FANSHOES: COLLEGIATE FOOTWEAR FOR FANS giate, and pro-sports industry. Due to the many variations of national sports, the market is there for innovation, new consumer products, and new start-up businesses. That kind of an environment creates market receptiveness. This is what prompted me to see if I could come up with a product that could complement the others on the market. I did not want to do the same thing, but something which could go-hand-in-hand with other products used by the many sports fans in the U.S. That is what I set out to do and here we are today with the potential to be in about 1,200 stores nationwide in 2012.

I have learned that there is no substitution to hard work and dedication. Not even money can replace that. That’s one lesson which has stuck with me. I already considered myself a hard working person. But to be a start-up business person takes another form of hard work, which comes in the form of working smart and maximizing time and also being fully dedicated to the cause. Starting a business you have no experience in, neither do your partners, nor your investors, is a very, very risky move to say the least. But if you are willing to learn, there are many people out there with the experience, which you can learn from. But you have to be dedicated. There is no other way around it.

will take to make it successful. So if you are asking me now if I would trade in a start-up business life to college, then hands down, I will say emphatically YES. And I would exchange my college tuition to shadow a very successful business mentor.

President Mills meets with President Obama in Washington DC May 2012

On March 8, 2012, His Excellency, John Atta Mills, President of Ghana, visited President Barak Obama, at the White House. During the visit, both Presidents expressed their adoration for each other’s committment to diplomacy. President Obama, who officially visited Ghana in July 2009, making it the first African country he visited during his presidency, labelled Ghana as a “wonderful success story” due to its non-violent election proces, strong foreign investment, and increases in food productivity and food security. President Mills expressed his gratitude regarding funding from the Millenium Challenge Corporation and reassured the President that Ghana would continue to be the leader in Africa, promoting democracy and peace. After meeting with President Obama, President Mills met with other U.S Officials. Article Written/Photos Taken by: George Bright-Abu, Afrikan Post

Space Shuttle Discovery Lands in Virginia

(CNN) — The space shuttle Discovery landed at Dulles International Airport outside Washington on April 17th after a series of nostalgic fly-bys on the back of a NASA Boeing 747, bringing whoops of pride and tears to the eyes of space fans and astronauts alike.

The flight took the shuttle from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center to the Washington area, where it will spend retirement as a museum piece at the Smithsonian Institution’s air and space facility in Chantilly, Virginia, near Dulles.

becomes more a part of history. In 30 years of flying, there were grand accomplishments and heart-wrenching tragedies. A space flying machine with wings, it was like nothing ever built.

But dwelling in that past would be a mistake, Lindsey said.

“We’ve got to move on; we’ve got to make sure that spaceflight doesn’t die in this nation,” he said. “We still have (the) space station going, but if we don’t get ourselves heavy lift, get going with exploration or part of what I’m working on — the commercial program — then we risk losing this as a nation, and I don’t want to do that.”

Anyone venturing overseas for the Olympics and fearing the weird and wonderful world of British cuisine, worry not! McDonald's will temporarily open its largest-ever restaurant in London to cater for burger-loving sports fans. The mammoth fast-food haven -- which will be open for six weeks -- will be half the size of a football field, seat 1,500 and employ 2,000. Bizarrely, the Daily Mail says hopeful employees auditioned for jobs and were rated on their politeness and ice cream serving skills. More than 3 million people are expected to visit -- that's a helluva lot of burgers and fries.

In some ways, the past is meeting the future. KELEWELE: LEARN HOW TO MAKE A TASTY AFRICAN DISH COURTESY OF THE CITY OF ALEXANDRIA LIBRARY May

2012

Page

In March 2012, the City of Alexandria kicked off its “All Alexandria Reads 2012” program, a program creatively designed to encourage reading and dialogue throughout the city. This year, the “All Alexandria Reads 2012” theme is centered around Africa. William Kamkwamba, the author of The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, personally attended the kick-off celebration to discuss his book, which is the selected book for this year’s program. The “All Alexandria Reads 2012“ program will also include different cultural programs, including African storytelling, African safari paper-machie making, interactive programs with African instruments, tea tasting, and more. On April 11, 2012, at Beatley Central Library, “All Alexandria Reads 2012” taught the community the art of making kelewele, a flavorful African dish. The instructor, Evelyn Akiti, went step by step, teaching attendants ( including Ms.Eileen Bradley from Friends of Beatley) the art of making such a tasty and simple dish. Follow the instructions below to make tasty kelewele for your next event:

Step 1: Have the necessary ingredients: Ripe plantain (plantain is usually green. So get the ripe ones—they will look yellow and black); raw ginger; 1onion; Anise seeds, oil, crushed red pepper (ground hot pepper), and a pinch of Uda (hwentia) and a pinch of sea salt.

Step 5: Pour the contents of the blender into the bowl.

Step 6: Pour the chopped up plantain into the blended up mixture. Mix the plantain around with a big spoon. Make sure the plantain pieces are covered with the seasoned mixture.

Step 2: Slice the riped plantain lengthwise and remove the skin. Then cut the plantain lengthwise and then across, to create small pieces that look like small squares. Cut 6 plantains this way . Put the plantains aside in a bowl.

Step 7: Turn on the heated surface. Use a deep fryer or a hot pan on your stove. If using a deep fryer, pour a large amount of oil into the deep fryer, perhaps the whole bottle. Pour enough oil in to the deep fryer to cover the plantain. When you pour the oil into the deep fryer/pan, wait for the oil to heat up. Step 8: Now that the oil is heated up, put the raw seasoned plantain into the deep fryer basket .Lower the basket into the hot oil, close the lid, and let the ripe plantain fry.

Step 9: Let the plantain fry until it turns a golden yellow/slightly brown color. This will take a couple of minutes. Written By: Amy Ansong

Step 3: Peel the raw ginger ( 2-4) to remove the skin. Cut the ginger into a few small pieces. Do the same thing with the onion.

Step 4: Get a blender. Put the chopped ginger, onions, crushed red pepper (ground hot pepper), uda, anise seeds , a pinch of sea salt, and a little water into the blender. Put the lid on the blender. Plug the blender in, turn it on, and let the contents blend finely.

Step 10: Take the fried plantain out of the oil.

Step 11: Place a napkin onto a plate. The napkin will absorb the oil.

Step 12: Place the fried plantain on top of the napkin and open a can of peanuts to serve on the side.TA-DA! You now know how to make KELEWELE.

