Africa's Richest Man, Cadman Kojo Atta Mills Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Pays Courtesy Call on To Replace Ohene Liberian President Sirleaf; Agyekum as Ambassador Proposed Cement and Coal-Burning Power Plants among to the United States

Afrikan Post

Topics Discussed

His Excellency Daniel Ohene Agyekum, Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States of America, concluded his tour of duty on January 31st, 2014.

Pending the arrival of his successor, Mrs. Amma A. Twum-Amoah, Minister/Head of Chancery will act as Charge d’ Affaires.

Dr Cadman Mills, who was an economic advisor to his late brother, replaces Daniel Ohene Agyekum as Ambassador to the United States of America in Washington DC.

Mr Ohene Agyekum, former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NDC, is now chairman of Cocobod.

President Mahama is waiting for clearance from the U.S government to enable the Ghana government to issue thim his letter of credence for him to proceed to the United States for his diplomatic duties.

Africa’s richest man, billionaire Alhaji Aliko Dangote, paid a courtesy call, Thursday, on President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf at her Foreign Ministry Office, where he briefed her on the progress of his investment in Liberia.

According to an Executive Mansion release, the two discussed ongoing arrangements for a cement plant which the billionaire’s company, Dangote Cement Liberia Ltd., intends to commence building in Liberia shortly, as well as plans for a coal-based power plant that would greatly reduce the cost of, and access to, electricity in the country.

Mr. Dangote, a Nigerian, is ranked by Forbes Magazine as the 43rd richest person in the world, and the richest man in Africa.

Concerning the cement processing plant, Mr. Dangote informed the President that seven acres of land have been identified at the Freeport of Monrovia for its construction and a jetty. After a three-year delay, it was time to move ahead with the project, he said. He assured the President that the limestone needed for the cement – which Liberia does not produce – would be brought in, and crushed and ground for the manufacture of cement locally.

As for electricity, Mr. Dangote said that his proposed coalburning power plant would produce some 20 megawatts of power, but his operations would require only 1.2 megawatts. The excess could be sold to the government at no more than12 cents per kilowatt hour. “Tell us what you need, and we will produce it,” he said of the power-generation capacity of the plant, which he said could be operational in 15 months. Approximately 30 acres of land are needed for such a facility, which includes huge boilers and cooling plants, along with access to a source of sweet water – where the water table is high.

Mr. Dangote pointed out that throughout Africa, the major issue is power. “No power, no growth,” he declared. Any economy will climb to double digits, once there is power at the right price, he said. With affordable power people will produce products locally, will gravitate to the private sector, leading to the creation of a middle class. He recommended coal-based power plants, noting that there is plenty of coal in South Africa, Mozambique and Guinea, and that with today’s technology, emissions of coal dust is at zero level.

Responding, President Sirleaf agreed that it was time to go forward and fast-track the cement project, assuring Mr. Dangote that the land would be turned over by February 16.

Concerning electricity, she spoke of the 54 cents Liberians pay per kilowatt hour, and said that three heavy fuel oil (HFO) power plants will soon come on stream. She pointed out that hydro represents the best form of power generation for Liberia, because of the abundance of rainfall and the many rivers, although other sources would be needed in the dry season. This, she said, could be addressed through an upstream dam producing some 1,000 megawatts of power. To determine exactly how much power the country would need, she said, the experts would need to study ongoing systems as well as those coming on stream. She invited Mr. Dangote to send his engineers to study the feasibility of building the coalbased power plant.

Among other topics discussed at the meeting were: the need for a Schengen-type visa in Africa, to facilitate travel between countries, particularly for business people; Liberia’s harmonization of tariffs in keeping with ECOWAS protocols; and the production of basic commodities such as rice, sugar and other consumables. Accompanying Mr. Dangote were: Mrs. Medina Wesseh, the International Law Group’s Legal Consultant; and Mr. Bairappa Kashinath, Chief Engineer. President Sirleaf’s team included: Dr. Edward B. McClain, Jr., Minister of State for Presidential Affairs; Mr. Michael Wotorson, Chairman of the National Investment Commission; and Ms. Ciatta Bishop, outgoing Executive Director of the NIC, who will shortly assume her new position as Director-General of the National Bureau of Concessions. Somali Limo Driver Nominated For Couples Are Paying Over $3000 To Oscars; It's His Turn To Be Driven Have Mixed Race Kids In Ghana In A Limo! February 2014

Somali-born Barkhad Abdi holds an interesting tale close to his chest. In fact, he is a limo driver who has been nominated in this year's Academy Awards, better known as the Oscars.

The 28-year-old's dramatic shift from being a mere limo driver in Minnesota, USA to an Oscar-nominated actor is a truly inspirational story.

Barkhad Abdi has been nominated in the 'Best Actor in a Supporting Role' category of this year's Oscars for his role in the movie 'Captain Phillips' which also stars award winning actor Tom Hanks.

The movie tells the true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years.

The people standing in Barkhad's way to making history at the Oscars include Bradley Cooper for 'American Hustle'; Michael Fassbender for '12 Years a Slave'; Jonah Hill, for 'The Wolf of Wall Street'; and Jared Leto for 'Dallas Buyers Club'.

'Escaping Somali's war fields to living the American dream'

The Oscar-nominated actor shared an interesting story of how he escaped war-torn Somalia in 1991, won an American Visa Lottery and and now living the American dream in an interview with the BBC.

"I was born in Somalia and by the age of seven years old, the war started in Mogadishu, Somalia where I was. The war started and I was stuck there for about a year," before his mother found a way to get himself and his siblings out of that country through Ethiopia to Bosaso, a city in the northeastern Bari region of Somalia.

About two years back, Abdi was selected from an open casting call in Minneapolis, to co-star with Tom Hanks in the 'Captain Phillips' movie. He travelled to London and Malta for the shooting and since the film’s release in 2013, the Somali's fame has soared..

Asked how he was able to play his role with such agility, Barkhad explained that, "For me it was becoming the character. If you understand the desperations and motivations of the character then you are able to be the character and you are able to show his emotions."

'Negative portrayal of Africa'

'Captain Philips' highlights one of Africa's numerous dark sides. With the pressure of being accused of helping paint a dark image for the continent, Barkhad, who also received a Golden Globe nomination for the movie, explained that his focus was on the fact that it was a true story.

"Before I got the part, there [were] a lot of rumors going around in Minneapolis that they are going to embarrass Somali people and this is not the right way to [portray them] but that's not how I looked at it. To me this is a true story that [happened] and I understand the motivations they have," the former limo driver said.

He noted that the movie captures a true life situation and added that, if the jobless guy who are struggling to make a living, "sees with his own eyes people [becoming] millionaires [through] piracy, that is more than enough motivation to go all out and take the risk."

The 86th edition Academy Awards comes off at the Hollywood's Dolby Theatre on Sunday, March 2 and win or lose, Barkhad Abdi is already a winner in his own right.

According to reports, mixed race baby business is booming in the beautiful city of Accra in Ghana. With $3,000, you can have a mixed race baby without having sex with a person of a different race.Ghanaian journalist Stephen Kwabena Effah writes about this crazy new trend on Infoboxx.com

In Ghana, they are regarded as hotcakes. Their complexion put them on a fairly higher pedestal, as they are the ones every guy or lady craves to date – the half-caste!

