In the summer of 1968, bus #58 departed from Delaware with 43 teenagers from all over the world for a month-long journey across the USA. It was a very particular group: AFS students who were completing their experience in the USA. It was also a very particular summer and year: the Vietnam War, the hippie, antiwar and civil right movements were reshaping US society. It was the year Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy were assassinated, massive anti-establishment protests, riots and uprisings exploded in major cities around the world... and the Beatles were still together.

An exceptional relationship, forged between Jayshree A Mehta and Ellen, has grown steadily stronger by the years, and they have shared their lives since the very beginning.

Fifty years later, 14 of those AFSers reunited in Costa Rica to celebrate life and to renew the bonds of friendship we formed that summer. The idea of a reunion came to our dear Eugene Ragghianti from Australia. He did an immense detective work during the two years prior to the 50th anniversary: sending snail mails to all our old addresses. Can you imagine what hard work it was for him to find us all! Most of us had moved – several times, even – some of us had changed our surnames, and of course some of us had passed away. Some could not be found despite all efforts.

Little by little, we who had been “found” by Eugene joined in as assistant detectives.

Jayshree was the detective who “found me” and I was put on Eugene´s growing list of Bus#58-participants. The efforts of this team culminated in our 50th anniversary reunion in Costa Rica in July 2018, with Guillermo Chaquero Barcón and Ana Lorena Montero Lefevbre as hosts. 13 of us managed to participate; with 4 spouses we were 17 in total. On the last day of their reunion, they were honored with the visit of Daniel Obst, AFS International President, and at that moment a selfie became absolutely necessary.

The time together was indeed precious and reinforced those amazing AFS bonds forged many years ago.

AFS Spirit Still Alive and Thriving

The group decided on Norway as our next venue, and planned to reunite three years later, in 2021. The Norwegian group took the responsibility with great honor and pleasure. However, in 2021 we all were still abiding by relatively strict covid regulations and our reunion was postponed till 2023.

Walk together, talk together, all ye peoples of the earth. Then, and only then, shall ye have peace.

On 5 June 2023, 25 AFSers from Bus#58 (some spouses and one granddaughter included) met in Oslo and stayed together in Norway for a wonderful 10 days up till the 15th. The Norwegian welcoming committee consisted of Margit Solveig Thon from Ål in Hallingdal valley, Harald Bergmann from Asker outside Oslo, Bjørn Dæhlie Hersoug from Tromsø, and myself Ellen Alexandra Lothe from Oslo.

Our group did the “usual” tourist things: visited interesting sites in Oslo, Bergen, Ål, Vøringfossen, Eidfjord – we went by train, bus, tram and metro. We also had an interesting afternoon with Fredrik S. Heffermehl, Norwegian human rights lawyer, peace activist and author. He told us about his lifelong quest for human rights, peace and disarmament. The meeting with Fredrik gave new perspectives to war and peace, global and local.

Our dear Jayshree was so much missed. She had planned on participating together with her husband Ajit, but at the last minute they both could not. However, Jayshree was with us in spirit all along. The 55th anniversary reunion is now history. But the group decided to plan for a 58th one in Australia, sometime between March-April 2026. Eugene, Cathy and Ian took on the task of planning, for which we are all very grateful.

Until then, love and peace to all AFSérs all over the world.

I got back to Quito last night with my heart full of great memories. Our happy memories are overwhelming.

ADVOCACY ASN Young Leaders G20 International Summit, Delhi | 8-13 August 2023 ASN Senior Secondary School in Delhi organized a remarkable event, the ASN Young Leaders G20 International Summit, in collaboration with the United Nations Information Center for India and Bhutan and the AFS Intercultural Program. The summit took place between 8 – 13 August 2023 and was hosted at the UN House, New Delhi on 10 & 11 August.

The summit provided an exceptional platform for student delegates from various schools and countries to engage in discussions, enhance their understanding of global issues and develop diplomatic skills. 13 AFS Host Students from France, Italy, Japan & Thailand - who are in India for their one academic year high school exchange program - also joined this summit by traveling from 10 AFS Chapters.

