Prince William in Kenya for ExGirlfriend's Wedding, Meets Uhuru

By Rob Jillo

Nairobi — Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge is in Kenya for the Easter weekend to attend the wedding of his ex-girlfriend Jessica Craig, and met with President Uhuru Kenyatta Thursday morning.

Kensington Palace announced that the Duke would be making a "private" four-day visit to Africa, saying he would be spending time on the wildlife reserve where he got engaged, as well as having a brief official meeting with President Kenyatta.

"I have this morning met Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, who called on me at State House," President Kenyatta said adding: "Our deliberations revolved around conservation, security and defence."

Kensington Palace said the meeting took place at the request of Her Majesty's Government, "and His Royal Highness is pleased to have the opportunity to meet the President while he is in Kenya." "They will discuss the relationship between the United Kingdom and Kenya, to deepen relations between the two countries on a broad range of topics including defence and security, and conservation."

The Duke, who is President of United For Wildlife, will spend the rest of the day seeing some of the conservation and anti-poaching initiatives in Kenya first hand including spending time with rangers to find out more about their fight against rhino poachers.

According to the Telegraph, Miss Craig, 34, will marry conservationist Professor Jonathan Baillie on the Lewa wildlife reserve run by her father Ian Craig.

The Duke has remained so close to the Craig family that when Jecca's brother got married in 2008 the Duke went to that wedding rather than that of his cousin Peter Phillips on the same day. It was also during a holiday on the Lewa reserve that the Duke proposed to the then Kate Middleton in 2010.

Tusk Trust, which has William as its Royal Patron, supports this conservation work with the Duke watching vets in the field fit radio tracking collars to elephants to help with research and conservation. Source:allafrica.com

Meet The Nigerian Genius Who Designed GM’s Revolutionary Chevrolet Volt, Mr. Jelani Aliyu!

Jelani Aliyu, hails from Sokoto State, Nigeria and is General Motors Lead Exterior Designer and the designer of the Chevy Volt. General Motors is the world’s largest automobile maker. The car has been described as an American Revolution and one of the hottest concepts in the design line.

Jelani was born in 1966 in Kaduna, to Alhaji Aliya Haidara and Sharifiya Hauwa’u Aliyu. The fifth of seven children, theirs is a very close-knit family. For him, it was an amazing experience growing up in Sokoto, surrounded by the rich culture of the people and the state and enjoying excellent access to the latest and international information. From 1971 to 1978, he attended Capital School, Sokoto, an excellent school and this served as a very productive educational experience for him. In 1978, he gained admission into Federal Government College, Sokoto, from where he graduated in 1983 with an award as the best in Technical Drawing. Jelani was privileged to meet and make many good friends from all parts of the country and beyond during this time. He had tremendous encouragement and mentoring from his family and friends and his creative art develop the ed. He drew a lot, designed his own cars, and even built scale models of them, complete with exteriors and interiors. After FGC, he got admission into the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria to study Architecture, but soon discovered that curriculum did not support his future vision and plans.

After considering other institutions in Nigeria and their academic programmes, he concluded that only one of them had the study criteria that would support his future goals. The institution in which he chose to pursue his education was one he felt offered the best creative programmes and had experience that would give him the best foundation required to study Automobile Design abroad. That institution was the Birnin Kebbi Polytechnic.

He was there from 1986 to 1988 and earned an associate degree in Architecture, with an award as Best AllRound Student. While there, he did some in depth research into home design and construction, looking into materials and structures that would be most compatible with our environment and climate; buildings that would stay cool in a hot environment with little, or no artificial electrical air conditioning. Upon graduation from the polytechnic, Jelani worked for a while at the Ministry of Works, Sokoto. In 1990, Aliyu moved to Detroit, Michigan to enroll at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit under a Sokoto Schorlarship board sponsorship. Having always wanted to study Automobile Design, this was a dream come true and an absolutely fascinating experience. The course was very practical and emphasis was put on creativity and the development of new designs to provide solutions . He received his degree in automobile design in 1994.

In 1994 he began his career with the design staff of General Motors. He worked on the Buick Rendezvous and was the lead exterior designer of the Pontiac G6. He also worked on the Astra with General Motors’ Opel Division.

With his brilliant work on the design of the Chevrolet Volt, which was unveiled in 2007, Jelani Aliyu is considered by many to be the super star of the General Motors renaissance.

Central African Republic: Touadera Wins Election

The former prime minister of Central African Republic Faustin Archange Touadera has won the country's presidential election, the national election body announced.

Main rival Anicet Georges Dologuele, another former prime minister, who took the most votes in the first round, accepted the result that put Touadera on 63 percent of the ballots cast.