But ever thought that a time will come for halfcaste babies to be bred in Ghana? Well, thanks to modern science, one can have a half-caste or mixed-race baby without necessarily having to marry or have sexual intercourse with a person of different race.

Following in the steps of artificial insemination, a novel venture to create a new society –‘Half-caste World’- on the African continent is bourgeoning in Ghana’s capital, Accra.

As ridiculous as it may seem, considering the fact that the word ‘half-caste’ denigrate one’s status in society, especially in Europe and the Americas, advocates of this enterprise believe the creation of this breed of people of bi-racial identity positions Africa for a better future.

“Half-caste World is founded to transform Africa into the land of riches and beauty, the land of every man’s dream. We believe life began in

Page 7

African and will end in Africa,” the advocates posted on their Facebook page.

The campaign is targeting both African couples and single women who are desirous of giving birth to half-caste babies the opportunity of a lifetime at a relatively affordable cost.

Six exchange alumni who have made significant impacts in their home countries will travel to the United States beginning January 27 to participate in the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) Gold Stars initiative.

Gold Star participants have made important contributions in their home countries as a direct result of ideas that originated during – or were inspired by – their first IVLP exchange program. Through short-term visits to the United States, IVLP allows current and emerging foreign leaders in a variety of fields to experience the United States firsthand and cultivate lasting relationships with their American counterparts. The Gold Star initiative brings these participants back to share their successes, reconnect with Americans who inspired them, and network as a means to start new initiatives in their home countries.

This year’s Gold Star participants come from Latvia, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestinian Territories, and Vietnam. More information on the participants can be found on the Gold Stars Tumblr blog.

Chinyelu “Chichi” Okafor participated in the “2009 Women and Entrepreneurship” IVLP and returned to Nigeria inspired to make a difference in her community. Impressed by the influence that IGNITE (Inspiring Girls Now in Technology Evolution) had on teenage girls in the United States to pursue careers in science and technology, Okafor launched an IGNITE program in Lagos in 2010 which has impacted more than 200 girls in 20 schools. She has plans to expand the program throughout Nigeria and is particularly interested in outreach to Muslim youth. Okafor is a leading Nigerian businesswoman who is serious about her role as a mentor to other women in the business community. Her pursuits include working on training sessions to encourage female entrepreneurs, coordinating events which are designed to ensure that women have a voice in the business community, serving as the co-chair of the Nigerian Chapter of Women Corporate Directors, and playing an active role in the Nigerian Association for IVLP Alumni. Okafor embodies the spirit of female professional leadership to which many aspire. She is a dynamic public speaker and is able to effectively combine her passion for business and technology.

Pastor Bans Weave Wearing Women From His Church

Things just got real for the Resurrecting Faith church in Waco, Texas. A.J. Amir the founding pastor has banned the female leadership of his church from wearing weaves. Aamir says women who wear weaves have low self esteem and he wants them to embrace who they really are.

Aamir told America Preachers: “Our black women are getting weaves trying to be something and someone they are not. Be real with yourself is all I’m saying.” Aamir, who grew up in a strict Muslim household says he wants his congregation, where the average age of members is just 22 years old, to focus on what he deems as more important things than the hair on their heads. Aamir is also concerned that his parishioners are spending too much money on hair. “Long hair don’t care. What kind of mess is that? I don’t want my members so focused on what’s on their heads and not IN their heads. I lead a church where our members are struggling financially. I mean really struggling. Yet, a 26 year old mother in my church has a $300 weave on her head. NO. I will not be quiet about this.” Aamir is clear that he cannot legally ban anyone from wearing weaves, he still highly disapproves of it.

I know some folks are going to be mad about this one. And rightly so. We all have our own preferences and notions about different hair types but sometimes, it would really be best if we kept those thoughts to ourselves. Wearing weaves doesn’t equate to low self esteem or that a person’s mind is inherently shallow or lacks substance, no more than it means a woman who wears her own hair or is natural is somehow enlightened. At the end of the day, a person’s hair is only going to tell you so much about them. And perhaps that’s what Aamir is missing here. And furthermore, there’s just something so controlling and distasteful about a man telling women how they can and can’t wear their own hair. I understand Aamir is focused on the mental and financial well being of his staff and congregation; but he should really devote his time, energy and effort to feeding his members spiritually and trust that their beauty standards and financial decisions will line up, even if he doesn’t agree with them. Mandela, who spoke often about the importance of education, left about $9,000 to every school he attended, plus two others in areas where he lived.

Johannesburg — Mandela's will is more than a dry account of who gets what. The 40-page document he wrote in 2004 reflects that he was a meticulous and generous man.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu has surprised South Africans by announcing the formation of a gay political party called the Democratic Religious Alliance Against Minority Antagonism (DRAAMA). The party is set to take part in a general election later this year.

Last year Tutu outraged Christians when he declared: “I would refuse to go to a homophobic heaven…No, I would say sorry, I mean I would much rather go to hell…I would not worship a God who is homophobic and that is how deeply I feel about this.”

The Nobel Peace Prize laureate and South African archbishop emeritus added that he does not believe religion provides justification for homophobia.

His passion on the issue has led him to form the world’s first gay political party to address an issue which he feels president Jacob Zuma “tiptoes” around.

The first and last time we ever heard president Jacob Zuma addressing issues around anti-homophobia was when he had to make a public apology regarding a damaging statement he made about this minority group.

In a media statement released on Wednesday, DRAAMA said it is set to be at the forefront of minority human-rights issues the current ruling party has dragged its feet in addressing.

According to report: “With gay socialite and choreographer Somizi Mhlongo being poached as the party’s spin doctor, South Africans should brace themselves for a lot of DRAAMA!!!”

Said Mhlongo: “I was pleasantly surprised upon receiving a call from the honourable Archbishop Desmond Tutu informing me of his intentions and his request for my involvement.”

Before his election as South African President Jacob Zuma was forced to apologise after offending the gay community.

He was quoted as saying that same-sex marriages were: “A disgrace to the nation and to God.”

He also said that when he was a young man, he would have knocked down any homosexual person he met.

He later retracted his words and explained: “My remarks were made in the context of the traditional way of raising children … I said the communal upbringing of children in the past was able to assist parents to notice children with a different social orientation. I however did not intend to have this interpreted as a condemnation of gays and lesbians.”

He also said he respected: “The sterling contribution of many gay and lesbian compatriots in the struggle that brought about our freedom.”

Executors for Mandela's estate, which they valued at $4.1 million, say the assets will mostly go to his family from his three marriages. He also made bequests to the African National Congress party, former staff members and schools.

One of the will's executors, South Africa's Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke, said the will is long.

"I think you will find it quite an interesting read. Because quite often he expresses why he makes virtually every bequest, so it is part of the reason it would run to so many pages," he explained, "because he tries to have a rational ground for making the bequest, a rational and emotional ground, but nonetheless an explained one."

