Challenges Facing The Changemakers As massive swathes of Amazon rainforest burn in the fires, we sit in different corners of the world looking at the news on the internet.

We are aware that the dense Amazon, the lungs of the planet, play an integral role in balancing Earth’s ecosystem and the relentless fire has caused irreversible damage. It is difficult for mankind to recover from this loss and to ba le such challenges and so many others. In this month’s column, I want to focus on four imminent challenges, local and global, that we need to design solu ons for.

First, the emergency called climate change quoted as one of the six global issues to watch in 2019 on the United Na ons Founda on website. There are many countries that are not living up to their climate change commitments. Now and then, ac vists and climate supporters around the world have come together to demand leadership that considers climate change as a serious subject.

World Health Organisa on found that between 2030 and 2050, climate change will lead to approximately 250,000 addi onal deaths from malnutri on, diarrhoea etc.

Second, the conflict between states. According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, there are almost six million registered Syrian refugees as of 31 December 2018. While countries advocate peace on interna onal pla orms, there are no examples of the pragma c resolu on of territorial conflict where human lives are respected and valued, and not lost to wars. The atmosphere of hatred and intolerance violates the basic fundamental rights and threatens the fabric of humanity.

Third, advancing development through policy, innova on, and dedicated support. According to the 2019 Report Card on Interna onal Coopera on, the development priori es include suppor ng sustainable development prac ces, reducing poverty and vulnerability, advancing good governance, and reducing the gender equality gap. While there has been some progress in various aspects of human development, we s ll have a long way to go.

Fourth, focusing on global health. According to the 2019 Report Card on Interna onal Coopera on, global health priori es must focus on managing acute pandemics, addressing infec ous diseases and non-communicable diseases, and suppor ng global health ins tu ons. With an ever-increasing popula on, there is an urgent need to promote global health.

These challenges are current, relevant and significantly need a en on and efforts, especially from a genera on that understands and cares to address these. Like the Amazon fires, these challenges will haunt us- directly or indirectly, right into our bones. At AFS, we encourage our volunteer and alumni to bring change through a series of changemaking ac vi es, events, and workshops. As an ambi ous and responsible AFSer, we must gear up for our role as a changemaker in the bigger picture, bringing about even a li le change. In my column last month, I reflected on five core traits, when prac ced, can help us become a changemaker in the truest sense. I emphasized that college degrees and cer fica ons cannot define anyone’s capability as a changemaker. Your belief in yourself and your passion to bring about a posi ve change can make all the difference.

Alumni Stories Learned To Step Out Of Comfort Zone And Take My Responsibility As A Global Citizen

#YESAlumni “A er my Exchange Experience, AFS has been an integral part of my life. The YES Program has been a turning point in my life. In this one year exchange program, I learned to step out of comfort zone and take my responsibility as a global ci zen. AFS has taught me to think out of the box for the welfare of society. Through AFS I learnt about global issues and how to find solu ons to sort them.

In order to bring a change, I started an Ini a ve called Silaigram for Empowering Women and Rural Communi es to a ain sustainable development. In Silaigram, we give an opportunity to underprivileged rural women to earn a living by doing the thing which they are good at. The products that we make in Silaigram are made from upcycled cloth which gets dumped from garment factory and using such cloth reduces the a great quan ty of cloth that gets dumped in environment crea ng problems and thus a aining SDGs.

Ashoka Young Changemakers provides powerful, carefully iden fied young people and the journey of a young person who has “their dream, their team, and the ability to change the world".

Ashoka shortlisted 12 teenagers from across India out of the 1,200 applica ons for the first global edi on of the Young Changemakers program. The ini a ve's aim is to focus on the role of teenagers as influencers and co-leaders as a means to bring about large-scale social change. I got shortlisted for their Ashoka Young Changemakers meet at Bangalore where I got to interact with several other social entrepreneurs.

I had an opportunity to be a part of a Round Table Discussion on Livelihood Crea ons in Young People with Stakeholders from Government Agencies, Ashoka Fellows, CSR heads, and other Dignitaries.”

#AFSAlumni “Sir Richard Burton rightly framed “The gladdest moment in human life is a departure into unknown lands.”

