Regulation & Market Growth 1. Africa’s gaming regulations differ significantly across jurisdictions. How realistic is regulatory harmonisation across the continent?

Regulatory harmonisation in Africa is achievable, but it will happen progressively rather than through a single unified framework. The continent’s markets differ in legal systems, economic priorities, digital maturity, and political structures. However, we can realistically align around core principles such as responsible gaming standards, AML/CFT requirements, consumer protection, taxation principles, and enforcement against illegal operators. Similar to other sectors in Africa, regional cooperation and minimum standards are more practical than complete uniformity.

2. What are the biggest mistakes governments make when designing gaming tax frameworks?

One of the biggest mistakes is taxing turnover or stakes excessively instead of focusing on Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR). Over-taxation reduces operator sustainability, discourages investment, and ultimately pushes consumers toward illegal and unregulated markets. Another common mistake is introducing multiple overlapping taxes without considering operational realities or market maturity. Sustainable taxation should encourage compliance, channelisation, and long-term industry growth.

3. You’ve spoken about the dangers of over-regulation pushing players toward illegal markets. What would balanced regulation look like in practice?

Balanced regulation protects consumers without making compliance commercially impossible. It involves realistic licensing costs, proportionate taxation, practical responsible gaming measures, strong enforcement against illegal operators, and open dialogue between regulators and industry stakeholders. The objective should be to channel players into safe, regulated environments rather than unintentionally driving them to offshore platforms.

4. Which African markets do you believe are currently setting the strongest example in gaming regulation?

Several African jurisdictions are making notable progress. South Africa has long demonstrated strong compliance and enforcement structures, particularly in AML and licensing oversight. Kenya has shown increasing maturity in regulatory engagement and tax administration. Nigeria continues to evolve rapidly due to market size and innovation, while countries such as Uganda and Ghana are increasingly focusing on balanced regulation and sustainable frameworks. Importantly, no market is perfect, but many are learning and improving.

5. How can regulators better collaborate with operators without compromising integrity and consumer protection?

Collaboration should never be mistaken for regulatory capture. Regulators and operators can engage transparently through consultations, industry working groups, data-sharing initiatives, and policy discussions. Operators often possess valuable market intelligence that can help regulators understand emerging risks, technology developments, and illegal market activity. Effective collaboration leads to betterinformed regulation while maintaining clear governance boundaries.

Operators should move beyond simply meeting minimum legal obligations and actively invest in player protection. Responsible gaming should become part of corporate culture rather than a compliance checkbox.

7. How can the industry better address underage gambling and problem gambling in mobile-first markets?

Mobile-first markets require stronger digital verification systems, improved KYC procedures, integration with telecom and payment systems, and enhanced parental awareness. The industry must also invest in public education campaigns and use technology to detect harmful behavioural patterns early. Mobile accessibility creates opportunities, but it also requires stronger safeguards.

8. Do you believe Africa is doing enough to educate players about responsible betting habits?

Progress is being made, but much more still needs to be done. In many markets, responsible gaming education remains reactive instead of proactive. Operators, regulators, schools, media, and civil society should work together to improve financial literacy, betting awareness, and understanding of gambling risks. Education must be continuous and culturally relevant.

9. What role should technology and AI play in player protection and fraud detection?

Technology and AI will become central to the future of safer gambling. AI can help identify problematic betting behaviour, suspicious transactions, fraud risks, matchfixing indicators, and potential AML concerns in real time. It also improves compliance efficiency and allows for earlier intervention before harm escalates. The key is ensuring these technologies are implemented responsibly and ethically.

Industry Challenges.

10. Illegal gambling remains a growing concern across several markets. What coordinated solutions are urgently needed?

The industry needs stronger cross-border cooperation between regulators, payment providers, telecom companies, law enforcement, and licensed operators. Illegal operators exploit regulatory fragmentation and weak enforcement. Governments must prioritise blocking illegal payment channels, restricting unauthorised advertising, improving digital enforcement capacity, and creating attractive regulated markets that consumers trust.

11. What compliance challenges do operators face when operating across multiple African jurisdictions?

Operators face highly fragmented regulations, inconsistent licensing requirements, varying tax models, different reporting standards, and evolving compliance expectations. In some cases, operators must adapt systems separately for each jurisdiction, which increases costs and operational complexity. Greater regional alignment would significantly improve efficiency and investor confidence.

12. How can governments strike a balance between increasing tax revenues and ensuring operator sustainability?

Governments must recognise that sustainable revenue comes from a healthy regulated market, not from excessive short-term taxation. If taxes become too high, operators reduce investment, jobs are affected, and consumers migrate to illegal platforms.

