The “Why” of AFS Global Citizenship Education The UN's Global Educa on First Ini a ve states, “It is not enough for educa on to produce individuals who can read, write and count. Educa on must fully assume its central role in helping people to forge more just, peaceful, tolerant and inclusive socie es.”

I couldn't agree more.

The three priori es of the UN's Global Educa on First Ini a ve-- Put Every Child in School, Improve the Quality of Learning and Foster Global Ci zenship; are about crea ng the transforma ve change we need in the field of educa on. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set forth an enthusias c agenda for global educa on. It does not only mean that educa on is all that we need, what is impera ve is quality educa on. The educa on must transform into ac on so students become ready to tackle the 21st-century challenges and thrive in their careers.

Today's world is facing major global challenges and to address these challenges, we need to prepare ci zens who know the ABCs of the being an ac ve global ci zen.

Ci zens who are ready to think globally and act locally! The increased intolerance, rise in na onalism and dearth of humanity demands ci zens – who understand the true value of educa on, the need of crea ng a just and peaceful world. The only way we can create and prepare ci zens who can resolve challenges of 21st-century world is by providing them the transforma ve educa onal experience.

With the upsurge in the popula on, we need many more ins tu ons and changemakers who are ready to dive in the process of advancing quality educa on across na onal and cultural divides. We need to have collabora on between NGOs, community leaders, government officials, leaders from diverse backgrounds and policy-makers to come together and push the agenda and priori es of global ci zenship educa on.

AFS's mission is to create a just and peaceful world and to do that, we prepare global ci zens of all ages and background. You can be a student, family, educator, etc. and you can be part of the #AFSeffect. AFS focuses on six main areas to support the global ci zenship educa on movement: - AFS helps the world learn to live together. We are commi ed to fostering intercultural exchanges, learning and understanding as a powerful and produc ve way to build a more just and peaceful world.

- AFSers embrace differences and believe our world is stronger because of them.

AFS stresses the importance of diversity and inclusiveness in our policies, programs, organiza ons and public outreach efforts.

Intercultural Learning | Educa on AFS ICL Educators' Training and Effect+ Workshops

#InterculturalLearning AFS ICL Educators' Training and Effect+ Workshops were organised in the month of April 2019.

- Gyan Ganga Interna onal School, Jabalpur - Anand Niketan, Maninagar, Ahmedabad - Yadavindra Public School, Pa ala - Delhi Interna onal School, Dwarka This supports the global movement to advance intercultural learning and global ci zenship educa on and AFS's mission to create CHANGE-MAKERS! The workshops were duly facilitated by Sarita Badhwar where 230 students and 116 teachers par cipated.

Effect+ workshops uses interac ve learning methods to teach students how they can advance the United Na on’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), while also helping them develop intercultural competences, become savvy about the world around them, and be prepared to make an impact in their local communi es. This supports the global movement to advance intercultural learning and global ci zenship educa on and AFS’s role in it.

School | Educa on Domestic Class Exchange Program

#ClassExchange Sunbeam School, Varuna, Varanasi hosted 13 students and 2 teachers from Strawberry Feild High School, Chandigarh on a domes c class exchange program which extended from 24th to 29th April 2019.

An excursion trip to Sarnath was also organized which gave the students an opportunity to explore all the exhibits. Moreover, to give them an idea about the art and culture of the city, the students also paid a visit to saree prin ng factory, “Swas k Dye� at the Chandpur Industrial Estate.

During the 6 days exchange program, the students from Strawberry Field High School were exposed to a wide array of ac vi es. It started with the short introduc on of the students in the school assembly. The students hosted gave a presenta on of their school and city.

Apart from the cultural visits, during the course of the program, the students of Sunbeam School, Varuna also organized an evening of cultural programs where the students hosted presented Bhangra performance. They witnessed a grand performance of the noted Kathak dancer Pt. Vishal Krishna, which energized the audience and was very well received by the students.

To give students the cultural experience of Banaras, the host school organized a visit to the revered Ghats of Dashaswamedh, where they witnessed the Ganga Aar , as well as Subah-e-Banaras at the Assi Ghat. It was an enthralling experience for the students.

The exchange program strengthened the learning experiences among the students of Strawberry Field High School and helped them in understanding the diversity in terms of culture and people.

