Since December, roughly a dozen robberies have occurred in which casino patrons at Maryland casinos were surveilled as they exited with winnings and followed to their homes before being robbed by armed suspects, according to police and court reports in several and Maryland and Virginia jurisdictions. Renée Powell, a pioneering African-American golfer who often fielded racism during her years on the Ladies Professional Golf Association Tour, recently made history by becoming one of the first female members of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, which is considered the birthplace of the sport.

Last September, the R&A, which is based in Scotland, broke with 260 years of male exclusivity and decided to invite women to join.

Powell, 69, was among the first seven women to be named honorary members.

“This is an historic day for the Club and we could not be more proud also to welcome women who have distinguished themselves in golf over many years and have been great players and champions,” said R&A Captain George Macgregor. “They are extremely worthy additions to our roll of honorary members and will become ambassadors for the Club as they have been for the sport of golf throughout their careers.”

Powell began her golfing career early, having been introduced to the sport by her father, William Powell, at the age of 3. Such was the elder Powell’s dedication to the sport, that in 1948 he opened Clearview Golf Course, a 6,478-yard spread built from an old dairy farm in East Canton, Ohio. It was the first golf course to be designed, built, owned and operated by an African American, and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

By 12 years old, Renée Powell was playing competitively, and she also played college golf, first at Ohio University then at Ohio State, where she served as captain of the women’s golf team, according to a PGA of America biography.

In 1976, Powell became the second African American to play on the LPGA Tour—after Althea Gibson who joined in 1964. She played in more than 250 professional events, winning once, in Brisbane, Australia, according to The New York Times. Her best finish on the Tour was a tie for fourth at the 1972 Lady Errol Classic.

Her accomplishments were made even more significant given the daunting challenges she faced on the Tour—signed death threats, being denied boarding at tournament hotels, admitted to restaurants through the back door or excluded from pro-ams (professional-amateur games) because nobody would play with her, all due to the color of her skin.

“I think back to the times that as a young Black girl playing golf, there were many places I could not play or unpleasant situations when I was finally allowed to play, and now I belong to the most exclusive private golf club in the world,” Powell told the Times.

Since Powell left the LPGA in 1980, she has made significant contributions to the sport. Right after leaving professional golfing, she reached out to African embassies in the United States to launch her mission of spreading the gospel of golf to Africa. Upon returning to the U.S. in 1988, she began working to build inner-city youth programs, eventually establishing the Renee Powell Youth Golf Camp Cadre Program in 1995 to provide urban youth with an opportunity to learn and play the game of golf. Powell also strived to build a network of celebrity and pro-am charity events, and to tour HBCUs, where she worked to draw more people of color to the game.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Hundreds of people taunted each other on the grounds of the South Carolina Statehouse during separate rallies staged by two groups from outside the state.

Black Educators for Justice, based in Jacksonville, Florida, held its rally Saturday on the north side of the Statehouse, where the Confederate flag was removed earlier this month. Later, the North Carolina-based Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan held a rally on the opposite side of the building to protest the flag’s removal.

The S.C. Department of Public Safety estimated the crowd at approximately 2,000. Spokeswoman Sherri Iacobelli said five people were arrested and 23 people needed medical attention. A statement from Richland County Emergency Service said many of the 23 were treated for heat, but no specific number was given.

Several people carried the Confederate flag along the margin of the crowd at the black educators rally. About 40 members of the KKK marched up the Capitol steps and waved flags. Many in the crowd jeered.

Two men who were involved in a scuffle were led away by police.

During the rallies, Leroy Smith, director of the S.C. Department of Public Safety and who is Black, was seen helping a White man wearing a T-shirt bearing a swastika get out of the heat.

Gov. Nikki Haley earlier in the week urged residents to avoid the KKK rally, adding that doing so would honor the nine people shot and killed at a predominantly Black church in Charleston last month.

Ferguson Hires Black Police Commander as Interim Chief

By Jim Suhr Associated Press Ferguson leaders introduced a new interim police chief June 22, tasking the black police commander from Arizona with building trust between residents of the predominantly black St. Louis suburb and its mostly white officers, nearly a year since Michael Brown’s death roiled racial tensions.

Andre Anderson, a 50-year-old with a quarter century in law enforcement, starts in Ferguson on Thursday, essentially on six-month loan from the Phoenix suburb of Glendale, Arizona. Anderson had an inside track for his new, albeit interim gig — Ed Beasley, a black man recently hired as Ferguson’s interim

city manager — had been Glendale’s city manager.

Touted for his knack for community outreach in policing, Anderson arrives in Ferguson as it is still working to get its law enforcement house in order after a scathing U.S. Department of Justice report in March pressed for reforms. That critique cited racial bias and profiling in policing as well as a profitdriven municipal court system that frequently targeted blacks, who make up about two-thirds of Ferguson’s populace.

