Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake joined local residents Sept. 9 to debut the newly restored community basketball court at Easterwood Park Recreation Center. Renovations were made over the summer thanks to a partnership between Under Armor’s Win Baltimore Initiative and the NBA. The Baltimore Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority recently held the Murphy Memorial Golf Classic Scholarship Benefit at the Forest Park Golf Course. The annual event, which celebrated its tenth anniversary, was renamed this year in honor of Delta founder Vashti Turley Murphy. The proceeds of the fundraiser provide four-year scholarships to youth in the Baltimore area.

Baltimorean Ruth Ross, the daughter of Herbert Briscoe and Mary Olivia Peaker, graduated from Frederick Douglass High School, attended Cortez Peters Business School and began her career in the Department of Social Services. At this multi-generational occasion, which consisted of well wishes from far and near, her daughter, Laverne C. Johnson and son Kendall, husband Norman Ross (a church musician) her brother, Howard L. Tutman Jr, 29 Grand Polemarch of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, and wife Carolyn were among the many greeters and speakers who rendered eloquent remarks about the honoree. Hugs and kisses were the order of the day as Mrs. Ross continued to smile and swaying to one of her favorite selections, “Ever Praise is to Our God” by gospel artist Hezekiah Walker. An atmosphere of pleasure and happiness was evident. She was also an active choir member at Holy Trinity Church and socially involved with many causes. Mrs. Ross attributed her longevity to a family of long lives and God’s blessings. Her mother lived to be 92 and her grandmother 102 years old. She has two living cousins in their 90’s.

On Aug. 26, when Baltimore City and County students were making their way to school for the first day of the fall semester, these retired educators played hooky. They also played cards, danced in lines, spent some money and had a meal together. A standing room only retirement ceremony July 26 heard high praise for Col. M. Tia Johnson, the first AfricanAmerican female to attain the rank of colonel in the U.S. Army’s Judge Advocate General’s Corps. Much of the praise of Johnson came from Robert S. Taylor, Defense Department acting general counsel and former general counsel Jeh C. Johnson. “Tia was the lawyer advising the top lawyer in the Department of Defense,” Johnson said, praising her intellect and moral courage. The retiree thanked “those who came before, on whose shoulders l stand,” and concluded her remarks by presenting to her mother the Congressional Gold Medal awarded posthumously to her father, Russell W. Johnson, recognizing his service as an “original Montford Point Marine.”

Negro League Legends Hall of Fame (NLLHOF), founded by Dwayne Renal Sims in 2003, celebrated its 10th anniversary with two events: the unveiling of the new NLLHOF exhibit at the African American Civil War Museum and Memorial on Aug 23. The event was hosted by the founder, Frank Smith and the Negro League Baseball All-Star East/West Vintage Game that celebrated the 80th anniversary of the Negro League Baseball All-Star Game at the Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium, College Park, Md. on Aug 24. The Women in Military Service Memorial was the site of the official promotion ceremony of Col. Patrick Sargent to rank of brigadier general. Lt. Gen. Patricia Horoho, Surgeon
General of the U.S. Army, officiated. Following the reading of the promotion order and the administering of the oath of office, Sargent was presented his general’s belt, pistol and plate with star appended. The ceremony concluded with the singing of the Army Song followed by a reception.

The play 1001 Black Inventions was presented in the sanctuary of Greater Mt. Nebo AME Church on Sept. 15. The drama, presented by the Bowie, Md. church’s Deaf Ministry, Christian Education Ministry and Youth Ministry, shows a typical American family attempting to survive in a world without inventions created by Africans and African Americans. Church members and other guests filled the sanctuary and enjoyed a five-scene production that depicted various Black historical characters. It was organized by Dr. Ann Powell, Loretta Lacy and Paul Martin and hosted by the Rev. Carlos Perkins Rev. Jonathan Weaver of gives the welcome Greater Mt. Nebo and the church’s first lady.
