Loibawrence Powell was born on Thursday morning, March 5, 1964 at Saint Michael’s Medical Center in Newark, New Jersey. Although he often jokes about the year being incorrect on his birth certificate, the date is correct. Lawrence grew up in a modest home with his sister Annette, in the city of Rahway, New Jersey. Their parents, Hark and Rebecca Powell purchased this house in 1957 and resided there until their demise in 2023.

Lawrence attended Rahway Public Schools—Roosevelt Elementary, Rahway Junior High and Rahway High School, graduating in June 1982. Admittedly, there were a few incidents during those formative years requiring occasional parental visits. His mother used to say she attended school just as much as Lawrence—to address behavioral issues like talking too much and challenging authority.

Lawrence and Annette were raised in a godly home. Particularly, their mother was adamant about teaching and training her children to live for Christ. Consequently Lawrence was “born again” in January 1980 at Holy Mountain Church of God in Christ, also in

Rahway. His pastor was Elder Robert Lee Bragg—beloved by many and now in heaven. Elder Bragg along with his lovely wife, Mother Gladys Bragg, provided a wonderful example of Christlikeness to follow. It was under their spiritual care that Lawrence recognized and acknowledged a call to ministry. Immediately after completing his high school studies Lawrence headed off to college and graduated from University, in December of 1986. A short break allowed him to secure a full-time job at American Express in travel services before attending graduate school at Oral Roberts University in August 1988. Life at ORU was a refreshing experience, affording him the privilege of meeting people from all over the USA and abroad. While there, He also met the university founder and president, worldrenowned evangelist, Dr. Oral Roberts and his wife, Mrs. Evelyn. In time, Lawrence was blessed to visit Dr. Roberts often in his California home. The last visit with him was five days before his passing. Leaving New Jersey wasn’t an easy decision to make, but Lawrence felt drawn to ORU and planned to ultimately settle in Los Angeles, California after graduation. There he could

escape the chilly winter temperatures of New Jersey to enjoy the sunshine and warmth of Southern California. Nevertheless, while in Tulsa, Oklahoma it became clear the time away from New Jersey was temporary. Purpose and destiny required a return to his home state and city for ministry. Convinced he had heard from God, Lawrence rolled up his sleeves to labor in word and deed. Lawrence’s beginnings were humble when he first answered the call of God to pastor.

The first service of Agape Family Worship Center was held in his parent’s garage on Sunday, May 27, 1990, with seven adults and four children in attendance. Today, nearly thirty-four years later, Agape has become one of New Jersey’s largest congregations. Each week families flock to Agape from across the tri-state region to experience warm fellowship, dynamic worship and anointed teaching. Through outreach, evangelism and multimedia broadcasting, Lawrence has been blessed to share the Gospel with people all over the world including Canada, Liberia, Kenya, South Africa, Brazil, Germany, France, Fiji, New Zealand, and the Philippines. From a small garage, to the now state–of–the–art facility, known as

Agape Pointe, Lawrence’s vision and commitment remains the same, “To show and share God’s love with everyone everywhere.” His humble spirit and genuine heart for people endear him to diverse audiences of every ethnicity. With a strong commitment and genuine passion for outreach and evangelism, under the leadership of Lawrence, Agape provides assistance to the local community and those in prison by supplying much needed resources, materials and support services. Countless testimonies of hope, healing, and transformation pour in from those being touched and liberated through Agape’s outreach efforts.

A much sought–after speaker, respected Biblical teacher and author, Lawrence earned a bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University, Master’s degree from Oral Roberts University, and a Doctor of Strategic Leadership from Regent University.

It is obvious to all who know Lawrence, that He is preparing and positioning a mighty generation of world changers, poised to advance and expand the Kingdom for the glory of God.

Lawrence is the author of five books, The Power of the Seed, It’s Your Call, Take the Plunge Volume I and II, and his most recent release, The Good Life.

Lawrence is the doting father of three, Adria Janelle, Aaron Raphael and Ashlyn Gabrielle. He is also the grandfather of Skylar Lee Peoples.

Q&A

with Dr. Lawrence Powell

When you think about 60 years of life, how would you describe it?

Wow—sixty years of life! Way back when, my juvenile self imagined sixty was old age. I don’t think that anymore.

Rather, I’m a firm believer that sixty is the new fifty.

I am truly amazed by God’s grace and goodness to me over the years. I’ve had my share of life’s ups and downs, but I must say the good times far outweigh the bad. It’s been a wonderful journey filled with extraordinary experiences.

I am so very blessed and grateful to have decades of precious memories that make the tapestry of my life richer.

36

What are some greatest lessons you’ve learned? (Success and Failures)

The first thing that comes to mind is a quote attributed to Sir Winston Churchill. “Success is not final; failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.” I have something in common with everyone, “hits and misses” i.e., successes and failures. Life in Christ has taught me that no matter what, all things work together for good and God’s glory. His desire and determination overcomes the worst of human failures to produce beauty from ashes. Furthermore, I’ve learned every great move forward in life and ministry requires a leap of faith. The LORD rewards faith in Him. Where God guides, He provides and where there is vision, there will be provision. Take care of God’s business and He’ll take care of yours. Keep your eyes on Jesus and you’ll never go astray. Come what may, when God is for you, nothing and no one can stand against you.

to be a chosen vessel that the LORD has used over the years to bless people around the world. Honestly, the challenges have been great, but the rewards have been greater. Faith in God has enabled me to face the tallest of giants with confidence and courage necessary to win.

