I need to finish up work on my 14th studio album as my fans have been waiting for something new from me, I apologize for the wait, but it will be worth it when it’s all over because this coming album will have something for everyone, I promise.” — Kojo Antwi.

Legendary Ghanaian musician ‘The Maestro‘, Kojo Antwi, AKA ‘Mr. Music Man‘, through late July and early September of 2018 embarked on a historic tour of the United States (US) that saw him tour six States in a tour that has been described as “very successful” by Mr. Antwi.

Dubbed ‘The Maestro USA Tour 2018‘, the roadshow made its first stop in Chicago on July 25 where from where it headed into the American Capitol of Washington DC on August 11, 2018. In an interview with TheAfricanDream.net, Kojo Antwi said it was good to be back and touring the US after almost 6yrs.

Three startups from Kenya and one from South Africa have been named winners of the MIT Inclusive Innovation Challenge in Africa, earning the chance to compete for US$250,000 in prize money at the global final.

The challenge is run by the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy, with the four African winners selected from nine regional finalists and the 10 Zambezi Prize for Innovation in Financial Inclusion finalists.

Three of the winning startups were from Kenya: informal worker employment platform Lynk, which won the Skills Development and Opportunity Matching Category; SMS-based agricultural knowledgesharing service WeFarm, which won the Income Growth and Job Creation Category; and off-grid toolkit for localised food production Solar Freeze, which won the Technology Access Category.

South African startup Wala, a blockchain-powered financial services platform, was winner in the Financial Inclusion Category. Earlier this month the startup was named winner of the Zambezi Prize for Innovation in Financial Inclusion.

All four winners will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to MIT for the grand prize gala, and access to a Zambezi Prize-sponsored bootcamp at MIT on November 5-9. Senegal is set to make history as the first African country to host the modern Olympic Games which were first held in Athens, Greece, in 1896.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) on said its executive board picked Senegal in a four-nation hosting contest for the 2022 Youth Olympic Games, news site Aljazeera reports.

Senegal got the pick over Tunisia, Botswana, and Nigeria, the other bidders for the fourth edition of the Summer Youth Games.

The West African country is expected to host the event in its capital Dakar, the new city of Diamniadio and the coastal resort of Saly.

Senegal was selected following a unanimous vote by the IOC earlier this year during the Winter Olympics in South Korea’s Pyeongchang to award the Youth Games to the African continent.

According to the IOC, the selection process was shorter than earlier processes, and “reduced cost and complexity for the Interested or Candidate Parties.”

The president of the IOC, Thomas Bach said “It is time for Africa…Africa is the home of many successful and prominent Olympic athletes. Africa is a continent of youth. That is why we want to take the Youth Olympic Games 2022 to Africa and to Senegal.

“They have offered a project based on a strong vision for youth and sport. There are many opportunities, and we will endeavour to deliver together, as part of a strong partnership, visionary, responsible and inspiring Youth Games.”

Senegal was recently ranked 52nd most-peaceful country in the Institute for Economics & Peace, which makes it five spots better than the United Kingdom, which hosted the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.

Its rank is also higher than Brazil (106th) which hosted the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.

The IOL said the West African country’s project is in line with its economic and infrastructure development strategy, adding that after Senegal officials sign a host contract in Buenos Aires, they will begin a “co-construction phase with the IOC.” Source:howafrica.com

Queensway Restaurant Expands As Nigerian-Founder Prepares To Excite In The US

…but is there yet more cooking, or pounding? Well, that is not the only new thing coming, because Queensway is launching a new line of events that allow them to combine food and culture in a celebration of culinary delight. The first of such events will take place on September 23, 2018, at their Riverdale location on 5851 Riverdale Road in Riverdale Park, MD 20737.

Emmanuel Ogunsalu, a management member at Queensway told TheAfricanDream.net that this new adventure is called ‘The Fufu Dash‘, yes it’s not going to be jollof rice this time. Emmanuel continued to say, “‘The Fufu Dash’ will be an event where all attendees will get to eat unlimited amounts and kinds of fufu with different soups while getting a dash of African culture and dishes. Get tickets and updates at https://thefufudash.eventbrite.com.”

Winning the first ever Jollof festival in the United States (US) capital of Washington District of Columbia (DC) was a great experience for Queensway Restaurant. Their 2017 win at the African culinary festival celebrating Africa’s most debated dish of Jollof rice brought Queensway a lot of media blitz.

This year the restaurant has a lot of delicious surprises for African food lovers cooking, so sit tight, lose your belts, and prepare your taste buds as we discover what’s new.

All that limelight and positive press in the DC area’s African Diaspora community and indeed in the world of jollof rice lovers beyond the US from the Jollof Festival win had to be beneficially harnessed. So, the restaurant’s management felt motivated to expand, resulting in its second restaurant at a new location in Bowie, Maryland (MD).

Queensway Restaurant satisfy the need for expansion The spanking new property is located at 13635 Annapolis Road in Bowie, MD, 20720. But that’s not the only new thing they have cooking in their culinary pots, TheAfricanDream.net in a recent visit also found out they have been working with many local groups and organizations to put together a fitting 20 year anniversary to celebrate two decades of serving the DC metro area.

According to Mrs. Atinuke Ogunsalu, founder of Queensway restaurant in an interview with TheAfricanDream.net, “we are looking to continue to impact our community one plate at a time. Our 2018 return to Jollof Festival was a blessing that offered us a great opportunity to engage with customers again, compete and network with other local vendors,” she said.

