake. In a top-down

approach the results of a literature study show the expectations of climate change impacts from scientists, as well as from employees and local politicians at Malmö municipality, together with their plans to mitigate and adapt. Furthermore a bottomup based analysis of a DeveLoP-survey shows what the people of Malmö values most in their city, as well as how they perceive climate change. Comparing these two analysis-approaches brings an insight in the current state of official and unofficial views on the changing climate in Malmö. It shows both an interrelation, between risks and values, but also a gap, due to the lack of cooperation between the two approaches.

Value system

The question, why surveyers picked the certain places as the most valuable, provided us with more than 50 different choice of end values. To make it comparable between the three main cityparts, we set up a value system where the end values were grouped and presented in eight distinct categories (such as beauty, nature, economical values, important in its own right or good place for a swimming etc.). With the help of the classification we were able to understand and see the difference. For example in Ribersborg most of the people chose it because of its beauty values, while in the City centre, a considerable number of respondants selected that it is important in its own right. It was a subjective process including personal decisions and choices, therefore it might have biases in it.

The survey How?

The survey was made in the digital democratic landscape planning tool DeveLoP, which presented the respondents with a wide range of questions regarding if they believe in climate change, if they have experienced effects of it, as well as what their most valued spot in Malmรถ is.

Where?

The survey was carried out in the city centre of Malmรถ. This location probably provided a large variation of participants, including residents, people working there as well as tourists and people shopping. This variation in respondents (large percent not even living in Malmรถ) probably affected what people chose as their most valuable place.

The survey had 89 respondents, 53 women and 36 men, of different ages. The amount of respondents probably does not have the capacity of representing all the citizens of Malmรถ, which is the largest limitation of the survey.

Among the respondents, people who do not live in Malmรถ stated to experience the negative effects of climate change the most. Another interesting statistic is that longer residing time results in a dropping number of experience in climate change related events.

Mitigation

The people of Malmรถ take a lot of measures on personal level to mitigate climate change. They claimed to eat less meat, produce less foodwaste, commute collectively and do less shopping. When comparing the adaptation and mitigation the data show that they place a bigger emphasis on mitigation.

Surveyed people experienced intense storm events to the biggest content. It might be because they suffered the most damage due to this. They also claimed that they were exposed to frequent storms, more precipitation commonly, more intense heat spells and a later spring.

To begin with, Malmรถ is proven to become warmer, windier and more vulnerable to floods due to sea level rise and heavy rainfalls, as a direct effect of climate change. To deal with their three major hazards of flooding, sea level rise and heat, Malmรถ municipality is focusing on working towards a sustainable future in many sectors and seems to have a wide range of technical solutions and plans for integrating the question of climate change in their general planning. The authorities mitigate and adapt the city both in small and larger scale, as exemplified in projects such as the local project of the eco-friendly area Augustenborg and the more large scale proposal of hard structure coastal protection along the shoreline of Malmรถ.

Bottom-up

The DeveLoP-survey shows that most people in the city center of Malmรถ believe in and have experienced climate change, regardless of age. The age group of 40-49 has the lowest rate of belief and experience, but besides the dip in that age group, belief and experience seems to increase with age. When people talk about experiencing the effects of climate change they mostly mean storms, floods, heat and a later spring, which is roughly the same threats that Malmรถ municipality regard as the most

When comparing the adaptation and mitigation the data show that they place a bigger emphasis on mitigation. So all in all, we can say that the majority of the respondentยดs do believe in climate change and its negative effects, and are eager to take measures in order to tackle these changes.

Final conclusion

So, Malmรถ municipality has plans to both mitigate and adapt, and 96% of the people in our survey said that they believe in climate change and seemed willing to mitigate and adapt towards it. This shows a great interest in adaptation to climate change on different levels in Malmรถ. In addition to this, when putting together the top-down risk analysis with the values from the bottom-up study, the analysis shows that the two interrelates.

The places that Malmรถ municipality projects being at great risk are also the places the people seem to value the most, proving the authorities and the people to agree on what to save from harsh weather and sea level rise.