Balanced taxation encourages compliance, expands the tax base, and supports longterm economic contribution.

13. What are the biggest misconceptions global investors still have about Africa’s gaming market?

Many global investors still view Africa as a single homogeneous market, when in reality it consists of very diverse economies, regulatory environments, and consumer behaviours. Another misconception is that Africa’s growth is purely speculative. In fact, Africa’s digital adoption, mobile penetration, youthful population, and fintech innovation make it one of the most promising emerging gaming markets globally.

Future of African iGaming Alliance.

14. How do you see Africa positioning itself within the global iGaming economy over the next decade?

Africa is likely to become one of the fastest-growing iGaming regions globally. The combination of mobile connectivity, fintech innovation, youthful demographics, and increasing regulatory maturity creates significant potential. The continent may not immediately match Europe in scale, but it can become a global leader in mobile-first gaming innovation and digital betting ecosystems.

15. Could Africa eventually develop unified continental standards for gaming compliance and player protection?

Yes, I believe Africa can develop continental minimum standards over time, particularly around responsible gaming, AML/CFT, consumer protection, and enforcement principles. Organisations, regulators, and industry associations already recognise the need for greater alignment. While full harmonisation may take time, regional frameworks and common standards are realistic and necessary.

16. What emerging trends should operators and investors be paying close attention to right now?

Key trends include AI-driven compliance and player protection, embedded fintech solutions, localisation of content, regulatory modernisation, digital identity verification, esports growth, and increasing focus on responsible gaming. Investors should also pay attention to regulatory stability and market channelisation, as these will heavily influence long-term sustainability.

17. Do you believe esports, crash games, and digital entertainment convergence will reshape the African market?

Absolutely. African consumers are increasingly engaging with digital entertainment ecosystems that combine gaming, social interaction, streaming, esports, and betting.

Crash games and esports have already demonstrated strong traction, particularly among younger mobile-first audiences. The future market will likely be driven by entertainment convergence, where operators provide broader digital experiences rather than traditional betting products alone.

11. What will determine whether an operator succeeds or fails in emerging markets?

1. Your transition from B2C-focused environments into the B2B platform space has been significant.

What mindset shifts were necessary to succeed on both sides of the industry?

Execution and adaptability. The operators that succeed are usually the ones that listen carefully to local realities instead of forcing global strategies onto regional markets.

The biggest shift was moving from short-term player-focused thinking to long-term operator-focused thinking. In B2C, the focus is often on acquisition, retention, and reacting quickly to market trends. In B2B, you need to think about scalability, infrastructure, compliance, and how to help clients remain competitive over several years, not just several campaigns.

Sustainable growth also depends heavily on operational discipline. Fast expansion without strong payments, compliance, customer support, and localisation almost always creates problems later.

I also learned that B2B success is heavily built on trust and reliability. Operators are not just buying a product; they are choosing a long-term partner. That changes the way you approach decisionmaking, communication, and even product development.

They are absolutely essential. Local payment providers, affiliates, and technology partners often understand the market far better than international companies entering for the first time.

2. Leadership in iGaming has evolved dramatically over the years. What qualities define an effective iGaming leader today?

Adaptability is probably the most important quality today. The industry moves too quickly for rigid leadership styles. Regulations change, technologies evolve, and player expectations shift constantly, so leaders need to be comfortable operating in uncertainty while still giving teams direction and stability.

At the same time, strong communication and emotional intelligence have become far more important than they were years ago. Modern leadership is less about controlling every detail and more about building strong teams, empowering specialists, and creating alignment across departments.

3. You’ve spoken about adaptability becoming more important than command-and-control leadership. How can companies cultivate that culture internally?

It starts by creating an environment where people are not afraid to challenge ideas or experiment.

Companies that punish mistakes too aggressively usually end up with teams that avoid innovation entirely. Adaptability comes from encouraging learning, open communication, and cross-functional collaboration.

Leadership also has to lead by example. If management resists change, teams will naturally become resistant as well. The companies that adapt best are usually the ones where leadership stays curious, transparent, and willing to evolve alongside the market.

Modern platforms are designed around flexibility and modularity, while many legacy systems were built for a very different era of iGaming. Operators today want to launch quickly, localise efficiently, and integrate new products without rebuilding their infrastructure every time.

The biggest difference is agility. Modern providers understand that operators need the ability to adapt rapidly to regulations, payment trends, and player behavior. Static “one-size-fits-all” systems simply struggle to keep up with today’s market realities.