Although Queensway did not win this year, they felt being selected to participate again as defending champions was a win in itself, “we received a lot of love, support and sales at the event this year. Lots of existing and potential customers went above and beyond to try our food and meet the team, which was such an honor,” said the restaurant’s founder.

almost 300 points today. We just signed a trade agreement with Mexico, and it’s a terrific agreement for everybody. It’s been in the works for a long time. It’s an agreement that a lot of people said couldn’t be done, and we did something, and it was very special. Great for our farmers, our workers.

And our stock market just broke 26,000 for the first time ever in the history. So today we have the highest stock price we’ve ever had. And we’re very happy about that. I said that was going to happen and it’s happened. Everything I said is going to happen, it ends up happening. So you picked a good day to come. (Laughter.) We’re in a very good mood.

PRESIDENT KENYATTA: Well, let’s hope you’re going to transfer some of that into Kenya. (Laughter.)

PRESIDENT TRUMP: We’ll bring that over to Kenya. (Laughter.) Thank you very much, everybody. I appreciate it. Thank you. Thank you. Joint Statement from President Donald J. Trump and President Uhuru Kenyatta

THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary

For Immediate Release

August 27, 2018

REMARKS BY PRESIDENT TRUMP AND PRESIDENT KENYATTA OF THE REPUBLIC OF KENYA IN EXPANDED BILATERAL MEETING

PRESIDENT TRUMP: Well, thank you very much. We are with President Kenyatta of a wonderful country that we do a lot of business with, Kenya. One of the most beautiful countries, from what I understand, Mr. President.

We have lots of pictures and lots of people that tell me how beautiful your country is. And we do a lot of tourism. We do a lot of trade. And we do a lot of defense and security. And we’re working very much on security right now. And I appreciate you very much being with us and your staff. This is really great. Your representatives have been dealing with our representatives and making a lot of progress. We’re talking about a very major highway/roadway. And that seems to be going along well. That’s a very important project, I think, for your country.

And so we appreciate, very much, you being at the White House and being with us. And we look forward to the discussion. Thank you very much.

PRESIDENT KENYATTA: Thank you very much. And thank you for your warm welcome. As you said, we’ve had strong relations that stretch back — all the way back to our own independence. And we are here to cement that partnership. We are here to strengthen the support we have received as a country, especially with regards to our security and defense cooperation has been immense.

I had a good opportunity to speak with Mike, both in his former capacity and his current capacity. (Laughter.) And we work very well together, and I want to take this opportunity to appreciate that.

But more importantly, even as we work on these aspects, what’s most important and what makes our country survive is the trade and investment partnership. I mean, this is really what we should work to deepen much more as we go forward.

So I’m really looking forward to this discussion, and I’m looking forward to seeing how we take our relationship now to the next level —

PRESIDENT TRUMP: Good.

PRESIDENT KENYATTA: — for the mutual benefit of our two peoples.

PRESIDENT TRUMP: Well, you are here on a very special day because the stock market is up

President Donald J. Trump welcomed President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya to the White House today. In marking 55 years of diplomatic relations between the United States and Kenya, and in recognition of the growing scope and depth of the engagements between the two countries, the leaders resolved to elevate the relationship to a Strategic Partnership, affirming it as a cornerstone of peace, stability and good governance in Africa and the Indian Ocean region. This United States– Kenya Strategic Partnership will include an annual dialogue to advance mutual prosperity.

President Trump commended the Kenya Defence Forces for their service and sacrifice in combatting al-Shabaab and ISIS in Somalia. President Trump also lauded Kenya for taking a leading role in the East African fight against terrorism and for its sustained dedication to this effort. The leaders reaffirmed and strengthened their commitment to continued counterterrorism cooperation against violent extremists who seek to take innocent lives and deny fundamental human rights. To further enhance this counterterrorism collaboration, President Trump welcomed Kenya’s decision to join the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS. President Trump also thanked President Kenyatta for his diplomatic efforts to bring peace to South Sudan and to the region more widely.

The leaders pledged to deepen defense and security cooperation, building on the recent acquisition of military equipment made in the United States and committed to further enhance Kenya Defence Forces capabilities. Further, the United States pledged to strengthen Kenya’s national disaster and crisis response capacity.

President Kenyatta thanked President Trump for the United States’ continued support of the Kenyatta administration’s efforts towards greater accountability, transparency, and institution building. As democracies committed to a rules-based international order, the United States and Kenya share a common vision for free and open societies. This includes global freedom of navigation, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region.

The leaders committed to expand their economic cooperation aimed at making their nations stronger and their citizens more prosperous. In this regard, President Trump thanked President Kenyatta for hosting the United States delegation of the Advisory Council on Doing Business in Africa. To further enhance the economic partnership, the two leaders agreed to establish a United States–Kenya Trade and Investment Working Group to explore ways to deepen ties between the two countries. Further, the Presidents are pleased to announce that their governments established direct flights between Nairobi and New York City, a move that will expand the economic and cultural ties between the two great countries.

Recognizing the importance of high-quality infrastructure, President Trump and President Kenyatta welcomed the proposal by United States engineering and construction firm Bechtel Corporation to build a modern superhighway from Nairobi to Mombasa. Both sides agreed to undertake further consultations to conclude the terms of the financing agreement.

This and nearly $900 million in other commercial deals and engagements announced during the visit are expected to create thousands of American and Kenyan jobs, further enhancing the prosperity and economic competitiveness of both nations.

Are You Thirsty? Are You Hungry? Be Filled.

