Greetings Readers and Happy Fall! We hope you had a Spicy September and enjoyed the previous month’s edition while we added a bit of “Spice to our Lives.” It was quite spicy for us here at Aging Times in an event participation way, to say the least! In September we had the pleasure of working with two great events, starting with the annual Childhood Cancer Foundation’s Glitter and Gold Gala. The event has been around for 15 years. This local charity has been raising funds to help families affected by childhood cancer. A fun night out which brought so many of our community partners together to help support such a great local organization and raise funds to support more children and their families during these times.

In addition, Aging Tree and Aging Times Magazine were able to present our First Annual Fall Festival successfully, and what a success we had! I want to take this opportunity to personally thank each of our readers for coming to the event and participating. Without our readers we would not have such a great turnout and event participation. To our sponsors, we thank you for all of your participation and partnership in the event. Without our sponsors, vendors and advertisers, we would not be able to promote and provide such resources to our readers, our community and our friends and family.

This month we changed our focus a little bit as we Pink Out for the month of October. Breast Cancer Awareness and all cancer awareness is key to being proactive in our health. According to breastcancer.org it is estimated that this year we will see an estimated 281,550 new breast cancer patients that will be diagnosed. Unfortunately, these statistics continue to grow year over year.

The goal in our first pink out edition is to bring you our community, personal and local experiences and knowledge within our home town, to our readers. What better way to honor our survivors and those currently being affected by this disease than to bring us all together.

We hope you enjoy this month’s edition and take a moment to feel for a cool crisp breeze to come through the air as we enter the heart of fall.

VA EXPANDS MANDATE FOR COVID-19 VACCINES AMONG VHA EMPLOYEES

Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough will expand his previous COVID-19 vaccine mandate Friday, Aug. 13, to apply to most Veterans Health Administration employees and volunteers and contractors who work in VHA facilities, visit VHA facilities or otherwise come into contact with VA patients and healthcare workers as part of their duties.

Under the expanded mandate, employees who will need to be vaccinated include Hybrid Title 38 and Title 5 VA health care personnel — such as psychologists, pharmacists, social workers, nursing assistants, physical therapists, respiratory therapists, peer specialists, medical support assistants, engineers, housekeepers and other clinical, administrative and infrastructure support employees who come into contact with VA patients and healthcare workers.

“We’re now including most VHA employees and volunteers and contractors in the vaccine mandate because it remains the best way to keep Veterans safe, especially as the Delta variant spreads across the country,” Secretary McDonough said. “This pandemic is not over and VA must do everything in our power to protect Veterans from COVID-19. With this expanded mandate, we can once again make — and keep — that fundamental promise.”

The department’s decision is supported by numerous medical organizations, including the American Hospital Association, America’s Essential Hospitals and a Multisociety group of the leading Infectious Disease Societies. The American Medical Association, American Nurses Association, American College of Physicians, American Academy of Pediatrics, Association of American Medical Colleges, and National Association for Home Care and Hospice also endorsed mandating COVID-19 vaccination for health care workers.

As with the previous mandate, directive affected employees will have eight weeks to provide proof of vaccination to their local VHA Occupational Health Office.

All VA employees are eligible to be vaccinated at no personal expense at any of our facilities and would also receive four hours of paid administrative leave after demonstrating they have been vaccinated.

END-OF-LIFE & HEALTHCARE DECISION MAKING For some people diagnosed with breast cancer, there may come a time when they cannot express their healthcare and end-of-life preferences. And that’s why it is important to create a Health Care Power of Attorney and Living Will.

Health Care Power of Attorney (a/k/a Health Care Proxy) Your Health Care Power of Attorney (HCPOA) appoints one or more individuals of your choosing to make healthcare decisions for you when you are unable to do so. A properly signed HCPOA will help ensure that your healthcare wishes are followed. Having a HCPOA is especially important if your loved ones disagree about treatment. If you are later able to express your healthcare wishes, you will again make your own healthcare decisions.