At a press conference on Saturday night, Dologuele said he will accept the results and recognise Touadera as president, although he expressed concern about irregularities, the Associated Press news agency reported. Turnout in the runoff, held on March 14, was put at 61 percent and the constitutional court now has a week to validate the result.

Touadera served as prime minister for Francois Bozize who was toppled by the mostly Muslim Seleka rebel coalition in 2013.

The Seleka installed their leader, Michel Djotodia, as head of state that year, but widespread human rights abuses prompted reprisal attacks from Christian militia fighters known as the anti-Balaka.

Djotodia stepped down in early 2014 under intense international pressure, and the country has been run by a transitional government until now.

Peace deal

Many hope the vote will strengthen a tentative peace deal after more than two years of sectarian fighting left untold thousands dead and forced nearly 500,000 people to flee to neighbouring countries.

Both candidates had run on platforms of unifying the country and solidifying the recent peace gains made since the visit of Pope Francis in November. Before the runoff vote, Touadera said he wanted to prioritise reconciliation and disarmament.

Uganda: President Museveni Wins Fifth Term

By Joel Muinde

"These elections are important but they are not the only step out of this crisis," he said. "We have to create the conditions for dialogue between the two communities. We will do everything we can so that Central Africans can live together in Central African Republic."

A mathematics professor and university official, Touadera drew popular support in large part because he remained in Bangui throughout the conflict that erupted in late 2013.

Many supporters said they felt he was more in tune with the hardships of Central Africans than his rival Dologuele, who has worked abroad for a number of international financial organizations.

Others, though, have expressed concern that he may be too closely aligned to former president Bozize.

Nigerian shows electricity U.S. Congress Honours Nigerian’s Dr. Omalu generator that is powered For Raising Awareness On Repetitive Brain Trauma! by water

Nigeria’s own Dr. Bennet Omalu who serves as the Chief Medical Examiner of San Joaquin County in California was recently honoured on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives for his efforts to raise awareness of repetitive brain trauma.

Rep. Jerry McNerney, D-Stockton, took the opportunity to honor Omalu, whose discoveries have highlighted the potential dangers to those who play football.

A Nigerian man Emeka Nelson claims to have developed an electricity generator that is powered by water – The young inventor started a fundraising campaign, hopes to get N2,000,000 (or $10,000) asap – Emeka promises that his new invention, an “ultra modern bio digester” is coming soon Nsukka-born Emeka Nelson claims to have invented a generator that runs on water, a machine for recycling non-biodegradable wastes. His third invention, a bio digester, is under development. A graduate of the National Metallurgical Training Institute has started a fundraising campaign on social media trough his partner, Karo Kanye Akamune. Omalu was the first medical professional to raise the alarm that repeated head trauma could lead to a degenerative brain disorder, Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. He made his original discovery as a forensic pathologist in Pennsylvania.

Dr. Omalu is an American trained physician, forensic pathologist and neuropathologist. He was the first to publish findings of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in American football players while working at the Allegheny County Coroner’s Office in Pittsburgh. He later became chief medical examiner of San Joaquin County, California, and is a professor in the University of California, Davis, Department of Medical Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.

“Recognizing Dr. Bennet Omalu’s groundbreaking medical research is particularly relevant as we prepare to watch Super Bowl 50,” McNerney said. “Since Dr. Omalu’s discovery, we

now know CTE is a progressive degenerative disease that is found in people who have suffered repetitive brain trauma, including sub-concussive hits that do not show any immediate symptoms.“It is imperative, as a nation, that we support research on CTE and brain injuries to figure out how much high-impact sports are affecting the health of our children and athletes.”Omalu’s discoveries are highlighted in the recently released movie “Concussion” starring Will Smith.

The movie chronicles Omalu’s discoveries and the controversy that has been created from them, especially the NFL’s initial denial there was a problem. On the House floor, McNerney spoke about Omalu’s background, his discovery of CTE and his passion in researching it.

“The Bennet Omalu Foundation, named after Dr. Omalu, is committed to funding research, raising awareness, providing care, and finding cures for people suffering from CTE and traumatic brain injuries,” McNerney said. “I ask my colleagues to join me inhonoring the research and achievements of Dr. Bennet Omalu and all he has done to further the understanding of the human brain.”

Pathologist portrayed by Will Smith in film Concussion believes 90% of NFL players have some form of long-term head trauma. Omalu also thinks the NFL shunned him when he presented the problems to them because he is a foreigner and African-American. 30-Year-Old Nigerian Tech Entrepreneur May Run Apple Out of Business In Africa!