“Faith in God has enabled me to face the tallest of giants with confidence and courage necessary to win.”

How would you describe 35 years in ministry? (High’s and Lows) What are some of your greatest memories?

My thirty-five years in ministry have been awesome. I’m genuinely honored

Starting a church in my hometown of Rahway, New Jersey is certainly one of my ministry “highs”. Watching “Agape” mature, soar and succeed despite enemy attacks has been super fulfilling. Long ago, I realized ministry is not for the faint of heart and that “lows” come with the territory. Many painful experiences tried to discourage and stop me in my tracks, but God’s grace kept me rooted, grounded, and moving forward.

How have your family or children inspired you to keep going throughout the years?

My children and family are nearest and dearest to me. They are gifts of God. Throughout the years their care, confidence and help have inspired me to excel in whatever I’ve attempted to do in life and ministry. I am forever thankful to God for blessing me with such love and family support.

Q&A WITH LAWRENCE POWELL Q&A
WITH LAWRENCE POWELL
“I’m determined to maximize what remains of my life and to enjoy the rest of the journey”
38

Looking forward, what does the future look like for you personally and in ministry?

I imagine a bright future full of even greater experiences and incredible opportunities to make a real difference in the world. I’m inspired to explore and discover God’s “more” in store for me. Likewise, I’m determined to maximize what remains of my life and to enjoy the rest of the journey without interruption.

At my age and stage, “what’s next” is a logical consideration. I’m certainly thinking about succession. Timing is still a question as to “when” I’ll pass the baton to someone else but I’m planning and praying about it for sure.

If a young minister was starting a church today what words of advice would you offer?

Prepare for longevity. Don’t quit. It’s one thing to start and quite another to finish. Plan to finish strong. Don’t look back except to see where the LORD has brought you and keep moving forward.

Love God. Love His people. Serve in humility. Stay focused. Have faith. Have vision. Think BIG. Be creative. Be strategic. Be courageous and strong in the LORD. Be watchful. Be prayerful. Be Biblical. Be practical. Be faithful to the end.

Grace, Mercy and Peace Be Unto You From God Our Father and the Lord Jesus

It is with great joy that I pen these few words of you the person, pastor and friend. It is often said that it is rare to have true friendships later in life but surely you knock all those theories out the window. I surely appreciate all the times you’ve trusted me to stand behind your sacred desk and minister to the great flock you pastor. Watching you on and off the pulpit is surely again seeing the person that you are, your character one of maturity and compassion, uncompromising in the responsibility of leadership, a listener when the conversation doesn't require a response. Lastly, the friend you’ve become, your sense of humor (well), your thoughtfulness is beyond measure, and your moments of true truth is why I call you friend. Thirty represents maturity, five grace and unmerited favor you have the perfect equation going into this new decade of life. May the Lord prophetically thrust you in with the greater of all your gifts and talents, may nothing be lacking and may His abundance be in overflow, may you see and complete all that God has placed in your eyes of vision. And lastly may you live your BEST LIFE EVER!

Wow! 35 years of ministry and you don’t look a day over 60! Dearest Father, I'm immensely proud of you and your remarkable achievements thus far. Your fatherly love has been a blessing. I'm eternally grateful God chose me as your daughter. I can’t wait to see what blessings God has in store for you. Thank you for your unwavering support for our family and your church family.

You are getting old but I still love you. Happy birthday to you, Happy birthday to you, Happy birthday dear Papa, Happy birthday to you.

Proud is an understatement when I think about how long you’ve been in ministry, and I’m honored to have been a part of the journey. I’ve seen you enjoy the pinnacles of ministry and fight through the valleys with grace and dignity. To this day, it amazes me that you took a leap of faith and began preaching the Word of God in Nanny and Pop Pop’s small garage. The Bible says you only need faith the size of a mustard seed, but I’m convinced yours was the size of an avocado seed because look where He’s taken you! They say being a preacher is one of the most difficult jobs in the world because you’re dealing with a plethora of personalities, constant public speaking, and you have to continuously minister to others even when you might need to be encouraged yourself. BUT GOD! Thank you for allowing yourself to be used as a vessel to bring together one of the greatest congregations known to man: Agape FAMILY Worship Center. I can’t wait to see the new heights that God is taking you to. Love you endlessly!

Best regards,

Ashly LETTERS FROM FAMILY LETTERS FROM FAMILY

This feels like your 7th milestone in the past 5 years!

You’re a fantastic father, an amazing pastor and you look great for 60! In spite of everything you’ve gone through, I believe it’s evident that you’re tight with God. Most people would look like they’ve been in the sun too long. You look tired but I’m almost positive that’s just experience and wisdom. I’d be tired too if I had to deal with raising two girls and pastoring folk who don’t read their Bibles and only reference the scriptures with wine in them! Thank the Lordt that He gave you His only begotten son (me) to help ease your troubles in life! Love you Pops! You’re the greatest father and pastor. I have always been enamored and felt honored to be able to watch you preach and teach. I would always think, “Wow, that’s my dad”. You are a godly example I’m grateful for every day.

Thank you,