The Brown shooting touched off often-violent protests in Ferguson and a national “Black Lives Matter” movement seeking changes in how police deal with minorities.

Neither Anderson nor Ferguson Mayor James Knowles III, who is white, addressed specifics of the Justice Department report during a news conference Wednesday.

But Anderson acknowledged that efforts to mend fractured relations between Ferguson residents and their police — and improve the police force’s diversity — may take more than the six months he has been granted a leave from his Arizona job.

Anderson pledged to foster within Ferguson’s department the “respect,

cultural awareness and the professionalism this community deserves,” and he asked the populace to help him “set a course in the history books that clearly proves that peace prevails.”

New officers, he said, should “reflect the demographics of the community.”

“I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work,” said Anderson, who acknowledged that he hoped to be considered for the permanent chief’s position.

Several of Ferguson’s top officials — Jackson, the city manager and the municipal judge among them — resigned after the Justice Department report investigation initiated after the 18-year-old Brown was shot by Ferguson officer Darren Wilson. A St. Louis

County grand jury last November declined to indict Wilson, who later resigned.

The Justice Department also declined to prosecute Wilson, announcing that decision at the same time it released its report critical of police and court practices.

Knowles said Wednesday that in recent months Ferguson has adopted reforms, including hiring a new interim judge and revamping the municipal court system. He said Ferguson police were among the first in the St. Louis region to equip officers with body cameras in the wake of Brown’s death.

Ferguson administrators did not publicly detail financial terms of Anderson’s role as interim police chief.

Maryland was praised by the pro-gun control organization, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, on March 12 as having the seventh best violence prevention laws in the nation, because of the passage of the Fire Arms Safety Act of 2013 that mandated the fingerprint requirement.

Edwards said one of the main reasons there are so many guns circulating throughout the country is the advocacy and impact of the National Rifle Association, the nation’s

leading advocate for gun owners and a powerful lobbying organization on Capitol Hill. “I am taking a stand against the NRA,” the representative said. “I am not against the

Hunter said that “Hogan was directly attacked by his opponent for his NRA

endorsement, and yet he won.”

“It’s obvious that gun control doesn’t stop criminals,” she said. “Baltimore has some of the most restrictive gun laws in the nation and yet has one of the highest crime rates.”

James Dula, the president of the South County Democratic Club in Prince George’s County, agrees with Edwards that there needs to be more gun regulation nationally. “We are living in a time of domestic terrorism,” Dula said.

He said that congressional action on regulating guns is unlikely “because the Republicans in the House and the Senate don’t want to upset the NRA.” He said that gun violence has become too commonplace in our society. “There is a rise in homicides in Baltimore and Washington, D.C.,” he said. “We have young people killing young people and that needs to stop. In addition to focusing on guns, the congresswoman should prod her Republican colleagues to help young Black men get jobs and fight poverty.”

Why Ida B. Wells-Barnett Matters

By James Bentley AFRO Associate Editor jbentley@afro.com Everyone who had a question and went to Google to seek the answer on July 16th was treated to a Doodle that honored what would have been the 153rd birthday of Ida B. Wells-Barnett. “We salute Ida B. Wells with a Doodle that commemorates her journalistic mettle and her unequivocal commitment to the advancement of civil liberties,” Google wrote.

While not as well known as some of her contemporaries, WellsBarnett was a pioneer ahead of her time. She was a teacher, a journalist, a suffragist, and one of the leading activists at the birth of the civil rights movement.

She is remembered for her tireless fight against lynching in the South and being a founder of the NAACP. In “REMINISCENCES: CHAPTER 11. The N.A.A.C.P. Begins,” written

by Mary White Ovington in 1932 and published in The AFRO, Ovington wrote about the first conference to form what would become the

NAACP. Of Well-Barnett, she wrote, “Ida Wells-Barnett’s name was omitted in the [founding] committee’s list, brought before the conference. But she got it put on in the next few days.

And there it stands, where it ought to be.” Ida B. Wells-Barnett was born into slavery in Holly Springs, Mississippi, in 1862, and was the eighth of twelve children. Both of her parents were slaves, her mother a cook and her father a carpenter, until freed by President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. They would both die by the time she was 16 years-old due to a Yellow Fever outbreak.

Growing up in the South and witnessing the mistreatment of Blacks she felt as though education would be the key to a better life for her and her family. To that end she attended Rust College, an HBCU in Mississippi, started by the Freedmen’s Aid Society, for newly freed slaves.

After studying there and at Fisk University, she went on to become a teacher in Memphis. In 1884, seventy one years before Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus in

In her autobiography, {Crusade for Justice}, she describes the event “I refused, saying that the forward car [closest to the locomotive] was a smoker, and as I was in the ladies’ car, I proposed to stay. . . [The conductor] tried to drag me out of the seat, but the moment he caught hold of my arm I fastened my teeth in the back of his hand. I had braced my

feet against the seat in front and was holding to the back, and as he had already been badly bitten he didn’t try it again by himself. He went forward and got the baggageman and another man to help him and of course they succeeded in dragging me out.”