A 30-year-old Nigerian phone entrepreneur by the name of Michael Akindele has been making great strides in the mobile device market — so much so, that he has been challenging tech giants such as Apple. The company, SOLO Phone, was started in 2012, and Akindele serves as director and co-founder. The company is aimed at delivering mobile solutions, services, and platforms to consumers all at a reasonable price. The company’s smartphones are priced at $150 and come with up to 20 million free songs licensed by Sony, Universal, and Warner. Its latest release is an app named Video-On-Demand, available to all Nigerians with an Android device and makes available Nollywood and Hollywood movies. SOLO Phone is making strides in the market and can definitely challenge other giants within the market, believes Akindele.

Akindele was born in the United States to Nigerian parents on Aug. 29, 1984. He returned to Nigeria at two-years-old but returned to the states ten years later. He was educated at Alexandria, Virginia and graduated from T.C. Williams High School, and then moved on to George Mason University in Fairfax. While at George Mason, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree with a focus on computer science and information technology. This gave him the ideal background, knowledge, and platform to building his company His work as a technology consultant at

Accenture also helped him to gain first-hand knowledge in his field. This is where he started working on “The Apprentice: Africa,” which was the American version of Donald Trump’s “The Apprentice.” He returned to Africa in 2007 to help produce, develop, and distribute the show, which gained a huge following in Nigeria, Uganda, Ghana and Kenya during the 18 weeks it was aired on the continent.

Before SOLO Phone, he had a company called Fusion Mobile, but it did not last very long because of a lack of funding and persons not believing in an African manufacturing phone company. Adlevo Capita, however, changed all that in 2013 when they partnered with Akindele. This led to the birth of SOLO.

Tayo Ogundipe is a telecom specialist who led the push to develop the company and has experience working with companies such as Sony Ericsson and HTC. His experience led to the realization of SOLO on Nov. 22, 2013. Since then, the reception from the public has been tremendous, as they seek to provide experiencedriven and strong digital content to both the young and the old. What has been keeping consumers interested and has set SOLO apart from others in the market is the high content and services it provides at such an affordable price. http://www.sundayadelajablog.com

Pregnant Teenager Claims Jesus Christ Is The Father Of Her Baby March

Cincinnati| A 15-year old girl from Ohio claims to be carrying the child of Jesus Christ, after being “divinely impregnated” during an encounter with an angel.

Latifah Smith-Nabengana says she was visited by an “Angel of God” in July 2015, who told her that she had been chosen to bear the Christ’s son.

“He told me that he was a Nephilim, like those described in the Bible,” explained the young girl. “He told that he had a message from Jesus, He said that I was going to be pregnant, and that I would give birth to a son, Jesus’ son.”

Nephilims are indeed mythical creatures mentionned in the Genesis 6:4 : “The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.”

This type of creature have been almost unheard of over the last few thousand years, so the teenager’s claim has surprised everyone in her family when she announced it to them. Being very religious themselves, they rapidly accepted her claim and showed flawless support for the 15-year old. The medical doctor who has been following her pregnancy, Dr. William Franklin Murphy, says he is aware of his patient’s version, but is unable to either confirm or invalidate her claims.

“For all I know, her pregnancy seems normal,” claims the gynecologist. “Her claims of “Virgin pregnancy” are technically true, but that doesn’t mean there was a divine intervention. I can tell you that it’s a boy, but there no way for me to determine if it is Jesus’ son until he is born. If she asks for a DNA test at that time, then we can tell you who the father is.” The teenager’s claim has stirred quite a controversy that has reached far beyond her religious community.

While most people have shown their support to Ms. Smith-Nabengana, others have launched various accusations on the social media, ranging from fabricating the whole story to sleeping with a demonic creature known as an incubus.

Latifah Smith-Nabengana says she wants to demand a paternity test as soon as her son is born, to prove that she is telling the truth. In the meantime, her story will continue to generate a lot debate and stir a lot of emotions across the United States. Source: http://worldnewsdailyreport.com/

Young African Engineer Pioneers Video Game Studio With African Characters!

When children entertain the admiration of mythical super heroes via the consumption of comic books, cartoons, or video games, they identify with racial images and subconsciously label what is positive and negative at a very young age.

For an example, if a white-owned cartoon production company casts black characters as villians and white characters as heroes, black children who consume this entertainment on television will automatically perceive themselves as bad and see their fellow white children as better than them. They’ll also view white people in general as their saviors.

Studies have shown and reality continues to reveal that the images children are bombarded with in various channels of entertainment ultimately influence how they perceive themselves and others. What they see in video games, on televisions shows, or read in books can make them either hate themselves or love themselves. When it comes to black children in particular, it’s important that they see people in their own race as producers of the mythical stories they grow up idolizing. It is fair to surmise that black children deserve an alternative form of entertainment consumption that is produced by people who look like them. Such producers know how to cater to their own kind a lot better and they relate to the black children they seek to inspire. A great example of a man who is doing this in the video game industry exists today. Meet Madiba Olivier (pictured above), a young man from the African nation of Cameroon who is a successful video game developer.

