In a new feature in the Broadsheet, we will feature and celebrate significant events that have taken place in the College's History.

In 1992, Chester Cathedral celebrated the 900th Anniversary of the foundation of the Monastery in 1092.

Various celebrations were held throughout the year in the Cathedral but the highlight was a Concert sponsored by Barclays Bank featuring The Royal Marine Band and Abbey Gate College Chapel Choir.

The Organist was Graham Eccles and the Choir was conducted by Stewart Smith. The Concert featured music performed by the band and choir alone but also both Band and Choir came together for some pieces.

The climax of the Concert was Hubert Parry's setting of the Coronation Anthem 'I was glad', it raised the roof!!

Stewart Smith said 'This concert was a year long in the making from initial meetings with the sponsors through to the actual day of rehearsing and performing with this world famous professional Band. I will always be grateful to the Cathedral Organist Roger Fisher for recommending Abbey Gate Choir to the sponsors and the Band as this event was one of the great highlights of my 39 years as Director of Music.'

It was very appropriate that Abbey Gate should have been involved in the 900th anniversary celebrations as the College is housed on the site of a former monastic building which homed the Abott of the monastery in Chester as well as a number of workers who served the monastery.

Also in 1992 as part of the Cathedral's 900th anniversary celebrations, our Chapel Choir led the singing at two further events.

Following a spectacular Flower Show in the Cathedral organised by NAFAS under the Chairmanship at the time of Dorothy Irvin (a PE teacher at Abbey Gate College), the choir sang for the closing Festival Evensong at which the preacher was the Most Reverend Alwyn Rice Jones (Archbishop of Wales).