Volunteerism AFS India Volunteer Think Tank

#AFSvolunteer A Volunteer Think Tank of senior volunteers of AFS India was cons tuted for the purpose of working with the Na onal office to increase the program numbers. The first mee ng took place from 2nd to 5th May 2019 where 12 senior volunteers par cipated.

VOLUNTEER CONSTITUTION The Volunteer Think Tank members consist of senior volunteers from all over India, who have been associated with the organisa on for more than 5 to 10 years and have seen AFS India through its ups and down. They were chosen as they possess the ability to influence and mo vate chapter volunteers to foster growth. They can offer crea ve yet prac cal solu ons to tackle pressing problems.

WHAT IS VOLUNTEER THINK TANK? The Volunteer Think Tank is created as a layer between the Na onal Office and grassroots’ chapter volunteer. The purpose is to strengthen the hands of the Na onal Office on one hand and to strengthen the hands of the volunteers on another. The Volunteer Think Tank will be part of the problem-solving machinery of AFS India. The members will act as mentors, advisors, and guides and they must keep their finger at the pulse of the chapter at all mes.

WHAT HAPPENED IN THE FIRST MEETING OF THE VOLUNTEER THINK TANK? Through the meet, the members came up with ideas to arrest downward growth. The meet helped in crea ng a pla orm where the members reflected on programs development and market strategy. The members studied the status of India over the years and deliberated on where they would like to see the organisa on in 5 years. Volunteers did the SWOT analysis of AFS India as an organiza on and presented their finding focusing on 4 fields: Advocacy, Sending, Hos ng and Volunteerism. They also spent me preparing and reviewing the plan of ac on. A detailed plan depic ng what has to be done in each area, who should do it and why it is needed, how to do it and when to do it was drawn up.

Tenta ve budgetary requirements were put down. Work on the same will start immediately with the inten on of recrui ng par cipants on the yearlong program.

Hos ng | Programs Taj Visit and International Departures for 2018-19 Hosting Batch

#AFSeffect A total of 51 host students with 4 staff members went on the Taj visit. The trip started early morning from Delhi to Agra for visi ng Taj Mahal on 06th May 2019. The aim of the trip was to enable the par cipants to explore one of the best marvels of architecture and seven wonders of the world, Taj Mahal. The trip enabled the host students to know more about this world heritage site. This was the last cultural excursion which was organized for host students of 2018-19 batch, just before their final departures to their respec ve countries. All the students had great fun during the trip.

The interna onal departures were lined up right from the early morning of 07th May and the students started depar ng from the 06th evening itself. All the groups departed from Delhi Interna onal Airport to their respec ve countries.

Excerpts | Assistant Secretary Marie Royce on the passing of Senator Lugar: “The U.S. Department of State and all those touched by the Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) program mourn the passing of the great Senator Richard Lugar.

Thousands of young people around the world have experienced life in America thanks to the commitment and wisdom of Senator Lugar, who along with the late Senator Ted Kennedy started the program more than 16 years ago.

Created in response to the terrorist a acks of 9/11, the YES program has brought more than 12,000 foreign high school students from countries...YES Abroad has also sponsored more than 500 American high school students to live and study abroad.

Senator Lugar was not only the co-sponsor of the legisla on that created the YES program, he took an ac ve role mee ng groups of YES students every year when they visited Washington DC.

#ThankYouSenatorLugar YES Alumni across India ini ate and successfully par cipate in an online discussion to honour Senator Lugar on 10th May 2019. The discourse of how impac ul YES Program is in the lives of YES Alumni and how the legacy of Sen. Lugar has been life transforming was first ini ated by alumni on online pla orms paying homage to the unfortunate demise of the Senator.

The discourse grew larger and alumni started expressing heartwarming stories of their interac on and associa on with YES, thereby leading to this 1-Hour webinar where 25 YES alumni from across India joined.

The webinar was also joined by staff members of AFS India who equally shared and resonated with the paradigm shi YES Program has been able to make in the young mindsets making them global changemakers.

Alumni also shares instances of how the program has helped them to become a dynamic personality with a glocal perspec ve (Global+Local). Many alumni, during their YES exchange year, also had the opportunity to meet Senator Lugar which made the interac on very nostalgic and emo onal as well.

The interac on had YES alumni from 2007 - 2017.

