This month people and organizations across the nation will celebrate their historic places. DeLand has three districts on the National Register of Historic Places including the Downtown Historic District, the Northwest Residential Historic District, and the Stetson University Historic District. There are also local landmarks.

Preserving historical assets is one of the ways a community demonstrates pride. It helps create a sense of place and shows that a community is willing to invest in itself.

President Richard Nixon proclaimed, “As the pace of change accelerates in the world around us, Americans more than ever need a lively awareness of our roots and origins in the past on which to base our sense of identity in the present and our directions for the future.”

Our mission at MainStreet DeLand is to support and enhance the continuing economic development of downtown DeLand while protecting and promoting its historic heritage.

Places and the stories behind them are both worth saving. The next time you’re downtown, check out the plaques on the buildings, the historic murals, and visit the West Volusia Historical Society. Happy Preservation Month!