“My me in India was a me I will never forget. I had so many chances to try new things and I made so many new friends. I had the chance to live in other cultures and to live with their tradi ons. But I also had the chance to try out a lot of new ac vi es.

I also tried tradi onal dance and that was the complete opposite of the tradi onal dance style in my country. Because I did the dance I met so many nice people and also found some very good friends.

The dance also gave me the opportunity to do something with the music and I learned to understand the stories behind those dance songs.

Of course I came a lot in touch with other people in my school so I also started learn the local language. I had so much fun learning the language and I loved to talk a er a while learning with others in the language which I've”.

My marvellous journey started the minute I filled in forms for my Finland Exchange Program organized by AFS. It almost feels as if it was just yesterday when I was on my own on a plane.

I had the greatest host family all my clouds of doubt and nervousness cleared the minute they walked in and gave me a warm hug. They treated me like I was their own family member, taught me a dozen of things like fishing, swimming in the lake, sauna and many more. I cannot forget the me when I saw the baby chicken taking its first step, it was so adorable.

The days just swept by the like wind and I had to leave.

We gave each other hugs, holding back tears and said our goodbyes. The one month exchange in Finland was a chapter that I would do again. It was possible to travel to the countries nearby like Sweden and Ethiopia. Finland offers one of the safest and stable atmospheres with people hard-working and always ready to help.

The program was a milestone in my journey of knowing Finnish culture and people be er.

I thank AFS, our Director and Mrs. Malik for presen ng the students with such an opportunity to help them professionally and build rela ons personally”.

The students also par cipated in the "Shola Workshop" held in Indian Council for Cultural Rela ons on 19th July with the par cipa on of about 100 par cipants wherein they learnt about the Indian cork (plant product) which can be pressed and shaped into objects of art. It was an art immersion exercise for them.

#ExperientialLearning The NSLI-Y (Year Program and Summer Program students of 201920 Batch hosted in New Delhi) were taken on an art themed Cultural Ou ng to Na onal Cra s Museum and a Contemporary Art Curatorial Walk on 28th July 2019. The students, host siblings, LCs and AFS India sta spent the day exploring the cultural history of the country and engaged in an interac ve presenta on

Some students performed at the stage while some of them tried their hand at po ery. They were amazed by the handicra s and statues. The day followed with a curatorial walk by Ar st Pankaj Manav. The ou ng was duly facilitated by Neerajj Mi ra, an Alumni and Volunteer, Delhi Chapter.

The stroll was an assemblage of diversity and cultures woven as one large bouquet of art.

#DelhiDarshan On 4th August 2019, AFS India organized an excursion for the students on the short term program of NSLI-Y and English Program hosted in Delhi. These students were part of Delhi Interna onal School, Dwarka, Modern Public School, Shalimar Bagh and Amity Interna onal School, Pushp Vihar. There were a total of 60

par cipants which included 3 staff members, two teachers from Amity School and one Volunteer.

The Day was well spent, it started with Bangla Shahib, India Gate, Nehru Museum, Safdarjung's Tomb and finally Dilli Haat where the students shopped for souvenirs and tasted some Indian Food.

#AFSUSA It was a delight to have Keri Dooley, Chief Government Rela ons and Sponsored Programs OďŹƒcer, AFS USA visit India from 28th July to 4th August 2019. During her visit, she met the host schools of NSLI-Y Hindi Language Learning Program in Delhi namely Delhi Interna onal School, Modern Public School and DLF Public School.

She also interacted with both year and summer program NSLI par cipants and her mee ng in Delhi concluded with a very vibrant dinner to show gra tude to the host families of NSLI-Y programs.

She also met some YES Alumni and interacted with them on ma ers of peacebuilding and impact of exchanges.

The objec ve of her visit was to thank the stakeholders hos ng program sponsored by US State Department. Visits were also held in Kolkata on 30th July 2019, where she met the YES Abroad program students hosted in Lakshmipat Singhania Academy the other visit was in Ahmedabad on 3rd August 2019 where she met YES Alumni, interacted with school and met the YES Abroad par cipants hosted in Ahmedabad and Mumbai. She was thakful that she could interact with YES Alumni in all the ci es she visited.