Below are the touch points discussed by YES Alumni: - YES Program developed Ac ve Global Ci zens & why YES is significant for Indian Par cipants.

- Program helped create changemakers in the local community - How YES enhanced so skills of youth to create change and developed sense of volunteerism.

It was a major step towards bridging cultural gaps between a lot of different cultures, as well as making long las ng rela onships and taking a solid step towards a be er and peaceful future.

Volunteerism Global Youth Service Day 2019 | Honour the Heroes

#CommunityService AFS India is happy to announce the successful comple on of Global Youth Service Day 2019 in 12 chapters PAN India with more than 250 Volunteers and 600 Students who par cipated in the ac vity. The theme for this year was honor the heroes where the volunteers were supposed to create a day of unity, empathy, and service as to pay a posi ve tribute to those who got injured or lost their in service during any Indian war. We are very glad to have the presence of all the “Heroes” who gave us a golden opportunity of honoring them. The par cipants didn’t only show an Page 08 | May 2019 | Newsle er | AFS India

amusing spirit of patrio sm towards the na on during this ac vity but also a empted to remember and salute the unforge able toil and dedica on of the brave-hearted sons of Mother India.

The volunteers did different ac vi es to pay respect to the conquering heroes of India. The spirit of patrio sm didn’t just touch the volunteers but the host students and school students as well. It was very warming to see them doing various ac vi es in various places.

We are thankful to all the volunteers who contributed their me and efforts to make the event successful.

JODHPUR

Anand Chapter

To add to the feeling of Love and Loyalty towards the na on among the students, various endeavors were taken by RKK School to pay homage to Real Heroes and honoring the veteran leaders for safeguarding the na on.

The school porch was decorated in colors of na onalism and patrio sm with its main theme "Welcome Back Abhinandan". They had Mr. Philip Thomas as their chief guest who is an Indian Airforce Officer and has various accolades in his name. A thank you bouquet was presented as a token of immense gra tude and love to him. This ac vity added the spirit of patrio sm, na onalism, and sacrifice towards the mother na on among the students.

ANAND Ahmedabad Chapter

On 27 April 2019, 66 volunteers par cipated in the GYSD ac vity and honored 11 army families. Not only did the volunteers felicitated the families but also gave the army men an occasion to convey their emo ons. The heros interacted with the volunteers and told them about the best experience they had during their term of service. Along with expressing their pride and feelings towards the na on, the army men also gave a joyful hear elt thanks to AFS India for doing such an amazing ac vity.

Mumbai Chapter

DELHI 13 volunteers from Delhi chapter gathered at BSF Camp in Chawala (New Delhi) and honored the officers by giving cards, flowers, cakes and AFS goodies to them.

The volunteers and host students had good conversa ons and interac ons with the officers over lunch. Also, the volunteers got to listen to the experience of Dr. Paramjeet (Admiral, BSF Camp) who told them about his love for the na on and talked about his encounters during his prideful service with the Indian Na onal Army.

Delhi Chapter

MUMBAI The volunteers from Mumbai Chapter paid respect to the mother of Late Cap on Vinayak More. She interacted with the volunteers and spoke very passionately of her son and his aspira ons towards the na on un l he was martyred. She also provided a glimpse of the life of soldiers who fight selflessly at the borders for the country and survive under extreme weather condi ons and pressure. They ended the ac vity by giving a thank you note to her.

The chapter volunteers at Ahmedabad proudly did two ac vi es under GYSD. In the first ac vity which happened on the 25th of April, a group of volunteers visited three ex-army men which included Ex Sub. Maj. Rajinder Prasad Joshi, Ex. Sub. Maj. Babulal and Sub. Maj. Ramji Lal along with their families. The volunteers spent me with them and got to know more about the challenges that the army men and their families face during their term of service. The second ac vity was done on the 27thof April, where the volunteers met with the family members of Late Hon/Capt. A. P. Tripathi and learned about his achievements during his term of service. The family also appreciated the support that the army gives to the families even a er re rement or demise of the army man.

The interac ons and ac vi es made the volunteers made proud of our brave army that works relessly to keep the country safe.