September 2018

T

Dr. Miriam C. Gyimah

here are thirsts that cannot be quenched and there are hungers than can never be satisfied by our own hands. There can be emptiness in a person that will never be filled by any physical or monetary acquisition, food, companionship, success, lifestyle, wealth or even family. The hole will remain and as much as you try to fill it, to make it go away, it will not, because you have yet to learn and accept that only one entity, your creator, the great I Am, can fill that gaping hole and complete your life. But He is still waiting for you to acknowledge Him and accept that you cannot fulfill your life because you did not give yourself life. He awaits your acceptance of Him as the One, the only Way to the Father and the only God who cannot only mend your broken heart but can give you new life, an everlasting life of the kingdom of God, which is righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit (Rom. 14:17). If you have Christ as your Savior, if you worship Him and live for Him, if you do your best with the help of the Holy Spirit to abide by His will daily, then, according to His word, you are on the right path, the path of life, the path where the kingdom of God is evidenced in your life; you are in accord with the True Vine, the Bread of Life, the Living Water, the Bright and Morning Star and even as you give Him all your heart and being, He continues to give you access to His Name, His blood, His glory and His manifold blessings. However, if you are not certain of your standing, your positioning, as a human in connection to the Lamb of God, Jesus Himself, whether you are within or without the church, then consider your existence and take stock, introspect and see where you are, what your mind is occupied on and where your heart lies. What moves you? What compels you to live? What drive, purpose, and agenda do you have as you daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly move through your life and the space allotted to you in this world? If you cannot ascertain that your life and purpose , your reason for being, is intrinsically connected, intertwined, with the will and direction of God for your breath and existence, then you must take stock of your life and your current situation because, whether you are aware of it or not, something is lacking; there is a loss, a displacement that you have yet to place your finger on, that you have not quite articulated because you are in a fog, blinded, overwhelmed and overcome by distractions of life which are to preoccupy you intentionally so that you may never become “unblind” and experience that epiphany, that you are missing a precious and invaluable quality in your life. Pause and search your heart and soul for that emptiness, for that space in your heart and soul that is hallow and possibly dark. Pause and quietly search for it, identify it and desire to fill it. Only one personality, only one entity, can fill it and fill it beyond measure

that it will overflow. That person is the Lord Jesus, the anointed Son of God, the Living Water, the Bread of Life. In John chapter four (4), when Jesus Christ went to the well of Jacob and began to engage the Samaritan woman, He went intentionally not because He was thirsty, but because she was. This move was at a point of His ministry when He began to meet His full purpose, to reach out to the entire world, and not just to the Jews. Thus, Jesus decides to dialogue with a Samaritan woman, although Jews and Samaritans were socially forbidden to interact with each other. When Jesus said to her, “give me a drink” (4:7), it was His invitation and lead into her life to quench her thirst, for the Samaritan woman had been hungry and thirsty for years, looking for fulfillment in relationships, and numerous men, yet she was still empty and unfulfilled. She responds to Him with, “‘How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me for a drink since I am a Samaritan woman?’ (For Jews had no dealings with Samaritans.) Jesus answered and said to her, ‘If you knew the Gift of God and who it is who says to you, give me a drink, you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water’” (John 4:9-10). He tells her in reference to the well water that, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water, springing up to eternal life” (John 4: 13&14). In the course of their dialogue, Jesus discloses private information about her in His attempt to reveal to her that He is the omniscient Messiah. He tells her that she has had five husbands and that even the man with whom she is currently living is not her husband. She says to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming when that One comes, He will declare all things unto us” Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am He.” (John 4:25 & 26). Having heard enough from Him, the Bible tells us that “the woman left her waterpot, and went into the city and said to the men, “come, see a man who told me all things I ever did. Could this be the Christ?” (John 4:28-29). It is interesting to note that the woman, who went to the well to retrieve water, leaves her waterpot behind and runs into the city to spread the good news of seeing the Messiah. The well and waterpot here only serve as symbolic pieces within this narrative. What we learn here is that Jesus, the Living Water, knows who thirsts and readily makes Himself available to quench that thirst and fill that gaping hole. Evidently, that the woman had been married to five husbands and is now living with a sixth man suggests she is searching for something and has not been able to find it. She has a thirst that no man or marital relationship has quenched, but when she encounters Jesus, the Living Water, she abandons that symbolic waterpot and well, because her parched soul had been filled and satisfied. What are you using in your attempt to fill that void in your life? Is it relationship after relationship? Is it material purchases after material purchases? Is it food? One can hunger and eat physical food to try and fill the void, but physical food cannot do it. It is not the prescription that will bring the healing. And unfortunately, one could eat

Page

and eat and eat and become obese, entering another miserable state, yet that hunger will not be satisfied. Or are you trying to fill that void by endlessly working towards success and achievements, believing that when you attain a certain level, you will be filled and satisfied? The attainment of success is good, but be careful that you are not using your commitment to hard work and pursuit of success to mask and hide the lack in your life. If you don’t already have Christ, He is that need and no amount of career achievement or climbing of the ladder of success can substitute for the Living Water and the Bread of Life. The Bible tells us, “seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matt 6:33). The things it refers to are the basic food and clothing, as cited in the previous verses (Matt 6: 31 & 32), but the Bible also assures believers that if we honor the Lord as we should, He will open the gates of heaven and pour out blessings into our lives that we will not even be able to contain (Malachi 3:10). In the book of John, Jesus says, “I am the Bread of Life; he who comes to me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst” (John 6:35). When Christ refers to Himself as the Bread of Life, He reminds us that just as we will hunger and starve should we not have physical bread, which provides the needed sustenance and nutrients for our physical bodies, so also will we hunger and die spiritually should we not have Him, our spiritual source of food. Without Him, we will be in a perpetual state of hunger and starvation because we are devoid of our critical spiritual sustenance, for He and His Word are one, even as John tells us that “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). To live as a human being without spiritual food is to hunger; further, to live without Christ is to be dead spiritually. So how do we take access to the Bread of Life? How do we avail ourselves to the Living Water that will never have us thirst again? If we want to live a full and satisfying life, if we desire to be fully aware of ourselves and spiritual state and not exist in a fog or in darkness, then we must look to Christ and see what He has to offer to us, even as the woman at the well came to perceive and understand. We must conclude that because He created us, He knows us just as He knew the intimate details of the woman’s life and came after her, because He knew His daughter was hungry and searching in the wrong places for what was missing in her life. Her spiritual being was not being fed and only He could provide the bread to satisfy the hunger and living water to quench her thirst. Are you aware of your hunger and thirst? Do you know its source? Are you searching for something you cannot place your finger on or are you doing all you can possibly do in your life and career yet still feel a dissatisfaction, and emptiness, a void that somehow is not being filled? Then look to Christ, the Bread of Life, the Living Water. Look to Him who created you to fill you up. Look to Him who designed you for Himself and His glory. Allow Him entrance to your life, so you can rest your waterpot. Allow Him the benefit of making you whole. Be filled.