Moseneke said he was not aware of any legal challenges to the will. Executors read the document to Mandela's family before appearing before journalists. The large family, which has previously been embroiled in legal squabbles over the former president's wealth and wishes, left without speaking to reporters.

Last month, family members publicly squabbled over who will lead the family. Moseneke said the will does not address family power positioning.

University of the Witwatersrand Vice Chancellor Adam Habib said his decision to leave money to an institution that discriminated against him as a student is telling.

"Well it is ironic," noted Habib, "I have been on record as saying that Wits apologizes for that. His experience at Wits was both positive and negative. It was positive, if you look at his biography, he says that it opened him up to ideas, but it was also negative in the sense that he was treated badly.

" And I do not think we should hide that," he added. " I think we should recognize that and we should learn the lessons from that. ... The will is quite clear that is for scholarships and for bursaries. And that is exactly what we will dedicate it to. We will dedicate it to addressing or contributing to addressing the challenge of inequality."

One of Mandela's oldest friends, lawyer George Bizos, who also served as an executor, said the document is a reflection of an extraordinary man.

"He gave reasons why he wanted to give to educational institutions, because he wanted people, disadvantaged throughout their lives, to really be treated in a way as human beings," he told reporters as he wiped tears from his face. "This was his credo, this is what he hoped for all of us." More on This

While declaring the support of the people of the state for Jonathan, Obi said, “You have excess credit in your political account that these people (members of the delegation) are ready to pay you when you need it.”

President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday expressed the belief that with the measures put in place by his administration, especially the new National Automotive Industry Policy; the country would soon be exporting cars to other countries. Jonathan spoke at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, while granting audience to a delegation of the business community from Anambra State led by Governor Peter Obi.

In responding to an address by the delegation, the President said, “I will refer all the issues you raised to the various departments of government. We are totally committed to creating jobs. Nigeria is a country with huge population of youths. If jobs are not created, there will be crisis. The housing, agriculture and power sectors are also receiving attention.

“In the next few years, Nigeria will begin to export cars to other countries. We are encouraging the government to support local manufacturers.”

Jonathan promised that the industrialists’ basic needs such as roads, power and port facilities would be addressed appropriately.

He said if Nigeria must become great as expected by all, the Federal Government must industrialise the nation.

To this end, he said his administration would continue to encourage industrialists in the country.

“If any country will be great, we must industrialise. If Nigeria must be a great country, we must industrialise. To this end, we will continue to encourage industrialists in Anambra,” the President added.

The governor said he led the delegation to express their support for the President and bring to his attention some of the industrialists’ collective, which if addressed, would help in anchoring the growth and development of industry in the state.

Some of the needs, according to him, are the completion of the 330/132/33KV power substation at Nnewi; provision of uninterrupted power supply in the Onitsha Harbour Industrial Area and Ozubulu Industrial Hub; completion of the Nnamdi Azikwe Teaching Hospital, Nnewi; and the inclusion of Anambra State in the rail master plan.

Obi also made a case for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of federal roads within the state such as the Oba-Nnewi-Okigwe Section 1, NnewiOkija, start of Onitsha Second Niger Bridge, completion of the Onitsha-Enugu dual carriageway and completion of the Umueze-Anam Kogi road.

The governor also thanked the President for the inclusion of Nnewi in the National Automotive Industry Policy of the Federal Government.

The White House is pleased to announce that the United States will host the first U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit in Washington, DC on August 5 and 6, 2014. President Obama looks forward to welcoming leaders from across the African continent to the Nation’s Capital to further strengthen ties with one of the world’s most dynamic and fastest-growing regions. The Summit will build on the progress made since the President’s trip to Africa last summer, advance the Administration’s focus on trade and investment in Africa, and highlight America’s commitment to Africa’s security, its democratic development, and its people. Rockefeller Foundation Tackling Youth Unemployment in Africa

Rockefeller Foundation president Judith Rodin appeared on CNBC’s Squawk Box to talk about our goal to tackle youth unemployment through our Digital Jobs Africa initiative.

“In most countries in the world, youth employment is at least twice the percentage of the overall unemployment rate. More importantly, the data show that if a young person is unemployed for more than a year, it affects the trajectory over their life course…The youth population in Africa in the next 30 years is going to grow from 200 million to 400 million. That’s a recipe for economic opportunity or for real social unrest, and we’ve got to get ahead of it.”

Impacting One Million Lives in Africa

The current pace of job creation in Africa cannot meet the demands of the world’s fastest growing youth population.

Digital Jobs Africa aims to impact 1 million lives in six countries in Africa by catalyzing sustainable Information Communication Technology-enabled (ICT) employment opportunities and skills training for high potential but disadvantaged African youth, thereby generating social and economic opportunities for those employed, their families and communities. The Foundation will work in close partnership with other stakeholders – private sector, government, civil society and the development community – to leverage significant funds and align complementary programs in order to achieve the impact goal.

Our Strategy Digital Jobs Africa will seize the opportunity presented by the youth bulge in Africa and the phenomenal rise of the Information Communication Technology (ICT) sector to bring about sustainable impact, through job creation. To achieve its goal, Digital Jobs Africa will focus on three targeted interventions:

• Grow the Impact Sourcing sector by encouraging and enabling the private sector to incorporate the practice into their business model and identify other digital job opportunities beyond Impact Sourcing • Skills development and training to prepare young people for digital jobs such as data entry, service center support, online research, tagging audio and video files, and learning Android and iOS platforms • Support an enabling environment for digital jobs

Key Outcomes Digital Jobs Africa will seek to:

Countries Digital Jobs Africa will focus on six African countries where the Foundation believes our efforts will have the greatest impact— Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa.

Egypt has the second largest service sector in Africa—$250 billion—comprising nearly half of the Egyptian economy for output and employment. Egypt has been ranked very high as a promising BPO market.

Ghana’s service sector has grown rapidly over the past decade—now representing over 50% of the country’s GDP. Ghana is rated highly as an attractive Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) location by the AT Kearney index for attractive BPO locations, and is promising for the growth of the Impact Sourcing sector.

Kenya has a track-record of yielding ground-breaking innovations such as MPESA a mobile money transfer service which employs over 50,000 people. Kenya is the regional hub for trade and finance and has largest service sector in East Africa which has added 500,000 jobs since 2005.

Morocco has one of the largest service sectors in Africa, representing over half of the country’s overall GDP, and employing around 40% of the labor force. Already a well-established BPO destination, there is an opportunity to expand this work to include Impact Sourcing.

Nigeria is home to 50% of Africa’s largest corporations, and is now the second largest economy in sub-Saharan Africa. With an economy that is expected to surpass South Africa as the largest during the next decade, Nigeria already has a strong service sector – making up about 30% of the country’s overall outputs.

South Africa is the largest and most well developed economy in Africa—home to many large corporations and a GDP of over $560 billion. South Africa has the largest service sector in the continent, and represents one of the largest markets for Impact Sourcing in the world today.

Bruce allegedly conspired with local drug dealers to distribute the medication to Las Vegas area customers who abused the drugs.