#YESGatewayOrientation AFS-India organized the Gateway orienta on for the 40 students of the Kennedy-Lugar YES Batch 2019-20 from 3rd August to 5th August 2019 in Delhi. Par cipants were excited and looked forward to learn new things. Various sessions such as Iceberg Concept; Cultural Shock & Op cal illusion; Tips & Sugges ons for Adap ng in host family & School; Le ers from the last batch; budge ng; Risk Management and Protec ng from Sexual Abuse, Impressions by the last batch, Taking Sides, Things to remember as an Ambassador and airport briefing/ immigra ons were conducted.

Many sessions were revised from the Pre-Departure Orienta on as well.

Asia Kakehashi Project National Level Gateway Orientation

#AsiaKakehashi It gives us immense pleasure to share that AFS India conducted the Na onal Level Gateway Orienta on for the second batch of students for the pres gious Asia Kakehashi Project from 19th to 20th August 2019 in New Delhi. In total, 17 Indian students and 2 Bhutanese students joined the orienta on.

The orienta on was conducted by the staff along with our alumni who shared best prac ces on various topics like What is Culture?, Ice-Berg Model of Culture, W Curve, Communica ons Styles, Budge ng, Adjustment Tips, etc. The orienta on had a broader vision to prepare the par cipants with the right expecta on from the Program with a focus on understanding the concepts of intercultural learning.

Our hear elt gra tude to the Ministry of Educa on, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) for this wonderful scholarship and opportunity to the students. It was a great experience to recruit students not only from India but also from Bhutan, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Nepal.

We also want to thank AFS Japan for their con nuous support and guidance round the clock. It was our honor to have the First Secretary from the Embassy of Japan, New Delhi Mr. Masahiro Kobayashi for the orienta on. He shared his insights about the program and the students had a great me interac ng with him.

A er the end of the orienta on, par cipants were able to iden fy what expecta ons they have for the dura on of your exchange me.

The Mid-Stay Orienta on was conducted for the NSLI-Y Summer Program, English Short-Term Program, STEM Program, Germany Reciprocal & PEACE Program in the month of the end of July to August.

Orienta on has helped the par cipants to reflect on their journey with challenges they are facing to achieve their program expecta ons. The par cipants introspect on the educa onal learning accomplishment being part of the short-term hos ng program.

This orienta on has given them an opportunity to talk and discuss different areas of the adjustment and adapta on process in a safe se ng. The orienta on was well received by the par cipants, few of them were surprised to find that others in the group are experiencing the same joys and challenges that they are facing.

overcome during the exchange me. The orienta ons helped the par cipants to recognize the posi vity in their learning for the future.

The End of Stay Orienta on was successfully completed for the NSLI-Y Summer Program, English Short term Program & STEM Summer Program in the month of August on dierent dates & ports.

The focus of the Orienta on was mainly towards preparing the par cipants for their return to their respec ve countries. For par cipants, this becomes a common vantage point to join the dots of their exchange from the beginning and end of the journey.

Overall, 36 par cipants par cipated at the end of stay orienta on.

The facilitators equipped the par cipants with various talks and sessions, which were focused to prepare them with the focus of readjustment and stay connected with the learnings. The par cipants were given the opportunity to recognize educa onal learning.

The 5 workshops focused on engaging and sensi zing the youth between the age of 14-16 years about the importance of peace and celebrate cultural integrity in diversity, posi ve world narra ve, global friendship, empathy and respect.

In the age of increasing cultural transi ons observed across the globe, these peacebuilding workshops highlighted how youth can take charge of bringing harmony in their community by star ng small and leading to an amplifier effect of mindset transforma on of how cultures are perceived.

The workshop covered certain impera ve concepts of peacebuilding such as conflict transforma on, youth as advocates of peace, community engagement and many more.

#LearningModule We are happy to introduce AFS India's Special Project for volunteer and chapter development called Learning Module for Chapter Growth. We proudly share that the project kick-started with its first training held in Gandhinagar Chapter, Gujarat on July 28th, 2019 and the second training was facilitated in Nashik, Maharashtra on August 18th, 2019.

What is Learning Module for Chapter Growth?