Suggestion: EVERY LITTLE HELPS Fill the gap

To fill the gap between the municipality and the local citizens our proposal EVERY LITTLE HELPS consists of a platform with participation in focus. It is a digital tool in form of an application for smartphones, where the citizens of Malmรถ do not only have the opportunity to enrich their awareness of climate changes, but mainly to take action. The application could provide the citizens with information and tasks to collect so called greenpoints, a system that is already existing in conjunction with the green area factor (Malmรถ municipality, 2014), but would in the app be used on a more daily basis level, than as a planning tool. Before starting up the app, the user would get questions about their belief and experience in climate change, as well as their personal information, to make sure that the app brings them new perspectives and suitable suggestions of actions.

Age, gender and location of residence seems to influence how people believe and experience climate change, as shown in our survey, which the app will take in consideration to be able to give the user tailor-made information and tasks. For example, a man at the age of 45 with low belief in climate change could be provided with basic facts and proof of climate change and easy ways to mitigate, but a woman in her 20ยดs with high belief in climate change could get suggestions of actions and mitigationprojects in her residential area to get involved in.

Based on the answers of the respondents, three main areas can be defined where most of the chosen values are concentrated: Ribersborg, City centre and Möllevången. There are also other cityparts with a significant amount of values, such as Vastra Hamnen. The charts at the three main areas present the percentage of the instrumental values within each area. The area/ point value classification is different from place to place and it might have a correlation to the distribution of the end values.

Refer ences one’s home, put up bird boxes, go by bike for a certain distance, recycle or plant a fruit-bearing tree in one’s garden, to name a few examples. The projects would be initiated by the municipality, and include more or less organization from their part, depending on the size of the action-project. A bigger project, like help planting a green roof garden, would give more green points than smaller projects, like recycling ten soda cans. The projects could also take in mind the values from the people in Malmö and make sure that the suggested actions relates to the values related to the specific area. For example, the area Ribersborg was chosen by the respondents in our study mainly because of its nature and beauty, which could reflect the suggested action there, as cleaning up the beach or planting on the dunes. In Möllevången, that was mainly chosen by the respondents in our survey because of its cultural and social values, could have an action in form of creating a community garden. Bigger projects would help benefit both social, economical and ecological sustainability, and be inspired by the projects carried out in Augustenborg, while smaller projects could help initiate former non-believers in how to start mitigating. To encourage participation in the projects, the citizens will get a reward, for example free museum tickets, when a certain amount of green points is collected.

To be able to reach out with EVERY LITTLE HELPS for an even greater range of people the application should also be available through the website of Malmö municipality. In that way people without both smartphones and computers could reach the system by using computers at the city library. Advertising for the action-projects and local warnings could also be conveyed on interactive advertising signs in the most values places of Ribersborg, Möllevången and the City center.

Loop, renewing the forest: I really like to cycle through this forest, to glide under the pine trees and watch the sun and shadow playing through the canopies.

Slowing down and carefully maneuvering between the small humps on the road, where the roots of the pines are slightly lifting up the asphalt. And then comes the place that makes this forest so unique, a sunlit meadow with short grass on sandy soil and circles to lunge horses. So calm, but there is something strange in this place. If I pass it and there is no one training, it is an empty field, as if it would be missing something...

I wonder what could make it different? Is there a way to use these places in an other way to create a different athmosphere?

If you think about a forest, the trees are the main components you imagine, right?

However, a “skog�- or a forest- can be much more versatile than just a bunch of stems and a canopy layer.

In our project, we focus on the additional element that makes our forest, the Habo Ljung Fure forest. The loops are a reference to the cultural heritage of the place, which had been an open land for centuries before.

An element that binds the place spatially, culturally and functionally together, that creates a special character and atmosphere and enhances the biodiversity of the nature reserve.

0. Year: Horse riding activity on the lunging circle.

1. Year: Planting an initial “seed bank” in the “ploughed” circle. Could be done by sowing or using plug plants which are suppressed or had been indigenous in the area, such as Gallium verum, Dianthus arenarius, Anthericum sp., Sedum acre etc.. Just one or a few species at a time.

2. Year: Disturbance/ opening up of the existing groundcover around the circle by harrowing, to give a chance to the new plant species in the circle to spread.

5. Year: Harrowing to maintain and support the new species in present herbaceous layer.

6. Year: Cut down the groundcover - easier for horse riders, against afforestation.

At the same year: activating the sport/ horse riding function on the loop again, disturbing the life of the circle, but leaving the spreaded new plants around at the same time.