The volunteers of Gandhinagar chapter prepared a crea ve video for wishing, honouring and giving tribute to the army soldiers. To add to the spirit of patrio sm, they were dressed up in orange, white and green colors. The video was recorded and shown to the re red army officers at Gandhinagar on 5th May 2019, when the volunteers felicitated Mr. Nilesh Gandhi (Re red Wing Commander, Air Force) and Mr. Sandipsinh Zala (Major, Indian Army). A er introducing the dignitaries to AFS India and the ac vi es that the chapter does under the flagship of the organiza on, they paid respect to the Indian Army Soldiers by filming that impac ul video which was recorded by the volunteers. The volunteers presented them with crea ve bouquets & handmade cards and ended the ceremony by singing the Na onal Anthem along with giving a vote of thanks to everyone.

VARANASI

INDORE

600 students and 13 volunteers from Sunbeam School, Larhartara celebrated the GYSD week in their school from 27th April to 3rd May 2019 where they wrote le ers to the veterans and their families.

They organized various talks which gave the students more chances to interact with the veterans. During this week, they also called Lt. Colonel Vikas Chauhan who is posted at 97 U.P. Batallion and has 23 years of service experience. He narrated a lot of stories about the brave soldiers of our na on. They also had a special Assembly where they called the kids from army background to share their experiences. Moreover, they shared the le ers wri en by children to the Veteran families through District Soldier Board.

On the 12 April, the volunteers at Indore Chapter went to the BSF Campus to honor the heroes of our country. The students of St.Raphael School prepared a welcome song and skit with a message, which was highly appreciated by the guests present during the session. The students also had an interac ve session with the officers and wrote thank you cards to them. As a token of love, they also took saplings, sweets, snacks and home-baked cakes for the soldiers. The volunteers were very well appreciated by the officers. Being impressed by the ini a ve, one of the commanding officers expressed his interest in joining AFS India as a volunteer a er his re rement.

BANGALORE The volunteers at the Bangalore chapter hosted an interac ve evening for eminent heroes who included Air Marshal Philip Rajkumar and Mrs. Sheila Rajkumar, Rear Admiral Alan O’Leary, Brigadier Jagadish Kushalappa and Mrs. Neeraj Kushalappa, Colonel Navaz Shariff and Mrs. Navaz Shariff, Colonel Satyanarayan and Mrs. Hema Satyanarayan and Commander David Isaacs and Mrs. Beulah Isaacs. The mee ng focused more on honoring the heroes by listening to the success stories and achievements along with felicita ng them with the awards and a vote of thanks as a token of respect.

Chennai Chapter

On the 2 April 2019, 7 Volunteers from Chennai Chapter went to Anita Methodist School to give a presenta on about GYSD and made students connect with the soldiers who are serving the country. They encouraged the students of class 8th to write le ers to the soldiers and send them to the army camps. They also invited a re red army officer, Lt Col. S A V N Rajah as the chief guest of the program, who had served the country for the past 30 years. The students got inspired a er listening to his experience and had an interac ve session with him. As a token of love towards him, the students planted a sapling in the school campus a er his name.

NASHIK

Indore Chapter

Nashik Chapter

Volunteers from Nashik Chapter held a felicita on ceremony for some veterans including their family members. They had a gathering of eminent heroes like Nayak Deep Chand Singhji, Army officer Deepak Wagh, re red army men M.K. Dabhade and Veerpatni Rekha Khairnaar who were very warmly honored and received by the chapter volunteers. They also got an opportunity to listen to the experiences of these brave hearts. A er being highly obliged by the treatment of the volunteers, Honorable Nayak Deepchand Singh ji who lost his two legs and right hand on duty quoted “this honor is just not for the four of us, but for the en re Indian army”. He also congratulated AFS India as an organiza on for doing such superb things. VEERPATNI Rekha Eknath Khairnaar who lost her husband in war narrated the struggles of being in an army family and expressed that this honour reminds her to be proud of her husband and the deeds that he did for the na on. Not only were the volunteers super silent a er listening to the experiences of the guests, but they also realized that life is more than those stupid complains that we keep on doing on a regular basis.

Along with expressing their feelings towards the heroes through singing and dancing performances, they also greeted the guests with le ers, cards, flowers and had dinner with them in the evening.