O

Dr. Miriam C. Gyimah

ver ago, during a telephone conversation with my mother, she asked me about how a particular situation in my life was going. All I heard come out of my mouth was “mom, I think God has set me up!” Immediately, we both burst out in laughter, I more so to keep from crying, and I went on to explain to her how I didn’t understand why after much prayer, meditation and waiting, the Lord had led me on the wrong path. I am sure I have quite a few witnesses who would agree with me here. The fact is that sometimes it seems the Lord sets us up rather than hook us up. For those who are not clear on the colloquial expression, a “set up” is when someone positions you for a downfall, as in a temptation where they know you will not be able to overcome, a clandestine arrangement that will lead to your arrest in case you are doing something illegal, or an orchestration of events that will surely cause you great difficulties or even embarrassment or shame. A “hook up”, on the other hand, is a favorable positioning as in an arrangement to get a good job or promotion, a wonderful mate, a connection to a great network that will yield a valuable advancement in your social, professional, or personal life. We expect the Good Lord, our Father who is in heaven to lead us not into temptation, but to deliver us from evil. But why then does it seem and feel that even with our focus and devotion to God and the things of God, even with prayer, meditation, fasting and even with waiting on him and clearly hearing His voice and seeing His hand direct us to a certain path, when we enter that path, we find that this is not a good path for us at all, that this is not a path on which we are thriving, but one on which we are stressing, suffering, fighting for survival. So we cry out loud, we weep silently, complain bitterly and wonder why after our pursuit of God’s voice and direction, He has led us on a thorny and painful path. He has set us up! In the Old Testament’s book of Ruth, Naomi, the mother-in-law of Ruth, once felt that the Lord had set her up. A true woman of God, Naomi sojourned with her husband and sons in search of greener pastures at Moab, but in the course of time, not only did they lose all their wealth, but

Is it a Set Up or a Hook Up? Her Page

her husband and sons died as well leaving her with nothing with the exception of her two daughters- in-law, Orpah and Ruth. Naomi declared to her daughters-in-law that “the Lord’s hand has turned against me” (Ruth 1: 13). With no prospects in Moab, Naomi returns to Bethlehem with Ruth, who refuses to be separated from her. Upon her return, a despondent Naomi tells her welcoming friends not to call her Naomi, but rather Mara (the meaning of Naomi is pleasant while Mara means bitter.), for “I went away full, but the Lord has brought me back empty”…The Lord has afflicted me; the Almighty has brought misfortune upon me” (Ruth 1:21). As we witness here, Naomi’s experience has changed not only her outlook on life where life is no longer pleasant, but it has also affected her sense of self and identity. The devastation of the loss of wealth, security, and the lives of her husband and sons have left her empty and bitter. To Naomi, God has not dealt well with her. But what Naomi perceives as a set up is indeed a hook up. It is nearly impossible to see the bright side of such devastation. We might ask, what is the purpose of losing one’s home and resources and what is the purpose and benefit of a woman losing not only her husband but her children as well? And how could a loving and kind God who is supposed to deliver us from evil allow such calamity to befall us? But what this story affirms is the mysterious ways of God, for God wanted to bless Naomi in a very special way that would not have been possible had she not returned to Bethlehem. The Lord had in store and had determined even before the birth of Naomi herself that she would be established in the genealogical line of King David and Jesus Christ, our Savior, an invaluable honor and blessing. It took the Lord taking Naomi and her family to Moab to acquire Ruth as a daughter-in-law, Ruth who it is said of that she “is better than seven sons” (Ruth 4:15). It is only understandable to God why He had such favor on Naomi and Ruth and why that favor was to be realized through such devastation. Thus, with the eventual marriage of Ruth to Boaz and the birth of their son Obed, the women celebrate and affirm to Naomi that God has indeed hooked her up as they say, “blessed be the LORD, which hath not left thee this day without a kinsman, that his name may be famous in Israel. And he shall be unto thee a restorer of thy life, and a nourisher of thine old age…” (Ruth 4:1516). Naomi’s tears are wiped away for not only has she been redeemed, but she has also been promoted because of God’s favor upon her life. In one of his sermons, Bishop T.D. Jakes said, “favor ain’t fair.” What Bishop Jakes expressed is that sometimes, it isn’t because of what you know, but who you know that will bring about your blessing,

your hook up. In other words, you may not be the most qualified person for a position, but because of God’s favor on your life, you will ascend to places that you never expected, and even exceed the expectations of those who know you. And so with the story of Joseph, Jacob’s favorite son, we learn that favor indeed isn’t fair. First, the favor Jacob had for Joseph was so unfair to his brothers that they hated him. The favor that God also had for Joseph and therefore his future, revealing through dreams that Joseph would be the greatest of all his brothers and that even his parents would bow to him, was so unfair and even objectionable to his brothers that they wanted to kill him, but instead sold him into slavery. What had Joseph done to deserve such favor and, even more, what had Joseph done to deserve such disdain? God’s and Jacob’s favor towards Joseph caused him a lot of pain. The set up is the pain and cruelty he suffered, that a young teenager who is in the will of God should be separated from those he loved and be made a slave. Yet, because God’s favor was on Joseph even as a slave, he became a great man in a foreign land. And yet again, even when he lived in this favor, he was once again set up as he was falsely accused and imprisoned simply because he wouldn’t sin against his God. One would ask, where was the favor of God upon Joseph when he had to spend years in prison for something that he didn’t do? But the set up, as painful as it was, was a hook up, for the Lord, wanting to position Joseph in an even higher place than his former role, reserved a prison cell for him, and it is from this cell that he emerged to his next promotion as second in command in Egypt. And it is while serving in this role that he is able to save the very brothers who sold him into slavery. We can refer to other biblical experiences such as David’s own. In the book of 1st Samuel, minding his own business in the field and quite satisfied as the shepherd of his family, David was thrown into turmoil when the Lord sent the Prophet Samuel to hook up David by anointing him king to replace Saul. But what sort of hook up was this? This seventeen year old shepherd now had to run from cave to cave, wilderness to wilderness, in fear for his life, because of a jealous and murderous Saul. For thirteen years, David was pursued and throne less until Saul finally died. Was he set up? One would argue that he was. But then again, in the mind of God, He was hooking David up. Two weeks prior to writing this article, I was catching up with a friend I had not spoken with in two years. She also asked me about that particular subject that I mentioned my mother inquired about. I confessed to my friend that sometime back I believed that the Lord had inexplicably set

May 2012

me up. But after months and months of questioning God and praying, the Lord directed me to 1st Samuel. I told her how repeatedly around 3 to 4 o’clock in the morning, the Lord will wake me up and direct me to read 1st Samuel. In the beginning, I would refuse and stubbornly stay in bed, although unable to fall asleep again. When I did obediently rise up from the bed and go to my prayer room and read, it took me a while after repeatedly reading that book before I understood what God was communicating to me. He was revealing to me that like David, though He had directed me on a certain path, my blessing was not to be gained overnight. It would take some time of struggle, frustration, and even tears before this hook up completely comes to fruition. Interestingly, as soon as I got off the phone with my friend, the Lord dropped in my heart that this subject was one to write about and share with others and at that moment, He also provided the title, “is it a set up or a hook up?” So here it is and here I stand. I stand understanding that the Lord truly works in mysterious ways. I stand understanding that the Lord’s favor rests on His children even when we don’t seem to see or feel it. I stand understanding that even with Naomi, Joseph, David and many others, the love of God and the promises that God Himself has determined for us will come to pass. Sometimes, it might appear that you have been thrown off course. It might appear that God has turned against you, that He has set you up. But then we have to pause and seriously question, is it really a set up or a hook up?