Drama at Ex-Zimbabwean First Lady, Grace Mugabe’ Mother’s Funeral as Big Cobra Suddenly Shows Up

A mild drama played out recently at ex-Zimbabwean First Lady, Grace Mugabe’s mother’s funeral, Madam Marufu Mbuya as a big cobra was reported to have surfaced while proceeding was going on.

According to a witness who shared the video online, a cobra snake disrupted the service just as President Mugabe was giving his speech. The speech was briefly interrupted as some men were seen chasing the cobra snake which caused a panic among the guests.

Fake Nails, Eye Lashes Banned In Tanzanian Parliament September 2018

The Speaker of the National Assembly of Tanzania, Job Ndugai, has banned lawmakers in his country from entering the parliament with fake nails and eye lashes.

The ban would also apply to visitors to parliament, he said. The speaker imposed the ban on Monday during a House session in Dodoma, Tanzania.

Lawmakers are also prohibited from wearing short dresses and jeans to parliament, Mr Nduga said.

Mr. Ndugai also added that he is making consultations with experts before deciding on whether or not to stop MPs who use excessive make-ups from entering the House.

The announcement came shortly after the Deputy Minister for Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children, Faustine Ndugulile, told the House that women with false eyelashes and false finger nails face serious health risks that are costly to the country. The minister told the House that least 700 women are admitted to hospital with complications linked to the use of false eyelashes, false finger nails and skin bleaching.

Back in Kenya, female leaders were also embroiled in a similar debate on August 24, although on this occasion, the motion revolved around Murang’a Woman Representative, Sabina Chege’s alleged inappropriate dressing. A section of leaders including majority leader, Aden Duale, urged the speaker to ban any form of unofficial dressing in parliament for the sake of uniformity.

False eyelashes can permanently damage the hair follicles, cause allergic reactions which if not treated can damage ones eyes and can sometimes cause loss of sight.

While it is true that longer nails are attractive and fashionable, reports show that fake nails weaken the real nails and can worsen a fungal infection.

Ceana Celebrates Silver Jubilee In Toronto, Canada The Council of Ewe Associations of North America (CEANA) celebrated their Silver Jubilee Convention from August 31st to September 2nd, 2018, at the Airport Marriott Hotel in Toronto, Canada, under the theme "25 years of improving lives in Eweland; looking forward to do more." The event was attended by an estimated one thousand guests from the USA, Canada, Europe, Ghana, Togo and Benin.

The convention, hosted by Ewe-Canadian Cultural Organization of Ontario (ECCOO), one of the 17 constituent associations of CEANA, opened on Friday, August 31st, with a board meeting of the Council of Representatives (COR), chaired by the President of CEANA, Dr. Peter N. Abotchie.

The meeting included a review of operations for the past year, induction of new associations, approval of project reports and financial report and budget. The evening was capped with a cocktail reception for the Star Club (annual sponsors of CEANA), followed by cultural entertainment led by ECCOO’s cultural group.

In a resplendent atmosphere filled with jubilation, the delegates and guests from the various associations were ushered into the general conference venue on the morning of Saturday, September 1st. In attendance were Ghana’s High Commissioner to Canada, Mr. Ayikoi Otoo and Honorable Consul General to Ontario, Mr. Thomas Seshie. Both dignitaries congratulated CEANA and spoke to the gathering about the Ghana Government’s development programs.

The morning’s special guest, Reverend Dr. Seth Agidi, Moderator of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church and President of the Christian Council of Ghana congratulated CEANA on their 25th Anniversary and encouraged the organization to reach out to development partners back home in order to broaden their reach and impact.

The evening showcased the unique culture of Eweland with a procession of chiefs, comprising of traditional leaders from the USA, Canada, and Ghana, including Togbe F. Agbelom, also known as Nana Ofei Asamani I of Akwamu Traditional Area, who was accorded special recognition for his assistance to CEANA over the past several years.

In his address of the evening, the President of CEANA, Dr. Peter Nat Abotchie, recalled the legislative and project accomplishments of CEANA over the past 25 years which includes a high school scholarship program, and community development projects such as the construction of school facilities and health facilities in Ghana, Togo and Benin.

He paid homage to the pioneers whose vision and determination led to the formation and growth of CEANA, and also called on all Ewes to regard the task of community development in Eweland as everyone's collective responsibility. He reminded the gathering that the future of CEANA lay in striking partnership and collaboration with other organizations with a view to making a greater impact in our local communities.

The keynote address was given by Dr. Atsu Amegashie on the topic “CEANA at 25: The way forward”. He acknowledged the role CEANA has played in the lives of the people of Eweland and challenged the organization to tell its success story in a more compelling manner. He also encouraged CEANA to start an academic mentorship program by linking its senior high school scholarship recipients with diasporan and local academics.