During the week-long event, participants engaged in preparatory activities and discussions on G20-related matters, followed by presentations on various G20 sectors. Distinguished guest speakers, including Ms Kanta Singh (Deputy Representative, UN Women), Ms Ananya Pandey (Partnerships Specialist, UNICEF), Mr Manjeet Saluja (NPO Public Health & Environment WHO), and Mr Anish Somani (Programme Director G20 Secretariat), shared their valuable insights and experiences with the young leaders, providing them with a deeper understanding and perspective on the global issues discussed.

Ms Kanta Singh emphasized the importance of collective efforts for women empowerment and the creation of a more equitable and inclusive society. Mr Anish Somani, through his expertise, illuminated the intricacies of global decision-making and negotiations, captivating the audience with his narrative on diplomatic discourse.

The summit concluded with a grand award ceremony where Mr Anish Somani and Ms Swarnima Luthra (Principal, ASN Senior Secondary School) bestowed awards upon the young leaders for their exceptional skills and talents, marking their contributions to the event.

Overall, the ASN Young Leaders G20 International Summit appears to have been an inspiring and impactful event that provided students with a unique opportunity to engage with global issues, learn from experts, and showcase their abilities on an international stage.

AFS is my global family, transcending boundaries. I am currently pursuing a bachelor's degree at Christ University, Bangalore. My bond with AFS India endured post-return, with active involvement in the AFS Chapter Gandhinagar before relocating to Bangalore, where I took the opportunity to connect and volunteer with the new people by joining the AFS Chapter - Bangalore .

My wonderful journey with AFS started in the year 2019 when I was selected for the prestigious AFS scholarship program that took me to Japan.

I am glad that my journey with AFS did not end with the completion of my program, I have been interning remotely there for over the past one year, under the able guidance of AFS India Staff. It has made me feel like a part of the family and it has helped me grow professionally.

Joining AFS India office as an intern opened up more horizons and gave me the opportunity to learn in depth about AFS.

I am a second-year undergraduate student at Ashoka University. Interning with AFS India has been a transformative journey that profoundly enriched my personal and professional life. The experience provided me with a profound appreciation for the mosaic of global cultures and enhancing my cross-cultural competence.

This invaluable experience expanded my global network, afforded me the opportunity to enhance my language proficiency and opened doors to exciting prospects.

My internship with AFS India has been a transformative journey. It has broadened my horizons, fostering cross-cultural competence and global awareness. I've honed practical skills in program management and event coordination while connecting with a diverse network of professionals.

This experience has not only enriched my personal growth but also ignited a lifelong passion for promoting cultural exchange and global citizenship. I'm now better equipped to contribute meaningfully to a more interconnected world.

DOMESTIC CLASS EXCHANGE Dolphin International School, Pulwama and Pathways World School, Gurugram Dolphin International School, Pulwama shares...

The Domestic Exchange Program conducted in collaboration with Pathways World School, Gurugram was an enriching and educational experience for the participating students of Dolphin International School, Pulwama. The primary objectives of the Exchange Program were to promote cultural exchange, interpersonal relationships, foster a global perspective among students, and provide them with an opportunity to experience a different atmosphere which was a contrast to the challenging realities of Kashmir. The atmosphere in Kashmir is such that every child sleeps with extreme uncertainty of waking up with a fear of violence. Children of Pulwama have been breathing in this air for over 20 years; the impact of which manifests in their interactions with themselves and their surroundings.

The 16 participants of Dolphin International School, Pulwama along with their teacher started their journey on 7 August 2023 for the program, which concluded on 13 August 2023. The Exchange Program with Pathways World School was a resounding success.

Despite the initial mix of excitement, nervousness & inevitable challenges, everything felt refreshingly different. It brought a noticeable shift in my confidence and communication. We enjoyed various classes, pottery being my highlight. The teaching approach emphasized hands-on learning.

Learning is more than absorbing facts; it is acquiring understanding.' - William Arthur Ward The world needs teachers who foster love, brotherhood and care amongst students. The Educators need to have a global outlook, secular mindset and be free from any biases and prejudices to effectively guide diverse groups of learners, different cultures, pupils with migrant backgrounds and varying abilities. They need to have knowledge of Intercultural Learning and how to address controversial issues in the classroom.

