FEATURE OF THE SEASON

Giants in the Shadow of Kilimanjaro The Perfect Frame How Amboseli's dry season delivers Africa's most iconic wildlife backdrop. August through October is when it's at its best. Why the dry season changes everything Amboseli sits in Kilimanjaro's rain shadow, so for much of the year it's dusty, sparse. That's what makes this stretch worth it. As the swamps shrink, elephants crowd around what water is left, often with the mountain sitting clear behind them instead of buried in cloud. It's the window photographers plan their year around. More than a mountain view Some of Amboseli's elephant families have been studied for over 50 years, and they're unbothered by vehicles — sightings feel close and slow rather than rushed. Matriarchs leading their herds, calves a step behind. Lion, cheetah, and 400-plus bird species round out the season, but it's the elephants that carry it. When to go Clearest skies of the year, least rain, best odds of Kilimanjaro showing itself. Early morning still matters most before the heat haze softens everything the camera's trying to catch. The takeaway This isn't just a wildlife season, it's a landscape one. The animals and the mountain end up sharing the frame in a way that looks composed, even though nobody's arranging it.

The house features a striking double-volume stone atrium, comfortable living areas, a private pool and landscaped garden. A new glass conservatory brings in natural light and expansive views, creating an elegant setting for relaxed dining. Guests can also enjoy private in-villa dining, thoughtfully prepared by the chefs and served by a personal villa attendant. Important Update: The minimum occupancy for Segera House is now based on 4 adults.

SAFARI FEATURE BEYOND THE SERENGETI Discovering Tanzania’s Southern Safari Circuit Tanzania’s Northern Circuit may have the fame, but its southern parks are quietly becoming a favourite for travellers looking for something different. Nyerere, Mikumi and Ruaha offer vast landscapes, fewer vehicles and a slower, more intimate safari experience. MIKUMI: SAFARI MADE ACCESSIBLE Just a few hours from Dar es Salaam, Mikumi National Park is particularly appealing for travellers combining a safari with Tanzania’s coast. Its accessibility makes it easy to pair with **Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar**, creating a simple bush-and-beach itinerary. A DIFFERENT KIND OF SAFARI In Nyerere, wildlife viewing extends beyond the traditional game drive, with boat safaris along the Rufiji River. Further west, Ruaha delivers dramatic landscapes, baobabs and expansive wilderness. The Southern Circuit may not have the celebrity status of the Serengeti, but that's precisely its appeal. Less crowds. More space. A different side of Tanzania This season, perhaps it’s time to look beyond the usual safari route.

Travel FYI Peak Season Is Here: The Fastest Way to the Mara With the Masai Mara's high season (July–October) now underway, it's the perfect time to remind travellers why flying beats driving. All scheduled Nairobi–Mara flights depart from Wilson Airport, taking just 45 minutes in the air. Door-to-door check-in through lodge transfer — runs roughly 2 to 2.5 hours, compared to 5 to 8 hours by road. That's more time in camp for the game drives that make peak season worth the trip. Safarilink and AirKenya offer the most frequent daily departures, while Governors' Aviation is the specialist choice for travellers heading to the Musiara region. During the high season, both Auric Air and Coastal Aviation add a midday flight to handle passenger volume Serengeti–Zanzibar link (bush-to-beach) Auric Air and Coastal Aviation both fly direct Serengeti–Zanzibar routes, with Auric Air running daily direct flights from Seronera and Kogatende, making it possible to go from a sunrise Great Migration game drive to a sunset dhow cruise in under two hours

Destination Feature MURCHISON FALLS Uganda's original wilderness At nearly 3,900 square kilometres, Murchison is Uganda's largest and oldest park savannah, riverine forest, and the Nile itself, all in one place. Four of the Big Five roam here, alongside the rare Rothschild's giraffe, with chimp tracking next door in Budongo Forest. One stay covers it all: sunrise game drives, an afternoon Nile cruise past fifty-strong hippo pods and waterside elephants, even a dawn balloon ride over the Albertine Rift, one of only two parks in Uganda offering it. The falls themselves The boat cruise to the base is the trip's centerpiece: the river narrows, the current quickens, the roar builds until you're beneath the full force of the Nile punching through rock. For a different angle, hike to the top, where the gorge's violence is even closer and the view opens over the plains beyond. Getting there, staying well About five hours by road from Kampala (with fly-in options from Entebbe), through landscape that shifts from green hills to dry acacia country. Stay in Nile-front lodges with infinity pools, or smaller tented camps tucked into the bush — a wider range of styles than most under-the-radar parks can offer. Murchison hits a sweet spot: spectacular enough to feel like a bucket-list moment, still far enough off the Kenya–northern Tanzania circuit to feel like discovery. It's the perfect next chapter for travellers who've done the Mara or Serengeti and want East Africa to surprise them again, no Kidepo-level commitment required. Kogatende, making it possible to go from a sunrise Great Migration game drive to a sunset dhow cruise in under two hours

Myths & Misconceptions

Myth: "Kids can't do safaris." It's a common assumption, but far from a blanket rule. Many camps actively welcome families, with kid-friendly activities like junior ranger programmes, shorter and more flexible game drives, and guides skilled at keeping younger guests engaged. Age minimums do exist, but they vary widely by lodge and even by activity. A camp might welcome toddlers onsite while setting a minimum age for game drives or walking safaris. The real rule isn't "no children allowed," it's "check before you book". The right camp can turn a family safari into one of the most memorable trips a child ever takes.