5. Many operators want faster launches and localised experiences. How is BetStarters helping brands compete in fragmented markets?

We focus heavily on modularity and localisation. Different markets require different payment methods, compliance rules, player journeys, and even UX approaches. Our platform is designed so operators can adapt quickly without needing months of redevelopment work.

We also work closely with clients operationally, not just technically. Entering fragmented markets successfully requires local understanding, flexible integrations, and fast execution, which is where strong B2B partnerships become extremely valuable.

6. What are the biggest operational mistakes you see new operators making when entering emerging gaming markets?

One of the biggest mistakes is assuming successful European strategies will automatically work elsewhere. Emerging markets often have completely different payment habits, trust levels, player expectations, and regulatory realities. Localisation is not optional anymore.

Another common mistake is focusing too heavily on acquisition while underestimating operations, compliance, and retention. Scaling quickly without stable infrastructure usually creates long-term problems that become difficult and expensive to fix later.

7. From your perspective, what makes a successful long-term partnership between a platform provider and an operator?

Transparency and alignment are critical. The strongest partnerships happen when both sides see each other as long-term collaborators rather than vendor and customer. Open communication and realistic expectations make a huge difference.

Flexibility also matters. Markets change constantly, so partnerships only survive long term if both parties can adapt together. Operators need providers that evolve with them, not systems that become limitations after a few years.

Africa & Emerging Markets 8. What excites you most about Africa’s iGaming trajectory over the next five years?

Africa has one of the youngest and most mobile-first populations in the world, which creates enormous long-term potential for digital entertainment and betting products. The passion for sports, especially football, is already there, but now the infrastructure is also catching up.

What excites me most is that many African markets are still shaping their future. Operators and technology providers have the opportunity to build products specifically for local realities instead of simply copying mature European models.

9. African markets are diverse in regulation, payments, and player behavior. How should operators approach localisation?

Operators need to stop thinking about Africa as one single market. Every country has different payment ecosystems, levels of smartphone penetration, regulations, and cultural attitudes toward gambling. Localisation needs to go far beyond language.

12. How important are partnerships with local providers when scaling in Africa?

Strong partnerships reduce operational risk, improve trust with players, and help operators adapt faster to changing market conditions. In emerging markets especially, success is rarely achieved alone.

AI, Technology & Innovation 13. Which areas of the player journey will AI transform the fastest?

Personalisation will probably evolve the fastest. AI is already improving content recommendations, bonus targeting, customer segmentation, and player engagement in real time.

Risk management and responsible gaming will also change significantly. AI can identify unusual behavior patterns much earlier than humans, helping operators improve fraud prevention and player protection simultaneously.

14. How do operators balance hyper-personalisation with responsible gaming obligations?

Personalisation should enhance the experience without becoming manipulative. There is a fine line between understanding player preferences and encouraging harmful behavior, which operators need to handle carefully.

The best approach is using AI not only for engagement but also for protection. The same technology that personalises offers can also identify risky behavior and trigger safeguards earlier.

15. Which manual processes in iGaming will disappear entirely?

A lot of repetitive operational tasks will become heavily automated, especially in areas like reporting, fraud monitoring, CRM segmentation, and certain customer support workflows.

However, I don’t think human involvement disappears entirely. Automation will remove repetitive tasks, but strategic thinking, relationship management, and decision-making will still require people.

16. How do you evaluate whether a new technology trend is valuable or hype?

I usually ask one simple question: what real problem does it solve? The industry sometimes becomes obsessed with trends before understanding their actual value.

Technology only matters if it improves efficiency, player experience, compliance, or scalability. If it exists purely for marketing headlines, it rarely delivers long-term impact.

17. What role do integrations play in building competitive platforms today?

Integrations are now fundamental to platform competitiveness. Operators want ecosystems, not isolated systems. The ability to connect seamlessly with CRM tools, payment providers, game studios, and analytics platforms has become a major advantage.

In many African markets, betting volumes are high but average bet sizes are often smaller compared to mature markets, so operators need products and promotional structures adapted to local realities. Minimum bet levels, bonus structures, tournament formats, and even how games are presented need to reflect local player behavior. We’ve already seen African culture shape international entertainment through movements like Afrobeats and Amapiano, which started locally and eventually became global trends influencing music, fashion, nightlife, and social media worldwide. I believe gaming and interactive entertainment can follow a very similar trajectory. Honestly, if I had to pick the markets keeping me up at night with excitement, I’d point to Nigeria, Kenya, and increasingly Tanzania and Côte d’Ivoire. Nigeria is the obvious one. We have over 220 million people, a deeply embedded sports culture, and a mobile penetration rate that just keeps climbing. But what makes it truly compelling is the youth demographic. The median age is under 18, which means you’re looking at a wave of legal-age bettors entering the market every single year for the foreseeable future. Kenya has already proven the model works; MPesa made frictionless payments a reality long before most of the world caught up, and that ecosystem gave operators a genuine blueprint. The market is maturing, yes, but maturity brings sophistication, and sophisticated bettors spend more consistently. Then there’s the tier-two story.