Learning Module for Chapter Growth is a new program developed

by AFS India where a special training agenda is prepared for each individual chapter a er reflec ng on the chapter's challenges.

The agenda of this need-based training is designed a er the assessment of surveys taken by the volunteers focusing on volunteer engagement, reten on, recogni on, transparency, conflict transforma on, respect, tolerance, inclusivity etc. Chapter Heads are consulted throughout the process — from designing to implementa on.

Post the training, a structured plan is developed that will help the chapter grow and help in crea ng more engagement amongst volunteers. A er six months, a survey will again be done, if needed, to measure the growth and development of the chapter.

Why Learning Module for Chapter Growth?

The aim of the Learning Module is to address the ongoing challenges and focus on chapter development and growth via a structured approach which is based on a Design-Thinking model.

The intent is to survey the volunteers to assess the present situa on based on which we plan and implement a need based training module for all the chapter volunteers.

Through Learning Module, each chapter focuses on finding its own iden ty and reali es, helping them focus on areas they can be er and improve.

Who were the target audience?

The major stakeholders of the training were chapter volunteers (senior and juniors), alumni, host families and educators from member schools who have joined chapter as volunteers. Through

this, we could see a 360 degree perspec ve of the all the stakeholders engaged, so that they can feel heard and acknowledged.

How did the training look like?

The agenda to facilitate the training looked like the following: – Day 01: AFS India Staff had a discussion with President and Vice President to share expecta ons from the module and what to look forward to. Discussion on challenges as per the survey's assessment was also done, keeping in mind the how the training would look like and how to go about the day.

– Day 03: Mee ng with President and Vice President to share feedback and how to tread forward. A structured plan was developed for the next six months focusing on volunteer engagement while addressing the challenges that came forward as per the assessment.

The Module has been a happy addi on to the volunteer development strategy for AFS India as we feel the volunteers have finally begun unwinding and opening up about challenges which is a major step towards building a healthy Chapter inclusive of all needs. We look forward to execu ng the Learning Module in various chapters in the upcoming months.

Volunteerism Community Service Activity At Gandhinagar

#AFSCommunityService “We decided to do this community service at Muk dham (cemetery) in our chapter mee ng of June. One of our volunteers Laxmi Joshi, who runs an NGO, distributed books to those poor children. Chapter president Varsha Parekh acknowledged that mere giving books is not enough and the chapter decided to take ini a ve of all round development of children living at Muk dham cemetery.

In July we did tree planta on ac vity with our host students and NSS students from M.B. Patel English Medium School. The program officer of NSS Varsha Parekh and the principal of the school, Arpit Chris an also joined in tree planta on ac vity. More than 500 saplings were planted by students. Our different volunteers visit muk dham twice a week and teach the poor students living there at their preferable me.

According to our volunteers, students are very enthusias c to learn.

They enjoyed learning from our volunteers. They mostly preferred to learn Maths, English and Yoga. The volunteers donated boards and benches to them. The students were very respec ul towards the volunteers. The chapter has decided to con nue this ac vity throughout the year as the students have shown a lot of interest.”

Seminar AAI Governance And Leadership Seminar

#AAISeminar Facilitated by Henrique Ramos, it was an in-person seminar which focussed on the topics reviewed online, specifically the Ten Things Every AFS Board Needs to Know. Seminar was a ended by thirteen interna onal par cipants from Austria, Denmark, Japan, Belgium, Thailand, Malaysia, New Zealand, Indonesia and India.

The seminar discussed and shared different approaches to governance and board structures in AFS organiza ons. It addressed concrete challenges faced by AFS boards (e.g. strategic planning, genera ve thinking, co-op ng Board members, and working with & evalua ng Partner Directors).

- It explored around the prac cal skills and tools necessary for AFS board members (efficiency, communica on, ensuring mo va on, stakeholder management etc.) And provide space for networking and peer exchange between board members from different countries.

- The seminar was from 16-18th August 2019. The interna onal par cipants also went for a school visit to Amity Interna onal School.

- There was also a Taj visit organized by AFS India for the par cipants.

It was an interac ve seminar full of ac vi es, games and brief discussions. And it was a learning experience for everyone.
