et’s talk about cultural extinction for a second (place unusually loud star wars music here for effect) yes this is absolutely a very dramatic issue requiring your full attention, so lets start again CULTURAL EXTINCTION! Right so I am a 37 year old stand up comedian from Zimbabwe who is married but has no kids, I wonder though if I had kids would I read them bedtime stories from my very impressive list of western fairy tales of Cinderella and Goldilocks? Yes probably because those would be the only ones available for download on my android device, anything AFRICAN? Probably not. Why? Because of CULTURAL EXTINCTION. This is caused by a general inability in AFRICA to immortalise our STORIES our MEMORIES in the GLOBAL technological space, hence this magazine. This is not the remedy of course, but a single initiative to get the ball rolling. HOW? You ask. Well as a comedian my fellow African Comedians have been telling awesomely funny stories for decades but no-one really curating this
L
content and energy and making sure generations to come can consume all the precious content. I will tell you a story, I became the first Zimbabwean comedian to perform at Comedy Central Africa’s International Comedy Festival. I met an executive producer of an animation being launched at Comedy Central called My Child Teenage Mutant Azanians. As we talked we realised the need to put together a cast of African Comics in our plan to immortalise AFRICAN CONTENT for the world to enjoy. We realised that combining the comics from all African Countries we would have a catchment area and reach of hundreds of millions of Africans and also access to amazing stories from all the African countries involved. Yes My Child is an ADULT cartoon a combination of what would happen if South Park, Animal Farm and some African Dictators had a baby. But this is only the start in generating AFRICAN STORYTELLING and STORYTELLERS the world has ever seen. Make sure to keep checking for updates of our monthly publication. We humbly introduce you to the talent in AFRICA, the funniest new African STORYTELLERS. Enjoy our first issue!
WHAT THE ALIENS LEAR While we were most fascinated by their technology, the Chiapenn (or butterfly aliens) marveled at our way of life. The United Communities of Earth were delighted. They had expected to give up vast reserves of raw materials. Instead, all the visitors wanted were details about our customs.
Quite wisely Musa Nxumalo, chairperson of the UCE, decided to ration cultural information. And so it came to pass that when the leader of the butterfly aliens asked about something it had heard on a radio transmission called ‘Bingo’, Musa smiled enigmatically. “Bingo. That is one of humanity’s most sacrosanct traditions. We will give you the history of Bingo in exchange for the design of your needleshaped space ship.” The aliens conferred in their language of clicks, whoops and flapping wings then their leader spoke. “We wish not just knowledge. We wish to see this Bingo.” “You drive a hard bargain,” replied Musa. He and the other diplomats made a grand show of discussing the proposal before conceding. “We agree to your terms and as an act of good faith we shall not only allow you to see Bingo, you will be able to play Bingo as well.”
The next day, three of the butterfly aliens were escorted to a Bingo Hall and provided ingeniously manufactured pencils that they could hold in their beak like hands. The results were rigged. Musa Nxumalo felt it would be better if the butterfly aliens won more often than they lost. He needn’t have bothered. Winning meant nothing to them. They were more interested in watching and smelling the human players. They were so intent on their observation that they missed two opportunities to win. The first winner of the night was Sian Chapel, an elderly Welsh lady who got up and yelled, “Bingo! Thank you Jesus! Bingo!” The elaborate patterns on the large wings of the aliens
began to scintillate. “Yeeesus?” the lead alien asked. “We heard this word much in the radio transmissions. Is it Bingo word?” Jane Goodall was the aliens’ guide and she explained, “ Jesus is the son of God.” The butterfly aliens’ wings began to flap. “We heard ‘God’ many times also.” “God is the creator of all things,” she began. Jane Goodall gave the aliens a brief summary of the Christian faith and the aliens listened intently. At one point she said, “… and in this

RNT AT THE BINGO HALL way we learn what the creator wants from us.” The aliens’ wings suddenly stopped flapping and all the color in them leached away. One of the aliens made two gurgles followed by a sharp click. The other two aliens did the same and then, without explanation, they got up and left the Bingo Hall. Gurgle, gurgle, sharp click is a difficult Chiapenn word to translate. A good start would be to explain that the butterfly aliens analyze every action in terms of its practicality. They have one hundred and ninety six words describing each