In an event titled “Meet the Nigerian Scientist” organized by the Society, Professor Isa discussed with the Nigerian students in Sussex about their discovery of Nigerian traditional herbs that show substantial efficacy against cancer, better than the currently used cancer drugs. He described to our community how he moved to the US in the late 90’s after his Ph.D. and eventually developed to a competent scientist that received over $5 million of research funds for research into cancer.

Prof. Isa came to the University of Sussex on invitation by the School of Lifesciences of the University, to present his team’s discovery of the potential anti-cancer traditional herbs.

On Friday, 12th March, he was received warmly by the Vice – Chancellor of the University of Sussex, the Head of School of Lifesciences and other Professors, following which he was given a gift by the Vice – Chancellor.

Later in the Friday evening, Professor Isa delivered his research findings at the University’s Genome Damage and Stability Centre to experts and young scientists, in a talk that was brilliantly fascinating, titled – “Exploitation of medicinal plant compounds in the search for novel cancer therapeutic agents.”.

His talk explained how his team investigate the scientific rationale for the tradition uses of Nigerian Medicinal plants. How they now discover novel plants with anti-cancer properties.

They have isolated and characterized the compounds from these plant sources and tested them against many

cancer cell lines. He said “We are working to develop cancer therapy from Nigerian traditional plants. We have conducted an extensive screening of many plants with anti-cancer properties, tested them in cell and animal models. Our research has created an evidence base to demonstrate that eight naturally growing medicinal plants in Nigeria have strong anti-cancer properties, especially against breast cancer.”

Professor Isa also praised the “world-class facilities” at the University of Sussex and discussed possible collaboration with the School of Lifesciences regarding research.

The Nigerian Ag. High Commissioner in London, also attended Professor Isa’s research talk and was very impressed that such research is conducted in Nigeria.

He praised Professor Isa and encouraged him to continue his research as it shows promise for solving world problem and positively influences the global reputation of Nigeria. The Ag. High Commissioner also held a Question and Answer session over Lunch with the Nigerian students in Sussex where he advised them to work hard in their studies and acquire useful skills that can drive the development of Nigeria.

Inspired by Prof. Isa’s talk, the Sussex Nigeria Society have launched a campaign to raise money for the Breast Cancer Association of Nigerian “BRECAN” to help disadvantaged women access free clinical breast examination and towards BRECAN’s awareness-raising campaigns.

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday took stock of his performance for the past 10 months at the helm and concluded that he has effectively charted the course to tackle the myriad of problems bedevilling the nation.

Addressing members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at the national secretariat of the party in Abuja, he cited the significant progress recorded in ensuring the security of lives and property particularly in the troubled North-East geo-political zone as a milestone recorded during the period.

Saying more need to be done to tackle the menace of oil theft and pipeline vandalisation in the oil-rich Niger Delta, he enjoined those behind such dastard act to bury their hatchet and join hands with his administration to build a virile and prosperous Nigeria. President Buhari, who particularly singled out his resolve to implement the Treasury Single Account (TSA) which has put N3 trillion in government kitty as a key dividend of his drive to block leakages in the polity, stated that the N3 trillion would surely come handy in the implementation of this year's N6.07 trillion worth budget.

Citing the controversies that trailed the rerun elections in Rivers, Bayelsa and Kogi states as indications of the inadequacies of the electoral system, he remarked that all hands must be on deck to ensure credibility of the electoral system.

The President further reiterated his commitment to ensure that the anti-graft campaign was in line with the dictates of the rule of law.

President Buhari also pointed out that his administration gave a blanket order, "which we had to rescind when we said all boards are suspended or dissolved. We had to go back and lick our vomit in terms of university boards because we found out that according to their laws, they cannot choose Vice Chancellors unless the Boards sit down, interview prospective candidates who want to be VCs. I wonder why people could not believe that in Nigeria, about 27 of 36 states have difficulty in paying basic salaries of their workers. If from 1999 to at least 2003, oil is above $100 per barrel and an export of about two million barrels per day, how come Nigeria failed to make some arrangement to cushion the effect of a probably volatile oil market?"

Earlier in his welcome address, the National Chairman of the party, Chief John OdigieOyegun, noted that the APC-led administration has recorded giant strides that are worth celebrating.

Said he; "The fight against corruption: the gains are clear, the era of impunity is beginning to disappear from our land. Even from reading the papers, social media, critical as they may be, virtually every Nigerian today now accepts that corruption was perhaps, the worst affliction that this nation has ever suffered from. And of course, finally, the cost of governance is down. So, even with the lean resources, it is clear that all over

You are Beautiful

Akpos attended a church service one Sunday. He sat beside a very ugly girl.

While the pastor was preaching he said, "Tell the person seated next to you that he or she is beautiful"

Akpos immediately stood up and the pastor said, "Where are you going?"

