California in 2021 seemed to be dominated by drought, wildfires, COVID and resulting labor and supply chain disruptions, and other challenging issues. To those of you who experienced a loss due to these, we are truly sorry.

We know the agriculture industry and our alumni have the resilience, strength and tools needed to move forward and be optimistic.

At Ag Leadership, there have been some silver linings to recent difficulties.

We’ve taken the opportunity to ensure orderly board and staff changes, update our strategic plan, introduce new programming and activities and make a much-needed office move. Through all these changes and developments, one strong theme has emerged: the need for Ag Leadership and the opportunity to positively impact California agriculture is as great as it has ever been.

Future In keeping with this theme, we have changed the name of this “annual report” to that of an “impact report.” This allows us to better highlight the ways we are making an impact and how we are delivering on our mission of “Growing leaders who make a difference.”

You’ll also notice our graphics have changed to reflect our recent brand refresh. The content has been altered, too, to better emphasize the ways impact is being realized by Ag Leadership alumni, fellows, industry friends, board and staff.

We’re focused on advancing our vision of “Leaders united to strengthen California agriculture and sustainably supply the world,” while living our values of integrity, excellence and respect.

As for the foundation’s financial position, we are pleased to report our overall net asset value has once again increased, thanks to the generosity of our many donors and the continuation of positive equity markets. At the start of the financial year ending June 30, 2021, total assets totaled just under $21.6 million and grew to $27.7 million by year end, an increase of more than 28%. Endowment and other

investment accounts started the year at more than $20.7 million and increased to $27.2 million, a gain of 31%. During this same time, total expenses as a percent of revenues and assets decreased, enabling an increase in productivity and net assets.

We are proud to share the Salinas-based accounting firm of Bianchi Kasavan & Pope has once again issued a clean opinion of our financial reports, which you can view in part in this report.

STRATEGIC PLAN Enhancing Our Impact on California Agriculture The foundation’s strategic plan, completed in May 2021, provided Ag Leadership with a roadmap for increased impact on California agriculture. The positive end results were updated mission, vision and value statements and specific and measurable goals. Combined with the tactics and metrics staff has since added to it, the plan will direct our priorities and activities for years to come.

Nearly 400 alumni, board directors, Education Team members, current and past staff, Class 50 fellows and ag industry leaders contributed their time and talent throughout the strategic planning process.

“The result of this process is a plan we can all believe in and use as a strategic filter when considering opportunities and conducting the foundation’s business,” said Ag Leadership President and CEO Dwight Ferguson. “Due to the involvement of so many, we’re confident this plan will help us enhance our impact on California agriculture.”

👁 Looking Back As the foundation and program have evolved since 1970, so has our name and logo. In the 1980s, the logo simply consisted of the letters AEF and Agriculture Education Foundation. In the mid-1990s, the logo changed to a diamond shape outline surrounding light green crop rows, a light blue sky and a white sun, plus Ag Leadership paired with The California Agricultural Leadership Foundation. In 2010, the logo was updated; it retained the name, diamond shape, agriculture imagery and color scheme, but with a more contemporary look and new font.

The foundation’s strategic plan called for a comprehensive brand refresh – including a new logo – as one of our top strategic marketing and communications priorities. Following is an in-depth description about the elements of our new logo, which reflects our brand image: dignified, enduring, respected, scholarly, exceptional, relevant, leading edge and trustworthy.

This impact report is the first print publication that showcases our brand refresh.

SHAPE

COLORS

There is brand equity in the diamond shape, which has been a part of our logo for nearly 30 years. The diamond symbolizes our legacy, tradition and continued stability. In addition, the diamond model of leadership is an integral facet of the program curriculum.

The outline of the diamond evokes a strong, academic-type shield.

The logo now has four colors instead of two. The blue, varied greens, and yellow are vibrant and bold hues. The white sun now has color. The colors also connect with our four partner universities, which have blue, green and/or yellow in their logos.

NAMES AND FONTS

The logo retains the agriculture imagery, but in a fresh, modern way. The extended row symbolizes momentum and extending/thinking/experiencing beyond or outside of agriculture.