If convicted, Bruce faces up to 20 years in prison and $1 million in fines. 5 African Countries to Watch in 2014

February 2014

BY STEPHEN HAYES

Washington, DC — These countries can make a big difference for the continent this year.

As African reporting goes, most eyes in 2014 will likely be on the major economic powers such as Nigeria, South Africa and Kenya, or on the crises that continue to spring up on the continent, primarily in Central Africa and South Sudan. However, there are several other nations that are worth watching as they may be harbingers of Africa's future development. Here are five countries that can make a big difference for the continent in 2014 under the right conditions and circumstances.

Mozambique:

One of the world's

largest reservoirs of natural gas, as well as oil reserves, has been discovered off the coast of Mozambique.

The discovery has enormous implications not only for Mozambique but also southern and eastern Africa. In the reserves is enough gas to cover southern Africa's power needs for generations; this has the potential to make the country as rich as those on the Arabian peninsula. The key will be how well the nation's leaders use the reserves for the benefit of its population. Mozambique remains in some ways, as it has since its civil war, a divided nation. The ruling party is largely in the south and the minority party has its strength in the north, where (of course) the energy reserves have been discovered.

Furthermore, there is growing concern in Mozambique that all business runs through the office of the president. Already there has been disquiet in the north. How well President Armando Guebuza and his successor manage the process will determine whether Mozambique prospers or finds itself in another form of civil war or strife. Wealth distribution and job fulfillment will be a major factor in the stability of the nation. Mozambique also has significant potential as an agriculture producer for the region and beyond, and its tourism opportunities, with a magnificent coast and beaches, and vast wildlife reserves have barely been touched.

Namibia:

By itself, Namibia is a large nation

with a very small population. Its population density is one of the lowest in the world.

However, it has what many countries lack: sufficient transportation infrastructure to move goods easily through the country and to neighboring countries, especially to South Africa and Angola. Its port in Walvis Bay has the potential to cut ocean shipping times between the Americas and Africa by at least a week. It could be one of the most important ports in Africa.

Hage Geingob is planning to run for president in the next election. He has proven to be far-sighted and is committed to economic development of the nation.

In addition to Walvis Bay, Namibia has some of the finest wildlife preserves in the world and its Skeleton Coast is largely undeveloped for tourism. It is a nation with largely untapped potential with an infrastructure capable of absorbing growth.

One of its primary problems, however, is, like nearly all nations in Africa, a lack of power. The nation is currently only meeting approximately 50 percent of its power needs. It has been dependent upon the South African grid for its power, and as the need for power has grown in South Africa, the flow to Namibia has been reduced. One of the highest priorities in Namibia is now to develop a more independent power source. It is a nation ready for the assistance of U.S. power companies, particularly those that deal with smaller scale power plants.

Zambia:

Although Zambia is landlocked, its

development has been noteworthy. Once almost solely dependent on mining for its economy, the nation is beginning to develop its agriculture and benefit from its tourism potential beyond only Victoria Falls, one of the most spectacular tourism destinations in Africa. Its national park system is underutilized but excellent, and its business climate is one of the best in the region. Zambia has also benefited as the host country for the largest economic regional community in Africa, the Common Market of East and Southern Africa.

One hopes that the development of Zambia will be a model for the regional community it hosts. Zambia can serve as a stable anchor to the region as well as a model for wellplanned development. The Zambian plan includes developing its capital as a business hub for corporate regional headquarters. There has also been discussion of making Lusaka a headquarters for insurance companies.

Its greatest needs are power and a continuing stable political leadership committed to the spread of wealth throughout the country.

will also draw other financial companies and banks back to Cote d'Ivoire, possibly making it a financial hub for the region (or at least the significant Francophone sub-region) and other parts of Africa.

Cote d'Ivoire is also the largest producer of cocoa. The world's continuing love for all things chocolate will make Cote d'Ivoire an important agricultural hub for many of the world's cocoa companies, such as Cadbury's, ADM, Cargill, Hershey's and many others. Because cocoa trees require shade, the cocoa industry will develop hand in hand with other tree crops such as palm oil and betel nuts. The World Cocoa Foundation has some of its most important research projects in Cote d'Ivoire.

How Cote d'Ivoire fares will have major impact on its neighbors, including Liberia, Sierra Leone and Ghana. Two of Cote d'Ivoire's biggest needs are power and great transparency in government and business dealings.

Rwanda:

I note this nation as one to watch in

2014 because of its potential influence on political and economic events in one of the more volatile regions in Africa. Rwanda has one of the most far-thinking national development planning systems in Africa, largely through the Rwanda Development Board. It has a national plan for development. It is attempting to become a regional service hub. It is also developing its agriculture base and its base as a center for tourism, particularly related to the mountain gorillas. With its hills and mountains, mile for mile Rwanda is one of the most beautiful countries in Africa and the world. Its people are generally among the more optimistic, especially given its tragic history.

The Achilles' heel for Rwanda continues to be its inability to come to grips with its history. Discussion of the past seems to be still very difficult. Political opponents of President Paul Kagame have met untimely ends. The president believes that Rwanda still requires a strongman as much as a strong leader. The question may be whether he can become less a strong man and more a peacemaker and conciliator. Rwanda's credibility as a service center will be linked to its ability to create a more peaceful regional climate.

Zambia has experienced some disquiet related to Chinese investment in the economy and the treatment of Zambian workers by Chinese employers.

This will likely continue to be an issue that requires careful political management and wisdom.

The Example Her Page

Dr. Miriam C. Gyimah

It is said that writers, particularly poets, produce their best and most profound works after going through a painful and devastating experience or tragedy. I make no such claim today with this article, but it is a painful experience which prompts me to write this piece. Out of pain we grow and out of difficult and heartbreaking episodes we become more experienced, more careful and more philosophical about ourselves, our lives, our co-existence with others and our place and purpose in God’s world. To begin, let me ask: have you ever felt your heart break? I mean really feel it breaking and crumbling inside your chest and the pain is so real, so hurtful you cry, not because you want to, but because the pain forces itself out of you? Or have you ever been injured so terribly that again you feel the implosions in your heart and instead of acknowledging you have been hurt, you turn to anger, your go to defense mechanism, and express your rage and fierce disapproval with fire and brimstone all in display of disastrous proportions? But you are more hurt than angry. I am sure you have found yourself in at least one of these situations. You have felt the injury and succumbed to the tears or even the outrage and surrendered to the anger. Let me tell you about the aftermath of one episode. Hours and even days after, I was still in pain. I could still feel a terrible aching in my heart as it continually tore in pieces and crumbled over and over again. Then I would become angry once again that this person had assaulted me so terribly and what was more painful was that it was completely unwarranted, for I had not inserted myself in her way whatsoever, but somehow, she found it fit to assault me verbally and emotionally in the midst of several others. I relived the offense as it continually asserted itself in my mind’s eye and resound in my ears. There was no doubt I was hurt, for I privately shed tears. I, one who has been described as iron, choked up even days