Wade's reputation took a nosedive when he announced last year that he planned to run for a third term even though he had revised the constitution to impose a two-term maximum. Some feared he would not step aside if opposition candidate Sall won Sunday's vote.

DAKAR, Senegal — World leaders and international observers on Monday lauded Senegal's presidential runoff election, saying that the country's peaceful vote and its quick resolution provided hope in a region long beset by coups and strongman rule.

In a surprise move just hours after polls closed, President Abdoulaye Wade called his opponent Macky Sall to congratulate his one-time protege on the victory. Sall's elated supporters already had begun celebrating in the streets after early results showed him with a commanding lead.

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan said the peaceful Senegalese vote was a hopeful sign, days after Mali's longtime president was ousted in a coup launched by mutinous soldiers.

"If there was ever any doubt, this election has proved that the foundation of Senegalese democracy is rock solid," he said. "This is good for the Senegalese people and also for our sub-region, especially at a time one of our brother countries is facing grave challenges to constitutional order."

Jonathan also praised Wade "for graciously accepting defeat, showing great maturity and statesmanship."

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon spoke by telephone Monday with Sall and Wade and congratulated them and the people of Senegal "for the exemplary manner in which both rounds of the presidential elections were conducted throughout the country," U.N. deputy spokesman Eduardo del Buey said.

Ban said the civic responsibility displayed by all political actors and civil society "was indicative of Senegal's strong democratic commitment," the spokesman said.

The U.N. chief commended Wade "for his gracious and statesmanlike actions" and urged the outgoing and incoming presidents "to work together in the coming days in the interest of the country," del Buey said.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy also commended the vote, which came after a violent election season that left at least six people dead.

However, state television reported only several hours after the polls closed that Wade had congratulated Sall.

"The results coming in indicated that Mr. Macky Sall had won. As I had always promised, I called him Sunday night to congratulate him," Wade said in a statement that was released to reporters early Monday.

No date has been formally set for Sall's inauguration as official results from the country's electoral commission are not expected until later in the week.

Sociologist Hadiya Tandian said that Wade's concession washes away the wounds of a violent election season, which tarnished the country's reputation.

2012

Sall, 50, a former prime minister who ran Wade's last campaign in 2007, is a geologist by training who worked for years under Wade. The two, though, had a subsequent falling out and during the campaign Wade referred to Sall as an apprentice who had not yet taken in "the lessons of his mentor."

Wade himself first took office in 2000 after his predecessor graciously conceded in a historic moment for Senegal. He easily won re-election in 2007, but has seen his popularity suffer amid soaring costs of living and unemployment. When he cast his ballot last month in the first round of balloting, some voters even booed him at the poll shouting: "Old man, get lost."

Whereas most African countries began holding elections post-independence in the 1960s, the Senegalese first cast their ballots 164 years ago starting in 1848 when France gave its territory the right to elect a deputy to the French parliament.

"This is a great victory for Senegal – it shows the maturity of our democracy," Tandian said. "It shows that the Senegalese believe in their voter IDs, that a voter card can change something, can make a difference. It shows that our long democratic heritage continues to live in us day by day."

Supporters of Sall jubilating

At a midnight press conference at a Dakar hotel, Sall offered few details on the conversation he had with Wade earlier in the evening. Instead, he praised the voters and said he would be the president for all Senegalese.

"Tonight, a new era begins for Senegal," Sall told the hundreds of journalists and euphoric supporters who crammed into the venue to hear him speak.

Most voters simply spoke of hardships or the need for change rather than Sall's credentials when explaining whom they supported at the polls on Sunday.

Marieme Ousmane Wele, 55, said she had voted for Sall because the rising prices of basic goods have made her life increasingly difficult.

"I sell cereal made from corn but the price of corn has really gone up. Now, I don't have many customers and it's becoming difficult to feed my own family," she said, as men sat nearby on plastic lawn chairs in the sand listening to news about the election on portable radios.

TB Joshua Delivers Man Addicted To Eating Feces, Urine and Sperm

Emmanuel TV that a video clip would be shown to verify Malomo’s confession. Stating that it was too graphic for him to witness, he covered his face and advised viewers without strong stomachs to do likewise. The clip showed Malomo mixing his own urine and faeces together and then drinking the revolting contents with apparent ease and delight. People within the auditorium vomited at the sight, distressed at the level of degradation the addiction had rendered on Malomo.

Joshua then called on the congregants to join together in supplication and proceeded to pray for the ‘demon’ within Malomo to come out! Falling to the floor, Malomo’s body began vibrating uncontrollably and uncannily. Asked to explain what was happening, Malomo said he felt as if something was leaving his body.

Controversial Nigerian Prophet T.B. Joshua can’t seem to stay out of the news. However, this time it’s not concerning a prophetic utterance or political visitor…

On Sunday 15th April 2012, Joshua’s popular church in Lagos was witness to a disgusting yet dramatic case of a man with a truly repulsive addiction. Mr Mukaila Malomo, a Nigerian who lived in Germany for 16 years, confessed to being addicted to regularly taking a sickening concoction of faeces, semen and urine.

According to Malomo, a graduate from the London School of Journalism, it all started one night in a prison cell in Germany. "I woke up in the middle of the night and a very wicked demon instructed me to get up from my bed,” he told the bewildered SCOAN congregation. “This strange voice said that I should go to the toilet, defecate and mix it with my sperm and urine. I mixed my urine, sperm and faeces and swallowed everything.”

Malomo, who worked in a reputable organic salad company in Munich before a drunken brawl landed him in prison, explained that an unusual anger and desire to fight immediately followed. “After I swallowed it, a very strange power came over me. I felt as if I was a small god. It overcame me and I became very strong and angry - as if there's an extra power from another world entering my body. I was ready for war. Ever since then, for over 15 years, I have been addicted to eating my faeces, urine and sperm. I can’t stop it.”

He continued his sordid tale, explaining how each indulgence in the addiction would result in further violence. “After my release from prison, I was always fighting in Germany. Sometimes, the police would have to cover the whole street to try and stop me - and I was using only a bottle. I kept on stabbing without getting tired – because of this power that entered me.”

People present in the church could scarcely contain their shock as Malomo’s revelations continued. “It is not only my own faeces; on many occasions, I visited public toilets here in Nigeria and Germany and ate from there.” He described the mixture as food to him. “I enjoy it. I don't even perceive any smell. I eat it as if I eat eba (Nigerian cuisine) or something like that.”

Malomo, married to a German Hungarian lady who gave birth to his only son while in prison, described how he had kept this addiction a total secret from the world around him. “As I am eating it, that evil spirit will be telling me that this thing is only for me, that nobody should know, otherwise the power will go.”