After the 7th year, it can be started from the beginning with pausing the horse riding function and introducing other plant species.

CAMP KAVADI KAVADI LAKE REVITALIZATION

Camp Kavadi, waterside revitalization: Prior to the design project, a landscape character assessment study had been executed on Estonia’s Haanja Uplands area.

Examining the area’s potentials and different features, 3 different capacity groups have been defined, after which a specific site had been chosen to create a plan for.

My chosen site is Lake Kavadi, which has various great features that make it the perfect place for creating a new childrens’ summer camp. The lake itself covers an approximate area of 0.30 km2, and is

surrounded by pine forests that represent well Estonia’s rich flora and fauna. Apart from that, the site lays at the feet of a slightly high hill, which not only provides an excellent view to the lake, but is a great place for different sport activities. The natural elements, the geomorphologycal characteristics, and it’s good spatial connections makes the area perfect for estabilishing a childrens’ summer camp that would not only make the kids happy, but one that would introduce them to the countrie’s most iconic natural settings.

PAJDRA LAKE REVITALIZATION LAKE REVITALIZATION, CREATING LIVEABLE CAMPING SITES

Lake revitalization:

The Pajdra Lake is located in a small remote woodland area in the southern part of Voru region, in Estonia. Surrounded by loose pine forests, with a few silverleaf poplars and the moss carpets decorated by wild berries, it resemles the athmosphere of the primeval Estonian landscapes.

Given it’s exceptional natural features and location, it is a common destination not only for tourists, but for the members of the local communities as well. The water of the lake is cristal clear, and serves as a great spot for various waterside activities.

In our project we focused on enhancing the sites natural features, and to preserve it’s valuable vegetation. The camping sites were renewed, and extended with further infrastructural elements. Apart from that, a new pavilion was added for small community gatherings, making sure that it fits into it’s environment. The beach went under a renewal process as well, providing a better experience with more opportunities.

Creating a new watchtower is among the biggest interventions on the site, extended by a small hiking trail that ensures the safe exploration of the area without disturbing the local flora and fauna.

CONTACT / PALOTANEGYED REVITALIZATION BUDAPEST 8TH DISTRICT RENEWAL

Palotanegyed revitalization: The „Palotanegyed” area in Budapest is one of the city’s most vibrant and multicultural neighbourhoods.Given its history, it is also strongly associated with crime and fear, and since it’s one of the most impoverished areas of the city, it is a place that requires more attention from the municipalities and city planners.

During this project, our task was to analyse the district, to locate the spatial conflicts, and to create a better neighbourhood using various sets of tools, in collaboration with city planners, members of the community and fellow landscape architects. After defining the conflicts, two focus areas were chosen to create a development plan for.

Not only the open spaces were redesigned, but the blocks themselves as well, with new

sets of buildings and different functions to create a liveable neighbourhood. Our project got the name „transit”, because our aim was to build a connection between the two focus areas, to build a connection between the members of the community.

On one end, creating a new square within the block, resembling a more city-like setting, then moving forward to the transit zone, which’s main function is still a transportation hotspot, and then ending the line in the second block with a new open space area for the already existing community center. Connecting these two blocks, and creating new places for possible social interactions, it is hoped that the project will promote the development of social life in the community.

ZAGREB GREENWAY RECONNECTING THE RIVER TO THE CITY

Zagreb Greenway:

Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, is one among the most visited tourist destinations in Europe.

It is home to many architectural masterpieces, and well known for it’s beautiful natural sites. One of the most important natural element, which not only shaped the city throughout the history, but the Croatian culture as well, is the Sava River.

Durint this competiotion our task was to investigate the history of the river, and most importantily, how it lost its importance throughout the years, and how it could be ’reconnected to the city’.

In our project, we aimed to create a so called zagreb ‚greenway”, which would bind together the natural features of the landscape among the river, thus creating a potential destination with various recreational possibilities for the poeple, and hopefully creating a stronger connection between the community and the river. Involving the existing sites like the: Jarun Park, Bundek Park, the Riverside Golf Field, Vjekoslava Kareka Park, and furthermore marking out new areas with possibilities, connecting all of them with a pedestrian and bike road system; we are aiming to recall the long forgottent connection between human and nature, between Zagreb and the Sava.