She filed a successful lawsuit against the railroad company that would later be overturned by The Tennessee Supreme Court. This incident would be the match that lit her writing career. As a teacher she was very critical of racism within the school system which she claimed contributed to the underprivileged conditions in Memphis’ Back schools.

This would ultimately get her fired from her position as a teacher and lead to her writing full time. She tackled civil rights issues and race issues and was published in numerous Black publications before becoming editor and co-owner of the Memphis Free Speech and Headlight.

Anti-Lynching Crusader,” published in the AFRO in 1972, Dr. Edgar A. Toppin cites Wells-Barnett as “the first to compile and publish statistics on lynching…”.

In 1909 she delivered those statistics to a conference on the status of the American Negro held in New York and according to “Crusader Tells Story of Crime,” published in the AFRO in 1929, she said “No other nation, civilized or savage, burns it’s criminals. Only under the stars and stripes is the human holocaust possible.”

Among her many publications documenting the South’s long sordid history with lynching and abusing Blacks are “Southern Horrors” (1892) and “A Red Record” (1894). WellsBarnett had many critics, including, at one point, The AFRO. In an article entitled, “A Chronic Fault Finder,” published in 1901, an AFRO writer castigated her for under estimating the number of Blacks in Baltimore at the time, denied that Baltimore Blacks were treated poorly in White owned stores and noted that some Blacks did own grocery stores contrary to Wells-Barnett’s reporting.

“Dr. George Cooper was a veteran administrator and fearless advocate who devoted his professional life to promoting academic excellence and student success,” said Bowie State University Provost Weldon Jackson. “He was particularly committed to the development of HBCUs and was prominent in his advocacy for the enhancement of these institutions. There is no doubt that George was a difference maker.”

Throughout his profession, Cooper stood as a beacon for Black students. Before his role with the White House, he served as the 10th president at South Carolina State University, was on faculty at Alabama A&M University and Tuskegee University, at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and in various other leadership positions with the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities - Council of 1890 Universities, and the National Collegiate Athletic Association. He also served on the HBCU and Limited Resource Institution Academic Advisory Group.

“Throughout his life, Dr. Cooper was

committed to promoting excellence, innovation, and sustainability across our nation’s HBCUs,” U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said.

“Dr. Cooper provided the wisdom and direction needed to form important partnerships between HBCUs and the federal government. He was staunchly committed to student development and success.”

Born in Tallahassee, Florida, Cooper received his bachelor’s degree in animal husbandry from FAMU, a master’s degree in animal science from Tuskegee University, and a doctoral degree in animal nutrition from the University of Illinois – Urbana.

President Obama said Cooper was

invaluable to the progression of HBCUs. “George’s passing is a great loss for my Administration, the HBCU and higher education communities, and for everyone that knew him,” Obama said.

A sense of his loss is reflected on social media by various mourners including dignitaries, businesses, organizations, colleagues and friends who posted their condolences and prayers for Cooper’s family.

“RIP to Dr. George Cooper, former SCSU president and head of WH office on HBCUs. Emily and I will keep his family and friends in our prayers,” Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.) wrote on July 20.

AFRO Prayers Go Out to Congressman Stokes

Congressman Louis Stokes is a political giant in Washington and across the Nation. He has made several contributions to Black causes and to the people of Ohio. Prayers go up for him, during this time, as he battles for his life.

COMMENTARY Justice Tech: Making Jails and Prisons Work President Obama’s impassioned call for criminal justice reform at last week’s NAACP national convention was the latest sign that bipartisan criminal justice reform is on the way.

In the midst of this movement is another, untold story about an army of entrepreneurs that is changing the way jails and prison work for the better.

When it comes to criminal justice reform, the inside game is just as important as the outside game. America locks up more of its population than any other country on the planet, and more of its Black population than South Africa at the height of Apartheid. Police commissioners brag about being “tough on crime” and cleaning up the streets. But the fact is that more than four out of ten people who are released from prison in the United States will return within three years.

Ben Jealous Our jails and prisons are failing at their primary purpose – rehabilitation – which means more crime, more violence, and more broken families. When our inside game is broken, our outside game gets even harder.

It doesn’t have to be this way. The way we treat people in jail and prison has a direct impact on whether or not they will reoffend. Yet over the past few decades, prison officials and the agencies that regulate them have not only failed to invest in necessities like effective educational programs and cheap phone calls; they have actively opposed those programs that work.

A new movement in the tech world is seeking to change that. A class of social justiceoriented companies – what I call “justicetech” startups – has emerged as a counterweight to the prison-industrial complex. The founders of these startups come from a circle of activists, former prisoners and social entrepreneurs who understand that sometimes change has to come from outside the system.