Choosing Your Healthcare Decision-Maker

The person(s) you select to make your healthcare decisions should be a loved one that you trust to follow your wishes. You should talk to the person or people you

intend to appoint about your wishes and confirm that they will do what you would want.

Living Wills (a/k/a Advance Directives)

Accompanying a HCPOA should be a Living Will. A Living Will puts in writing your desire whether to use, refuse, or remove life support when you are at the “endstage” of a terminal illness or are in a permanent coma vegetative state.

Do not confuse a living will with a "do not resuscitate" order (DNR). A DNR says that if you “flat-line” from a heart or lung problem that you do not want to be resuscitated. Everyone can benefit from a living will, while DNRs are for people for whom it wouldn't make sense to administer CPR. REPLACEMENT OR CORRECTED SOCIAL SECURITY CARDS DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Social Security offices are currently open only for inperson appointments for limited, critical situations, depending upon local office conditions. However, you can continue to apply for a replacement Social Security card online and by mail. Before requesting a replacement card, please remember that you might not need the physical card. Most of the time, simply knowing your Social Security number is enough.

If you have a critical situation that requires you to have a physical card and you cannot apply by mail or online, you should call your local Social Security office. Please visit our Coronavirus (COVID-19) Updates page for more information at www.ssa.gov/coronavirus.

APPLYING ONLINE

If you don’t need any changes to your Social Security Number record (such as a name or date of birth change), applying for a replacement card online is your most convenient option. You don’t need to mail proof or visit an office.

You can use our online application if you are an adult, have a state-issued drivers’ license or nondriver identification card, and live in the District of Columbia or one of the 45 States that verifies Stateissued documents for us. All you need to do is create a my Social Security account to access and complete the online application at www.ssa.gov/myaccount/ replacement-card.html.

Acceptable secondary proofs include, but are not limited to: • Employee identification card.

• Health insurance card (not a Medicare card).

• U.S. military identification card.

These proofs must be current (not expired), show your name and identifying information (such as your date of birth or age), and be an original or a certified copy.

If you need to change your name, when you mail your replacement card application, you will need to submit proof of identity plus proof of the name change.

The proof of identity can be primary or secondary proof. Proof of the name change could be a marriage certificate, divorce decree, Certificate of Naturalization showing the new name, or a court order approving the name change.

You may be able to submit one document to serve as proof of your name change and identity. For example, you may submit a marriage certificate as proof of name change and identity if the certificate shows the marriage occurred within the prior two years and: • Includes your prior name.

HEALTHY LIVING FOR THE SOUL

CHANGE AND TRANSITIONS As leaves turn and fall, we are reminded of the changing seasons of life. Some changes are small and subtle; others are greater due to illness and the loss of loved ones. How do we cope with inevitable life changes?

When my daughter was little she called nightmares, night mirrors. Nightmares exist in the darkness where our fears rise up. Darkness can be in our day time thoughts too. When we look in the mirror, we may see the ravages of aging, surgeries, food binges and lack of exercise. We may need a conscious effort to let in the light.

Perhaps we heard things as a child or teenager that formed our opinion about the way we were meant to be. Barbie Dolls definitely had an impact on how women saw themselves. Body image brings its trials and tribulations. We may have challenged our bodies to fill out and shape up. We may react with a desire to change or fix what we see reflecting back at us; enhance it, expose it, hold it in, or cover it up. Remember the wicked stepmother, “Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all?” This quote represents the loss of youthful beauty and speaks to letting go of what has been.

What if we could use the mirror as a friend who gives encouragement and appreciation? Turn the tide on seeing loss and use the mirror as our cohort in change.

Instead of lamenting over the inevitable changes and false inadequacies; acknowledge, appreciate and affirm our changing bodies. Affirmations are a tool for realigning our thoughts, focusing the runaway mind back to the good.

I have written messages on my mirror with red lipstick. A favorite is simply, “I love you.” Once my granddaughter Kylee asked me why I had that on my mirror. I answered,

As she did, a smile crossed her face and she giggled.

Love and appreciation of others begins with loving and appreciating ourselves. We must fill our cup with love so it can spill over and nourish others.

