From the

CTOR’S DESK

AFS volunteers are the driving force behind a mission that goes far beyond student exchange Through their dedication, compassion, and unwavering commitment, they help shape young people into responsible global citizens who value diversity, empathy, and mutual respect. Every interaction, whether supporting an exchange student, guiding a host family, or organizing community activities, becomes an opportunity to build bridges across cultures and foster understanding in an increasingly interconnected world.

In today’s rapidly changing and often uncertain global environment, the role of AFS volunteers is more important than ever. Young people need guidance, encouragement, and safe spaces to learn about different perspectives and cultures. AFS volunteers provide exactly that. By sharing their time, experience, and care, they inspire youth to become more open-minded, confident, and socially responsible individuals who are prepared to contribute to a more peaceful and inclusive society.

The impact of volunteering within AFS extends beyond individual students. Volunteers help strengthen communities by promoting intercultural dialogue, respect for diversity, and global citizenship values. Their efforts create lasting connections that transcend borders and generations.

As we move forward in the digital era, embracing technology and artificial intelligence will further strengthen the way we communicate, collaborate, and support youth development. Digital tools can enhance learning opportunities and expand global connections. However, at the heart of AFS will always remain the human connection, the empathy, understanding, and personal relationships that volunteers bring to every experience.

I deeply appreciate every AFS volunteer who continues to dedicate their energy and passion to this shared mission. Their contribution is helping shape a more compassionate and peaceful world for future generations

Warm Regards,

VOLUNTEER STORIES

Two decades ago, a small group of visionary changemakers laid the foundation of AFS India, driven by a shared belief in the power of intercultural understanding. What started as a courageous initiative has since flourished into a dynamic community of volunteers, host families, students, and alumni, all committed to nurturing active global citizens and strengthening connections across cultures

Marking this significant 20-year milestone, the AFS India Chairman, Board Members, and National Director came together in Mumbai for a heartfelt reunion with the iconic returnees of the 1960s. The gathering paid tribute to the pioneers whose dedication shaped the early journey of AFS in India, with special recognition and gratitude extended to Mr Dinyar Devitre and Ms Pilloo Mullan for their invaluable contributions.

Rooted in the AFS mission of fostering intercultural learning to build a more just and peaceful world, and guided by its vision of dignity and respect for all, the evening stood as a meaningful celebration of purpose and impact. Through shared stories, nostalgic reflections, and genuine connections, the event seamlessly bridged generations honouring the past while inspiring the continued journey of AFS India into the future.

Bridging Cultures, Building Futures: Letlotlo’s Journey in India

Letlotlo Seremane, a young Computer Science aspirant from the Republic of South Africa, began his University Program in India on 4 September 2025. Hosted at the Acropolis Institute of Technology & Research, Indore, Letlotlo embarked on a transformative gap year, combining technical learning with immersive cultural experiences Over the course of the year, he has been developing key computer science skills while actively engaging with the local community and embracing the diversity of Indian culture.

Over the past six months, Letlotlo has embraced his exchange experience with enthusiasm and curiosity. His gap year has provided valuable opportunities for both academic and personal growth. He has actively participated in hackathons, strengthened his programming skills through Python lab sessions, and contributed to campus life through cultural events such as Anand Mela.

Letlotlo has also experienced school life in India for a day, when he visited SDPS International School, Indore and interacted with high school students. A highlight of this visit was an engaging panel discussion where lively exchanges of ideas took center stage. The conversation focused on

bridging the gap between high school and higher education, encouraging students to reflect on how their learning connects to real-world applications and future aspirations. Through open dialogue, participants explored how different educational systems prepare young learners for university and life beyond emphasizing the importance of global awareness, critical thinking, and adaptability. He also learned the basics of Indian dance and musical instruments, practiced the traditional Warli art form, and engaged in sports activities.

He has remained actively involved in local chapter meetings to understand the essence of volunteerism and community service. Beyond academics, Letlotlo has formed meaningful friendships, explored the vibrant college experience in India, and deepened his appreciation for cultural diversity.

Letlotlo’s journey highlights the true value of a gap year as a powerful bridge between school and higher education. His experience shows how stepping outside a traditional academic pathway can create space for meaningful growth, real-world learning, and self-discovery. Through intercultural exchange, he has gained not only technical knowledge but also global awareness, adaptability, and confidence, skills that are difficult to cultivate within a classroom alone.

School Calendar Activities ANNOUNCEMENT

January to March 2026 focused on building a strong foundation for the School Calendar Activities (SCA) 2026–27, leading up to its official launch in April. During this period, we worked closely with member schools on planning, onboarding, and curating a diverse set of engaging activities for the year ahead.

Following the success of 2025 with 36 activities across 36 schools and 2,630 participants, we aimed to expand both reach and depth. This year also marks the introduction of Junior-level activities, creating more inclusive opportunities for younger students to participate

A key highlight of this phase was the development of the SCA Flipbook, which brings together all planned activities for both Senior and Junior categories, offering schools a clear view of opportunities across the academic year.

We look forward to seeing schools actively engage with the program and continue building a vibrant, collaborative learning community.