'There are only two forces in the world, the sword and the spirit. In the long run, the sword will always be conquered by the spirit.' Principal Napoleon Bonaparte It is the spirit which needs to be nurtured. They need to be equipped with the tools of Experiential learning, teaching with activities, use of competency-based methods. I believe the exchange programs run by AFS, ICL training and Effect+ programs conducted by AFS address this need to educate the educators to a great extent.

The exchange programs are an ingenious way of bringing together and nurturing the spirit of oneness amongst children from all nations, religions and social strata. Another aspect of AFS programs is the community services which makes the students aware about the problems faced by their communities and the world at large, be it climate change, poverty, illiteracy, hunger or the lack of medical facilities. Through various programs they become more aware, sensitive and realize their own potential in solving them.

As I navigate the intricacies of Japanese life, my perspectives on the world are evolving, expanding, and blossoming like the sakura in spring.

In the heart of Japan, where tradition and innovation dance hand in hand. I've found myself embracing the concept of 'Ikigai', appreciating imperfection through Kintsugi, embracing mindfulness and learning from Bushido’s values. In this symphony of culture and self-discovery, I'm not just experiencing Japan; I'm growing through it.

From being a shy, introvert individual to becoming a confident, all accepting friendly personality. I still cherish all the unforgettable experiences and memories of my brief stay. AFS and all the vibrant personalities whom I met during the program still have a profound impact on me.

Dushyant Saraf AFS Year Program 2018-19, Russia During my study exchange year in Russia, I gained a deep appreciation for culture and diversity. Attending the school, I overcame language barriers and improved my Russian significantly. I realized how closely languages are tied to its culture.

I was placed with a warm host family. We shared countless adventures and experiences from walking around the woods, to swimming pool, skating, fishing and horse riding. It boosted my confidence, honed my skills, and encouraged global thinking through interactions with international AFS students.

SPONSORED STORIES AFS Global STEM Academies Europe | 15 July – 13 August 2023 The AFS Global STEM Academy Program to Europe from 15 July to 13 August 2023 to foster cultural enrichment, academic exploration, and personal growth among participants. The goal was to create an immersive experience that would broaden the horizons of young minds and inspire them to become more open-minded, resilient, and self-aware individuals.

The program took four Indian students to Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands, where they were exposed to diverse cultures, languages, and academic environments.

Throughout the program, the participants actively engaged with local communities, forming deep connections with people from various backgrounds.

One of the program's primary objectives was to facilitate cultural exchange and understanding. It also emphasized academic enrichment.

Participants were exposed to STEM-related activities like water management workshop, visits to prominent STEM organizations such as the British Petroleum office, European Union, Europe Space Academy and engagement with experts in the field.

Participating in the exchange program was life-altering. Stepping into the unknown, excitement and nerves entwined. It became an odyssey of selfdiscovery, cultural enlightenment, and academic revelation. It transformed and shaped my perspective and left an indelible mark on my life's journey.

YES Program 2023-24 | August 2023 Departures The Kennedy - Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Program for the year 2023-24 has commenced with great enthusiasm. In August 2023, 24 outstanding students embarked on a life-changing journey to the United States as part of this prestigious exchange program.

Out of the 30 students selected, a batch of 24 students departed for the United States in August 2023.

Their departures marked the beginning of an incredible adventure as they set off to experience American culture and education. Each of these students has been meticulously chosen for his/her academic excellence, leadership potential, and commitment to cross-cultural understanding.

Before embarking on their journey, all 30 students participated in a two-day comprehensive Gateway Orientation program. During the Orientation, the students received essential information on various aspects of their exchange program, including airport procedures, Host family integration, Program expectations and rules, cultural sensitivity, and emergency protocols. This orientation served as a vital preparation step, ensuring that the students were well-equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive during their exchange experience to handle the challenges and opportunities that awaited them in the USA. The KL-YES Program for 202324 is off to an exceptional start as these young ambassadors embark on this incredible journey.

We eagerly await the positive impact they will make both in the USA and upon their return to their home communities.