What if we took some time each day to look in the mirror and speak words of love and appreciation to ourselves?

This may be difficult at first. Focus on your eyes while repeating self-appreciation messages. On colorful index cards write positive, affirming sentences like: My body serves me and I am grateful for that service.

Our bodies carry us about, performing with a beating heart and breathing lungs without our need to control. Having a daily practice with spoken words of appreciation affirms that we are a walking miracle. As our bodies change, there is room for acknowledgment and appreciation. Go ahead; read this aloud, “I am a magnificent manifestation of life.”

Let the mirror become another tool for your Healthy Living for the Soul.

“Look in the mirror. Do you see yourself?”

PASSIONATE ABOUT PINK Lorna Jean Hagstrom is Inviting Everyone in Town to Embrace Her Favorite Color for the Month of October

Lorna Jean Hagstrom is wearing her signature pink and new favorite color for the promotion of AdventHealth DeLand Foundation breast cancer awareness.

Although she is not a survivor herself, she has witnessed many who have battled the disease and some who have lost their fight. Her goal is to continue to fight for and alongside of those familiar with the cancer war.

Her fight is personal, because she is leading AdventHealth DeLand Foundation’s annual Pink on Parade philanthropic events. She is the chairperson of AdventHealth DeLand Foundation and has served in this role for the last 20 years. Ms. Hagstrom is passionate about the Foundation’s impact on our community. Her focus is promoting opportunities for West Volusians to have their “healthiest life possible.”

For the past six years, the dealership had donated over $130,000 to our local programs assisting the hospital to provide cancer related care to those in need.

During the month of October, AdventHealth DeLand Foundation will host breast cancer awareness with its Ninth Annual Pink on Parade 5K. This year’s event is a virtual 5K. Fundraising efforts will benefit hospital programs and initiatives such as early detection screenings, free mammograms for the underserved, and survivorship educational programs to support those impacted by breast cancer.

What drives Ms. Hagstrom is her desire to improve the community of DeLand. “I want to make sure my children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren are living in a community that is healthy and safe. Our hospital is the epicenter of our community’s well-being,” said Hagstrom.

This year’s AdventHealth Pink on Parade invites the community to dine and shop their way through Downtown DeLand during their virtual 5k. Registration is available at pinkonparade.com. Event funds benefit AdventHealth DeLand Foundation and stay local.

Those who wish to participate in the virtual 5K on their own, can walk, run, skate, bike, or swim their way through their 5K in their local neighborhoods, backyards, or gyms. Those who want to create a team can either shop and dine in Downtown DeLand or they can map out their own 5K path at their favorite park or beach.

It is not where you participate or who you participate with but how you participate that matters to Hagstrom.

“We need everyone to sign up and contribute. Every dollar counts and every dollar goes to the cause,” said Hagstrom. “So, we need to pass the word and encourage others to participate.”

The only requirement is for Pink on Parade participants to sign-up online and get their teams together. “We try to keep everything very simple. Last year we had people of all ages participate and this year Stetson University students are joining in the effort to help our cancer patients,” said Hagstrom.

Although AdventHealth DeLand is hosting their virtual 5K for the entire month of October, Hagstrom encourages everyone to sign up as soon as possible.

The money stays in our local community and participants will receive a tax benefit for their donation.

“We need to reach our goal for our patients as quickly as possible. Walk in honor of someone or walk in celebration of someone you love…but walk. It is critical that we all work together to care for those in our community battling cancer. No one should feel alone in this battle,” said Hagstrom.

RECONSTRUCTING YOUR LIFE AFTER MASTECTOMY Breast cancer is an epidemic in America. Data shows that one in every eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and tens of thousands of women die from it each year. Mastectomy is one of the primary tools women have in their battle against breast cancer.

As grateful as we are for the lifesaving measure, it too comes with complications.

Ashley Jackson of Ormond Beach has a history of cancer in her family. Her grandmother died at an early age of ovarian cancer, and her mother was BRCA positive. BRCA gene mutations, which increase a woman’s likelihood of having breast cancer, are genetic.