after the episode. And then the anger stirring in me begins to work its way into rage and all I see is that my imagination runs wild depicting me having both hands around the neck of the offender choking her, stomping on her repeatedly, attempting to snuff the living daylights out of her, all because of the pain she had inflicted upon me. Then suddenly, I literally shake my head, attempting to snap the dark images out of my mind and return to my rightful consciousness, for how could one, how could I, ever entertain such violent and vengeful thoughts? It is completely against decorum and all dignity, but somehow, it felt as if it would be the only appeasement to my injury and more importantly, my fury. I know it sounds a bit dramatic, but if we allow it, our imagination and Satan, the enemy of all righteousness, can lead us to a very dark and foreign path. My mother says “Christ makes the difference.” It is a truth I hold dear, for repeatedly, He has been my salvation in more than one way. As flesh and blood, when we are injured terribly, we often become angry and want to avenge ourselves. However, it isn’t so much that we become angry, but that we choose anger. The fact is that we choose anger and not pain, for anger can empower us; it can justify us, while we believe pain only weakens us and reveals our vulnerability, our victimization, and who wants to be perceived as a victim? Certainly not I. Yet, although anger gives us strength and motivation to defend ourselves and dominate the offender by our own means, and hurt them as much as they have hurt us, it simply isn’t the best choice and to choose and/or yield to anger will not prove our best moments. Would engaging in a shouting match, terribly insulting or stomping the life out of another ever produce our best moments? As a child of God, while you are going through these severe feelings of anger, you begin to hear or feel a prodding advising calmness, calmness. It advises to let it go; forgive the offense; remain silent, but sometimes while you know very well it will be better to let it go, your pride and hurt will not allow it. You feel you have to avenge yourself. You have to give in to your anger and allow yourself to vent or even explode, giving that offender pound for pound. But it is for our best moments which we must strive. And it is for our finer moments that we have the benefit of Christ as our example. With all the mal-intended aggravations and conspiracies that Christ faced, He taught us through His life’s work that we must never succumb to or choose anger, but rather pain. Choosing the pain is enduring the hurt without avenging our-

selves. For we have a greater purpose ahead of us. After all, that Man of Sorrow bore all our pains and suffering so that we “may have life and have it more abundantly” (John 10:10). The one time that we see Christ angry was in defense of the temple of the Lord. The Bible narrates that, “… the Jews' Passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting: And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables; And said unto them that sold doves, take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise” (John 2: 13-16). The example of Christ demonstrates that the defense of the word, the Lord, His house, is the sort of anger we should respond to in righteous indignation. It should never be in defense of ourselves, for the Bible has already instructed us to die to the self as Galatians 5:24 states, "and those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires" and the Bible further teaches that even if we should become angry, we should not permit our anger to cause us to sin (Eph. 4:26). Additionally, the Bible warns, “… never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord” (Rom 12:19). So if God has already promised to deal with those who offend us, why do we bother? Time and again, Christ showed that it was best to remain silent when offended, when wrongfully accused and even when stricken, than to retaliate. Retaliation is a result of choosing anger instead of forgiveness. It is a sinful act of satisfying the self instead of obeying the ways of the Lord. By defending ourselves through our anger verbally or physically, we set aside God’s instructions and take matters into our own hands. We depose Him as our Lord and position ourselves as our own maker and god. We also say with our actions that instead of choosing Christ, we choose us. Of course it is painful to be hurt, disrespected, abused or betrayed by another, especially a loved one or someone we trust so deeply or even another that we snobbishly perceive is not our equal in many ways. But that offense serves as a temptation or test to which we must not succumb, but overcome. Christ was a model of restraint. He lived that exemplary life to demonstrate to us that we too can have those same virtues. He repeatedly forgave His offenders while also setting free those who were being persecuted because of their transgression. When falsely accused, He held His tongue. Even when He

February 2014

Page

20

was painfully enduring the excruciating violence of crucifixion, He agonizingly cried out “Father, forgive them for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34). Acknowledging the agony inflicted on us, though it might expose our vulnerability, is far more honorable than responding in anger, which will not only cause us to disgrace ourselves, but also fall out of the will of God. So don’t permit the enemy to take your mind, heart and actions to a place of no return. Do not allow anger to get the best of you. Certainly, do not entertainment any means of vengeance, for these suggestions of anger are all a plot of the enemy to alter the course of your life for the worse. Let’s be reminded that the Bible warns us that we should “be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour” (1st Peter 5: 8). Although it feels so natural and justified, anger is a tool of the enemy and he is ready to use it at minimum to compromise and complicate our lives and at most, to destroy us. Should we permit it to destroy us? If we do, we are giving in to the enemy’s machinations of manipulation. Can we afford that? Our only acceptable recourse is to turn to Christ and His example. The only prescription is to allow His word to heal the hurt and take away the anger, even as we exercise grace to forgive the offender. Instead of responding to an offense with a fit of rage, we should be strong, wise and humble enough to say, “Father, forgive them for they do not know what they are doing”; then we can be sure that we are following the example of Christ and making our best moments.

God but Apostle Safo Kantanka was not bordered about this. He knew he was a great man and had a special mission to accomplish on earth but it was just a matter of time.

He also embarked on selling cooking oil and foodstuff, farming, fishing and many other trades and entrepreneurial ventures. He did all these alongside with preaching of the gospel.

Apostle Dr. Kwadwo Safo Kantanka is a preacher, inventor, philanthropist and the Star of Africa. He is the world’s greatest inventor of all times and has carried out the greatest philanthropic activity in Ghana. He funds all these exercises with revenue from his numerous investments.

He is also the founder of the Kristo Asafo church, Great KOSA conglomerate and many other institutions. His mission is to redeem - Africa from bondage. He has won several awards from reputable institutions including the government of Ghana and Liberia. Brief veracity:

First African to manufactured vehicles, aircrafts and heavy duty machines. First man in the world to manufactured Base guitars with seven strings, gadgets and machines with extra-ordinary features. Only man on earth capable of producing metals from sea shells and palm husk making metals renewable. Only individual on earth who practically cuts across the length and breadth of invention and innovative science. Most mysterious man on earth. It is practically impossible to comprehend his level of wisdom. Early Life Apostle Dr Kwadwo Safo Kantanka was born on 26th August 1948 at Bekwai in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. As a child, he had deep passion for science and technology. After closing from school, he would quickly do his home work and rush to the farm to get sticks for designing cars, helicopters, planes, etc. He designed machines and automobiles that had never been seen in the town.

The level of wisdom displayed by the young Kwadwo Safo Kantanka through his speech and handicrafts astonished lots of people. This earned him great respect from the community including the youth and the elderly.

Lots of people were shocked when they saw this man of God donating the little he had to the poor and needy in society. Additionally, he manually dug wells for villages and communities to aid them obtain good drinking water. All these were done wholeheartedly and free of charge. Apostle Kwadwo Safo Kantanka and his Kristo Asafo were synonymous to philanthropy. In 1980 Apostle Kwadwo Safo Kantanka began organising annual charity shows where lots of food stuff from his farms, clothing and other items were distributed to the poor and needed in society. For him, no empowerment is as effective as self-empowerment. He believes that the Blackman is capable of doing anything other races can do. Hard work and perseverance are his most cherished words.