Joshua proceeded to tell his congregation and the viewers worldwide watching the live broadcast via Christian television station

Joshua then instructed Malomo to go to the church’s public toilet to see how his reaction towards human waste had changed following the prayer. Merely perceiving the odour of other’s defecation caused Malomo himself to vomit. He returned to the church, testifying that all desire for his former addiction had vanished as the realization of his earlier actions dawned upon him. “Apart from being irritated by the odour, I feel ashamed, in the sense that – how can a human being be eating faeces,” he told the congregation, as he joined Joshua in a joyful dance.

SCOAN has now controversially released the video on popular video-sharing site YouTube and via their Facebook account which has garnered well over 100,000 fans in just four months. Although Malomo’s case appears to be the most Pastor Chris extreme, many with strange addictions claim to have been delivered at Joshua’s ministry over the last few months, Do you remember the preacher that said m*st*u*r*b*a*tion including those addicted to drinking kerosene, eating ice was not a sin!!!! - Pastor Chris! cubes, sand, charcoal, mothballs and soil. Sometimes, you just wonder like "Is he really a man of God?" Is he real? In a desperate bid to generate attention and T.B. Joshua has set social networks and local media ablaze in controversy, Pastor Oyakhilome is now creating his cr*zy recent months, especially with his prediction concerning the rules, saying that Alcohol and drugs is not a sin!!! death of the late Malawian president Bingu wa Mutharika and revelations of his relationships with African leaders such as The founder and senior pastor of Christ Embassy, Pastor Ghana’s John Atta Mills, Zimbabwe’s Morgan Tsvangarai and Chris Oyakhilome on Sunday told all who cared to listen that Malawi’s new head Joyce Banda. His television station since the Bible does not expressly condemn both Cigarette Emmanuel TV continues to increase in popularity, especially and Alcohol, then there is nothing wrong with these stuffs. across Africa where he is becoming a household name. Source: Onlinenigeria.com

It all started when a viewer of his television programme wrote in to enquire from the popular pastor if it was wrong for a 'Christian to work in a Cigarette company'.

Below is the response from Pastor Chris: There is nothing wrong with Cigarette, the Bible doesn’t say anything was wrong with it... I know a lot of people do complain about it because of the relationship attached to it with some sicknesses like cancer...but if they really believe it is wrong why not ban it totally.

It is the same thing when you have Christians working in the Breweries. The Bible doesn’t condemn alcohol. The only reference made to alcohol in the Bible is ‘do not take too much of wine’. So you see these things has to do with the individual state...if they are convince something is not good they should just ban it..."

Agya Koo

Victoria Owusua Adomako, wife of popular actor Agya Koo, who had refrained from making any public comment since her husband caused her arrest two weeks ago on the allegation that she had stolen his car, has poured her heart out to Graphic Showbiz.

“If my husband doesn’t love me anymore because he is now rich and famous, the best thing is to divorce me but not to accuse me of theft”, the 38-year -old mother of one told Showbiz last Monday in Accra. According to her, never in the 17 years that she has been married to Agya Koo has she stolen a pesewa from him.

Victoria was responding to news that first broke on Adom News ago that her husband Agya Koo had cased her arrest for allegedly stealing his car and giving it to her boyfriend.

She told Showbiz, “Agya Koo himself knows how much I have contributed to his career. At the beginning of our relationship, there were many hard times for us. At one stage, he was not working and I was earning two cedis a day but I shared it with him. Even though it wasn’t enough, we managed.

Victoria said Agya Koo started behaving funny when hebegan to rise in to fame with movies like Asoreba, Ohia Asoma Wo, Wonyame Som mpo Nie and Otan ne Ahooyaa. “He would not eat my food and would insult me at the slightest disagreement. Victoria said she left her matrimonial home to avoid the continuous intimidation and humiliation and rented a single room at Kasoa to have her peace of mind.

She stated that she was very sick for some days when she moved in to her new place so a guy who lives closer to her named Kwadwo who is

now being accused as her boyfriend drove her to a nearby clinic for treatment after which he drove her back home. After that she and Kwadwo became good friends. “There was nothing amorous between us because he knew I was married and I also respected myself as a wife”, she said.

Narrating her arrest incident, Victoria said “I was home when I was informed that Kwadwo had been picked up by the Tesano police because of me so I drove there to find out if it was true. Just as I arrived at the station and my husband saw me, he shouted, ‘arrest the prostitute, she has stolen my car for her boyfriend’. I was arrested there and then and kept in police cells overnight”

When Showbiz contacted Agya Koo over the phone last Tuesday, denied his wife’s allegations. He said he caused the arrest of his wife because she stole his car and gave it to her boyfriend. He said that he had been he a loving husband and has been adequately providing for the wife and child so he was very surprised when he returned from a trip abroad only to find that his wife has stolen his car.

Agya Koo said he was very much aware that his wife is being encouraged by her peers to bring him down but all that will not materialise because he knows he has done his duty as a loving husband. “I have not spoken on any media network yet but I am planning to clear myself next week so that Ghanaians will know who is telling the truth”, he said.

Anytime I am given a platform like this to say something sensible, I never do. But today I’m going to try and say something worthwhile. Great thanks go to God, the crew of the movie, ‘Somewhere in Africa’, 4reez, Louis. I want to thank them for supporting me to bring that character out. I want to say big thanks to you AMAA awards” were the words of Ghanaian actor Majid Michel after he picked his first African Movie Academy Award in Lagos Nigeria on Sunday April 22 as Africa’s overall Best Actor 2012.

“This is my AMAA awards 2012. Today is a memorable day for me. I have been nominated for the past 4 years consecutively. I didn’t see it coming. I had a bet with my advisor- Mawuli. He told me I was going to win but I said no I don’t deserve it. So if I win I will give him the award, (he gave the statuette to Mawuli who was on stage with him and others), but I will take it later. I want to say big thanks to you my wife, my sister, my mum paid my film fees and to my father, who is late. To all single people here thank you so much for the support. I can see some faces; Nse, Rita, Kate … I don’t want to say much. I think the time is ticking. Thank you so much AMAA awards. Great job for me; next year I will be back,” he added after receiving his award from Lynn Whitefield on stage.

He outshined Hollywood superstars Hakeem Kae Kazim and Chet Anekwe, and other contenders such as Wale Ojo from Nigeria and top actors Karado Lance, Jafta Mamabolo and Menzi Ngubane- all from South Africa. It is Majid’s first AMAA award after being nominated four times since 2009.

Nollywood’s Rita Dominic won Africa’s Best Actress In Leading role, beating Yvonne Okoro, Ama K Abebrese, Nse Ikpe Etim and Millicent Makheido. Leila Djansi’s ‘Ties That Bind’ won the Achievement In Screenplay category while ‘African Elections’, a documentary on Ghana’s election by Jarreth Merz won the Best Documentary award.

South African film ‘How To Steal 2 Million’ won Best Film Of The Year while AMAA Jury Special Award went to another South African film, ‘Man On Ground’.