Akpos replied, "I'm changing seats, do you want me to lie in the house of God?"

Surrender

An robber ordered his victim to surrender all the money he had on him. The victim fearfully obeyed.

After collecting the money, the robber asked his victim if he had brought all the money on him.

The victim replied, "yes."

Doubting the victim, the armed robber searched his pockets, finding some money in the inner pocket, the armed robber slapped the victims face and said "don't you know lying is a sin!"

Why I Did not Study

TEACHER: Why didn't you study?

AKPOS: A year has 365 days for you to study. After taking away 52 Sundays, there are only 313 days left. There are 50 days in the summer that is way too hot to work so there are only 263 days left. We sleep 8 hours a day, in a year, that counts up to 122 days so now we're left with 141 days. If we fooled around for only 1 hour a day, 15 days are gone, so we are left with 126 days. We spend 2 hours eating each day, 30 days are used in this way in the year, and we are left with 96 days in our year. We spend 1 hour a day speaking to friends and family, that takes away 15 days more and we are left with 81 days. Exams and tests take up at least 35 days in your year; hence you are only left with 46 days. Taking off approximately 40 days of holidays, you are only left with 6 days.Say you are sick for a minimum of 3 days; you're left with 3 days in the year to study! Let's say you only go out for 2 days...You're left with 1 day. But that 1 day is your birthday. That's why I did not study TEACHER: keep quiet!!!

An American was visiting Nigeria for the first time, so he boarded a taxi from the airport to his hotel, on the way the American saw a beautiful building and asked the driver, "how long did it take to build such beautiful building", the driver was proud of his country and said 6 years, the American replied "nonsense, in my country it will take 6 months to build same building".

They passed by another huge building, the american asked again, "how many years did it take to build the house", the driver replied "2 years", to his shock again the american said, "rubbish, it takes just 2 months to build same building in my country".

They finally passed the National Stadium, and the american was amazed, he asked how long did it take to build such magnificent structure, the driver just looked at him and said "Oga, I don't know o! cos when I passed here this morning, the building wasn't there".

Keeping Your Charge

Dr. Miriam C. Gyimah

A charge to keep I have, A God to glorify, A never dying soul to save And fit it for the sky.

To serve this present age, My calling to fulfill, O, may it all my powers engage To do my Master’s will. I was turning in to bed and wanted to spend a little time with the Lord. I had woken up on this day and got to running around all over to do all that I had on my busy agenda that I didn’t get a chance to do my usual treasured quiet time with the Lord. So before going to bed, I picked up my Bible and even as I closed my eyes to say a quick prayer before reading, out of somewhere, or someone would say, out of nowhere, the above song by Charles Wesley came. I began singing it though I thought it interesting that such a song should make its way through my throat since, although I know it, I hardly ever sing it. As I sang the first verse, which I know by heart, I thought to myself, what is my charge? And as if I knew it already, the spontaneous response from within me was “to worship God in spirit and in truth.” (John 4:24) Our charge to keep, our purpose, our reason for being, is to worship God and worship Him in spirit and in truth. We are not to worship Him simply from our flesh as in using our hands, voices or bodies as gestures or out of self and ego, but to worship Him in spirit. Worshiping God in spirit means our spirit must be shed of any ills and self-will and connect with the Spirit of God where we unite as one, even as He comes to inhabit in our praises. So just as the angels in heaven worship the Almighty God around the clock as it is attested in the book of Revelations, so also must we worship Him. One may ask, how do we worship Him like the angels since unlike the angels, we are charged with the never-ending task to work and take care of our families? While it might be true that we may not have the privilege or even the stamina to worship the Lord around the clock, the charge to keep still remains. And so aside from our daily communication, praise and worship of God, aside from our quiet times and attending church services, our charge, our worshiping of God is simply working in His vineyard. Plainly put, worshiping God is being serviceable to Him with the very talents and gifts that He has graciously endowed us.