He teaches that, the way to success is identifying talents, improving on them and applying same to the benefit of society. He believes that God created everyone in his own image; therefore, everyone is created for a purpose and has equal capabilities

The challenge then is for Africans to identify that purpose and apply their abilities to the freedom of the continent and to the glory of God.

This made some people to question his legitimacy of being a man of

BASIC PRINCIPLE OF BIBLE INTERPRETATION - 3

T.B. Joshua Turns Gay Man Straight February 2014

Page 28

The Principle of Simplicity

The principle of simplicity is to look for the simplest interpretation knowing that there are no hidden meanings to the scriptures, important truths are not hidden. Major doctrinal truths of our faith are plainly seen in scripture and often repeated throughout the Bible. God had not hidden His truth from all but the wisest and the most diligent seeker. God’s purpose is to reveal not to conceal. We know therefore that important truths are not hidden in obscure passages or in figures of speech. This principle helps us not to major on minors in our study. The implicit therefore is to be interpreted by the explicit. That which is assumed to be implied in scripture is to be interpreted in the light of passages that are fully developed and formulated. In other words interpret the obscure in the light of the clear. R. C. Sproul says “The basic rule is the rule of

care. Careful reading of what the text is actually saying will save us from much confusion and distortion. No great knowledge of logic is necessary just the simple application of common sense. Example: there is a school of thought that angels are sexless which is deduced from Mark 12:15 where Jesus explains that in heaven there will be no marrying or giving in marriage but we will be like the angels. That imply that angels do not marry but it does not imply they are sexless. It is possible the angels could remain unmarried for other reasons than they being sexless. So then we cannot build a teaching on a possible implication especially if there are no passages of scripture to confirm it. Such implication has no bearing on our salvation and we will understand them when we get to heaven. Here on earth we must work out our salvation with truths which are confirmed throughout the pages of the Bible Isaiah 29:29 If our interpretation of text does not construe its meaning in the simplest, least complicated most natural and straight forward manner then all things being equal our interpretation is probably not varied.

wide-ranging news conference aboard the papal plane.

“God loves sinners but hates sin. We should hate the act but not the people – because sinners can be delivered and changed. Sinners can be reformed since our battle is not against the flesh and blood but against the spirit beings that cause these acts”.

Mr Tedus later gave advice saying, “If you come across someone with the same problem, you should not condemn. The only answer is deliverance.”

T.B. Joshua said, “If we fail to see that there are powers that cause people to be bowed down in bondage, we are fighting the wrong battle. He said that after his deliverance at the church his desires have changed and he no longer has passion for men but rather for women. This all seems to be a more in-depth spiritual approach on the issue of homosexuality then the statements made by Pope Francis in July when he said that he will not “judge” gays and lesbians, including gay priests, signalling a shift from his predecessor and hinting at a possible change in the Church’s approach to historically marginalised groups. “If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?” Francis said in a

Kingslight Chapel Concludes Shebah Convention 2014 With Prophetic, Anointing and Deliverance Service

The Kingslight Chapel in Virginia concluded their four day annual Shebah convention on Monday February 10, 2014 with a glorious prophetic anointing and deliverance service. The convention which was under the theme “Thus Saith the Lord”, brought together worshippers from the entire Washington Metropolitan Area who packed the Shebah temple , leaving hardly any place to sit. The main speaker, Rev. Osbert Blankson Eduam, a renowned conference speaker, unleashed prophecies, made startling revelations, and uncovered mysteries in the lives of many people. A lot of people got their breakthrough during the four day power packed convention. The Springs of Melody, the resident Choir of the ministry, entreated the congregation to a lot of soul inspiring songs. Rev. Dr. and Rev. Mrs. Ahia Armah who hosted the event were so delighted and confessed the annual convention has uplifted the ministry to a different level. They however admitted that a lot of work was put in the preparation by the various church coordinators and commended them for their untiring efforts. They also expressed their appreciation to the entire community of worshippers who joined them to make the convention a success. On Monday the concluding day of the convention Prophet Osbert Blankson Eduam preached about The Power of the Anointing Oil . He spoke about the power of God dwelling in the oil of anointing and mentioned that when Samuel poured the oil on David the anointing of God came upon him to signify God’s power dwelling in the oil.

Rev. Dr. and Rev. Mrs. Ahia –Armah and Rev. Osbert Blankson Eduam

Rev. Blankson Eduam afterwards pronounced ten-fold anointing blessings on everyone’s life.

His amazing prophetic ministration dazzled everyone to the extent that people stayed glued to their seats after the event travelled past 12 midnight on Monday February 10.

He could call people he was meeting for the first time by their full names, mention their residential addresses, date of birth, date of marriage, schools they attended and even when they accepted the Lord. One lady who is visiting from Ghana confessed, “I believe I came to America because of this man, because I sit under the feet of a prophet in Ghana and have met many of them but no one has uncovered such mysteries in my life as this one.”

At the end of the convention the Prophet expressed his appreciation to the Hosts, Rev, Dr. and Rev. Mrs. Ahia –Armah for their wonderful reception and went on to mention that it has become a known fact that they take very good care of their visiting Ministers.

“Kenyan Pastor Charging Sh1,000 “To Check If You Name Is Written In The Book Of Life”..

Afrikan

Post

Pastor Thomas Wahome of Helicopter of Christ Church is charging his congregation Sh1,000 each to check whether anyone’s name is in the book of life. The pastor has for the past two weeks been charging the amount as Thousands of followers flock to him to know if they will enter heaven.

“I am shocked. My friends told me their names are in the Book of Life and I should also go to check if I will be allowed into Heaven,” says Sheila Mbaya, a married mother of one.

Last year, Pastor Wahome was charging Sh1, 200 to anyone who wanted to touch his clothes promising they will be healed from all their ailments. In the Bible, a woman touched the clothes of Jesus and was healed of her bleeding problem (Mark 5:21-34).

When The Nairobian called Wahome through his official number, the call was received by Pastor Salome. She indeed confirmed that it would cost Sh1, 100 to get to know if one’s name is in the Book of Life. “Send the money to this number, 07XX032000 (number concealed) and then come tomorrow at around 10 in the morning. The bishop will then tell you if your name is in the Book of Life,” she said.

In 2011, Wahome was involved in a divorce case with his estranged wife who demanded Sh300,000 for upkeep. During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Leah Mueni said Wahome earns millions from tithes, offerings and from selling anointing oil and water.

In her court papers, Leah said Wahome, whose crusades and Sunday services are aired on TV. 500 people per day and each of them parts with Sh10,000 to see him. Mueni accused Wahome of spending thousands of shillings on a lavish lifestyle while she and the children were left languishing in poverty.

She was seeking an order requiring Wahome to give her two vehicles saying the pastor owns a Toyota Prado, a Lexus, two Mercedes Benz and a Pajero. On his part, Wahome wanted the court to order that the children undergo a DNA test first, to establish their paternity.

Famed Child Actress And Former U.S Ambassador To Ghana, Shirley Temple Dies February 2014

Former Hollywood child star Shirley Temple has died at the age of 85.

The actress found fame as a young girl in the 1930s in films like Bright Eyes, Stand Up and Cheer and Curly Top.