At 31 years old, Ashley learned that she too was BRCA positive, and without intervention, her chances of getting breast cancer were nearly 90%.

She watched and supported her mother as she had preventative surgeries, knowing that she would eventually find herself in the same position. After waiting several years to start a family, Ashley underwent a complete Mastectomy and Oophorectomy this year. As Ashely recovered from her recent surgeries, her mother was with her. Ashley was out of work for five weeks, “It was hard. The thing that made it work was my mom being here to pick up the slack.”

The thing about mastectomy is that it doesn’t just remove dangerous tissue; it takes a part of what makes women feel feminine. “I have been really angry with my body for the last six years,” she told me. During her career as a social worker, Ashley has taken the time to

But she’s also wise enough to know that she needs support. “The most important advice I can give,” said Ashley, “is to be kind to yourself and connect with other people who understand your experience.” 33% of cancer patients will experience a mental health problem, but often these emotional issues take a back seat to their physical recovery. Whether you’re in the throes of breast cancer, trying to support someone you love, or just here to learn more about the disease, the message is clear.

Ashley got support from FORCE (Facing Our Risk Of Cancer Empowered) that provides resources for BRCA positive individuals. Organizations like The National Breast Cancer Foundation and The American Cancer Society also offer support and empowerment for women fighting or recovering from breast cancer.

October is, and always has been, one of my favorite months of the year. Growing up in Western New York may be one of the reasons for it. HOW TO PLAY SUDOKU

The goal of Sudoku is to fill in a 9x9 grid with digits so that each column, row, and 3x3 section contain the numbers between 1 to 9. At the beginning of the game, the 9x9 grid will have some of the squares filled in. Your job is to use logic to fill in the missing digits and complete the grid. Don’t forget, a move is incorrect if: • Any row contains more than one of the same number from 1 to 9 • Any column contains more than one of the same number from 1 to 9 • Any 3x3 grid contains more than one of the same number from 1 to 9

SUDOKU TIPS

Sudoku is a fun puzzle game once you get the hang of it. At the same time, learning to play Sudoku can be a bit intimidating for beginners. So, if you are a complete beginner, here are a few Sudoku tips that you can use to improve your Sudoku skills.

Tip 1: Look for rows, columns of 3x3 sections that contain 5 or more numbers.

Work through the remaining empty cells, trying the numbers that have not been used. In many cases, you will find numbers that can only be placed in one position considering the other numbers that are already in its row, column, and 3×3 grid.

Tip 2: Break the grid up visually into 3 columns and 3 rows. Each large column will have 3, 3x3 grids and each row will have 3, 3x3 grids. Now, look for columns or grids that have 2 of the same number.

Logically, there must be a 3rd copy of the same number in the only remaining 9-cell section. Look at each of the remaining 9 positions and see if you can find the location of the missing number.

APPLE CIDER DOUGHNUT CAKE Ingredients

1 box yellow cake mix, any brand 1 cup apple cider (do not use apple juice!) ¼ teaspoon cinnamon ½ cup apple sauce 3 large eggs, room temperature 1 tablespoon brown sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 tablespoons cinnamon sugar ¼ cup sugar ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted Optional Apple Cider Glaze Dip 1 cup powdered sugar ¼ cup apple cider

How To Make Apple Cider Doughnut Cake 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. In a large mixing bowl, beat the dry cake mix, apple cider, apple sauce, water, and eggs.

3. Add in cinnamon (¼ teaspoon), brown sugar, and vanilla to the cake mix batter.

4. Grease and flower a bundt pan, then pour mixture into pan.

5. Use center rack and bake for 45 minutes, once toothpick is clean upon test remove from oven.

6. Cool on a wire rack for at least 20 minutes.

How To Make Apple Cider Glaze Topping (Optional for Dipping) 1. Whisk powdered sugar into ¼ cup apple cider until desired consistency.

2. In a separate bowl, mix together the cinnamon and sugar.

3. Pull Cake out of oven once cooked take your melted butter and brush the surface of the cake then sprinkle the cinnamon sugar onto the cake.