Our charge is to be connected to Him in service always. Writing this last sentence itself makes my heart leap with affirmation, because the Lord is drawing me closer to understand Him and His intended ongoing relationship, role and purpose with and for us. You see, the parable of the talents (Mathew 25: 14-30) is very telling because even as the master gave one, two and five talents to three different servants, He intended them to use them and make something of them until he returned. And by using the talents, these servants were in essence worshiping God, for they were being of service to God with their very lives, for they have been entrusted with a stake in the Kingdom of God. So yes, we all have a stake in the Kingdom of God and we are to take charge of it by committing our gifts to use and use them effectively, impactfully, and in spirit and in truth. We are not to be like the one servant who did not utilize his one talent but rather buried it. The act of using my gift of writing and communication, my gift of administration and organization within the church and even within the community for the purposes of these entities’ progression and betterment is a form of worship. Using these gifts and talents in these spaces for positive impact and in keeping with the word of God is us doing our part in God’s kingdom. Preaching and teaching the word of God in the church, streets and other venues, if that is your rightful talent, is keeping your charge. Even teaching and administering in the public or private schools, where you have an impact on the knowledge and growth of your students in the expansion of their talents, abilities and minds, preparing them to become responsible and knowledgeable members of the world’s community, is a form of worship and it is consistent with keeping your charge. If your part is catering services within the church, where you provide food and refreshments for visitors, Sunday school students, or for church anniversaries and special occasions, know that you are keeping your charge; you are worshiping The Lord your God. All these are in fact ministries and by committing to your ministry, you are making an impact in improving and furthering the work of God. Now, having said all of this, let us be aware that while each and every one of us have been purposed to have talents and gifts and to bear influence in this our world, for however long we are here, there will be challenges and hindrances to thwart the progression and success that the Lord has intended for you. These challenges and hindrances can come from ourselves, as in our laziness, our procrastination, our unprofessionalism, our sloppiness, our pride, our improper or even abusive means by which we treat these talents and our work, not keeping in mind the privilege with which we have been honored and the responsibility with which we have been entrusted. Why do you oppress with your gift instead of liberate? Why are you so permissive and not employ reasonable guidelines and standards for yourself and others that you lose your moral ground and the respect of your labor? How does that make your gift effective? It is rather compromised. A compromised output is not keeping your charge; it is not worshiping in spirit and in truth. Attempts to thwart our ministries, our worship, and our charge will also surely come from outside forces, physical and spiritual. You see, it is God’s

M a r c h 2016

desire to use us effectively even as He has endowed us, but it is Satan’s, our chief adversary’s, intention and purpose to prevent us from fulfilling our life’s work, our charge, our worship in spirit and truth to divert us to a useless, barren end and even destruction. So when you are busy working for the Lord in the church, community or at work and individuals here and there clandestinely or even overtly try to trip you, know that the enemy is at work and is wishing your ineffectiveness, discredit, and even plotting your downfall. He or she does not want you to succeed simply because of envy or jealousy. They despise the glory that God has bestowed upon you and wish it were theirs. They resent the respect you have from your peers and community and want to separate you from it. It is an evil intention, but it is real and it is at work. So while you are busily and happily at work for God, be vigilant; be wise and be in tune with your God each and every day even as He directs you to navigate those bumps and hurdles which He knows will surely be there as you utilize your talents for His glory. Remember, keeping your charge is worshiping Him in spirit and in truth. It is not performing your role to bring attention to yourself, to demonstrate how good you are although you might be very good. It is not about the accolades that will be showered upon you. It is not the appellations that will flow out of the mouths of people about you. Keeping your charge, glorifying your God with your talent, and fulfilling your part in this great world, is not at all about you, but all about your God and Creator and His intention for all of creation. You are the vessel and if the vessel is made beautiful by the Potter, know that the vessel is a tool created for a purpose. Too many people want to know what is in it for them when they do this and they do that. What am I going to get out of it? What is the church going to give me? What rewards or acknowledgements will my service to my job place and my community yield me? Well, then why should I do it if there is nothing in it for me? If this is your thinking, then you don’t know and clearly do not understand your purpose in relationship to your Creator. If this is your mentality, then clearly you have not heard of nor read the parable of the talents or perhaps you have but you have simply rejected the teaching. What is beautiful is God’s plan and intention for all of His creation. What is beautiful is that God the Creator has intentionally created and breathed in all of us, as worshiping and working beings, a multiplicity of talents and gifts to take part in this great world of His own making, giving us all a mission and assignments for the tenure of our lives as a means to worship and be a living part of His vision. But what is more beautiful is that while we are all working in this great vineyard, while we are all worshiping Him in truth and in spirit through our multiple means, He works alongside us, “for we are co-laborers with God” (I Corinthians 3:9). The Bible tells us, He inhabits in the praises of His people (Psalm 22:3), so let us be mindful that even our work is a living testament to God. Even our work invokes the presence of God each and every moment that we are performing it. So let us take joy, let us take pride, let us have purpose and good intention and put forth our very best effort each and every time we step in our roles to perform our duties. Let us not get in our own way with sloppy, careless and half-hearted service. And let us not let our enemies hinder our work and defer our mission. Let us know that we have a “charge to keep,” “a God to glorify,” “a calling to fulfill,” “to serve this present age” and “to do our Master’s will.”

Popular Misconceptions About Pastor’s Wives!

27

Misconception #4 You must be friends with everyone.

Misconception #1 You have it all together. You’ve worked through all your issues. Sure, you may struggle, but not with anything major (whatever that may be).