After retiring from films in 1950 at the age of 21, Temple returned to the public eye as a Republican candidate for Congress and as a US diplomat. She died on Monday February 11, 201 at home in Woodside, California, from natural causes. "She was surrounded by her family and caregivers," a statement said.

Born in 1928, the sweet-faced, curly-haired Temple was one of the most popular child stars in Hollywood history, getting her first film role at the age of three.

Her singing, dancing and acting won over fans worldwide. She was given a special juvenile Oscar in 1935, when she was just six years old. To this day, she is still the youngest person to receive an Academy Award. With the nickname "America's little darling", she was ranked as Hollywood's biggest draw for four years running from 1935 to '38 in an annual poll of US cinema owners.

Her rendition of the song On the Good Ship Lollipop in the film Bright Eyes was among her most famous performances.

Her other hit films included The Littlest Rebel, Baby Take a Bow and Little Miss Marker.

US president Franklin Delano Roosevelt dubbed her "Little Miss Miracle" for raising morale during the Great Depression and she was also credited with helping save 20th Century Fox from bankruptcy.

Temple starred in a total of 43 feature films - but found it difficult to sustain her career in adulthood and left acting

behind in 1950.

She continued to appear on television, but that work dried up and she eventually stepped away from the spotlight.

When she came back into public view, it was in a new guise. Under her married name Shirley Temple Black, she ran for Congress in 1967 but lost.

Richard Nixon later appointed her as a member of the US delegation to the United Nations General Assembly before President Ford named her the US ambassador to Ghana in 1974. In 1989, she was made the US ambassador to Czechoslovakia shortly before the fall of the country's Communist regime.

She considered her background in entertainment an asset to her political career. "Politicians are actors too, don't you think?" she once said.

In a statement, her family said: "We salute her for a life of remarkable achievements as an actor, as a diplomat, and most importantly as our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and adored wife for 55 years of the late and much missed Charles Alden Black."

Stars paying tribute on Twitter included actress Whoopi Goldberg. "The Good Ship Lollypop has sailed today with Shirley Temple aboard," she wrote, calling her a true one of a kind.

Film critic Leonard Maltin wrote: "One of the most talented and brightest stars in the world has gone to the sky. A genuine phenomenon."

An Epidemic: Nigerian Men Killing Their Nurse Wives In The US

"Yes I have killed the woman that messed up my life; the woman that has destroyed me. I am at Shalom West. My name is David and I am all yours.” Those were David Ochola’s words during his 911 (U.S. Emergency Number) call to authorities after shooting dead his 28 years old wife, Priscilla Ochola, in Hennepin, Minnesota. The 50-years old husband was tired of being “disrespected” by his wife, a Registered Nurse (RN) whom he had brought from Nigeria and sponsored through nursing school only to have her make much more than him in salary - a situation which led to Mrs. Ochola “coming and going as she chose without regard for her husband.” The couple had two children – four years old boy and a three years old girl.

In Texas, Babajide Okeowo had been separated from his wife, Funke Okeowo, with whom he resided at their Dallas home. Upon the divorce, the husband lost the house to his wife, along with most of the contents therein, as is usually the tradition in U.S. divorces where the couple still has underage children. Mr. Okeowo, 48, divorced his wife because not long after she became a RN and made more money than him, she “took control” of the family finances and “controlled” her husband’s expenditure and movement. The husband could no longer make any meaningful contribution to his family back in Nigeria unless the wife “approved” it. He could not go out without her permission. Frustrated that his formerly malleable wife had suddenly become such a “terror” to him to the point of asking for in court and getting virtually everything for which he had worked since coming to the US thirty years prior, the husband got in his vehicle and drove a few hundred miles to Dallas to settle the scores. He found her in her SUV, adorned in full Nigerian attire on her way to the birthday bash organized in her honor. She had turned 46 on that day. Mr. Okeowo fired several rounds into his wife’s torso while she sat at the steering wheel, mercilessly killing her in broad daylight. Also in Dallas (they sure need anger management classes in Dallas), Moses Egharevba, 45, did not even bother to get a gun. The husband of Grace Egharevba, 35, bludgeoned her to death with a sledge hammer while their seven years old daughter watched and screamed for peace. Mrs. Egharevba’s “sin” was that she became a RN and started to make more money than her husband. This led to her “financial liberation” from a supposedly tight-fisted husband who had not only brought her from Nigeria, but had also funded her nursing school education. Like Moses Egharevba, Christopher Ndubuisi of Garland, Texas, (these Texas people!) also did not bother to get a gun. He crept into the bedroom where his wife, Christiana, was sleeping and, with several blows of the sledge hammer, crushed her head. Two years before Christiana was killed, her mother, who had been visiting from Nigeria, was found dead in the bathtub under circumstances believed to be suspicious. Of course, Christiana was a RN whose income dwarfed that of her husband as soon as she graduated from nursing school. The husband believed that his role as a husband and head of the household had been usurped by his wife. Mr. Ndubuisi’s several entreaties to his wife’s family to intercede and bring Christiana back under his control had all failed. If circumstances surrounding the death of Christiana’s mother were suspicious, those surrounding the death of a Tennessee woman’s mother were not. Agnes Nwodo, a RN, lived in squalor before her husband, Godfrey Nwodo, rescued her and brought her to the US. He enrolled her in nursing school right away. Upon qualifying as a RN, Mrs. Nwodo assumed “full control” of the household. She brought her mother to live with them against her husband’s wishes. Mrs. Nwodo quickly familiarized herself with US Family Laws and took full advantage of them. Each time the couple argued, the police forced the husband to leave the house whether he had a place

By Abiodun Ladepo

to sleep or not. On many occasions, Mr. Nwodo spent days in police cells. Upon divorcing his wife, Mr. Nwodo lost to his wife the house he had owned for almost 20 years before he married her. He also lost custody of their three children to her, with the court awarding him only periodic visitation rights. Even seeing the children during visitation was always a hassle as the wife would “arrive late to the neutral meeting place and leave early with impunity.” Mr. Nwodo endured so many embarrassing moments from his wife and her mother until he could take it no more. One day, he bought himself a shotgun and killed both his wife and her mother. Caleb Onwudike’s wife, Chinyere Onwudike, 36, became a RN and no longer saw the need to be controlled by her husband. Mr. Onwudike, 41, worked two jobs to send his wife to her dream school upon bringing her to the US from Nigeria. After four years, she qualified as RN. Once she started to make more money than her husband, she began to “call the shots” at home. She “overruled” her husband on the size and cost of the house they purchased in Burtonsville, Maryland. She began to build a house solely in her name in their native Umuahia town of Abia State, Nigeria, without her husband’s input whatsoever. Mrs. Onwudike came and went “as she liked,” within the US and outside the US. In fact, she once travelled to Nigeria for three weeks “without her husband’s permission” to lavishly bury her father despite her husband’s protestations that they had better things to do with the money. Mrs. Onwudike let her husband know that this was mostly her money and she would spend it however she wanted. Through her hard work, she had risen to a managerial position at the medical center where she worked. Upon her return from burying her father, her husband got one of her kitchen knives and carved her up like Thanksgiving turkey inside their home on New Year’s Day.