level of practicality. Flap, flap, whine is the lowest level. Scratching an itchy spot under your carapace is a flap, flap, whine action. An essential action like breathing is click, whistle, jiggle your mandibles. Even it is not at the top of the hierarchy because one can stop breathing for a while and still be alive. Gurgle, gurgle, sharp click is the word that would be used to describe the most fundamental, essential and practical actions. At the point when the Chiapenn came to Earth, gurgle, gurgle, sharp click had not been applied to any action. Their
philosophers discussed gurgle, gurgle, sharp click solely as a theoretical concept. At first, the human race perplexed the Chiapenn for most of our actions were below even flap, flap, whine importance. Going to the cinema, line dancing, playing tennis… There was no logic the butterfly aliens could see. And then they met Jane Goodall. At first, Christian faith sounded as pointless as playing Bingo. It would never occur to a Chiapenn to wonder whether or not there was a creator. However, when Jane Goodall added “… in this way we learn what the creator
wants from us” she took them by surprise. If there was a creator, that creator must have created everything for a practical purpose. Ergo, if there was a creator, fulfilling that purpose was gurgle, gurgle, sharp click. The next day Musa Nxumalo brought a large brief case with him. Inside it he had photographs of a game of cricket, children blowing bubbles and youtube kitten videos. Musa was taken aback when the aliens brushed away his enticing photographs and demanded to know more about ‘Yeeesus’ and ‘God Almighty.’ “I’m not the one to answer that,” he replied, “I’m a Hindu.” “What is that?”. Musa
WHAT THE ALIENS LEAR explained and every word he said drove the butterfly aliens into a greater state of agitation. “The other human said the Yeesus and the God was the truth. How can this you say be true?” “The human race has at least thirty major religions and that’s not counting all the different denominations and movements. Each faith is convinced that theirs is the one and only truth. There are also people who are agnostics and atheists. It’s not worth your time. The game of cricket far more engaging, just you wait until I tell you about golden ducks.” The lead butterfly alien shrieked in response. “How can there be many truths? One is true, others not true.” Its wings began to flap rapidly. Musa tried to reason with the creature. “Our religious books are full of accounts of what happened but they are impossible to verify
because we can’t travel in time.” The lead butterfly alien’s wings went bright blue. It spoke in a sharp staccato. “You have asked for one item of our technology after another. Why not be more practical? Here.” One of its companions pulled out a stack of discs. “This is all our scientific. We will give you this for every book of your Christians, Hindus, Atheists and every other. Give us access to your wise knowledge people. You may be unable to prove which is [gurgle, gurgle, sharp click] but we can. We can travel in time.” The deal was struck. The Chiapenn discovered how to travel in time two hundred and thirty earth years earlier. They had not used the technology since because time travel was less practical than flap, flap, click, whine. The past could be observed but
nothing could be changed. Catastrophes could not be averted; the long dead could not be asked questions. Now however, the technology had a purpose. Once the Chiapenn had all of the earth’s theories in hand they began a process of elimination. A team of butterfly aliens read through stacks of human theology and made a list of facts that could be verified. Other Chiapenn were tasked with manning time ships and checking whether the events had happened as described. Off they went, traveling to the Galilees, Bombays, and Mozambiques of the distant past. The poor Chiapenn assigned with the investigation had to check up on whether Thor was really outwitted by Utgaroa-Loki and whether Ogoun really appeared before Haitan slaves in 1804. Religious texts rarely provide exact dates so their needle shaped
timeships had to literally sift through a haystack. The reports began to come back showing that religious text after religious text was full of errors. They did see some marvels that defied logic such as a body of water parting after being hit with a piece of wood and the transformation of a meditating monk into pure energy, but that was beside the point. Every time they got excited because they had found a few accurate reports in a religious text, it quickly proved itself to be nonsense at another point. Even belief structures that were not called religions were scrutinized and thrown out after the Chiapenn observed oddities such as a big squelch rather than a big bang and a series of glowing creatures that coexisted with, and controlled, the dinosaurs. After 7 weeks and two days of study (they had
