MESSAGE FROM THE FORMER DIRECTORS, AFS INDIA
It is a privilege to have been among the first employees of AFS India when it was officially established in 2006.
Over my 16+ years with AFS, I witnessed its remarkable growth from a small office set up by just three people, who purchased everything from the first computer to the office furniture, to a thriving organization with a dedicated team and strong volunteer network.
As a new Program Manager,
I learned and grew alongside our volunteers and alumni, building lasting relationships that strengthened further when I became National Director in 2009. Together, we overcame many challenges and achieved significant milestones with the unwavering support of AFS International, partner countries, and volunteers across India
One unforgettable achievement was during the COVID19 pandemic, when our volunteers worked tirelessly to ensure the safe return of over fifty hosted students before the nationwide lockdown.
As AFS India celebrates its 20th anniversary, I wish it continued success, growth, and impactful intercultural programs for years to come.
Congratulations to AFS India on celebrating an extraordinary milestone 20 years of fostering intercultural understanding, global citizenship, and meaningful connections across cultures
For two decades, AFS India has empowered young people to become active global citizens, creating lasting impact through its commitment to mutual understanding, respect, and peace.
It has been a privilege to be part of this remarkable journey since AFS India’s years,
I have had the opportunity to serve as a volunteer, Delhi Chapter President, mentor, Board Member, and Interim National Director. Each role has enriched my life, broadened my perspective, and reinforced my belief in the transformative power of intercultural exchange.
I am deeply grateful for all that I have learned and for the personal growth I have experienced through AFS. As AFS India marks this significant anniversary, I wish the organization continued success, growth, and impact as it advances its mission of building a more just, peaceful, and inclusive world for future generations.

TWENTY YEARS OF JOURNEY WITH THE VOLUNTEERS
Roma Shah Indore Chapter
My AFS journey began in 2013 when my daughter participated in a school exchange program to Italy, which sparked my involvement as a volunteer Since then, I’ve hosted students and volunteers from around the world, promoted AFS programs, and organized community activities as part of the Indore Chapter. Volunteering with AFS has been a deeply rewarding experience, helping me grow as a leader, develop empathy, and embrace new perspectives. Serving as Vice-President, President, and member of the Volunteers Think Tank (VTT) committee allowed me to contribute meaningfully to AFS India’s mission of education and intercultural exchange. Mentoring students and hosting exchange participants enriched my understanding of global cultures and strengthened my belief in diversity, acceptance, and empathy. The recognition of my work with the AFS AAI Outstanding Volunteer Award 2023/24 in Cebu, Philippines, was a proud and humbling moment that reinforced my commitment to continue fostering global citizenship and making a positive impact through AFS.
Meenu Raisurana Jamshedpur Chapter
My journey with AFS started in November 2009, when I went for the YES Panel interview in Kolkata along with my husband for Vyom. We were asked, “Whether your son gets selected or not, would you like to volunteer for AFS?” We agreed instantly, and that’s where our journey began. My dear husband has always supported me in serving as a volunteer, whether it involves sending, hosting, or any other volunteering responsibility. It is an enriching experience as a Chapter Head to watch exchange students enjoy our culture with such enthusiasm and awe. I also feel proud seeing our alumni grow and glow. AFS has given me the opportunity to reach out to people through community service, something I truly love doing. AFS has deeply transformed the way I see the world. It teaches me to appreciate diversity, respect different cultures, and communicate with an open mind. Through AFS, I have become more confident, independent, and empathetic someone who values global friendship and understanding. In the future, I hope to stay actively involved with AFS by volunteering in intercultural programs, helping new participants adapt, and promoting cultural exchange in my community. I want others to embrace global citizenship and continue spreading love, peace, and understanding to make the world a better place. So, walk together, talk together.
Shalin Dave Anand Chapter
My journey began 13 years ago when I was inspired by my son’s friend, an AFS exchange student to Japan, whose confidence and eloquence amazed me. I joined as a family volunteer in 2013, marking the start of an incredible chapter filled with learning, growth, and unforgettable memories. One of my most cherished experiences was being chosen as the chaperone for the KL YES Batch 2025–26, where I had the privilege of working with AFS India’s dedicated sending team, facilitator Sudha Ma’am, and YES alumna Riddhi Gupta. Guiding 25 bright young ambassadors from across India was deeply rewarding, and our bond during the orientation and journey to the U.S. felt like that of a family. Volunteering with AFS has made me more humble, broadened my worldview, and deepened my cultural understanding turning me from a father of two sons into a “global father” to many I’m committed to continuing my volunteer journey, supporting AFS India in its mission to build global citizens and promote intercultural understanding. Congratulations to AFS India on its 20th anniversary here’s to many more years of fostering peace and global connection!