One of these startups is Pigeonly. In 2007 Pigeonly founder Frederick Hutson was sentenced to 51 months in federal lockup on marijuana charges (a venture that, it’s worth noting, would be legal in some states today). He witnessed the pain of isolation for the young men behind bars, and knew that regular contact with family members lowers the odds that an offender will return

to prison after he has been released. He also watched as prison officials across the country struck self-serving deals with private phone companies that resulted in wildly inflated prices for phone calls home.

Upon his release, Huston decided to start a company that would cater to the incarcerated directly. Pigeonly’s customers in federal prison purchase telephone time from their commissary, which usually charges inflated rates for long-distance calls. Pigeonly uses Google Voice-style technology to change the game so that all calls are “local”.

This process shaves 60 to 80 percent off the cost of calls in federal prisons. His service is soon expanding from the federal system to state prisons and jails, where savings promise to be even higher – in some jails, for instance, calling home can cost more than 18 dollars for a 15 minute phone call.

Another justice tech company is Jail Education Solutions. State funding for prison educational programs has continuously decreased since 1982, even as the prison population has swelled. It’s telling that most people who arrive in prison illiterate are illiterate when they leave.

Brian Hill, a recent business school graduate whose father taught community college classes at Folsom State Prison, saw this as an opportunity to innovate. His company provides jails with tablet devices that offer educational content. Working on a for-profit model that has inmates rent devices for a small fee, the tablets provide content like GED prep, vocational training and college courses.

The tablet service has earned the early support of reform-minded sheriffs who are eager to disrupt the cycle of people repeatedly moving in and out of jail. Inmates who take advantage of educational programming are 43% less likely to return within three years than those who do not. These sheriffs see tech-savvy educational offerings as a practical and affordable solution to recidivism.

As the long-overdue movement for broad criminal justice reform continues, we cannot forget the importance of what happens, or does not happen, inside jails and prisons. We need to improve our inside game as well as our outside game to ensure jails and prisons work, and these justice tech startups can help make that future come faster.

“One drowning is one too many. Knowing how to swim can be the difference between life and death, and formal swim lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88 percent,” said Debbie Hesse, executive director of USA Swimming Foundation. “Drowning is such a big problem, but it’s 100 percent preventable. The USA Swimming Foundation and Phillips 66 are educating communities on the opportunity to make learning to swim a life skill all children can easily acquire this summer.”

Researchers like Maria Burzillo have attacked the false belief that Blacks inherently fear swimming by noting the prevalence among several West African nations of both swimming and surfing before colonization. Additionally, scholars like Victoria Wolcott have documented how contested spaces of recreation prohibited Blacks from sharing beaches, public swimming pools, and even lakes alongside Whites. Their absence, however, prompted ridiculous theories that Black people were not as buoyant as other races and prone to drowning, or that an historic ban on instructing enslaved Africans to swim caused a generational resistance to being trained.

He also restated his opposition to the president’s health care plan, saying it is an instrument to redistribute wealth. He added that the U.S. is doing little to combat Islamic extremists.

Alexander said that funding school modernization has taken a creative turn, with public-private partnerships taking shape. She said Houston Elementary School in Ward 7 is being modernized with some funding from the Comcast Corporation.

Some Republicans, like former D.C. Council member Carol Schwartz and Clinton special prosecutor Ken Starr, who is now the president of Baylor University, think that the District should have voting representation in the Congress but not statehood. Schwartz and Starr believe that can be done by a bill in the House and Senate that is approved by the president.

Nelson Rimensynder, a longtime D.C. Republican activist, said the District should become a territory like Guam and American Samoa before it achieves statehood. Carson told the AFRO that he has no objection to the District becoming the 51st state, but there are issues that need to be

resolved. “There are a lot of things that D.C. doesn’t have when it comes to infrastructure,” he said. “For example, D.C. doesn’t have an agriculture infrastructure and that could be a real problem when it involves being a state.

People who support D.C. statehood need to think long and hard about things like that.”

Carson said he is aware District residents pay federal taxes but have no voting representation in the U.S. Congress. “Perhaps it would be better if the District could have voting representation in Maryland or Virginia,” he said.

Virginia Strickland lives in the District and attended the straw poll. She supports Carson’s presidential bid even though she is not a staunch Republican. “I consider the person I am voting for not the party, but I believe that Dr. Carson is a man of great intellectual depth,” Strickland said. “He has the ability to give thought to a situation and nobody’s doing that these days.”

Carson declared his candidacy for the 2016 presidential Republican nomination on May 4.

“He told me ‘Boy, you are here to get an education,’” Cummings said. “He told me not to get a girl pregnant, fall in love, and take over any buildings. He said that he was turning me over to those ‘Negro professors over there’ and he said to me, ‘Go in those walls and get blessed so you can bless’.”

Booker, elected to the Senate in 2013, said he appreciated the award given to him by the organization but that his generation has a lot of work to do when it comes to economic empowerment.