To conclude he challenged CEANA to find ways of encouraging entrepreneurs to invest in Eweland, taking cognizance of the fact that business investment is the primary engine of growth of regions and nations, not charity.

The highlight of the evening, the annual fundraiser and solicitation for membership of the CEANA Star Club, drew contributions and pledges from guests in attendance. The backdrop for the fundraiser was provided by video footage of the completed projects undertaken by CEANA for the past several years.

The evening was rounded off with the official transfer of the mandate to host the next CEANA Convention to Ewe Association of Charlotte, North Carolina (EWEAC), led by Mr. Kwami Cyrille Ahovi-Zevo who was sworn in as the next 2nd Vice President of CEANA.

A well-attended non-denominational church service was held the next morning, officiated by a team of clergy led by Rev Dr. Seth Agidi. Thereafter, convention guests converged on Mississauga Valley Blvd Community Park for the annual CEANA Picnic which featured dishes from Eweland amid agbadza and borborbor tunes. Sunday evening was crowned with misegli loo, a rendition of a cultural pastime of evening story-telling. On Monday, September 3, 2018, convention delegates and guests departed to their various home destinations across North America, Ghana, Togo, Benin and Europe with a renewed sense of unity, friendship and purpose. The MCs for convention programs were Mr. Mawuli Agbenu and Mr. Anthony Dogbe. Sponsorship and media coverage were provided by Sankofa Media of Chicago, Ghanaweb and Finesse LX Media House of Ghana. The following resolutions were adopted:

1. Approval of scholarship awards for qualified high school students upon receipt of vetted applications in Ghana, Togo and Benin.

2. Commission of 6 new development projects in Ghana and Togo.

3. Induction of Ewe Association of Cincinnati-Dayton into CEANA.

4. Approval of Ewe Association of Charlotte, North Carolina, as the host the 2019 CEANA Convention.

On behalf of CEANA Secretariat and the CEANA Council, the President of CEANA, Dr. Peter Nat Abotchie, congratulates the delegates, guests, and ECCOO for making CEANA 2018 a success. Special appreciation goes to the outgoing 2nd Vice-President of CEANA Mr. Prince Gbeklui and the Convention Planning committee.

Meet Destiny Adjaho, The 15Year-Old Animator From Ghana Afrikan

eSwatini: This is the Only African Country That Has Rejected Chinese Fund September 2018

Page 24

Destiny Adjaho who just turned 15 this year January 27 is one of the brilliant aspiring engineers from Ghana, a science student and in his final year at the Keta Senior High School. He is passionate about innovation and invention. Despite challenges in bringing his animation talent to reality he still enjoys learning and making shots. You can catch a glimpse of some of his animation shots here.

“I always want to invent something and to tell stories with animation but due to material constraints and lack of the right tools I just keep doing the minor jobs on my animation shots and mostly my shots never get completed. But because I am determined to make my dreams come true, I have decided to create this animation shot for everyone to see.

Thanks to Noah Alorwu for inspiring me and being my guide. He has shown me a lot of inspirations from which I see teens invent and make things happen and that makes me always feel that I can also be one of them with my animation talent.” What motivates you to do animation? “I never had the dream to animate before then but my dream and love for animation developed through watching samples on television. One day I researched and found out that all these things I watched were made by the computer. From my perception animation has become a way of telling your stories in a realistic manner because we believe when we watch than when we read novels. From this, I felt that I also need to get my stories told by using the opportunity that has come. A mobile device helped me learn about animation with YouTube as my main source of tutorials. I started practicing with an open source tool called blender and within three weeks I got used to the basics of doing animation with blender and after it I created my first shark and train animation from tutorials. The results of these animations triggered me and made me discover the love I have for animation and its related mysteries.”

If you are provided the tools how far can you go with your animations? “Let me say it will be bliss in my life because all the projects that I have put down are all attractive and the world will love it and appreciate the fact that Africans can do something. In fact, I am hoping for a 30 minutes’ animation video that will tell a story I have in my mind. But it has to do with advance animation skills and I need the tools to advance my skills in the game and so if I am provided with the right tools then I will become an icon on the desktop of the world of fame.”

So what is your aim now? “My main aim is to master animation at a younger age and become one of the youngest animators in the world because I feel that it is where I belong. I also want to use my skills in animation to help the engineering sector in developing powerful machines because I am also an engineer.”

How do you feel about your talent? “it is a great opportunity for me because animation is not an easy task and require brilliant people so if I am blessed to have such a talent, then glory be to God.”

Destiny is not just an animator but also an aspiring engineer. Let us see what will become of this young innovator when he gets the tool.

China is Africa’s biggest trading partner and currently, over 40 African heads of state and representatives are in Beijing for the Forum for Africa-China Cooperation, FOCAC, which will tighten China’s grip over Africa and deepen Africa’s dependency.

However, only one country in the continent wants none of the Chinese support and has refused to adhere to the terms of China to benefit from the development drive. This country is eSwatini, the only absolute monarchy in the world that was formerly known as Swaziland.

Until recently, eSwatini, Sao Tome and Principe and Burkina Faso were the only African countries that recognized China’s bitter allies Taiwan and were punished with aid restrictions. China succeeded in ensuring the closure of all Taiwanese embassies in all African countries they had succeeded in wooing.

Sao Tome and Principe and Burkina Faso fell for the millions of dollars China was offering while eSwatini preferred to hold on to Taiwan which is considered as a breakaway region by China. The Taiwanese government provides eSwatini with aid and economic assistance. Meanwhile, China has assisted the rest of the continent with $60 billion in 2015 and presently, another $60 billion for Africa and a clean up of the debt maturing by this year of its LDCs, highly indebted, landlocked and Small Islands States.