PROGRAMS AFS Host Students | Celebrations of Indian Independence Day Independence Day in India is a significant national festival celebrated on August 15 each year. It commemorates the country's liberation from colonial rule, and this year marks the 77th anniversary of independence. The day serves as a tribute to the courageous freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the nation. The Prime Minister of India raises the national flag at the Red Fort, symbolizing the country's sovereignty.

'On Independence Day, my school organized an event where we held the flag and learned about the history of Independence. We had the privilege of having Sunny Deol, a Bollywood actor, at our school.'

Brothers and sisters, people of all ages celebrate Raksha Bandhan with abundant zeal and enthusiasm in India.

'It was my host brother’s cousin who tied Rakhi on my wrist. It was a very enjoyable and unforgettable time. I was happy to receive a Rakhi, which signifies the unbreakable bond between siblings.'

PROGRAMS Atharva Chhabra | 4-week Summer Program of AFS Spain A glimpse of the experience of Atharva Chhabra, a student of The Emerald Heights International School, Indore who participated in the 4-week summer program of AFS Spain from 2 - 30 July 2023 This incredible journey has left an indelible mark on my life, and I wanted to express my gratitude for this opportunity. From the moment I arrived in Spain, I was welcomed with open arms by the local community and my host family. The warmth and hospitality of the Spanish people made me feel right at home, even though I was thousands of miles away from my own.

The academic aspect of the program was equally enriching.

Studying at Unamuno colegio allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of Spanish culture, history, and language. The professors were not only knowledgeable but also passionate about their subjects, making the learning experience truly engaging.

One of the highlights of my exchange program was the chance to immerse myself in Spanish culture. Exploring the vibrant streets of Malaga was an adventure filled with new Flavors, traditions, and experiences. Whether it was savoring delicious tapas, attending local festivals, or visiting historic landmarks like Seville, every moment was a captivating cultural exchange. Moreover, the program's emphasis on cross-cultural interaction enabled me to form lasting friendships with both locals and fellow exchange students from around the world. These connections not only enriched my time in Spain but also expanded my global perspective.

I must extend my heartfelt thanks to the AFS team for their support throughout my stay. Their dedication to ensuring a seamless and enriching experience was truly commendable, and I am grateful for their guidance and assistance.

In conclusion, my time in Spain through the exchange program has been a transformative experience that has broadened my horizons, increased my cultural awareness, and provided me with memories that I will cherish for a lifetime. I am confident that the skills and perspectives I have gained will continue to influence my personal and academic pursuits. Thank you once again for this incredible opportunity.

I look forward to sharing more about my experiences inperson and hope to continue fostering the bonds formed during my time in Spain.

STORIES Siddhant Shah | YES Alumni 2007 From A Student to A Global Citizen I am an AFS KL-YES Alumnus from 2007-08 Batch and was hosted in Bennington, Vermont, USA. The AFS program was a turning point in my life and it changed my perspective towards the world. I am now able to look at the world through a Cultural Lens which I never had before. Having been exposed to intercultural experience at such a young age shaped my personality and became an integral part of my beliefs and values. It instilled a sense of respect, tolerance, and open-mindedness towards different religions and communities and made me more independent, confident and empathetic.

AFS provided me with tools and opportunities to volunteer, create impact and become a Global Citizen. Supported by our Host coordinator, my colleagues and I completed over 100 hours of volunteering during our exchange year. This experience instilled a deeper sense of purpose in my life. The joy and fulfillment of making an impact in the community is immeasurable. Since then, I have continued to volunteer with various NGOs, actively participating in community service clubs in my school, college and professional life. I also volunteered with AFS for a 10-day community service program in Kakelao village, Rajasthan, assisting 130 members of the Yale Alumni Service Corps from the USA in August 2014. I am currently working with an NGO dedicated to empowering underprivileged children through mentorship and skill development.

I became a Chartered Accountant and implemented projects in Saudi, UAE and Qatar, before I took a full time job in one of the biggest companies in Dubai, UAE wherein I was the IT Lead for Oracle Financials and Application Support for about 4 years.

Currently working as a Finance Consultant with various MNCs across the globe to help them implement ERP Financials and to guide them in streamlining their business processes using industry best practices. I am truly grateful for all the opportunities, experience, skill set and knowledge that I have gained as an AFS Alumnus, Volunteer and Trainer over the years.