“African Americans, Latinos, and women need to have a seat at the table of power,” the senator said. “We need to create a community of folks that can expand opportunities for people further.”

A sustained standingovation took place when Jacqueline Ellis, a Hill staffer for the late Sen. Howell Heflin (D-Ala.), Major Owens (D-N.Y.), and chief of staff for Rep. Al Green (D-Texas), stood at the podium to speak.

In addition to her duties for members of Congress, Ellis has mentored scores of Black aides on Capitol Hill and is the founding member of the Organization of African American Administrative Assistants for Chiefs of Staff in the House.

Ellis is battling an undisclosed illness and asked the audience for their prayers.

Watt, who Cummings referred to as a “role model,” was praised as a boss and a mentor by U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. He said his work as a North Carolina representative in the House and at his agency “is about cultivating those who are following you.”

“We want those of you in this organization to think bigger and perform better than those of us before you,” Watt said.

Reid was cited by the lobbyist group for her work in trying to tell unbiased, accurate stories of African Americans at MSNBC while Moore, who works for female-owned lobbying firm TwinLogic Strategies, and Banton, an executive at the Lockheed Martin Corporation, were recognized for being trailblazing Black female lobbyists.

Anthony Collier of Texas Southern University and Khaleeq Everett of Marymount University were recognized as recipients of the Terri Grier Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The organization’s President Marcus Sebastian Mason said that his organization will never forget its true purpose. “You can keep doing good, while doing well,” Mason said.

Southpaw: A Bittersweet Boxing Tale of Redemption

Billy Hope (Jake Gyllenhaal) surmounted incredible odds en route to becoming the World Light Heavyweight Boxing Champ. After all, his prospects weren’t exactly brilliant, given how he’d been abandoned by his mother at birth.

But he was lucky enough to meet Maureen (Rachel McAdams) while they were being raised in an orphanage in New York’s Hell’s Kitchen. The two would not only fall madly in love but she would serve as the rock who kept his nose clean after a couple of brief stints behind bars.

As Billy worked his way up the boxing ranks, the childhood sweethearts married and had a daughter, Leila (Oona Laurence). And Maureen repeatedly inspired her husband to climb into the ring to channel his aggression positively, rather than entertain any ideas of blowing off steam in a self-destructive fashion.

By the time his record reached 43-0, Billy and family were living beyond their means in a gaudy McMansion where they conspicuously consumed the trappings of the nouveau riche: the flashy cars, the gaudy bling, the expensive champagne, and so forth. However, between his parasitic entourage and a shady money manager, Jordan Mains (50 Cent), it was also readily apparent that he’d have to keep winning bouts to maintain the decadent lifestyle.

Sure enough, in the wake of a terrible personal tragedy, Billy did lose the title belt and, faster than a Don King haircut, found himself broke and back on the rough streets he’d worked Photo credit Scott Garfield so hard to escape. Abandoned by his hangers-on and by his fair- Forest Whitaker and Jake Gyllenhaal star in “Southpaw” weather manager for the #1 contender (Miguel Gomez), Billy Gyllenhaal who deserved Academy Award nominations for both Nightcrawler (2014) and ends up at a gym in Harlem run by Tick Willis (Forest Whitaker), Prisoners (2013). He is again nothing short of mesmerizing, here, as a desperate, deposed, who is an irascible trainer reminiscent of the character played by Burgess Meredith in Rocky.

The salty veteran on the verge of retirement reluctantly agrees to take on the reclamation project disgraced champ on an appointed mission to reclaim his throne and his fortune.

Gyllenhaal floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee in this Oscar-quality tour de force. on the condition that the brawler adds a little finesse to his pugilistic repertoire.

F. Scott Fitzgerald famously once uttered, “There are no second acts in American lives.”

Excellent (4 stars) Well, he obviously never met Billy Hope who endeavors to make the most of a shot at Rated R for violence and pervasive profanity redemption in Southpaw.

J.J. Hairston Fuses Past and Present to Make Today’s Gospel

By Jannah Johnson Special to the AFRO J.J Hairston is the leader of a contemporary gospel choir known as Youthful Praise. The group has been very successful within the gospel music industry and worked with a great deal of titans within the secular and non-secular music industry such as Destiny’s Child,Coko, Myron Butler and Shirley

Caesar. The gospel group’s songs and album have frequently peaked at number 4 on the Billboard Music Chart and the group has been nominated for 2 Stellar Award nominations, a Soul Train Gospel award, and the GMWA award for Choir of the Year. They are currently preparing to release their next album, Amazing Love, later this year.

Hairston has been singing for most of his adult life but didn’t always have the intense passion for music he has now.