Other key technical awards like AMAA 2012 Achievement In Editing, AMAA 2012 Achievement In Visual Effect, AMAA 2012 Achievement In Cinematography, and AMAA 2012 Best Director went to ‘How To Steal 2 Million’ – South Africa, ‘Adesuwa’–Nigeria, ‘Otelo Burning’– South Africa and ‘How To Steal 2 Million’ – Charlie Vundla respectively.

The awards night attracted a number of Nollywood stars and others from Uganda, Kenya, South Africa and Ghana. Hollywood actors Rockmond Dunbar, Lynn Whitfield, Maya Gilbert and Morris Chestnut were the guests of honour.

Hosted by Haiti born Hollywood actor Jimmy Jean Louis and Nigeria’s celebrity O.C Ukeje, the ceremony was full of interesting and entertaining performances by 2face Idibia, Asa, Yinka Davis, Senegal’s Vivian and Edge.

The awards started with a red carpet ceremony which saw a number of Nollywood old faces displaying their fashionable garbs. Among them were Benita Nzeribe, Maureen Solomon, Tony Umez, Chinyere Wilfred, Aki, Kate Henshaw and a lot of others. Ghana’s Lydia Forson, Yvonne Okoro, Ama K. Abebrese, Juliet Ibrahim and Amanda Jissih did not disappoint their fans on the red carpet.

Asantewa Olatunji, head of AMAA jury, before handing over the list of award winners on stage, acknowledged that films entered for the award this year were of higher quality. That, she said, made it difficult for the jury to pick winners.

Peace Anyiam Osigwe was enthusiastic about the glamorous nature of the event and implored African governments to support the creative industries in their various countries.

She used the opportunity to urge African filmmakers to “tell African stories our own way”. She believed Nollywood had changed the face of African cinema and applauded the industry for that. She was also happy about how African stars were having successful careers on the world stage. Source: Dailyguideghana.com

Charles Taylor Convicted on all 11 Counts; Sentencing Scheduled for 30 May Post

Charles Ghankay Taylor, the former President of Liberia, was convicted today on all counts of an 11-count indictment which alleged that he was responsible for crimes committed by rebel forces during Sierra Leone’s decade-long civil war. The Special Court’s Trial Chamber II found unanimously that Mr. Taylor aided and abetted RUF and AFRC rebels in the commission of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Sierra Leone.

Mr. Taylor was convicted on Count 1 for acts of terrorism (a war crime), on Count 2 for murder (a crime against humanity), on Count 3 for murder (a war crime), on Count 4 for rape (a crime against humanity), on Count 5 for sexual slavery (a crime against humanity), on Count 6 for outrages upon personal dignity (a war crime), on Count 7 for cruel treatment (a war crime), on Count 8 for inhumane acts, including mutilations and amputations, (a crime against humanity), on Count 9 for the recruitment, enlistment and use of child soldiers, on Count 10 for enslavement (a crime against humanity), and on Count 11 for pillage (a war crime).

The Prosecution had not alleged that Mr. Taylor had committed these crimes in person, but that he participated from Liberia in the commission of crimes by AFRC and RUF rebels and, under Articles 6.1 and 6.3 of the Special Court Statute, was individually responsible for them. The Chamber found that he had aided and abetted the rebels by providing them with arms and ammunition, military personnel, operational support and moral support, making him individ-

ually responsible for their crimes. Charles Taylor is the first head of state to be indicted, tried and convicted by an international tribunal.

Bazin, Ms. Downs elaborates, is not just a fashion statement. The women make a profit. And the industry has turned them into a close-knit social group, with a common The Chamber has scheduled a sentencing hearing socio-economic purpose. “It is like a collecfor Wednesday, 16 May 2012, and the sentencing tive enterprise, very communal. They must be given in a specified term of years. The hang them on their neighbours’ fences to Special Court may not impose a life sentence or the dry.” she says. death penalty.

Mr. Taylor was ordered remanded in custody until the 16 May hearing.

At the Special Court, both Prosecution and Defence may appeal. A notice of appeal must be filed within 14 days of the full judgement and sentence.

The Special Court for Sierra Leone is the first “hybrid” tribunal, created by an agreement between the United Nations and the Government of Sierra Leone, and is the first modern court to have its seat in the country where the crimes took place. It is the first court to convict former rebel and militia leaders for the use of child soldiers, for forced marriage as a crime against humanity, and for attacks directed at United Nations peacekeepers.

With today’s judgement, the Special Court has reached a major milestone, and is on course towards being the first modern international criminal tribunal to complete its mandate.

Malian women create beauty and profit through local fabrics

Hand-dyed polished cotton — called bazin — is the mainstay of Malian fashion. The blind singers Amadou Bagayoko and Mariam Doumbia extolled the fabric in a song released in 2005, “Beaux dimanches” (“Beautiful Sundays”). The song’s scintillating lyrics include the lines: “Sunday in Bamako is the wedding day / Men and women put on their best boubous / The bazins are waiting for you / This is the wedding day.” It became the hit song on an album that won two prestigious British Broadcasting Corporation awards the following year, including one for best “world music” album.

the 1960s, when synthetic dyes arrived in West Africa, Malians learned how to use colorants on fabrics to reflect their aesthetic tastes. Nigerians have since established a niche for themselves in embroidery, allowing Malians to claim the bragging rights for high-quality hand-dyed fabrics.

China. Then they cut it to standard sizes. Next they knot tissues tightly into parts of the fabric so that those parts remain undyed when the cloth is dipped into buckets of pigment and fixative. When the fabric emerges it bears coloured spirals, rings or patterns.

Maureen Gosling, a US filmmaker, is collaborating with Maxine Downs, an anthropologist, to produce a film on bazin called Bamako Chic: Threads of Power, Colour and Culture. According to Ms. Downs, they want to show how “self-empowered African women turned their artistic creativity and resourcefulness into a force for alleviating their There is an engaging paradox in two blind people own poverty.” singing about the beauty of bazin, and the floral patterns and alluring colours that make young Ms. Downs visited Mali several times to meet some women look so elegant that bachelors hastily of the women in the burgeoning industry. “When I vow marriage. went to Mali, I was shocked by the women’s resilience, their ability to create something out of Hand-dyeing bazin can be labour-intensive for nothing,” she told Africa Renewal. the women who produce it. First they import the fabric — mostly cotton, but sometimes silk or Malians have historically been good at making fabwool — from Germany, the Netherlands or ric and used to compete with Yorubas in Nigeria. In

The involvement of textile importers, dye sellers, tailors, bankers and, ultimately, consumers further enlarges the industry. This is good news for a country ranked by the World Bank as one of the poorest in the world. Life expectancy is just 51 years, while the average gross domestic product per person is $691.

The bazin industry is still informal. There is no registration of those involved, according to Hannah Larsson, who has studied textile dyeing in Mali. However, the entrepreneurial successes of the women depend on micro-loans from non-governmental organizations such as the US-based Freedom from Hunger. The group’s Saving for Change programme in Mali, which began in 1989, has so far reached more than 350,000 Malian women, with cumulative financing of nearly $7.5 million.