RNT AT THE BINGO HALL found errors in every single system of human belief but one. Only one religion had a text that was 100% accurate, the Church of Papilio. The church of Papilio was exactly 62 days old. It had begun shortly after the butterfly aliens had first contacted earth. Every word inscribed in The Book of Big Wings was accurate as it was all verbatim quotations. “This is it,” said one of the Chiapenn. “The truth.” “But it does not tell us what the creator wishes of us.” The lead butterfly alien held up The Book of Big Wings. “Who wrote this? The wise human of this must know.” The founder of the Papilio faith was Anna Nguyen, a reclusive woman who never brushed her teeth. She lived in a house on stilts in Bangkok that she shared with a chameleon. Six months ago she
had been dismissed as a conspiracy theorist; now she was adulated as a high priestess. Not by everybody; her many applications to be allowed to speak with the Chiapenn had all been rejected by the UCE. Anna was unsurprised by the treatment. She had been demonized and laughed at all her life. That Monday morning, when she opened her door to find a trio of butterfly aliens, she did not faint or scream. She curtsied. “Welcome,” she said. “Come right in.” The three aliens walked into her apartment. “Could I offer you anything? Green tea perhaps?” “No thank you,” said the lead butterfly alien. “But we would like some fruit.” Anna Nguyen Tang served the aliens some mango slices. “Who created us?” The lead butterfly alien asked. “And what do they want of us?” “You test me?” Anna
replied, confident. “I expected that. No-one created you. You are the butterfly gods. All that matters is what you want of us humans.” The Chiapenn were stunned and a little relieved. Their time ships’ travels into their own past had not revealed a creator but the possibility of a creator who employed stealth technology worried them. The second part of Anna’s statement made one of the other butterfly aliens curious. “You said all that matters is what we want from you? What do we want from you?” Anna laughed. She had honestly expected the gods to test her more severely. “You have come to judge the sinners. You have watched the way the populace of earth waste their time on idle practices like playing Bingo.” “We did watch them,” screeched the lead butterfly alien, his wings a bright purple. “She is
right.” “And then…” “And then,” Anna pointed to newspaper articles covering the Chiapenn’s search for the one true religion. “You began to search for the faithful.” “You speak true again wise human.” “And now you will judge the sinners.” The butterfly aliens exchanged perplexed glances. “How will we judge them?” Her voice trembled with fiery passion as she declared, “The unbelievers will be sent to a hell of fire and made to pay for their sins. While we, your faithful followers, will be taken to the heavens to live with you.” The butterfly aliens listened intently and deliberated. Anna’s sentence for the rest of humanity struck them as harsh but then again, she was the priestess of the religion without errors so she must be right.

HOW TO BREAK A WORLD RECORD TELLING
JOKES?
Zimbabwean stand up comedian Carl Joshua Ncube woke up to a nightmare when an application he made to guinness book of records over 6 months ago was approved to attempt a world record attempt of most stand up comedy gigs in 7 days.
RECORD DEFINITION
This record is for the greatest number of comedy gigs performed at different venues within one week. This record is to be attempted by a comedy act.
GUINNESS BOOK OF RECORDS CONDITIONS
For the purposes of this record a comedy gig must be over 30 minutes in length and given before a paying audience (in receipt of printed tickets) in a recognised venue, which normally stages comedy nights.
Rules for Most comedy gigs in one week Each concert must be given before a paying audience (in receipt of printed tickets) in a recognised venue, which normally stages comedy nights. The venue can be a theatre, conference or community centre, exhibition hall, public hall, or public house with a capacity for a seated audience. As an alternative, a stadium registered for staging concerts and similar events may be used. Tickets must be advertised and available for sale to the general public through the usual outlets. The concerts should be accessible to members of the press for the purposes of standard reviews.
The wife/manager/business partner and I will fly out to Cape Town to start this amazing journey. What I have had to do is speak to my awesome friends at the Cape Town Comedy club to build my other shows around a slot at their club, I have also spoken to Gino Fernandez a local comedian who has always had my back in the comedy industry to see if he can point me out to some gigs on Long Street or at the famous Armchair in OBSERVATORY. Because I have to do 30 minute performances as a minimum I can also try to get a UNIVERSITY or COLLEGE to host one of the shows. Thats day 1 budget number of shows is 4. Fly out to Johannesburg where the Goliath Comedy Club is going to host me on day 2. Unfortunately because of time constraints I was not able to fit in Parkers Comedy club, but I am sure there are going to be some comedy nights happening in Johannesburg as some of my comedian friends run some awesome spots around the city. Again if I am able to get a university or 2 on board I can get or fit in 2 more comedy nights bringing my tally of gigs in Johannesburg to 5.