“When I was younger I was actually into poetry, but it wasn’t until a young guy from Connecticut where I moved who was the leader of TFT, which became Youthful Praise, asked me to be a part of the choir and I became a teenager that I really started getting passionate about singing,” he said in an interview with the AFRO. Youthful Praise has a unique sound, which Hairston attributes to their melding of the past and present, within the gospel music genre. “We have fused praise and worship and gospel while staying true to both. A lot of people feel like you have to stay traditional. We can’t alienate people who aren’t really traditional gospel music listeners. I want to keep gospel music alive and use my platform to push some younger artists into the spotlight” Hairston plans to “keep pushing I See Victory…and I’m going to make sure we push out individually our talented artists within Youth for Praise.” I See Victory, Youthful Praises’ last album, was released in 2014 and was created to inspire optimism in the face of trials within listeners. J.J’s favorite song off the album is You are Worthy because “it’s such an upbeat praise and worship something that just gives off the right vibes.”

J.J and his wife, Trina, are in the process of writing a book named Amazing Love to help counsel newlyweds and those considering getting married.

“J.J and I have been married for coming up on 21 years” said Trina “We got married really young, a year or two out of high school and we didn’t get any counseling and we didn’t really know what we were getting into by committing

to marriage. We went through different struggles but yet we survived through the test of time and through our faith, and through commitment to the marriage and each other we survived. This book is important because so many couples are looking for divorce as a quick fix and so many were taught how to get married but not how to stay married. Amazing Love is built around not only our love story but the belief that yes, marriage is supposed to last forever” Hairston said there are few reasons couples should get divorced. “Getting divorced is sometimes necessary in instances of abuse and things like that but otherwise I believe you can work through it whether its infidelity or financial issues if one of those two people is willing to work together the two of them can get through it,” he said.

When asked about the changing state of marriage in this country J.J said, “We have our own set of belief in our church but I’m also one of those guys that believes that you don’t have to change your beliefs for anyone. I want everyone to be happy with whatever they do but I believe in the Christian definition of marriage.”

Both J.J and Trina Hairston believe most couples skip a very important step before marrying today: counseling. “It’s crucial. JJ and I, we didn’t have any idea how to commit and submit to each other. When someone is fresh and just considering getting married you don’t need to teach them how to love each other because those feelings are already there but you do have to go over with them what’s going to happen.

When they don’t feel that love anymore, what going to happen when you walk in your house and you don’t like the person who you just committed to maybe two or three months ago?

A counselor will take you through those things and give you tools to fix your relationship. Amazing Love is one of those books that you put on your shelf that you can go back to three or four years later, it’s a reference,” said Trina.

Amazing Love is slated to be released in the late fall of this year.

CITY OF BALTIMORE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION Public Notice CHARM CITY CIRCULATOR The original intent of the Charm City Circulator (CCC) was to reduce traffic congestion, spread the use of the existing parking supply, tie growing communities together for residents and visitors, and connect transportation modalities by providing a safe, alternative mode of public transportation while reducing automobile congestion and air pollution in the City’s Central Business District.

Funding for the CCC program was achieved by restructuring the City’s parking tax. While the CCC’s operating expenses have increased over the years, the revenue derived from the parking tax adjustment has remained stagnant. In addition, issues with the supplier of the initial CCC fleet have necessitated significant unforeseen and unfunded expenditures. Subsequently, the CCC is operating at a deficit and will be for the near future.

In an effort address this deficit and maintain our goal of traffic mitigation, it is proposed that the CCC system be restructured. Through this process, CCC operations will be adjusted to make the program sustainable while continuing to meet ridership needs. Adjustments to the program include: *Elimination of the Banner Route * Federal grant funding for the Banner Route has ended. Commuters can utilize MTA Local Bus Route #1 to access Fort Avenue and Fort McHenry. *Implementation of uniform operating hours for all routes: *Monday through Thursday 7:00 am - 8:00 pm *Friday 7:00 am - 12:00 am *Saturday 9:00 am - 12:00 am *Sunday 9:00 am - 8:00 pm *The Orange Route will be modified and the following stops will be eliminated: 207, 209, 210, 211, 212, 213, 226, 227 *The following Orange Route stops will be added: Fayette Street at Poppleton Street, Fayette Street at Fremont Avenue, Fleet Street at Exeter Street, and Central Avenue at Bank Street *The Green Route will be modified and the following stops will be eliminated: 101,104, 105, 106, 107, 108, 109, 110, 111, 112, 113, 114, 116, 119, 120, 121, 122, 123, 125, 126 *The following Green Route stops will be added: Fayette Street at Colvin Street, Fayette Street at Holliday Street, Fayette Street at St. Paul Street, Baltimore Street at Calvert Street, Fleet Street at Exeter Street, Fleet Street at Caroline Street, Fayette Street at Wolfe Street (eastbound), Washington Street at Jefferson Street, and Madison Street at Wolfe Street *Purple Route Northern Extension will be implemented The majority of the proposed changes are scheduled to take effect on July 20, 2015, except for the Purple Route Northern Extension which is expected to occur in the Fall of 2015. Obituary

Thaddeus P. Mitchell, Sr.