Some of those women are in the bazin business, according to Christopher Dunford, a senior research fellow with the NGO. The programme provides affordable credit and saving services, while repayment terms are flexible. To access the loans, Mr. Dunford adds, groups of women come together to overcome their limited collateral.

As good as the business appears today for Malian women, they fear that a moribund indigenous textile industry could hold back progress. Mali’s two leading textile companies, Comatex and Batexci, both privately owned, are gasping for breath as they face competition in their own market from cheaper and better products from Europe and Asia.

In addition, depressed world cotton prices have made it difficult for West Africans to compete internationally. Cotton production in Mali declined from 600,000 to 240,000 metric tonnes between 2004 and 2011, and cotton growers are paid as little as 30 cents per kilogramme. Less than 2 per cent of Mali’s cotton is processed locally, with the rest exported to developed countries and Asia, where it is processed and resold to dealers, including West Africans.

There are also health and environmental concerns about bazin production. “The women continue to develop respiratory ill-

May

25

nesses. They are exposed to sulphur that they use to help colours stick to the fabrics,” Ms. Downs notes.

The government’s environmental agency has had little success in dealing with the environmental impact of hand-dyeing.

As bazin’s popularity spreads beyond Mali’s borders, the women are motivated to work even harder. Many are already exporting to countries such as Senegal and Nigeria, and more traders from other countries are coming into Mali to make purchases. “In Mali, you come into the market and you will hear different West African languages,” says Ms. Downs.

It makes good business sense to set sights on the enormous West African market of 252 million people. West Africans are proud, traditional dressers. The leaders of Nigeria, Mali, Liberia and other countries often wear traditional attire at official functions, for example. At the UN General Assembly in October 2011, Mali’s Prime Minister Cissé Mariam Kaïdama Sidibé was the centre of attention in a flowing bazin.

Increasing demand for bazin has triggered innovation, as Malian women introduce more exotic colours and products of higher quality. But the challenge is that a fast-growing and profitable business may attract people with more interest in profit than quality. “Why can’t these women just get machines that will support production?” asks Oumar Damba, a Bamako-based fashion designer.

Not so fast, cautions Ms. Downs. Machine production may affect the unique character of the bazin designs and, perhaps, the style consciousness of the producers. “Since the 1960s, there has been the question of whether the hand-dyeing industry can be modernized. It is hard for me to answer that question,” she adds.

As Malian politicians campaigned for the April 2012 presidential election, there also seemed to be a contest over which one could wear the best bazin on billboards, on posters and even in Facebook pages. Meanwhile, Malian women are smiling all the way to the bank.

Perseverance

Afrikan

Post

To persevere is to continue in a state inspite of counter influences. Perseverance enables us to advance through trials and it qualifies us to inherit what God has promised us.

Luke 5:17-20 says: “One day Jesus was teaching, and Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there. They had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was with Jesus to heal the sick. 18 Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus. 19 When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.20 When Jesus saw their faith, he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.”

This story teaches us how the men persevered and refused to allow their surroundings to stop them from achieving what they wanted.

The men were full of hope that their friend can be healed by Jesus; however, they realized that there was no way to get in all because the crowd had blocked the way.

When it seems like there is no way, it does not mean that God has stopped working; He is still God and so you need to still persevere.

The men therefore resolved to go through the roofing of the building where Jesus was. They let their sick friend down from the roof to where Jesus was sitting.

Perseverance feeds on four things: Passion (the drive to move on), Possibility (you must know that what you want to achieve is possible), perspiration (Hard work) and persistence (determination).

To persevere therefore, you must draw strength from God and trust Him to work a more glorious outcome for you. Always know that whatever situation you are in, will not disgrace you but is working for your glory. Just believe in God, persevere and never give up. Source: Peacefmonline.com

An Attribute of God

Definition: God is a non-material personal being, self-conscious and self-determining.

Meaning: God is someone we can get to know. He, unlike ourselves, doesn't need to be told what to do. On the other hand He tells us what to do and how to live in a manner pleasing to Him. Just because He can't be seen by the human eye doesn't mean He is not there and therefore should be ignored. Quite the opposite is true, His creation demonstrates His existence. Also, since he cannot be seen, we need to devote ourselves to study everything that has been written about Him so that we can get to know Him like He wants us to and begin to live our lives in a way that pleases Him.

I Timothy 1:17 Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Conclusion:

God has no image. He cannot be seen by the human eye, but creation points to His existence. His Son, Jesus testified to His existence and desire to be sought by His creatures. He also provided us with an example of how to live our lives seeking and serving God. Source: Parentcompany.com

West Africa: ECOWAS Talking Softer, But Still Holding Big Stick

May 2012

Dakar — Regional leaders meeting in the Senegalese capital, Dakar, on May 3 appeared to slightly retreat from their positions against coup leaders in Guinea-Bissau and Mali, but the Economic Community of West African States continues to press for a speedy return to constitutional rule in both countries.

The Ivorian president, Alassane Ouattara, who is also the current head of ECOWAS, said "The seriousness of events in Mali and the rejection of our resolutions by the junta have slowed the momentum of implementation of our decisions."

"Neither the interim president nor the transitional prime minister may stand as candidates in the eventual presidential election," stressed Kadré Désiré Ouédraogo, the president of the ECOWAS Commission. "Appropriate mechanisms will be found to extend the mandate of the current parliament to cover the transition period."

Analysts say the new resolution appears to show a softening of ECOWAS's position on Guinea-Bissau. The regional organisation initially wanted Raimundo Pereira - a member of the dominant African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde His remarks came as the country's military junta (PAIGC) and interim president at the time of rejected the regional organisation's plan to the coup - to head a transitional government, deploy troops to the West African country - this but this was rejected by the coup's leaders in despite the continued control of the north by Bissau. The summit instructed the ECOWAS

Commission to seek assistance from the African Union, the United Nations and the wider international community to implement these initiatives in Guinea-Bissau, he concluded.

Turning to the Malian crisis, the Dakar summit called on transitional authorities there to accelerate the elaboration of a roadmap for a return to constitutional rule, including a clear timeline for legislative, organisational and operational activity leading up to the holding of presidential elections in Mali.

"The Summit repeats that any person who obstructs the proper functioning of institutions of the Republic will be subject to targeted sanctions," stressed Ouédraogo.

West African heads of state also made a fresh call to Mali's armed forces to devote themselves to the protection of the country's people and its territorial integrity, and to refrain from any acts likely to disturb the transition process. ECOWAS added that it would only send troops to Mali at the request of the interim authorities.

Here too, analysts note that ECOWAS has reconsidered decisions taken at an earlier special summit (in Abidjan on Apr. 26) when it committed to sending an armed force to Mali. The junta in Bamako rejected this out of hand, arguing that it would violate the country's sovereignty. At a May 2 press conference, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for West Africa, Saïd Djinnit, warned of the serious threat posed by the instability in Mali.