Flight out to Harare for the most hectic part of the record attempt. Harare will include gigs in cinemas hopefully STER KINEKOR will chip in a few. Moto Republic a co-working space and venue that has hosted comedy nights before then the same night some of the history comedy venues in Harare will host some comedy like Sopranos, Zimbabwe German Society and Pariah State Borrowdale finishing off our third night with a tally of 6 gigs. Day 4 will see SATURDAY starting out with another cinema gig, then a shopping mall Joina City who are always willing to host so many different events. I go to my former school Prince Edward which is the first school in Zimbabwe to actually have a COMEDY CLUB as an after school activity, then later its Alliance and REPS theatre sharing the evening with Pariah State Avondale finishing another late night of comedy bringing our total num-
ber of Gigs that night to 6 gigs. Sunday is not a traditional day for comedy yet we have a whopping 9 gigs on this day with 2 early gigs at churches that have hosted some of my early stand up comedy gigs. We then perform at an outdoor venue at a gig called UNPLUGGED, an open air brand for budding artists and established performers. We hit the road to Oliver Mtukudzi’s PAKARE PAYE for a late afternoon BRAAI comedy show, then we leave for my hometown Kadoma for an early comedy show at the VIP lounge. Off we go again to KWEKWE for one show before we end the day with a comedy show in GWERU at the Village lodge. That day will probably be a record for Zimbabwe. Monday we are in the city of kings where I was born. We have an early show at the National University of
Science and Technology, probably our biggest show of the entire tour…I hope. We then do a show at NESBITT CASTLE in the big tent before we go into town to do one venue yet to be announced before finishing off the night at LAGONDOLA and we hopefully end our Bulawayo gigs with 4 gigs for the night Tuesday is our most hectic day from a country perspective as we get to perform in ZAMBIA, BOTSWANA and ZIMBABWE on the same day. We arrive in the tourist town of Victoria Falls performing on a cruise boat or two then its off to KASANE in Botswana for a show at a LODGE and then LIVINGSTONE in Zambia for a hotel comedy show in ZAMBIA before ending the night at the wonderful Victoria Falls Safari Lodge. All the shows will be done in aid of ANTI POACHING organisation VFAPU Victoria Falls Anti Poaching Unit. This will be the grand finale giving us a whopping 35 comedy shows performed in 7 days. But thats not over, we have to tally all the data required by GUINNESS BOOK OF RECORDS and hopefully we will announce a date for a GRAND SHOW where we find out our fate.
MY CHILD SYNOPSIS M
y Child: Teenage Mutant Azanians tells the story of Professor Afronaut, Africa’s top technocrat, as he pilots the maiden voyage of Africa’s first space tourism programme, together with Africa’s top leaders and celebrities. Whilst in flight, a cunning chimpanzee is released from his cage in stowage and in the ensuing bedlam the ape bites the spacecraft’s nuclear stabilizer. There is an almighty atomic explosion and all these leaders and celebrities are crossmutated with adolescent animals. These animal-human hybrids return to Earth and are subsequently exiled to the land of Azania. It is here that Professor Afronaut founds the Nelson Mandela School for Gifted Mutants, with melodrama and comedy playing out amongst the characters with very different backgrounds and divergent personalities. Offensive, satirical and animated, the show is best described as South Park spliced with Animal Farm.

SALVADO
y Child: Teenage Mutant Azanians adds Salvado, Uganda’s top comedian, to its already bourgeoning cast of comedic talents. ot on the heels of Zimbabwe’s top comedian Carl Joshua Ncube, Uganda’s top comedian Salvado has joined the My Child: Teenage Mutant Azanians team. The man who once worked as a telecommunications engineer has experienced a meteoric rise in the 7 short years since he placed runner-up in MNET’s Standup Uganda in 2009. Salvado is now considered one of the preeminent names in East African comedy confirmed by the Male Comedian of the Year award that he won at the Uganda Entertainment Awards in October 2015.
S
alvado met My Child: Teenage Mutant Azanians exec-producer, Nick Wilson, backstage at the Comedy Central International Comedy Festival in
December 2015. Salvado performed in The Best Of Africa Lineup, whilst the pilot of My Child: Teenage Mutant Azanians was premiered live at the festival as part of a mixed media event featuring the standup comedy of the prominent comedians in the voice cast- Richelieu Beaunoir, Nina Hastie, Griffy 2Trillion (US), Mpho Popps and host Trevor Gumbi. The 2 struck up a conversation, exchanged details and committed to finding a way to work together in the future.
N
ick Wilson said of their meeting; “Salvado is, apart from being crazyhilarious, an incredibly talented guy. Hearing about his philanthropy in his home country (he has opened a school for 10 children) and what he is doing in rebranding Africa, I was really inspired to work with him.”