Being part of AFS Intercultural Programs has been one of the most transformative experiences of my life. What began as an opportunity to volunteer has evolved into a journey of learning, growth, and belonging Over time, AFS has become my second family a global community that nurtures empathy, understanding, and connection across cultures. Through AFS, I have engaged with people from diverse backgrounds, gaining valuable insights into the importance of dialogue, respect, and collaboration. Each experience whether through hosting, participating in programs, or community service has deepened my appreciation of other cultures and helped me grow into a more compassionate individual. A constant source of inspiration in my AFS journey has been Mrs. Angela Roye, whose dedication, strength, and leadership embody the spirit of AFS and have taught me the value of perseverance and empathy. My involvement has also given me opportunities to serve communities across India and beyond, enhancing my ability to adapt and connect with people from all walks of life To me, AFS is more than an organization it is a global family united by the mission to foster peace, friendship, and mutual understanding through intercultural learning, and I am truly grateful to be part of this life-changing journey.
Rachna Babel Indore Chapter
Today, as the Vice President of the AFS Indore Chapter, when I look back at my journey of self-evolution with AFS, I feel immense joy, fulfillment, and gratitude. What began in 2020 as a school coordinator for IPS soon became much more than a role AFS turned into an emotion, a way of life that deeply resonated with my values as an educator and as a person. My journey is filled with countless memorable moments, from serving as the Chief Editor of Folklore History of India, a visionary project by Sumer Singh Sir, to participating in the AFS Homestay & Hungary Program 2025, which broadened my global outlook. Hosting the AFS Annual Volunteer Meet 2024 at the Indore Chapter remains another milestone close to my heart. AFS has truly transformed me into a more empathetic and globally minded individual, equipped with 21st-century skills and a strong commitment to intercultural understanding As a PEAK Certified Facilitator, I aspire to continue empowering others and creating meaningful impact believing that if I can bring even one positive change in a student’s life, my purpose will be fulfilled. Moving forward, I aim to deepen my engagement in community service, especially by supporting initiatives for underprivileged children, because every child deserves the chance to dream, to grow, and to shine
Before joining AFS, I was actively involved with JCI International, where my passion for social service and community engagement first took root. As a teacher in an English medium school, my connection with students naturally aligned with AFS’s mission, and it was one of my senior teachers an active AFS member who encouraged me to join this transformative organization. My most cherished memory with AFS is attending the Volunteer Meet in Delhi for the first time, where I interacted with volunteers from across India and gained a deeper understanding of AFS’s purpose of connecting lives and sharing cultures. Before joining, I was an introvert with limited interaction beyond my circle, but AFS transformed me into a confident communicator and leader, enabling me to guide not just my students but others toward global learning opportunities. As a Prime Graduate Trainer from JCI University, USA, I aspire to expand AFS’s reach by promoting its values across India and organizing training sessions that empower members to become creative, confident, and impactful contributors. I am deeply grateful for the guidance and leadership that continue to inspire my journey, and I remain committed to advancing AFS’s vision of intercultural learning and global citizenship.