VADODARA Varanasi Chapter

Vadodara chapter did three ac vi es under GYSD on different dates. On 4th April 2019, the volunteers at the Baroda chapter organized mee ng with Junior Warrant Officer Hasmukh Patel and Sergeant Jay Joshi who shared their stories and on-field experience with all of them. There were 14 volunteers in this ac vity and they had an interac ve evening with the officers. Also, on 7th April, the volunteers paid a visit to two martyrs families and spent good me with them. As a token of love, they also gi ed a home kit to the families. The third ac vity was arranged on 26th April where they visited Mr. Lileshbhai Rathwa, in Lehvat village, who is a recipient of the Shaurya Chakra award. They interacted with him and congratulated him for his bravery and service towards the na on.

Volunteerism AFS Process Training 2019

#AFSTraining AFS India is happy to announce the successful comple on of Process Training 2019. It was held in New Delhi on two consecu ve weekends, whereby the sessions for the departments related to Sending, School, Hos ng and Counseling was held from 18th to 20th May and the training sessions for sen o, volunteer and finance department took place from 24th to 26th of May. The training focused on providing exposure to various departmental processes as well as sharing the knowledge and best prac ces related to the respec ve departments among the par cipants.

The staffers played the role of facilitators during the training.

Overall, we selected 50 volunteers from PAN India, for being a part of this training.

The Process Training for the Sending and School programs was held on 18th to 19th May 2019. Volunteers from 14 Chapters were part of this process training. This training gave an opportunity to impart informa on for the upcoming cycle related to the process of sending and school programs. The Process Training introduced the par cipants to the sta s cal numbers and achievements of sending and school department in the last year. The training not only imparted a clarity on the flow of the process of programs related to sponsored and non sponsored sending but also addressed the challenges and brainstormed upon the solu ons and sharing the benefits of being an alumni of AFS India.

The AFS India Process Training for Hos ng and Counseling was held on 19th to 20th May 2019 at AFS India Na onal OďŹƒce. The Process Training had 17 eager volunteers ready to learn more about the Hos ng Process. The discussions and interac ons rounded around highlights of the previous year in Hos ng, details and meline of hos ng cycle, expecta ons and se ng the tone for the cycle to come. A major focus of the training was also laid upon empowering volunteers with the right tools for hos ng support.

The Sen o Process Meet took place on 24 to 25 May 2019.

It was a ended by 8 commi ed volunteers. The meet witnessed some extensive brainstorming of how we can take the “18+ years” program a notch up in the year to come. The sessions included a deep dive into understanding the realm of 18+ Programs in India and its significance in the increasingly fast developing world. It also included extensive awareness building of Global Competence Cer ficate (GCC) which is a very effec ve independent

intercultural learning tool for individuals from all walks of life. The cohort also conducted a SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, and Threats) analysis looking at the ground reality of implementa on of 18+ programs in their chapters and further agreed upon some priority or focus areas to look at. The training concluded with re-visi ng the expecta ons that were there in the beginning and ' cking them off' while also se ng expecta ons of the next steps.

The Process Meet for Volunteer Department also took place on 24th to 25th May 2019. A team of 6 dedicated volunteers pan India joined us in this training. The mee ng had a lot of brainstorming sessions over the topics like understanding the volunteer journey, having engaging chapter mee ngs, handling the challenges according to the chapter reali es, engagement and quality growth of volunteers, opportuni es and recogni on for the volunteers, new developments and periodical events, and volunteer & program growth. The par cipants looked very mo vated and came up with different innova ve ideas in terms of making the volunteering journey more efficient and interes ng in their chapters.

Moreover, this me, the process training for the Finance Department was held through a zoom call on 24th May and 13 par cipants from pan India joined in this online training. The interac on focussed more on discussing the financial chart of 2019 along with addressing the queries and asking them feedback with regards to the same.

The facilitators also talked about the challenges that the finance department faces while handling the chapter finances and shared the best prac ces that should be adopted by the chapters in order to make the financial process more efficient. To make the par cipants brainstorm more about how the chapter finances should be, they were also given certain case studies and were asked to work upon the same.

Understanding The Role of Volunteer Coordinator

The Process Training ended with empowering and educa ng the next genera on of volunteers. Throughout the training, the staffers focussed on sharing ideas about processes and relevant concepts of intercultural learning. Overall the sessions were very interac ve and fun-filled which made the understanding process easy for the a endees and hence they were able to take back a lot of clarity and in depth knowledge about the process that they'll be looking a er, in their chapters.
