STATE LEADERS SUPPORTED 2023 SKILLS CHALLENGE SERIES The 2023 Associated General Contractors of Georgia (AGC Georgia) Skills Challenge series provided an electric ‘game day’ atmosphere for nearly 2,000 student competitors and observers from 104 schools. Within the competing schools, 19 participated in two or more Challenges. One school enrolled competitors in five competitions! Our team is proud to
offer this series that serves as a great way for competitors to show off their talents which often times peaks the interest of local contractors.

SKILLS cont’d from page 1 Skills Challenges help address the labor shortages facing the industry. When contractor members come together to engage with AGC Georgia, we are all helping expand the talent pipeline. The annual competitions were held in Gainesville, Macon, Marietta, Columbus, Statesboro, Moultrie, Rome and Augusta. The 2023 Columbus event was the first for the West Georgia market. “Our partnering member contractors, and many other industry professionals who offer their support, enable the AGC Georgia Skills Challenge series to showcase rewarding careers available throughout the trades,” AGC Georgia CEO Mike Dunham said. “We are proud to spearhead this initiative that is directly helping increase the number of students transitioning from high school to construction programs at technical colleges and into the workforce.” One of the most important components is that Challenges were well attended by hundreds of industry advocates including Georgia Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones, Commissioner of Labor Bruce Thompson, dozens of state legislators, school superintendents, high school principals, mayors, school board members and leaders from the Department of Education and Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG). Lt. Governor Jones visited with competitors at the Northeast Georgia Skills Challenge and Commissioner 2
Thompson visited with those at the Metro Atlanta event. They were so impressed with the talented competitors that they followed up with cash gifts to each of the first place winners from these two competitions. At four of the eight events, TCSG provided complimentary use of three mobile welding labs, along with expert guidance from the labs’ traveling instructor. This was a tremendous benefit to host contractors and served as a great way to introduce TCSG’s offerings to competitors. Additionally, this year’s competitions received considerable television, radio and print media coverage. The core competitions for the Challenges were Carpentry, Electrical, Masonry, Plumbing and Welding with select challenges offering Blueprint Reading, Cabinetmaking, Fine Furniture/ Woodworking, HVAC, Heavy Equipment Operation, Roofing, Sheet Metal and Team Build. This series served as the qualifier for the winners of the core five construction competitions that are listed above. Students placing first, second and third in their home
region’s competition within those five trades were afforded the opportunity to compete at the SkillsUSA Georgia State Leadership & Skills Conference (SLSC) held in February at the Georgia World Congress Center. There was also an opportunity for a four-person team to qualify for the TeamWorks competition in four locations. Along with the hundreds of hours of time and expertise volunteered by our regional contractor champions, Skills Challenges raised $550,000+ in cash and in-kind material contributions that went to the AGC of Georgia Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. In regions where sponsor support provided a surplus of funds after expenses, contributions are made to area high school construction programs to help teachers deliver firstclass hands-on instruction and prepare their students for future competition. Please make sure you check out the back cover of this issue to find QR codes to the 2023 photo galleries as well as dates, locations and contacts for the 2024 AGC Georgia Skills Challenge series.