These form part of the eight new initiatives announced at the Forum for Africa-China Cooperation, FOCAC, in Beijing on September 3-4. China also launched an initiative to promote non-resources-based China imports from Africa and a $5 billion special fund to accelerate such efforts. China and Taiwan separated in 1949 after the Communist victory in a civil war that saw the Nationalists flee to the island. The two sides have never united ever since despite back and forth diplomatic battles.

China has ensured that any country that establishes ties with Taiwan will be sanctioned diplomatically.

5 African Presidents Who Reduced Their Monthly Salary to Help Their Country Financially

4A f r i k a n

September 2018

Post

Page 25

In Africa generally, the determination of the salary of heads of state does not take into account either the financial situation of the country or the living conditions of the population. If some presidents, once in power unilaterally decide to increase their salary, there are some who, upon taking office, announce and reduce their salary. Five are their presidents who have decided to reduce their monthly salary in order to help their country financially.

3- Nigeria: Muhammadu Buhari

1- Liberia: George Weah A week after his inauguration, the former international footballer Liberian in his first “State of the Nation Address” said: “I announce to you today, with immediate effect, that I will reduce my salary and my bonuses. 25%, “ urging parliamentarians to follow this example to help the country cope with the economic difficulties it faces. So he adds, “Our economy is broken; our government is broke. Our currency is in free fall; inflation increases “ and then adds: ” Unemployment is at an unprecedented level and our foreign exchange reserves are at their lowest. “ Today the latter receives a salary of 75,000 euros instead of 100,000.

4- Egypt : Abdel Fattah al-Sisi

2 – Tanzania : John Magufuli

Since coming to power, John Magufuli has continued to make reforms in the public sector for the sole purpose of enabling the good life of its people. Having not only reduced the salary of all civil servants, he has been able to set an example by reducing by four times less than his predecessor, his salary as President of the Republic. “My salary is nine million Tanzanian shillings (about $ 4,000). I have not increased my salary and I will not increase it because my obligation is to serve Tanzanians first. Citizens are tired of stealing money, “ he said. In order to cope with state spending last year, Tanzania implemented a reform that reduced the salaries of civil servants. To set an example, Head of State John Magufuli had announced that he had reduced his monthly salary to $ 4,000 a month, four times less than his predecessor, to try to cope with the crisis.

Here again, the decision of the Egyptian master comes in 2014 after the economy of his country is facing many difficulties. Abdel to give a hand to the economy of his country did not hesitate to sacrifice half of his salary and his goods. “There must be real sacrifices on the part of every Egyptian man and woman. I take the maximum salary of 42,000 Egyptian pounds ($ 5,200 per month) and no one will take the maximum “ a- he suggested, adding, ” I’m going to do two things: I will not take half of this sum and my property, even what I inherited from my father, I will give up half for the sake of our country.

5- Uhuru Kenyatta- Kenya Putting the needs of the population first, Kenyan had reduced by 10% the salary of his vice president then 20% his own salary. “We have to face this monster if we want to develop this nation. Otherwise, sooner or later, we will become a country that will only collect taxes to pay for itself, “ he said.

and organised crime. Together, we also need to collaborate on managing migration so that we can keep people safe and provide alternative futures for those considering a dangerous path. This includes stepping up our commitment to a more stable Sahel so we can help tackle extremism and people trafficking.

Young minds across Africa hold the key to discovering brilliant, new solutions to the world’s challenges – including climate change – and to maximising exciting opportunities for both British and African young people. This is why the UK – a world leader and investor in science, innovation and research – is working with, and supporting the development of, the brightest research, academic and entrepreneurial talent from across Africa.

We know the needs and ambitions of modern African nations are changing and we are being innovative in our use of ODA – from supporting Africa’s brightest young technology entrepreneurs, to tackling illicit financial flows and inspiring young people across the continent to stop world-wide plastics pollution.

We are increasing the UK’s presence across the continent – bringing in trade deal experts, investment specialists, health and family planning policymakers, and cutting-edge climate researchers so we can work together to deliver on our shared interests and find solutions to the world’s biggest challenges.

As Prime Minister May visits West Africa as the latest stop on her Africa tour, Deputy High Commissioner to Sierra Leone, Colin Crorkin, looks ahead to the future of the relationship between the UK and Africa. (Photo: UK Prime Minister Theresa May meets the Nigerian President)

Prime Minister May is the first British Prime Minister to visit Sub-Saharan Africa since 2013, and the first to go to Kenya for over 30 years. Africa is a young, vibrant and dynamic continent growing at an extraordinary rate, full of potential to play a transformative role in today’s global economy. As we move towards Brexit, a truly Global Britain is now making a new and distinctive offer to invest in and work alongside African nations for our mutual benefit.

Alongside this rapid growth there are threats and challenges including conflict, migration, climate change and organised crime, and we need to work more closely with our African partners to give the stability and space for prosperity to thrive.

Future generations both in Africa and the UK want us to forge deep, ambitious and dynamic partnerships that make the most of our common links and deliver a safer, healthier and more prosperous future for us all.

The continent of Africa is modernising and innovating at a pace never seen before. It is home to the world’s youngest population, and by 2050, 1 in 4 people on the planet will be African. That’s a quarter of the world’s workforce and a quarter of the world’s consumers. This energy, optimism and vibrancy present huge opportunities – as well as some challenges.

Africa’s long-term stability and success matter greatly to the UK, and we are determined not to be left behind. As we leave the European Union and look to strengthen our global influence, now is the time to deepen our partnerships with African nations.

The UK has a new and unique offer for Africa as a whole. Global Britain is a pioneer of investment and free trade, home to the City of London, cutting-edge science and technology industries, and world-class defence, diplomacy and development expertise. It is these distinctive qualities which the UK will share through partnerships that will deliver the results that African countries want,

strengthening their own stability and boosting their prosperity and growth. At the heart of our modern Industrial Strategy is a commitment to global collaboration and partnership on the future-defining challenges and mutually beneficial opportunities that lay ahead.