For the past ten years, I have been volunteering and hosting with an intercultural exchange program that promotes global understanding and compassion. This journey has taught me that being a global citizen begins at home by opening our hearts and doors to people from different cultures. Welcoming international students and teachers into our home has been an immensely enriching experience for me and my family Each interaction has encouraged us to reflect inwardly before forming opinions about others, helping us recognize that everyone carries both strengths and imperfections. This realization has nurtured in us empathy, neutrality, and acceptance. What began as cultural exchange has evolved into a journey of personal growth and human connection. Over the years, these experiences have gifted me relationships that go beyond boundaries from being an elder sister to an Indonesian teacher to building deep friendships with volunteers from other cities. These bonds remind me that true family is defined not by origin but by understanding, respect, and shared humanity. This ongoing journey continues to inspire me to live with openness and celebrate the beauty of diversity.

The vision of AFS creating Active Global Citizens deeply inspired me to join the organization. Working with the Study Hall Educational Foundation’s Prerna Girls School, which empowers girls from underserved communities, I found my professional goals perfectly aligned with AFS’s mission of transforming the world by changing mindsets and fostering inclusive, sustainable societies. My most cherished memory with AFS is attending the Volunteer Meet in Bangalore, where meeting volunteers from across India and engaging with the AFS National Office and Board Members offered a beautiful blend of learning, sharing, and celebrating our shared purpose. AFS has broadened my cultural understanding, allowing me to appreciate global diversity while deepening pride in my own culture. Hosting and interacting with exchange students has been both enlightening and humbling Through AFS, I’ve discovered numerous opportunities for leadership and service, including my community project on Plastic-Free Periods, which was recognized at COP 29 in Azerbaijan. Being an AFS volunteer has made me more empowered, socially active, and responsible toward my community and the world truly embodying the spirit of “Walk together, talk together... then shall ye have peace.”

“Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” the world is one AFS family perfectly captures what AFS means to me. It is not just an organization but a beautiful, ever-growing family that celebrates diversity and helps young people experience the richness of global cultures. My journey with AFS began in 2019 when it was introduced through my school, and that year, our students participated in the Kakehashi Project. Watching those shy students return as confident, compassionate, and globally minded individuals left a lasting impression on me. One of my proudest moments was when President Diya Badgel invited me to serve as President of the Hyderabad Chapter a moment filled with honour and joy. AFS has opened doors for me to meet inspiring educators, volunteers, host families, and students from diverse backgrounds. What moves me most is witnessing how programs like YES transform young lives, empowering them to dream and achieve more. I still remember Diego, a student from the U.S. who came to Hyderabad his curiosity, openness, and love for Indian culture embodied the spirit of true global learning. I have also seen how Indian families, initially hesitant about hosting, go on to form lifelong bonds filled with affection and shared experiences. For me, AFS truly represents the essence of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam a movement that unites people beyond borders and reminds us that when we open our homes and hearts, we not only change others’ lives but transform our own.
AFS Ind ions across the country, g total of 19 AFS India Chapters came together to commemorate this remarkable milestone, making it a truly national celebration. The grand anniversary events were enriched by the presence of the AFS India Board of Directors and were celebrated in diverse locations, reflecting the reach and strength of AFS India.
Each chapter celebrated in its own unique way, engaging host families, schools, host students, alumni, volunteers, and well-wishers, all of whom form the backbone of the AFS movement. From meaningful gatherings and cultural exchanges to moments of reflection and joy, every celebration showcased the unity, warmth, and shared values that define the AFS community.
This milestone is not just a celebration of 20 years as an organization, but a celebration of the people who make AFS India what it is today, our committed volunteers, coordinators,

COMMUNITY IMPACT (ALUMNI DEVELOPMENT)
Alumni development within AFS Intercultural Programs India is a multifaceted endeavour aimed at maintaining connections, fostering lifelong learning, and empowering former participants to continue their engagement with the organisation and the broader community. Through various initiatives and resources, AFS supports alumni in their personal and professional growth, encourages them to apply their intercultural skills in their lives and careers, and provides opportunities for networking, collaboration, and leadership development. Alumni are invited to participate in events, workshops, and conferences, where they can share their experiences, exchange ideas, and contribute to the organisation's mission of promoting intercultural understanding and peace.
Additionally, AFS offers alumni-specific programs, volunteer opportunities, and online platforms to facilitate ongoing communication and engagement. By nurturing a vibrant and active alumni community, AFS ensures that the impact of its programs extends far beyond the initial exchange experience, enriching the lives of individuals and communities around the world.
ACHIEVEMENTS OF SOME NOTABLE ALUMNI OF AFS INTERCULTURAL PROGRAMS INDIA:

SOME COMMUNITY PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN BY ALUMNI OF AFS INTERCULTURAL PROGRAMS INDIA:
Alumni Ms. Rimsha Rahman (Batch 2018) and Ms. Sadia Naaz (Batch 2018) undertook a workshop, पाठ (Lesson), which focused on sustainable development with 40 students from 8th and 9th grade in School The workshop covered topics such as waste management, 3R's principle, and composite management along with instructing children with formal verbal and written communication. The workshop focused on local recycling and compost management methods to generate practical skills in students.
The workshop was conducted at Saint Dawood High School at Hafiz Baba Nagar, Hyderabad.
Through the workshop, the students learned about the UN SDG goals of sustainable development and ways to include it in their daily lives. The workshop spanned seven days and the group presentations were made to showcase the recycled articles from each participant.
The AFS IND National office in New Delhi and the alumni involved in the project also helped the school by providing a lap-size writing pad, an exam pad, a journal, and a calculator to the 40 participants.
Shahbaz Ali Khan and Akash B. (Batch 2018) organized a series of 3-day workshops on programming and robotics, called CodeBots. The CodeBots workshop was an off-shoot of the YES Alumni Grant Project 2023-2024. It was conducted at five schools in Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram with each session comprising 30 girls per school and in total of 150 girls, who primarily come from underprivileged backgrounds The highlights of the workshop were also covered by the local newspapers.
By educating women on robotics and coding, the workshop addresses the gender gap in the fields of computer science, engineering, and physics. Globally, 7% of women study STEM compared to 22% of men. Through the workshop, the alumnus trained the students to identify a local problem and design a tech solution using robots. By the end of the workshop, one of the groups designed an automated spice drying shield to protect the species drying on the terrace from rain. Another remarkable project worked for persons with disabilities by using sensors to detect obstacles and inform the user. The workshop dispelled the myths of gendered norms that discriminated against women and empowered them to get their hands on machines, coding, and robotics.
Salam M Abdul (YES batch 2016-17) started the “Library for All” initiative in his home country, India, after being influenced by his host school in the United States. LIBRARY FOR ALL is an initiative to create libraries in underprivileged schools to bring quality education to schools and to reduce inequalities in society The project mainly focuses on creating libraries by providing schools with library structures such as textbooks, classical works, indigenous works, etc. The outcome and impact of the project were that the students would often come and read for hours after their classes.
It exposed them to a world previously unknown to them The initiative developed a book reading habit among the students and it became a source of knowledge and learning for them. The project aims to create more libraries and engage students in discussions on career objectives and goals.
Prachi Pundhir YES Alumna 2015 -16 initiated Project Peepal, a project to promote sustainable lifestyles and economic markets for village produce It also promotes experiential nature and village tourism, wherein women's self-help groups prepare food for visitors. Additionally, under her project Projects Do Your Bit and Do Your Bit 2.0, she mentored students aged 1317 guiding them in creating climate action projects aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 13.
Inspired by DYB, she launched Do Your Bit Rikholi, a climate action initiative to address opportunities for the local community of Rikholi, her village. Project Peepal creates natural food products, providing a fair deforestation and restoring native ecology. Every monsoon season, Project Peepal organizes tree plantation drives in the Rikholi village temple hill, involving local villagers, school students, and volunteers The aim is not only to plant trees but also to ensure their survival by caring for them until they can thrive independently. Over the past two years, they have planted a total of 280 trees, and transformed six villages, five self-help groups, and approximately 130 families, intending to reverse migration and promote equitable wealth distribution in the Himalayan communities.