Death is death no matter how it comes. But the goriest of these maniacal killings is probably the one that happened here in Los Angeles, California. Joseph Mbu, 50, was tired of his RN wife’s “serial disrespect” of him. The disrespect began as soon as she became a RN. Gloria Mbu, 40, had once told her husband he must be “smoking crack cocaine” if he thought he could tell her what to do with her money now that she made more money than him. Before she became a RN, Mr. Mbu had been very strict with family finances and was borderline dictatorial in his dealings with Mrs. Mbu. However, Mrs. Mbu learned the American system and would no longer allow any man to “put her down.” When Joseph Mbu could not take it anymore, he subdued his wife one day, tied her to his vehicle and dragged her on paved roads all around Los Angeles until her head split in many pieces.

[Author’s note: Although these are true stories, all the names and some of the details of the incidents have been altered as a mark of respect to the families involved. All of the killer husbands noted in these stories were found guilty. Most of them received the death sentence. Only the California and Maryland culprits received life sentences without the possibility of parole.] It often comes to Nigerian men living in the US as a rude shock when their wives become the household’s bread winner. Having been accustomed to the docility, domestication, subjugation and outright terrorization of women back home in Nigeria, many Nigerian men are astounded when their wives assert their financial, behavioral and social independence. It is commonplace for Nigerian men to take important family decisions without consulting their wives; to travel out of town and indeed out of country without consulting their wives. Some do not even bother to inform their wives! It is not a big deal for Nigerian husbands to answer phone calls from their girlfriends while lying in bed with their wives; to buy expensive gifts for their girlfriends and making only perfunctory, casual attempt to conceal such gifts. It is nothing strange for Nigerian men to, in fact, bring those girlfriends to their matrimonial homes while

34

their wives are home! Some Nigerian men think they have the carte blanche to do what they want because they are the bread winners. What’s the wife going to do to them? Beat them? Leave them? Leave them after one, two or three children? Who’s going to marry her? So Nigerian men think.

This cruel and phenomenal hostage-taking by Nigerian men in Nigeria is what Nigerian women in America are trying to stop. And they figured out the easiest way to begin curtailing these bullish husbands’ wings is to improve their own potential to earn more. A good way to earn a decent pay in the US (unlike in Nigeria) is to become a Registered Nurse. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the median annual salaries of RNs, based on information from May 2012, is $68,000, while the mean annual salary is $69,000. The middle 50% of RNs earns between $54,000 and $78,000. Only 10% of RNs earns less than $44,000, while some 10% earns more than $97,000. The BLS also reports average hourly wages: The median hourly wage of a RN is $32.00 and the mean hourly wage is $33.00. The middle 50% of RNs earns wages of $27.00 to $40.00, with 10% of them earning less than $22.00 while 10% earns more than $48.00 an hour.

Nigerian men in the US are quick to send their “newly-imported” wives to these nursing schools in the hope that once the women graduate, they (the husbands) could take control of their finances and continue their enslavement. You can imagine a man who was probably a menial worker earning less than $30,000 annually in an expensive place like California or New York going back to Nigeria to “oppress” the village with dollars. He finds a “village girl,” brings her to the US and sends her to nursing school. When she graduates and makes twice his salary, he begins to feel inferior to her and his macho instincts take control of him, catapulting his emotions over his sense of reason. If the RN wife decides to take a second or third job, she can easily triple or quadruple the gap between her earnings and those of her menial job husband’s. Working long hours takes the wife away from home and because nurses are expected to work overnight shifts, you end up with a husband who is usually home alone at night with just the children. Since even “normal” marriages can be potentially stressful endeavors, adding spousal jealousy and a husband who sleeps alone half of the time to the equation will certainly test the limits of the marriage. It is the reason why even when such husbands do not go over the hill to kill their wives, they divorce them in epidemic numbers. A friend in New York told me that RN women there are being divorced in droves as if they are plagues. What is the big deal if a RN wife makes more money than her

husband? There are several other professions in which wives make more money than their husbands. In fact, I know of a few military couples with the wives senior in rank to their husbands even though they joined the military at the same time. Yet, nobody is killing or divorcing anybody. Is this strictly a RN thing? My hope is that some of these RN wives learn from the many other RN wives who successfully manage their homes in spite of making more money than their husbands. My hope is also that the husbands of these RNs learn from husbands of the many RNs who successfully cope with a wife who makes more than they do. I don’t know how they do it, but for every RN who is killed or divorced by her husband, there are hundreds, if not thousands more who proudly respect their husbands and submit to their husbands’ authority – yes, their husbands’ authority (NOT control and NOT abuse) even here in the US. CHAN 2014: Libya defeat Ghana on penalties to lift Trophy

Libya has emerged as the winner of the 2014 edition of the African Nations Championship (CHAN), after defeating Ghana 4-3 on penalties. The Local Black Stars, playing in the second final in three editions of the tournament, lost to DR Congo 2-0 in the final of the inaugural edition in 2009. Goalkeeper Adams saved two spot kicks from, Mohamed Elgadi and Abdelsalam Omar after the first five kicks tied at 3-3 and sudden death penalties ensued.

Ahmed El Trbi scored the sixth penalty for Libya before Joshua Tijani missed his for Ghana to spark celebrations from the Mediterranean Knights of Libya.

The final match of CHAN, South Africa 2014 was played before an appreciative crowd of just under 17 000 that included CAF President Issa Hayatou and his invited guest FIFA President Sepp Blatter. It was a lively and competitive match from first whistle with both sides eager to open the scoring but clear cut scoring opportunities were few and far between. Twenty-two minutes into the match Libya’s Faisal Ali too committed in a challenge on Mohamed Mahfud earned him a yellow card as the game opened up more and the crowd bayed for more of the entertaining stuff. Ghana’s midfield was string some shorts passes with Abraham Attobrah at the heart of their creative play as he linked up with Seidu Bansey , Joshua Tijani, captain Jordan Opoku and Sulley Mohammed to give the Black Stars territorial advantage. The Libyans defence anchored by captain Ali Salama held firm and whatever went past goal-minder Mohamed Abdaula dealt with. Ghana finished the first half in ascendancy but the scoreboard remained blank. Twenty-seven (27) minutes into play some neat exchanges allowed Theophilus Anobaah to turn inside that box but Ahmed Trbi recovered in time to stop a shot on goal as Ghana came close again. At the other end Elmutasem Abushnaf failed to keep his short low and on target after working his way to the edge of Ghanaian penalty box. In the second half Libya pushed more bodies upfront but it was Ghanaian substitute Yahaya Mohamed who came closest to breaking the deadlock with an attempted back kick. He didn’t quite connect and Ahmed Almaghasi cleared the danger. The goal remained elusive and into extra time it went. Abushnaf’s header from Elmehdi Elhouni sailed centimeters over the cross bar. Sulley Mohamed saw his effort trickle past the post as Ghana came agonizingly close. Adams saved a goal bound effort from Libyan substitute Muataz Fadel and then it was time for penalty shoot-out.