Thaddeus Mitchell, “Mr. Mitch” as he was affectionately called, died quietly on April 17, 2015 at the Future Care Canton Harbor Nursing Home after a struggle with lung cancer and pneumonia. He was formerly a resident at Waters Towers 1400 E. Madison, Baltimore.

Thad was the fifth child born to William, Sr and Lillian (Anderson) Mitchell in Topeka, Kansas on March 5, 1923. He attended Topeka public schools. He is preceded in death by his parents and his siblings – William Jr, Genevieve Irene, Edwin, Cecil Anderson, and Opal Louise Reed.

In the 1940s he joined the Merchant Marines and traveled the world. He worked as a ship builder during most of his career. He was also

affiliated with the Coast Guard for a time.

He leaves behind a son, T. Paul Mitchell, Jr. originally of Baltimore but we are unsure of where he is currently. Any help finding him to let him know about his father would be appreciated. He also leaves behind a niece, Cynthia (Reed) Eubanks (husband Willone, their children, grandchildren and one great-grand child), and a brother-inlaw, Robert E. Reed, all of Lawrence, Kansas.

Thaddeus will be laid to rest later this year at Arlington National Cemetery.

A memorial service is planned for July 27th, 11a.m. at New Waters Towers Apartments, 1400 East Madison Street, Baltimore, Md. 21205. Condolences to be sent to the apartment complex in care of Ms. Betty Cornish.

Indictment in Baltimore CVS Fire Set During Riots

The United Way of Central Maryland announced $8.27 million in funding of grants and other community investment. The funding will be used to help families in Baltimore County, Carroll, Harford and Howard counties and Baltimore City. “Thanks to the generosity of local companies, foundations and individuals, we are able to continue our important efforts to change the odds for families and communities facing poverty,” said Mark Furst, president and CEO of United Way of Central Maryland, in a statement.

The money has already been earmarked for several initiatives across the region with a focus on connecting citizens to basic human services and putting families on the path to stability.

The United Way of Central Maryland has awarded 59 operating grants, totaling approximately $1.36 million, to organizations delivering critical basic needs services

in the kid’s play area, sip coffee in the adult lounge or surf the web using the free wi-fi.

It’s all part of Pinnok’s plan to bring a bit of luxury to a part of the city that does not always get it.

has been allocated to the 2-1-1 Maryland United Way Helpline and the 2-1-1 Maryland system statewide.

2-1-1 is a confidential informational and referral service available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in 150 languages. The line can be called with requests for assistance with things like food, shelter, healthcare, utility bills and tax preparation assistance.

United Way also has committed $600,000 to its partner, the American Red Cross – Greater Chesapeake, to underwrite its year-round local disaster response efforts.

Another $150,000 has been allocated to this year’s Project Homeless Connect being held on September 24, where more than 1,500 clients experiencing homelessness are expected to

receive services onsite help from 150 providers.

United Way programs specifically targeting homeless and nearly homeless families include helping at-risk families stabilize before they become homeless, diverting homeless families from traditional shelters to permanent housing, accompanied by comprehensive case management and financial literacy, asset-building, budgeting and employment.

Earlier this year the group announced grants for community groups helping Baltimore recover following the riots in late April. The programs funded included ones for male mentoring, summer employment, arts programs for children and literacy programs.

Summer Sensation: Guessing the Next Big Team from the NBA Summer League?

With participating teams stocked full of rookies, early NBA players and dispersed veterans just trying to land a roster spot, summer play doesn’t make or break a ball club’s future but it’s a pretty accurate gauge of incoming talent and who’s next in line for stardom.

Play has been solid so far despite the pressure on the incoming rookies to up their games and showcase their NBAlevel skills. With summer play ended as of July 20, the AFRO Sports Desk decided to conclude their two-week review of which team has shown the most promise over the early weeks of July.

Riley: I was secretly hoping the Minnesota Timberwolves would’ve taken the cover off of sophomore forward Andrew Wiggins and added him to the collection of fine talent that the club has quickly amassed over the last two seasons.

Continued from D1 When I came over here, I realized with the dense population that a laundromat would do very well,” Pinnok said,” in an interview with the AFRO. He examined some of the existing laundromats in the area and saw that many were cramped and run down. He said many had old, dilapidated machines and no air conditioning.

“It seemed to me that the operators kind of took the customer for granted,” he said. “The conditions were perfect for somebody to come and put a nice facility in, where people could enjoy the laundry experience while taking the chore element out of it.”

Pinnok opened his first laundromat at 4623 Bowleys Lane, just three blocks away from his current place on Moravia Road. He says they were so successful that they quickly outgrew the

place. The new location is 10,000 square feet, which Pinnok says makes it the largest laundromat in the state and the third largest in the country. They also have almost 300 machines, so that customers never have to wait.