Oh, sister, may I encourage you? On this side of heaven, we will always have battle to do with our flesh. Will he give relief at times? Yes! But “if we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us” (1 John 1:8). We are off the hook—not to sin so that grace may abound—but to freely live a life pleasing to God that was bought by the perfect blood of Christ, not our own blood, sweat and tears to “get it right.”

Three years into Matt’s position as pastor of The Village Church, I entered a 12-step program. Let me quell the questions: It wasn’t because he became a pastor that I “worked the steps.” I needed to recover from the addiction of being a good girl, of performing my way into God’s good graces. I would have said with my lips that salvation is by grace through faith alone. I even thought I believed this at my core. But in my heart of hearts, I functioned as if it all depended on me. With my life, I said, “God, thanks for saving me but I’ve got it from here.”

On a Thursday night, in front of people who only knew me as their pastor’s wife, I stood up with others to say, “There’s something the Lord is asking me to surrender.” The weight of what people would think of me nearly glued me to my seat, preventing me from standing.

But guess what I felt the moment I rose to my feet? Weightlessness. Relief. And tears. Lots and lots of tears. In all my worry about what the people of The Village would think of me—the gasps I imagined, the whispers—what I found instead was fellowship. I wasn’t the untouchable and unrelatable. I became real to them.

Really in need of a real Savior.

Misconception #2 Your gifting should match your husband’s.

Although you and your husband are one flesh, you are not the

same person. The way God made you is different than how he made your husband. God knew what he was doing in putting the two of you together. He doesn’t make mistakes.

By God’s grace, be the best “you” you can be. Do you enjoy hosting people in your home? Do you love to teach? Do you come alive when you just get to sit across from another woman pouring out her heart?

Matt is an exceptional preacher and teacher. I have received and accepted multiple invitations to speak and teach, but it is not a burning desire within me. I find myself saying “no” more often than “yes.” To lead worship, on the other hand, is something I eagerly desire to do. It excites me to lead 500 people in song. Matt loves to sing, but, trust me, you don’t want him leading worship in song. I am not him and he is not me, praise Jesus. Misconception #3 You can kiss having close friends goodbye.

There is wisdom in carefully choosing to whom you disclose your hopes, desires and struggles, especially when doing so sheds light on your husband’s flaws. Not everyone can handle such information with grace and maturity. Don’t buy the lie, though, that you can have no close friends. This will only isolate you and your husband from good fellowship with other believers. Everyone in your church should know that you and your husband are sinners, not because you blatantly participate in sinful acts but because of 1 John 1:8.

My closest friends for the past 12 years have all either been married to staff, on staff or covenant members of our church. I have dear friends who are also in ministry in other cities, states and even countries, but there is something special to having day-in, day-out friends. They see the inconsistencies in my life and are able to speak into it.

Have there been awkward seasons and disagreements? Yes! But God’s steadfast love has shone the most brilliantly when we addressed the awkward and generously forgave and loved one another in the middle of the mess.

How is this working for you? Even if you’re not a pastor’s or minister’s wife, how deeply are you able to know everyone with whom you come into contact? It’s impossible to be the same kind of friend to everyone. You can try it, but most—if not all—of your relationships will be an inch deep. We are limited! It’s a practice in humility to acknowledge that we can’t be everyone’s close friend and must trust the Lord to meet that need in us and them.

That being said, if your friend circle is so tight that it hasn’t changed in years, do some examination. Is your group of friends hospitable or alienating? You can’t control what others think, but you can be warm, amiable and willing to be flexible, guarding against trading depth for width.

Misconception #5 Your kids are the most sanctified in your church.

Our faith is not an inheritable trait. Although our homes should model what Scripture outlines for a family, our children are individuals with their own faiths. As my husband often says, we can gather all the kindling we can find around their hearts: family devotions, talking of Scripture as we go, modeling forgiveness by asking for it and giving it freely, expressing our own need for the Savior, and praying for their salvation. But, it takes a movement of the Holy Spirit to ignite the flame of faith.

Our kids are like anyone else’s. They are going to fail. They will choose poorly. My kids are at church a lot. They know all the nooks and crannies, all the stashes of mints and crackers. The staff knows them and they know the staff. This comfort factor can often get them in trouble. Unlike most of the nonstaff kids at church, they let their guards down. They don’t feel the need to be on their best behavior. Although we train them to be respectful, they have their moments—as we all do. They’re in need of Jesus as much as the next kid.

This Nigerian Lady Failed WAEC 5 Times; Today She’s A Graduate With First Class!

but I didn’t pass all my papers at once until 2008. I could have combined results but I didn’t want that, so, I kept trying till I had it all at one sitting. That’s why I thank God for having someone like my father because he understood what I wanted and supported me. He has always been very supportive of our academics and I’ll always be grateful to him. He didn’t despise me because I didn’t have my papers at once. He encouraged me and stood by me. I later got admission in 2010.