Africa is home to some of the fastest emerging global powers in the world. The continent’s total GDP is expected to double between 2015 and 2030, and its economy is expected to be worth $5.6 trillion by 2025 – that’s just seven years away.

Trade has the power to help meet this demand by creating many of these jobs and stimulating the vital investment African countries want to make their economies more diverse, more agile and less dependent on aid. The UK is in pole position to build partnerships which remove barriers to doing business, promote international standards, and open up investment opportunities for everyone.

The City of London is a truly international gateway financial market, and African countries are already alive to the opportunities offered by this global hub of financial expertise. The UK is uniquely positioned to be Africa’s private investment partner of choice with game-changing partnerships to strengthen mutually beneficial commercial partnerships with UK centres of excellence, develop capital markets, build capacity to trade, and support fintech entrepreneurs doing great things with mobile money.

But, in order to deliver prosperity for all, we must also tackle the issues that threaten stability and security head on. It is in all our interests to work alongside our African partners in the fight against global threats that do not respect borders – terrorism, conflict, modern slavery, and serious

African countries have the youngest populations in the world: future generations who have a thirst to take control of their country’s growth and find innovative solutions to their own problems. But this demographic dividend also presents a challenge. Without long-term employment, life-improving opportunities and access to a quality education – especially for girls – we risk economic stagnation, frustrated communities and social breakdown.

That is why the UK’s commitment made on this visit to Africa – of a partnership for prosperity with African nations – must focus on empowering young women with access to quality vocational training and greater choice over their lives, building skills and opportunities, and creating the millions of jobs needed for the growing numbers of young, optimistic, entrepreneurial people entering the job market every year.

It is the youth of Africa who will fuel the growth which will help African nations become our trading partners of the future, if they can access the opportunities they deserve in sectors such as manufacturing, technology and financial services.

We will also therefore build on the progress made at the Commonwealth Summit and its commitment to invest in our shared futures, making the most of our common interests and celebrating the fact that the UK is home to and enriched by, many African communities.

By supporting and strengthening African institutions to keep people safe, promoting the international rules-based system, triggering business growth and trade and empowering young people with skills and future opportunities, we will tackle the root causes of insecurity and allow shared prosperity the space to thrive.

Dano Milk, Officially a Guinness World Records Certificate Holder

5 Women who want to take Buhari’s job Meet the five female presidential aspirants jostling for Buhari’s job at the 2019. September 2018

After successfully setting a new benchmark in the longest drinks-pouring category of Guinness World Records, Arla Dano has been conferred with the global record holder title in the category by the awarding institution.

The recognition is premised on the engagement of over 650 participants to achieve the longest drinks-pouring relay using Dano UHT Milk held on June 1 this year in commemoration of World Milk Day. Government and non-government representatives threw their weight behind the programme which intensified conversations on nutrition, healthy living and the dairy industry in Nigeria.

Despite a barrage of initial challenges to the project, the team behind the brand was able to achieve the feat. Marketing Manager, Ifunanya Obiakor linked the feat to determination, focus & resilience to surmount obstacles.

She notes: "It is said that every great achievement seems impossible at first, until it is done. This saying reflects our journey to obtaining the Guinness World Records certificate for organizing the longest drinkspouring relay. Achieving this feat in the face of obvious obstacles is a testament to the possibilities that abound when the will to win drives exceptional performance and when inner strength is deployed towards tackling and overcoming challenges".

According to Managing Director, Mads Burmester, "We believe this award speaks to the fact that the human mind can achieve whatever it conceives. All that is required is the inner strength to follow through with the vision despite hard times. This is what the Arla Dano brand aims to represent in Nigeria and this is why we will continue to provide Nigerian consumers with high quality dairy products to nourish them well enough to take on their day and life in general"

Nigeria’s presidential elections are taking place in 2019, and many people have put their names up for election, including President Muhammadu Buhari who is seeking a second term.

Among the many presidential hopefuls are six women who want to transform one of Africa’s biggest economies that is riddled with cases of insurgency in the north and corruption allegations across the country. It will not be the first time for women to contest for the presidency but none has been close enough to bring a huge upset to the status quo.

Just like many other women vying for political office, Nigerian women have been subjected to discrimination and sexism, both overt and subtle. A part of the electorate still holds onto the belief that only men are suited to run the country, while another thinks that it is disrespectful for women to rule over men.

Despite all these, women have not been discouraged to run for top offices in the government.

10-Member Yali Team Hold Community Project On Child Abuse In Ghana

Ten individuals from the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) embarked on a project in Ghana with the objective to create sensitization on child abuse and its effects on society. The group also looked into ways to prevent this problem.

The group comprised the following individuals: Francis Amesawu, Frank Amo Boateng, Eleanor Gaysie, Adwoa Agyemang-Benneh, Priscilla Aprepary Adiweh, and Lily Botsyoe Edinam. The others are Sharon Owusu, Abdallah Issah, Inusah Ganiyu, and Emmanuel Williams Tetteh.

A report from Ghanaian Against Child Abuse (GACA); a child protection social drive launched in November 2017 spurred the group into action. According to that GACA report, there is presently more than 90 percent of children in Ghana that have experienced some form of physical violence and more than 21 percent of women aged between 20 and 24 who were married before age 18.

In a conversation with TheAfricanDream.net about the April 2018 project held at the Pentecost Church in Tema, Community One, at the port city of Tema Ghana, Francis Amesawu said “sixteen percent of girls aged between 15 and 19 years had their first experience of sexual intercourse forced against their will.”

were done to tackle the situation involved charging the audience to share what they now know with their neighbors as a way of empowering the vulnerable in society.