“This kind of facility you normally would find in a very high income, upscale neighborhood --the hardwood floor, the granite. People stay away from making this kind of investment in the inner city. We decided that we were going to show the community that we believe that they like nice things too,” Pinnok said.

“We actually pride ourselves in customer service,” said manager Thelma Washington. “If you walk in the door and you need help, we can see that you need help. The attendants are usually right in front.”

Washington says she has never managed a laundromat before, but she loves it.

“It’s working with the people, being able to give back to the community. We have people in the area who actually felt that there was nothing here for them to look forward to as far as having a nice clean place,” she said.

“When we first started, people were like ‘why would you put a place like this in this neighborhood?’”

She said that children from the community even come in to use the quiet area to do their homework.

“We actually have people that say “can we sleep here?

Can I take the children’s area home. The people are grateful. A lot of them bring their friends with them.”

For Pinnok, the Laundromat is about more than just running a successful business. It is about forging ties to the community.

“Nothing brings me more joy than when a customer comes to me and says thank you for

Wiggins wasn’t the only young Minnesota player to get shelved as center Gorgui Dieng and swingman Shabazz Muhammad only practiced with the team during mini-camp but didn’t suit up for the summer. It didn’t matter, as the club’s young foursome showed that it will definitely be a force to be reckoned with as the quartet matures.

Towns’ ability to shoot from range, post, rebound and block shots was on full display while LaVine’s early domination in only two games (22 points, 7.5 rebounds per game) was enough for the Timberwolves’ brass to sit him the remainder of the tournament. And don’t forget that 2010 draftee Nemanja Bjelica will finally join the team this season and he’s fresh off winning MVP of the Euroleague last year.

Look out for Minnesota.

Green: The Los Angeles Lakers have been flat out horrible over the past few regular seasons but their summer season team was really good in 2015. Sophomores Julius Randle and the surprising Jordan Clarkson make for a nice point guard/big man combo while the draft’s No. 2 overall pick, D’Angelo Russell displayed the poise of a big league baller.

Russell didn’t shoot well at all over the last two weeks, but the talent is definitely there. Russell’s shot will fall eventually as he develops as a shooter, but his defense, passing and moxie are already NBA-ready.

Randle showed some rust as he arrives back from a broken leg but his rugged and tough play in the post will only get better as he gets more comfortable. Clarkson might be ready to rip up the league as he showed some further polish after a terrific rookie season.

At 6-foot-5, Jordan can handle the ball, shoot it and dunk with ease. He’ll be a terrific fit alongside Russell and Kobe Bryant next season. The Lakers are on the road back.

Riley: If this is coming down to which team will arrive the soonest then hands down it has to be Minnesota. The Wolves already have an established point guard/center combination in Ricky Rubio and Nikola Peković who have been pretty good for Minnesota so far. Now, when you sprinkle in contributions from the rest of the roster the Timberwolves have a chance to be one of the youngest and deepest rosters in the Association.

Another year with famed veteran Kevin Garnett barking commands and breathing life into the youngsters won’t hurt at all, and we still don’t know if 2013 top overall draft pick Anthony Bennett will ever become a player or not. He could be the wildcard for a young Minnesota team because if he ever becomes half the player that he was drafted to be then Christmas will definitely come early for the T-Wolves.

Green: Minnesota definitely has the assortment of talented bodies to boast about a bright future, but all the Lakers needed was a couple of young pieces to build around. The allure of the Lakers’ legacy as well as beautiful Los Angeles will always be enough to position the team as players in the free agency market. Their three-way core with Clarkson, Russell and Randle will be enough to motivate Bryant into having some patience, but the core should be talented enough for the Lakers to creep back to respectability.

Minnesota just doesn’t have the history of success like L.A. does and you can’t ignore L.A.’s penchant for making splashes in free agency. The Lakers may not have the roster right now that makes you gush about them, but their core, prestige and ability to attract free agents should make them a major player sooner than the Timberwolves.

Administration estimates that there is at least $9 million worth of damage throughout the city. The cost to Baltimore in lost tourism revenues is projected to be even higher.

Artscape is an annual festival that began in 1982 and has become the largest arts festival of its kind in the U.S., hosting over 400,000 visitors over a 3-day period.

This festival boasts international and local genres of visual arts, multi-media, opera, theater, film, dance, food vendors, carnival rides, comedy, music, and most any thing to do with the expression of the arts.

One major source of musical entertainment was held at Artscape’s Main Stage, where singer, songwriter, music producer, funk bandleader and all-around legend George Clinton appeared with Parliament Funkadelic, to what seemed like a human sea of adoring fans.

The band electrified the hot mid-summer air with old school style hip-funk music, which drove fans to dancing, screaming, and yelling. When Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic hit the stage a “hot soul dish” of happy times is served.

The center is designed to promote education, leadership and extra curriculum for Black youth. In addition to classes, there is also a camp with free breakfast and lunch provided.