"The situation, particularly in the north, constitutes first of all a serious threat to Mali, but also to the whole of West Africa and globally," he said.

Page 28

"(The United Nations) will support all subregional initiatives to fight against terrorists present in northern Mali," said Djinnit.

At the opening of the summit in Dakar a day later, Senegalese President Macky Sall called for all parties to persevere along a path of dialogue, adding that, "(ECOWAS seeks) to eradicate the seeds of destabilisation which, in the end, will not spare any country in the region."

Despite the intense focus on Mali and GuineaBissau over the past month, Ouattara urged leaders to remain focused on development in the region.

"The management of political crises like the ones we have had to deal with at these summits must leave space for the other objectives of our regional organisation, including the construction of roads, schools, and hospitals, and improving living conditions for people and especially youth employment."

Political scientist Massaer Diallo, the president of the Institute for Political and Strategic Studies in Dakar, said, "The final resolution from ECOWAS shows there is still a reluctance to respect democracy. Constitutional rule must be re-established in Guinea-Bissau, and it is also fundamental in the case of Mali."

"Despite all the negotiations that can take place at the international level, the question of Mali's territorial integrity is non-negotiable, and it calls for the entire international community to restore it."

FAITH honors GOD and GOD honors FAITH.

ships. If you walk in the ways of God you will meet God, that is for sure. Uzziah the teenage King chose to walk in the ways of God and massively profited from it.

Listen to this, Uzziah, the son of Amaziah sought the Lord in the days of Zachariah who had understanding in the visions of God. So long as he sought the Lord. God made him prosper. (2 Ch. 26:5) This young guy, Uzziah had become King of Judah at the age of sixteen. You know at sixteen he did not have any significant life experience; personal or vicarious to rule a nation. Political sagacity was alien to him. He did not know any statecraft. As result he sought out a mentor, and found one in the person of a knowledgeable pastor (Jer.3:15) by name Zachariah who enlarged to him the decrees of life; principles that govern life. Uzziah practiced it.

God abhors prostitution so much that even the offering of a prostitute was not allowed in the temple. You must not bring the earning of a female prostitute or a male prostitute into the House of the Lord your God to pay a vow. Because the Lord you God detests them both. (Deut 23:18)

God honors faith.

Rev. Kwabby Adom-Fosu Tel: 703-498-5133

He sought the Lord in the days of Zachariah who had understanding in the visions of God. So long as he sought the Lord, the Lord made him prosper - 2 Ch 25:5 Mercy is the most important attribute of God. When Moses went to God at the tent and asked to see God's glory. He might probably have reminded Moses, have you forgotten you are a murderer? I am going to talk to you about my mercy. It is my mercy that left you off the hook. As a result God passed by and proclaimed his mercy and compassion instead. (Ex 33:19)God is merciful. His mercy let go and forgives what a person deserves: judgment; condemnation. And His grace endows what an individual does not deserve: salvation; favor. No human being can reach God's standard by himself. God always meets anyone who comes to Him half way by grace (Eph. 2:8-9) The mercy of God overlooks every sin committed if an individual trusts God(Ps 32:10) Naomi and her family journeyed from Israel to the land of Moab, there her husband and two sons died and she decided to go back to Israel. Her two daughter-in-laws decided to follow her.Naomi tried to talk them out of it. Orpha agreed. But Ruth did not budge. Destiny urged her on. She said I will follow you, your God will be my God and your people will be my people.

By her confession of faith in God, Ruth literally forced herself into the Kingdom of God and took her place in history. With the heart you believe and with the mouth confession is made into salvation. (Rom 10:8-11) By faith, she who was banished from the assembly of the Lord, (Deut 28:3) pushed herself into the line of David and the genealogy of Christ the King.

Ruth is the main reason why I am emboldened to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Why? The benefits are immense; Jer. 17:7-8 says blessed are those who trust in the Lord whose confidence is in Him. They shall be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit. Her moral integrity won God's approval and was handsomely rewarded. (Isa 54:14)

God honors faith!

Yet Rahab, the prostitute of Jericho also pushed herself into the genealogy of Jesus Christ. (Matt 1:5) Just by her confession of faith in the God of Israel (Josh 2:9-12) Rahab was in the mode of the 'DC Madam' -- Deborah Jeanne Palfrey; a woman charged with running a Washington, D.C.-area prostitution ring -she had access to the High and the Low: the Cream and the Dregs of the society. 34A f r i

I regret everything that happened. It was a bad moment for me and I am very sorry things happened the way it did. I will not let Nigeria down again.

What is the relationship like with your team mates ?

I have a very good relationship with all of them. The guys were happy to see me back in the team. Despite what happened, they all supported and encouraged me. We are like brothers.

When are you likely to report to camp for the next phase?

It will either be by the end of May or first week in June. We finish the league here in Ukraine on May 10th and afterwards, I will be in Nigeria.

As you plan your return to Nigeria, what is the one issue in the Country that bothers you?

The bombing and killings of innocent people is unfair. I was in Kano when the multiple bomb blasts occured. There were several bomb blasts in one day. It was really scary you know.... you will be walking on the street and someone will just gun you down for no reason. It will be recalled that at the 2010 World cup event, Kaita was sent off the with a Red card in Nigeria's match against Greece.

What was your immediate reaction when you were invited back to the team?

I was really shocked. I knew Keshi as a Coach. I didn't know him personally. When he approached me that he needed me in the team, I was shocked. I couldn't believe it. Because he trusted me to bring me back, I will not let him down.

Looking back, what regrets do you have from the incident at the World Cup?

Honorable Akinwumi Adesina, Minister for Agriculture, Federal Republic of Nigeria

To recapture Nigeria’s former status as West Africa’s breadbasket, the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Washington, DC and the Corporate Council on Africa cohosted an exceptional Agribusiness Investment forum in the nation’s capital under the theme, Nigeria: Transforming Agribusiness through Investment. The event, a first, showcased Nigeria’s Agriculture Transformation Agenda and presented investment opportunities in the agricultural sector.

Participants from Nigeria included a high level delegation of senior government officials, state governors and corporations seeking to partner with and buy from American companies. Delivering his Keynote Address, Honorable Akinwumi Adesina, Minister for Agriculture, emphasized his government’s commitment to mechanized farming and the need to partner with American investors to transform the sector.

Agriculture represents 40% of Nigeria’s GDP and is the country’s leading employer. The Nigerian government is prioritizing agricultural development by infusing $3 billion and creating Staple Crop Processing Zones.

Nigeria is Africa’s most populous nation with an estimated 10 million people in its rapidly growing middle class. She is a major consumer of a range of agricultural products, seeking to dramatically increase domestic production and processing of such products through technology, capacity building and value-chain enhancement.

Khartoum — One day after the UN Security Council (UNSC) ordered them to cease hostilities within 48 hours, Sudan and South Sudan are already accusing each other of committing fresh military assaults.

South Sudan's army spokesperson, Philip Aguer, said on Thursday that Sudanese warplanes dropped six bombs on their base in Panakuach, Unity State.