Tanzania is opening up economically in ways that would have seemed impossible a decade ago. Côte d’Ivoire has a growing middle class and strong French-language operator infrastructure. Namibia and Ghana sit right behind them. The smart money both literally and figuratively is looking at these markets now, before the land grab begins in earnest.

It’s not just important, it’s the whole game. I’ve seen operators arrive in Africa with a copy-past European product and wonder why they’re bleeding money. The continent isn’t a single market. It fifty-four distinct countries, hundreds of languages, different sporting passions, different trust relationships with financial institutions, and wildly different regulatory expectations.

Take something as simple as football. In Nigeria, the English Premier League drives enormous volume. Hop across to South Africa and you’re dealing with a strong domestic league loyalty alongside rugby. In East Africa, the appetite for virtual sports is massive partly because local leagues have shorter seasons and partly because connectivity gaps make live betting trickier in certain regions. Payment localization is probably where operators get hurt most badly when they cut corners. The model I’d advocate for is a graduated, volume-sensitive tax structure that gives emerging operators room to build a compliant, responsible business before the full weight of regulation lands on them. At the same time, regulators absolutely must ring-fence a portion of revenue for social programmes, problem gambling support, youth protection, financial literacy. That’s not optional. It’s what gives the industry its social license to operate. Kenya’s journey is instructive here. The dramatic tax hikes of 2019 caused significant market disruption and drove players toward offshore operators. They’ve since recalibrated, and the lesson was hard-earned. I’d rather regulators across the continent learn from Nairobi’s experience than repeat it. The sweet spot is a framework that says: we want a legal, competitive, consumer-protected industry, and here is a tax structure that lets that industry thrive while contributing meaningfully to society. It’s achievable. It just requires genuine dialogue between government and industry rather than adversarial posturing.

If I have to give one answer, I’ll say Nigeria but with important caveats. Nigeria has everything a longterm structural case requires: population scale, an existing and deeply embedded betting culture, an increasingly coherent regulatory framework under the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority and the newly consolidated national framework, and a technology ecosystem that is producing world-class fintech and gaming startups domestically. That last point matters enormously.

My dark horse? South Africa remains structurally the most mature and legally sophisticated market on the continent, and as it opens further to online betting, the combination of disposable income levels and regulatory clarity could make it exceptional. It doesn’t have Nigeria’s raw growth numbers, but it has something arguably more valuable for long-term operators: predictability.

Your background in sportsbook risk management gives you a unique perspective. What separates successful sportsbook operations from struggling ones?

The difference between a sportsbook that thrives and one that bleeds money quietly into oblivion often comes down to one thing: discipline in the face of pressure. Anyone can build a sportsbook.

You license a platform, integrate a feed provider, put up some markets done. But running one profitably is an entirely different discipline. What I’ve observed consistently is that successful operators treat risk management as a revenue function, not a compliance function. They understand that their margin isn’t just set by the odds compiler, it’s actively defended every single day.

The operators who struggle tend to share a common trait: they’re reactive. They get hammered on a market, then they restrict it. They get exploited by sharp bettors, then they panic and limit everyone. That creates a terrible product experience and drives away recreational bettors the ones you actually want. The best operations I’ve seen build tiered customer strategies. They identify who their sharp bettors are early, they manage exposure intelligently rather than just cutting stakes, and they invest heavily in understanding why they’re losing on a specific market before they take any action. To me, winning edge is not about technology or AI-innovation, or money. I believe that team, colleagues, and leaders who push companies or the whole industry are our “winning edge”. Because the power is not only within us, but also in people around us who do the same thing. We are in the same boat. Outside of work, what motivates and inspires me are: family, culture, mentorship, growth and nature.

18. If you could change one thing about Africa’s gaming industry today, what would it be?

It definitely would be how the industry sees retail. Most of the big tech companies and product thinking go into apps, but in markets like Kenya the betting shop is still where people actually play and meet with the industry. That ground floor is underserved. I'd want more of the industry to build for it, for real connectivity, real hardware budgets, do that right and care for players. Get that, and everything else follows: local jobs, sustainable operators and networks, players who are properly looked after.