Training on proper parenting was given to help in the handling of kids and how to get them therapeutic help in cases of abuse.

Victims were encouraged to share their ordeals as it could create a platform that helps with the healing process. Child abuse can occur anywhere, especially in places deemed safe like schools, religious institutions, and even homes. Coming together to fight the problem was therefore very important Sharon Owusu shared, a project member.

YALI is a signature effort to invest in the next generation of African leaders. Through the YALI Network, young Africans connect with other leaders in their community and access free online courses in topics ranging from entrepreneurship to human rights and civic participation.

For a fuller report on this project and the group’s upcoming projects which hopes to engage mentorship teams comprising social welfare workers to provide or facilitate guidance and counseling for parents and children contact the project via email address edinam1995@gmail.com.

According to Francis, an estimated 23 percent of children aged between five and 14 years are engaged in some form of economic activity in Ghana based on information from the GACA report.

“Our YALI group, selected from an online cohort of over 700 people and trained over a 6month period, intended to equip both children and parents with basic life hacks to identify the many forms of abuse and how to defend and report against them,” Francis said.

Many of these children simply want to live, and if they are born to single parents who are themselves young adults or live in broken homes, it becomes hard to even for them to realize they are being abused, according to some members of the audience at the event.

“If these kids had people to care for them, they wouldn’t find themselves in some of these unfortunate circumstances that force them to beg on the streets, forsaking their education,” said Eleanor Gaysie to TheAfricanDream.net.

Attendees got sensitized on four major forms of abuse which the YALI group pointed out to include emotional abuse, sexual abuse, physical abuse, and neglect. A few of the things that

Kirk Franklin Forgives “Dying” Father Who Gave Him Up For Adoption

Page

American gospel musician, Kirk Franklin, has forgiven his biological father on realising he was going to die in six months from now.

According to the gospel act, he has lived his whole life hating the man who brought him into this world.

In a post he shared on Instagram with a photo of him kissing his dad, Kirk explained why he forgave his dad.

“Two days ago, I received an anonymous call that my biological father, who I never knew, has 3-6 months to live. I’ve lived my entire life hating this man. He and my biological mother gave me up for adoption, and it left me never feeling good enough….to this very day. I took my hate for him and used it as fuel to be the best father I could be for my own. But what I did wrong, is I never took that fuel, and turn it into forgiveness….and that is wrong. Wrong for him, me, and the God I proclaim to represent. How can I preach what I don’t practice? So, I flew to Houston yesterday to do that. It’s painful, it’s a process, but how disappointed I would be in myself for this man to leave this earth without being forgiven. He deserves to receive what God gives me every day. Pray for him, and for me. God this is hard…I weep as I write…” Source:Ghanaweb.com

5 Bizarre Rituals African ‘Pastors’ Perform In The Name Of Religion

African pastors have recently become popular for all the wrong reasons. They are now more known for their extravagant and luxurious lifestyles than for preaching the word of God.

Meet Salma Okonkwo; 48-year-old Businesswoman Bringing the Biggest Solar Farm to Ghana in 2019 September 2 0 1 8

No doubt about it, Ghana will admittedly from next year have one of the biggest solar farms from the African continent, a big thanks to a project funded and constructed by Salma Okonkwo, a reputable Ghanaian entrepreneur and the CEO and founder of UBI Group.

In their quest for this life, many have resorted to bizarre rituals of ‘healing’ and ‘luring’ more people to their churches. Just recently news that a South African pastor, Prophet Rufus Phala, made his congregation drink Jik bleach has been going viral on social media. To see this photo, the churchgoers were required to pay a substantial amount of money.

Vomiting money

In a now-viral video Prophet Andrew Ejimadu, a Nigerian pastor is seen vomiting money to the joy and praise of the congregations. He is seen taking a bag, which he holds over his mouth for a while before showing the church money stuck between his lips.

Okonkwo, after a few years with the Sahara Energy group, thought that the company could develop if it opened up retail gas station but this idea was rubbished several times by the firm when she pitched it to them.

In 2006, and at the age of 36, she decided to put that idea into practice. She left the company and started focusing on bringing liquefied petroleum gas to the remote regions of northern Ghana.

However, she encountered an obstacle she initially did not take into consideration: there were few storage facilities in the North for the liquefied gas. This meant she would have to build the storage herself, and for someone then having financial difficulties, it was going to be difficult.

Consequently, Okonkwo started trading diesel and petroleum wholesale. In 2007, she secured a contract to supply fuel to Dallas-based Kosmos Energy and had a subsequent one with Hess in 2008.

By 2008, her company, UBI opened its first retail gas station. It shortly owned eight stations and managed another 20 through partnerships. This attracted a Singapore-based multinational firm, Puma Energy, which acquired a 49 per cent stake in two of UBI Group’s subsidiaries (retail gas stations and wholesale fuel distribution) in 2013 for about $150 million.

Following the partial acquisition, Okonkwo began developing her solar company, which will spend about $100 million to create 100 megawatts of solar power by early next year.

Construction began this summer and there are plans to add another 100 megawatts by the end of 2020.

The 48-year-old entrepreneur spent most of her childhood years in Accra but she chose her paternal origin in Northern Ghana for her solar farm. This is due to her desire to create employment opportunities for people living there, particularly, women who migrate to urban centres in search of greener pastures, only to end up as “kayayei” (head porters).

Bringing cheap energy to northern Ghana, where many still rely on burning firewood for energy, is Okonkwo’s final goal. In the interim, she is opening a day-care center in Accra for children born to “kayayei” women, where they can “get educated and hopefully break the cycle.”
