A NEW CHAPTER: TASD BUILDS ON A STRONG FOUNDATION

MISSION

Educate and empower each student for success in a global society

PILLARS OF TASD STRATEGIC PLAN

Student Achievement, Community, Engaged Titans, Finance & Growth Management

STANDARDS OF EXCELLENCE

Teamwork, Communication, Accountability, Innovation

As I step into the role of superintendent, I am honored to return to a district rich in history and brimming with potential . Reflecting on Tea Area’s journey, it’s evident that our community’s dedication has transformed our schools into vibrant centers of learning and growth

The past 22 years have laid a solid foundation, marked by resilience, innovation, and a commitment to excellence From the initial challenges to the remarkable achievements we’ve celebrated, our district has demonstrated what is possible when educators, students, families, and community members unite with a shared vision This momentum is clearly visible in the community’s commitment to our schools

The current expansion at Tea Area High School is a testament to that belief—an investment not just in facilities, but in the future of our students With 25+ additional classrooms, a new main office, a wrestling practice facility, and a Fine Arts Center featuring a 1,200seat auditorium and black box theater, this project reflects a bold vision The Performing Arts Center alone will enhance student experiences for generations to come

Just as our community and partners invest in facilities, our faculty and staff are equally committed to improving the systems and programs that support students every day From building a strong, supportive culture to improving learning outcomes and streamlining district operations, our team is united in ensuring our students and staff have what they need to succeed This shared dedication drives our continuous improvement efforts and ensures we remain responsive to the evolving needs of our students and families

It’s a privilege to join a community so deeply invested in its students, and I look forward to working together as we continue the work already underway, helping advance the vision you’ve set for the district Together, we will ensure that Tea Area remains a place where students thrive, staff feel valued, and Titan Pride continues to shine in all we do

ORTHOPEDICS INSTITUTE BRINGS 280 EMPLOYEES TO TEA AREA

The Tea area welcomed a major new employer in February 2025 when Orthopedics Institute opened its new state-of-the-art medical building at 2120 Live Longer Street When the 85th Street bridge is completed, the institute will have direct access to Interstate 29 and Sioux Falls proper

The independent physician group has 330 employees, of which approximately 280 will be based at the Tea location The 80,000-square-foot facility offers more services under one roof, expands clinical space and continues the group’s cutting-edge orthopedic care Founded in 1972, Orthopedic Institute was located on the Avera McKennan campus until this move It has eight satellite clinics located in eastern South Dakota, plus four in Minnesota and three in Iowa

FROM TINY TO TITAN TOWN, OTTEN FAMILY TREASURES TEA

In the late 1960s, when Curt Otten was bussing tables at the Tea Steak House or pumping gas at his dad’s Kerr McKee station, the population in Tea was only about 300 people . “Way back in the day, I was on the City Council and I was one of the town’s volunteer fire fighters, too . There was only a couple older guys and a few businessmen plus the postmaster in town making up the fire department during the day . I used to joke that ‘If your house catches on fire, you might just as well let her burn ’

When people pulled into his dad’s gas station asking for help to locate someone, Curt didn’t know everyone’s address, but if you told him the name, chances were good … “I could give them directions to where they lived You knew everybody ”

First and Main in downtown Tea in 1970. Curt Otten’s father operated the service station near the center of this photo. Other landmarks in the photo, going to the left from Otten’s Kerr McKee, are: Schoenhard’s Cabinets, Hoffman’s Grocery Store, Post Office, O’Tooles Bar and the Tea Steak House (on the upper left edge of the photo). The building to the right of O’Toole’s Bar was Tea City Hall.
Darla and Curt Otten.