19. What legacy do you hope to leave within the African gaming space over the next decade?

A decade from now, I'd want it to be normal that world-class gaming technology is built in Africa and for Africa, not imported and adapted as an afterthought. If I've done my job, the next generation of operators, vendors or providers won't see that as ambitious. They'll see it as obvious. And I'd be proud if a few of the people leading that shift started out on a team I am part of.

Huge differences. Kenyans love trust‐based systems and M‐Pesa integration, they want quick, clean interfaces. Nigerians are more aggressive risk‐takers, higher volatility and faster rounds work well. Ghanaians respond to community leaderboards and social sharing. South Africans are more brand‐conscious and demand high production polish alongside localisation. One size never fits all. That’s why for some products we make separate builds for each market rather than a single “Africa” game.

Why is technical localisation just as important as cultural localisation in Africa?

A beautiful game that crashes on a Tecno Spark is useless. Technical localisation means respecting the player’s wallet and device. If your game is 100MB, a player in Lagos might spend their whole daily data budget on one download. If it lags on 3G, they will abandon it. We compress assets, optimise draw calls, and test on real low‐end phones. Cultural relevance gets them in the door; technical reliability keeps them there.

We prioritise performance first, then add beauty in layers. We have a rule: “Make it work on the worst device, then make it look good on better devices.” We use smart compression, texture atlasing, and reduce frame rates for animations where possible. It’s essential for cultural sovereignty and economic value. When we consume imported games, money leaves the continent and our stories are told by outsiders. Personally, it was a reminder of how far I’ve come. I entered the iGaming industry without any prior knowledge of it, and what followed was years of learning, adapting, making mistakes, growing, and embracing opportunities. To be recognized in a space that was once completely unfamiliar to me was both surreal and rewarding. Professionally, the recognition affirmed my belief that innovation is not limited to technology or products alone ,it is also about mindset, problem-solving, relationship building, and finding new ways to create value. At the same time, I see the recognition as a shared achievement. No journey happens in isolation. They can quickly tell the difference between a brand that is here for short-term acquisition and one that is genuinely building a long-term ecosystem. Sustainable growth comes from more than promotions. It comes from fast payouts, reliable deposits, strong customer support, responsible gaming practices, relevant campaigns, and a product that works seamlessly on mobile. Brands that struggle usually depend too heavily on bonuses without building emotional connection, loyalty, or trust. For me, the winning edge is combining marketing, product, data, and customer experience into one strategy. You cannot market a poor product for long. Eventually, the player experience becomes the real brand.

If marketing is running a campaign but the product journey has friction, conversion will drop. If tech is launching a feature without marketing input, adoption may be low. If CX is seeing repeated complaints but product is not listening, retention will suffer.

Localization means using the right language, channels, payment methods, ambassadors, offers, and tone. The mistake some brands make is copying and pasting global campaigns into African markets. The African player wants to feel seen. It is not just about campaigns. It is about understanding the full business and creating strategies that move the brand forward. Curiosity has been very important. I always try to understand not just what is happening, but why it is happening. Whether it is customer behavior, product performance, campaign results, or market trends, I like to go deeper. Another principle is continuous learning. The gaming industry changes quickly, so you cannot rely only on what worked yesterday. You have to keep learning about technology, data, regulation, product, and consumer behavior. I also believe in being hands-on.

Strategy is important, but execution teaches you the real lessons. Being close to the work, the teams, and the customer helps me stay adaptable.

Africa's iGaming demand grew 25% year-on-year in Q1 2026. You've probably heard that number today. You'll hear it again before the Summit ends.

25% sounds like a story. It's a disguise. Behind that aggregate, Botswana ran 1,147% growth in twelve months — from 1.7 million to 21.1 million Blask Index points. Nigeria added more than 50 million Index points. In the same period, Ethiopia shed 72% of its demand. Rwanda dropped 21%. Three markets contracted while the rest expanded. These are not statistical outliers. They are the actual market.

Most operators at conferences like this one are building strategy around the headline, not the breakdown. The appeal is understandable. A single growth number is easy to present to a board.

At the same time, responsible gaming and technological innovation are becoming central to the future of Africa’s gaming ecosystem. Operators are being encouraged to move beyond minimum compliance requirements by investing in player protection tools, affordability monitoring, behavioural analytics, and stronger digital verification systems to combat underage and problem gambling. Artificial Intelligence and advanced technologies are also playing an increasingly important role in fraud detection, compliance monitoring, and identifying harmful betting behaviours in real time.