If you work hard rather than expecting miracle to marry a rich man or rich woman, soon you will overtake even those you are looking up to.

Read the story of Alaboh Anthonia who sat for WAEC 6 times, today she’s DELSU first class graduate: 27yrs old Anthonia is the second best graduate from Delta State University, Abraka, in the 2014/2015 academic session, and she graduated from the Department of Mathematics with 4.70 CGPA. She shares her experience with Punch’s Tunde Ajaja.

How was your growing up? My growing up wasn’t easy at all. I was nine years old when my parents divorced, so as the first of three children, I had to assume the role of a mother for my siblings. There were lots of challenges but I’m grateful to God for my dad and everyone who assisted in making us who we are today. Coping with numerous house chores, balancing that with my academics and having to do the things I wasn’t used to before were all very stressful for me as a child but I thank God who saw me through. My dad was also very supportive, even though he lost his job about that time too, we managed. My teen pastor in church also used to counsel me.

Did it affect your performance in school? Not really, even though I won’t rule out the psychological effect of seeing my parents separate. But overall, I didn’t do badly. In my secondary school, I was doing well but my position in the class was like 21 out of 50. I wasn’t so much an excellent student then.

How easy was it passing your WASSCE and UTME and how many sittings? JAMB was not a challenge for me but when I first wrote the WAEC, I had just two credits; Mathematics and English while I failed the rest. I don’t know why it happened that way. I kept writing the exam until I had my papers in one sitting at the sixth attempt. I finished from secondary school in 2002,

As a child and in the midst of all that happened, what did you dream to become? My dream was to be a lawyer and human rights activist so I could fight against the military government. But, as time went on and democratic government was in place, my love for science, especially mathematics, grew. So, my dream changed to being either a computer scientist or a teacher. So, I chose to study mathematics and my dad was supportive. He was happy that I chose teaching, and he suggested I could settle for being a lecturer instead.

How easy was it to have a first class? Having a first class wasn’t easy at all; it involves discipline, determination, sacrifices, above all, God’s grace, mercy and favour. I never thought I would graduate with a first class, not to talk of being the second best in the school, but after seeing my 100L result, I had 4.33 and I felt I could put in more effort and have a better result. When I got to school, I planned not to go to parties or the beach. I didn’t venture into things that could waste my time, I had a concrete and workable plan for each day, I decided to start reading as soon as lectures began and I tried to have foreknowledge of my courses by studying ahead. I also had friends who had first class and I learnt from them. When I had 4.33 in 100L first semester, I was happy but the people I told encouraged me that with more effort, I could make first class. My friends believed in me and they told me I needed to do more. They told me the benefits of having a first class and that the opportunities awaiting first class were enormous, including job offer and scholarship. They said Delta State Government used to give its indigent first class graduates N5m, but that was then. However, without those things, I still have joy that I achieved it. I started having first class in 200L. I had 5.0 in my first semester and 4.85 in second semester. Since then, I had to maintain it. What was your typical day like as an undergraduate? I was either in the hostel, in the class receiving lectures, in the fellowship or sometimes in the library. I had a timetable for reading and my standard duration was six hours, two hours each during the day, in the evening and in the midnight. Naturally, I don’t sleep for long. In the night, I might wake twice or thrice so it was an advantage for me. Initially, I never liked the idea of going to the library to read, as time and courses grew tough, I started using the library because I needed to use some textbooks. Gradually, I became addicted to the library.

Were you involved in other school activities? Yes, I was involved mostly in the fellowship as a chorister. I was in different units in the fellowship, including prayer, evangelism, home cell and academic unit. I was the director in 400l, I was among the committee that organised the first national mathematics conference hosted by our school as the exhibition coordinator.

What was your most memorable moment in school? My happiest moment was when our former head of department shook my hand in 100L. I went to the department to check my result and when the person in charge was calling my grades and there were many As (distinctions), the HOD was in his office, so when he heard someone having As, he came out to see who had such an impressive result. He shook my hand and congratulated me. That was the first time I would be having a close contact with him and he was someone I looked up to because I heard he also had a first class, so I wanted to be like him and I’m happy I achieved that. What are your aspirations? I would like to further my education till I become a professor in applied mathematics, have my PGD in education, learn one or two programmes and establish my own school. I have always loved teaching and I found that I have joy imparting knowledge in others. I intend to change people’s perspective towards mathematics especially students in primary and secondary school. I like them to know that mathematics is easy. What is your advice to students? My advice is that they should be determined, live a purposeful life because today’s input determines tomorrow’s output. They should believe in themselves, think big, don’t assume they know certain things; they should be sure they know, and above all, know God.