Ag Leadership, our familiar and treasured nickname, is paired with the formal California Agricultural Leadership Foundation. The sans serif Montserrat font and font weights/ treatments give it a distinctive, modern and scholarly look.

ALUMNI MAKING AN IMPACT Since the Ag Leadership Program was first delivered in 1970, more than 1,300 men and women have become influential leaders and active volunteers in agriculture, communities, business, government and education.

The experiences and lessons learned through the program motivated them to make a difference in the agricultural industry and beyond. They embody the foundation’s mission, vision and values every day.

Horizons Spring 2021 National Cotton Council (NCC): Ted Sheely (13) was elected president of Cotton

Council International, the NCC’s export promotion arm. Mark McKean (20) was reelected chair of the American Cotton Producers (ACP) of the NCC. Kirk Gilkey (21) was reelected as vice president of the NCC. Carlo Bocardo (36) was reelected as a director for Cotton Council International.

The Fresno Chamber of Commerce and Moss Adams honored Dan Errotabere (21) with the 2020 Agriculturalist of the Year Award and Chandler Farms/Bill Chandler (6) with the 2020 Agricultural Business Award.

Rosie Burroughs (30), along with her

husband and the Burroughs Family of Farms, which includes Benina Montes (36), were selected as the recipient of the 2020 California Leopold Conservation Award.

The Fresno County Farm Bureau elected and installed its 2020-2021 board officers and directors on Oct. 22.

Daniel Hartwig (49) was elected president.

John Chandler (44), Matthew Efird (45), Jon Reelhorn (38), Alfreda Sebasto (35), Mark Sorensen (23) and Rick Stark (39) were elected as directors.

The Produce Business 35th anniversary issue paid tribute to nearly 50 vanguards who have helped build a better industry.

Included on The 35 Vanguards list: Joe Pezzini (28), Tim Vaux (31) and Karen Caplan (CALF board of directors). Included on the Vanguard Heroes list: Jack Pandol (12).

Darrell Cordova (35) ended his two-year

PROGRAM IMPACT OCTOBER 2021 - FEBRUARY 2022 These seminars would have been October 2020 to February 2021. However, Class 50 year two seminars were delayed one year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

OCTOBER 2021 Fresno State / San Quentin Criminal justice system, criminology, death penalty, polarized viewpoints and emotional responses, critical thinking skills for complex issues. Included walking tour of San Quentin State Prison which, within its population, houses California’s death row inmates.

“One thing that stood out amongst the formerly and currently incarcerated was the absence of positive and impactful leaders in their lives as youths. As a father of four sons and a youth baseball coach, I found inspiration in Sen. Jim Nielsen’s (5) advice to ‘positively impact one person at a time.’ Giving back to my community by volunteering has much more meaning and purpose now because of the power, impact and influence that positive mentorship can have on the lives of young people.”

OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2021 International Seminar to Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic Class 50 fellows learned about the impact

of the Holocaust on its victims; the conditions that led to Hitler’s rise to power; and differing experiences and cultures in surrounding countries, with a focus on immigration and human rights. The seminar added diversity and a variety of leadership lessons to their Ag Leadership experience.

I gained a true sense of understanding, empathy and compassion for people and their stories. We had the opportunity to read handwritten letters from Holocaust victims and hear a survivor’s story and those are memories I could never forget.”

JANUARY 2022 Cal Poly Pomona International seminar synthesis, reflection on CALP experience, looking beyond the program and sharing leadership lessons with Class 51.

“Having the opportunity to synthesize about our international seminar at the Pomona seminar fulfilled two fundamental pieces in our development. First, it allowed us to have time to see the impact of

our experience on our lives. Being able to process that together was invaluable. While preparing for sharing the leadership lessons we learned with Class 51, we were able to distill our entire program into the three concepts we found to be the most important. This allowed for a very high-level reflection for the fellows of Class 50 and forced us to see the big picture of our own development and progress through the program.”
