The Oscar Arias Foundation for Peaceand Human Progresshonored the founders of AFS for their vision of 50 years ago in starting the intercultural exchange organization that AFS is today. Dr. Oscar Arias, Nobel Laureate and former President of Costa Rica, inspired delegates from over 50 countries during a ceremony at the AFS Intercultural Programs World Congress in Costa Rica in September. Accepting the award on behalf of AFS WWII Volunteers were five World War II ambulance drivers -Walter Brethauer (ME 19, CM 94, IB 59T), C.B. Squire (ME 37, IB 57), Peter Minnock-Stewart (IB 1, IB 45), Norman Shethar (CM 53) and Edwin Masback (ME 37).