Tea has grown up a lot since then . “We’ve got anything you want here We’ve got a nice hardware store, a couple nice grocery stores, there are some gyms and pizza places and restaurants,” Curt said “What I really like to see is the young folks stepping up They organize TeaPot Days and we’ve got a big Park & Rec Department There’s a new sports complex with ball diamonds and soccer fields, pulling kids from everywhere ” His wife, Darla, agreed “I like the Saturdays in the Park with the vendors and other fun things ”

Darla worked as the bookkeeper at Larson Truck Sales for 31 years For many years, Curt traveled the country training funeral home directors on how to sell pre-arranged funeral plans The last decade or so of his professional career, he worked for his late son-in-law, Justin Lake, at Vern Eide Motor Cars in Sioux Falls Curt held several positions including training salespeople

In retirement, he loves working in the yard, growing a lot of annuals and perennials Darla grows vegetables in their church’s community garden, ultimately making homemade salsa and rhubarb jam . The couple typically spends a few weeks in the winter somewhere warm

A GOOD LIFE

Curt and Darla met at Nettleton Business School in Sioux Falls in 1973 She grew up on her parent’s farm in the Westfield, Iowa, area For most of their 51 years of marriage, the couple has lived on Carla Avenue in the heart of “old Tea ” “It’s been a good life here,” said Curt “We raised our kids in this neighborhood with a lot of people who still live here It’s one of the few blocks in Tea where there’s quite a few ‘original’ families ”

Their four children all live in Tea, albeit in the newer part of town In fact, the siblings live within six blocks of each other, allowing the cousins to go to school together and for the adults to be able to help each other picking up and dropping off kids Their grandchildren range in age from 25 down to one . According to Curt, “We’re a close family We all like to cook We have a lot of family dinners and other get togethers, especially in the summer We’re always together ” Their children and seven of their grandchildren were baptized at Tea’s Trinity Lutheran Church One great-grandchild is on the way

The family of Curt and Darla Otten. Clark, Emerson, Sarah, Clint, Melissa, Melissa holding Ellis, Aaron, Darla with Paxton in front; Curt, Cierra with Tenley in front, Hunter, Sami Steinfeld (Hunter’s Girlfriend); Amy and Austin. Missing from photo are step-grandsons, Cayden and Tryce.

FOUR GENERATIONS OF OTTENS HAVE CALLED TEA HOME; FIFTH GENERATION IS ON THE WAY

Youngest son, Aaron, is a banker at First Interstate Bank in Sioux Falls He also serves on the Tea City Council His wife, Melissa, is the marketing director at American Bank & Trust Their daughter, Ellis, is the new princess in the family Darla watches Ellis one day a week “just for the fun of it,” something she wasn’t able to do with her older grandchildren And Ellis has Grandpa wrapped around her finger, taking him outdoors to push her on the swing frequently

Curt and Darla’s oldest son, Clint, is a sales manager at Vern Eide Motor Cars Clint and his wife, also named Melissa, have three children, Hunter, Emerson and Cierra Melissa owns The Truckers Place Inc , a business specializing in administrative assistance for truckers such as licensing, permits and fuel tax reporting

Otten’s youngest daughter, Sarah, has been a fifth-grade teacher at Tea Elementary School for 20 years Her husband, Clark Slykhuis, is a service representative for Innovation Systems They have four children: Cayden, Tryce, Paxton and Tenley .

Otten’s oldest daughter, Amy, has one son, Austin, who will graduate from Dakota State University in May Amy’s husband, Justin Lake, died from heart arrythmia four years ago .

For many years, Amy was a social worker for the South Dakota Department of Social Services Her experience at DSS prompted Curt and Darla to become foster parents, ultimately fostering numerous children over the course of several years

Grandson Hunter is continuing the Otten family’s Tea traditions . He’s purchased a home in Tea with his girlfriend, Sami Steinfeld The baby they’re expecting in July will be the fifth generation of this line of Ottens to call Tea home

MAKERS EXCHANGE: THE REGION’S NEW GO-TO DESTINATION FOR FAMILIES

Local, handcrafted goods + an upscale shopping experience + the taste of fresh and original food choices = Makers Exchange in Tea .