Aguer also said that another attack involving aerial bombardment and long-range artillery targeted an army base about 25 km away from Panakuach.

The accusation followed the adoption on Wednesday of a UNSC resolution directing both countries to cease all forms of hostilities, including aerial bombardment, within 48 hours.

Furthermore, the UNSC resolution ordered the two sides to withdraw troops from disputed border regions, including Abyei, within a week in order to prepare for the establishment of a demilitarized border zone.

united Sudan.

The Sudanese diplomat also said that South Sudan had already occupied disputed border areas, including Kafia Kingi and Kafia Dabi.

Marwaih warned that Sudan would be entitled to self-defense if South Sudan does not commit to cessation of hostilities and withdrawal of troops.

He reaffirmed Sudan's commitment to the Abyei Protocol of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) as well as to implementing the withdrawal of its troops from the region as per the agreement for temporary administrative and security arrangements for Abyei signed in Addis Ababa in June 2011.

Sudan occupied Abyei in May last year and is yet to withdraw troops despite agreeing to do so under the Addis Ababa deal.

Regarding the UNSC resolution, Marawih expressed Khartoum's positive view of some of its elements, including condemnation of South Sudan's brief occupation last month of The UNSC resolution also threatened Heglig region as well as calls for both countries with non-military sanc- assessing the damages allegedly inflicted by the southern army on oil infrations if they don't conclude negotiations over borders, oil exports and cit- structure there. izenship rights within three months. Benin: With World Bank Support, Benin to Expand Decentralized Basic Services for Poor People and Empower Communities May 2012

Washington — The World Bank will support Benin's effort to improve poor people's access to basic services such as education, health, and water, roads and market infrastructure and mainstream the community-driven development approach for building such infrastructure. The Bank will also provide capacity-building and technical assistance to support Benin's decentralization reforms and help the country to set up a new social safety net system.

The World Bank's Executive Board has approved today an International Development Association (IDA) credit of US$46 million for Benin's Decentralized Community Driven Services Project. Through the new project, this financing will help the Beninese government to strengthen the delivery of basic services at the decentralized level by providing all 77 communes in Benin with greater and more predictable funding for basic service delivery infrastructure.

Depending on their level of poverty, each of the communes will receive transfers (averaging about US$160,000 per year) to support multiple development projects. Village or urban neighborhood associations in at least 700 poor communities will play a major role in carrying out these smallscale investment projects.

With the new financing, the government will also pilot a community-driven safety net program comprising a direct cash transfer to targeted poor households and a labor-intensive public works program to provide jobs during the agricultural lean season. The main objective is to increase incomes for poor households over a sustained period and to avoid negative coping decisions which may include selling assets, pulling children out of school and sending children to work. The safety net will target 12,000 poor households in 120 villages during the pilot phase, enabling them to maintain and build their assets and participate in higher-return activities.

key ministries, communes, and communities to deliver basic decentralized social services, use the community driven development approach, and test new social accountability mechanisms including community scorecards. Since 2005, over 700,000 people have already participated in grassroots management training as part of the World Bank-supported National Community Driven Development Project, which has just been completed.

"This new World Bank support builds upon the successful implementation of the previous National Community Driven Development Project which has benefited thousands of people, including over 158,000 children who were able to attend primary schools that were built or rehabilitated under the project," said Madani M. Tall, World Bank Country Director for Benin. "We are also pleased to support the introduction of a pilot social safety net system, which will help poor people to improve their incomes, protect their assets, and invest in the future of their families."

The new project is fully aligned with Benin's poverty reduction strategy (2011-2015) which singles out the Community Driven Development approach as a recommended mechanism for promoting participatory local development, and for implementing projects at the local level. It is also aligned with the World Bank's Country Assistance Strategy for Benin, which seeks to improve access to basic services, promote better governance, and strengthen institutional capacities.

World Bank support to social protection in Africa has been growing both during and after the recent food, fuel, and economic crises. By the end of this year, safety net assessments will have been completed in 20 African countries, including Benin. As in Benin, where the safety net pilot in this project is the result of a Bank-supported analytical program, many governments are already using these assessments to help design and establish national safety net programs. World Bank lending commitments for social protection in Africa have grown from an average of US$260 million a year during fiscal years 2001-05 to US$600 million a year in fiscal years 2006-2010. Commitments in the fiscal year 2012 stand at over US$700 million.

Finally, the new project will support capacitybuilding activities to help strengthen the ability of Source:Allafrica.com

JOY erupted on social media following the SA men hockey team’s thrilling 2-1 victory over Japan in the final of the Olympic Qualification Tournament in Kakamigahara on May 6 2012.

Rugby World Cup winning captain John Smit, cricket great Shaun Pollock and Sharks skipper Keegan Daniel offered their congratulations. Daniel tweeted: “Great victory for SA men’s hockey team. Well done boys!”

The president of the SA Hockey Association, Dave Carr, said he had received about 20 messages, some from people he hadn’t heard from in years.

He described the victory as a “great achieve-

ment considering the team had no corporate sponsor and were therefore unable to prepare properly.

“It’s a great credit to the players and it illustrates the fighting spirit of South African teams.”

He said the SA-based players in the team (others play professional hockey in Europe) would be returning home tomorrow and would have a press conference in Joburg.

Carr said he would be sitting down with members of Sascoc (SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee) and the Department of Sport and Recreation this week to plan the

team’s Olympics preparations.

He hoped he could secure enough funds for squad camps and international matches to prepare for the Olympic Games that start on July 29.

SA will now take their place in Group A, along with Australia, Great Britain, Spain, Pakistan and Argentina. l Sascoc has also congratulated the team.

“That sure was nerve-racking,” president Gideon Sam declared after watching the match. “It was a great win for the boys. It’s great to have them joining us in London.

“We set down tough qualifying conditions for them but they have now fully justified their spot on Team South Africa.

Sascoc chief executive Tubby Reddy said: “We were criticised for laying down these additional criteria.

“But the fact that both our sides (men and women) have risen to the task and qualified now justifies our decision.

“There’s no doubting that the two sides are worthy additions to Team South Africa in London.”

1995 Petre Gavrilla (RUM) New Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah is relishing his “underdog” status following his promotion from assistant coach of the Black Stars.

Appiah’s appointment last week was a surprise, with big names such as Marcel Desailly heavily linked with the post, but the 53-year-old is determined to succeed.

“I like it when people under-rate me. It is always good to be the underdog,” Appiah told BBC Sport.

“I have been with the boys for some time now and that is of great advantage. I know them on and off the pitch and I think that is the main reason that the Ghana Football Association gave me the job. It is up to me to prove how I handle this.”

Appiah signed a two-year contract to become the first Ghanaian coach of the Black Stars for a decade when he replaced Serbian Goran Stevanovic, who was fired in the wake of Ghana’s failure to win the Nations Cup in Gabon/Equatorial Guinea earlier this year.