Makers Exchange LLC opened in September 2024 and is quickly becoming a go-to gathering place not just for hardcore shoppers, but also for families More than 100 independently-owned businesses are using the location to showcase their wares . Makers Exchange is located just off the Interstate 29 exit 73 and to the north of Casey’s General Store

The shop owners do a phenomenal job of keeping their exhibit areas fresh, said Karen Krull, who manages the “Exchange” (shopping) side of the complex “Some of the vendors come in two or three times a week to restock their booth and change things around So there’s going to be something different each time you come ”

Likewise, the “Market” (food and drink) side of the complex updates its menu every week “The changes keep people watching the menu to see what will be new, whether it’s our soups, sandwiches or salads In the morning, people enjoy our artisan waffles,” said Amy Balster, the Market manager

The Market also sells fresh and frozen locally grown food, such as cheese, beef, pork, sourdough bread and gluten-free mixes Customers particularly enjoy products from the Hutterite colonies “All of their cheese and other products is absolutely delicious and it

Amy Balster and Karen Krull in front Makers Exchange in Tea. Amy manages the “Market,” which includes a café, frozen and fresh food. Karen manages the “Exchange,” which includes all the wares of 100 independent businesses selling an eclectic mix of handcrafted goods.

sells so quickly,” Krull said Balster added, “The Market has kind of farmers market feel with the specialty products in one location ” The Market also has ready-made salads or fresh take-and-bake meals that are convenient for lunch or the evening meal

VISION AND PASSION

Most vendors and customers are within a three-hour radius of Tea; typically from South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa After Stacy’s Market of Tea closed during road construction, a group of local families saw a gap that needed to be filled . These investors had the creative vision of a gathering space and a regular sales outlet for small businesses, said Balster

“For some of the vendors, this is a full-time enterprise But for others it is a passion project or creative outlet . They have full-time jobs and don’t have the availability otherwise to have a storefront,” she said “I know when I did events and shows, customers would ask ‘Where can I find your stuff regularly?’ It’s nice we can offer a set place for them ” Vendors are responsible for creating, maintaining and restocking their space There’s a monthly rental fee plus a small charge for each transaction to cover incidental expenses such as credit card fees .

DESTINATION SHOPPING EXPERIENCE

The Exchange is a destination shopping experience with an eclectic mix of products that are appealing to both women and men There are florals, gifts, children’s clothing, cutting boards, laser-made signs and man-cave décor Krull said “You can come here and get something for anybody on your list Everything is extremely unique –items you will never find in a big box store If you see something you like, you’d better get it because it won’t be here long The vendors have so many beautiful handmade pieces, custom creations they love to share with the entire community ” Makers Exchange is fortunate to be building much of their customer base through strong word of mouth marketing

For husbands who may peruse the Exchange sales floor more quickly than their wives, the Market side of the venue is a good place to hang out with big screen TV and beverages from coffee and espresso to beer and wine

There are many goods and gifts for sale that will interest both women and men at Makers Exchange in Tea.

A BIG HUG FROM TEA

The community of Tea has embraced Makers Exchange . According to Balster, “During the week, we’ve had women meet here for their book club On Saturdays and Sundays, we have a lot of families who will meet up to have breakfast or lunch and then do some shopping .” Krull added, “We feel like we’ve gotten the biggest hug from Tea and the whole state of South Dakota It’s been absolutely heartwarming ”

Makers Exchange also hosts classes and has events for special occasions such as Mother’s Day and Christmas Events include

vendors outside in the parking lot featuring produce from local farmers or items too large to be displayed indoors During the European Christmas Market, Krull was at the register for 13 straight hours and Balster was making hot chocolate and apple cider nonstop The facility owners and their children were all pitching in to help wherever they could

They’ve also been reaching out to the local business community When Orthopedic Institute opened its new home in Tea, the Market moved its opening time to 6:30 a m to accommodate the many OI employees who start at 7 a m Balster said, “We also do

a featured business of the week where we offer the employees a free drink as a way to introduce the facility The other day, we had Sherwin Williams in here and, you know, they are not our usual target market But a bunch of their guys are now coming in regularly They had a preconceived perception this was a ‘girly spot ’ But now some are eating lunch here three times a week plus are buying eggs and meat It’s also been fun for us to get to know more about local businesses ”
