ACRES HOME RESIDENT REINVENTS SELF AT 68 HOUSTON – Authorities were investigating the deaths of two Houston area women who were shot and killed in two different sides of town over the New Year’s holiday. One shooting appears to be accidental, while the other was more of a targeted attack, according to reports. In southeast Houston, 79-year-old Owena McHenry, as identified by her sister, was found shot in the head in her Sunnyside home in the 5800 block of Flamingo Drive. Police believe the shooting was targeted, because this was the second time officers responded to her home for a shooting report on the same day. DEATH continued on page 3

And more than his handsome outward appearance, inside he is humble, gracious and extremely grateful for the opportunity he says God has bestowed upon him. At 68 years of age, he’s reinventing himself and loving every minute of it. Charles Lonzo Brown is a style consultant for Suit Mart located off I-45 and Aldine Bender, and, always being a “sharp-dressed man,” he loves to help others look their best, especially young Black men during prom season.
“To see those mothers coming in with their sons, some of them not knowing what they want, some of them never owning a suit,” Brown said. “To help them leave there with their heads up and smiles on their faces, that’s better than gold and silver to me.” And as much as he loves to help others shine, he had a longtime dream of his own. “I’ve always liked to dress. I always like to look nice and I was encouraged by relatives and friends of mine that I should apply for modeling school,” he explained. “One of my friends suggested that I contact 40 Plus Models.” Brown did and sent his

GENERATIONAL WEALTH THROUGH OWNERSHIP Partin’ the Waters

One of the immortals, Lady Billy Holiday sang, “God bless the child. Mama may have, Papa may have, but God bless the child that has got his own.” In “Roots,” a free black man called Chicken George, descendant of Kunta Kinte made and kept a promise that he would come back and bring them out of slavery. Chicken George knew that he had to establish a base in order to liberate his family. Chicken George embraced self-determination. Self-determination is the second principle of Kwanza. It means to name, define, speak for ourselves and determine our own destiny as free people. Harold Cruse in the Crisis of the Negro Intellectual, a Bible for assisting in establishing Black identity, purpose and direction, lamented that in a country based on ownership of private property that the privileged classes of Black people have not properly sought and advanced ownership of
property by the masses of our people. A Houston developer on YouTube remarked that in Third Ward, rapidly becoming Midtown, that 70% of those living in Third Ward did not own their homes. In historic Fifth Ward, statistics reveal that 85% of those living in Fifth Ward do not own their homes. Ownership is a basis for personal, family and community power. As the white supremacist senator said in “Roots” following the collapse of slavery, whoever owns the land will rule the people. In 2020 and beyond, SANKOFA requires that the emphasis must be on ownership. Ownership for families and communities. If you travel down Cullen Boulevard from Griggs Road to Sims Bayou, the chief businesses will be dozens of barber and beauty supply houses that are legitimately owned by outsiders. Chicken George was the forerunner of Good Times and the quest to get a piece of the pie to ensure black well-being. Ownership 101 says that practical wisdom requires that we move away from renting wheels and furniture. Continue reading on

WHY DON’T YOU GO BACK TO WHERE YOU CAME FROM? The next time someone tells you to go back to Africa, don’t be offended

How many times have we heard the phrase, “Go Back to Africa?” We’ve all heard it mostlyfrom a negative aspect. This is verbal evidence of someone’s racism coming to the surface. However, this is not what this article is about. One morning while having a cup of coffee and standing in my front yard I thought to myself, “Go back to Africa? Hmmmm, not a bad idea.” With Trump being in office, seeing the way that he attempts to deport 2/3rds of our Latino community back to Mexico, it made me entertain the thought of being deported to North Africa due to the fact of I am Hebrew African-American. That’s where my investigation started. The first thing I had to do was to look beyond the media propaganda of how they promote Africa as a poor country, with babies starving with no food. Upon my studies, I found out that Africa is
four times the size that it’s promoted! You could fit 14 Greenlands in the inside of Africa, and it has unlimited natural resources with mostly flat grasslands with little to no jungles, and a beautiful terrain that will leave you speechless. Once again, let’s think back and look at the history of not only the land itself, but the history of the people. It’s called Africa from the word Africanus (translates Motherland), in a more ancient term, it would’ve been called Alkebulan or Kush. Some of Africa’s more popular landmarks: the Garden of Eden is located there, the Holy land Israel is there and not to mention the mysterious lands of Egypt. The pyramids of Egypt are built in specific coordinates to serve as energy points. What’s more mysterious is that the Pyramids of Egypt are parallel to energy points of other pyramids found on Mars. Should February be African History month? The name sounds better already! Now let’s go into depth about the history of the people of Africa. We could go back to the time of Adam and Eve, but this is not the genesis of African history. Let’s start
with King David, the Bible gives direct scriptures stating that our Savior Yahushua Christ Jesus comes directly from the bloodline of King David (KJV Matthew 1:1-17). The Jews of the time of Yahushua Christ Jesus’ time were of a dark complexion, high in melanin Hebrew African. The Jewish culture of today is European converts under the code of Judaism. Revelation 2:9(KJV). So it’s safe to say that even the Messiah, our Savior, would be Hebrew Jew, but with African melanin and African features; face, hair and body profile etc. Biblical scriptures that support that the True Messiah is Black are: Matthew 1:1-17, Matthew 2:13-15, Revelation 1:14-15(KJV). As a matter of fact, Hollywood and mainstream knows that the Messiah is Black as well. Hollywood gives reference to this in movies such as; “Evan Almighty” and “Heaven Is For Real.” Some of our Hebrew African American actors such as Denzel Washington, Blair Underwood and East Texas’s own Forest Whitaker, are going more public with our African history. By Isaiah Robinson HOUSTON – To the ones who sit on the couch watching television almost every day, allowing time to go by, not taking advantage of the time you have to better yourself and your mind, you need to hear this public service announcement: It’s time to feed your brain! With the new decade just pulling into the driveway, there is no excuse to continue pursuing your career as a couch potato, and not furthering your education to help better yourself for your livelihood. Did you know, according to a study by Georgetown University, 24% of all jobs require a bachelor’s degree? And by 2020, 65% of the jobs in the country will require post-secondary education and training, which is up 28% from 1973. “Education is the key

And if college is not your forte, then go to school to get a trade. A skilled trade career offers the same benefits as a white-collar profession, but without the cost of a degree and half the time. With the baby boomer generation retiring,
there’s ample opportunity and strong job security for many African-American millennials and Generation Z young adults to earn positions in trade careers. With a trade skill, you have the necessary education and training, which opens up the doors to start your own business or apply for a highly specific job. 2020 is here; and, it’s time to start doing some self-reflection of your own about your education before the new year brings its own mirror of reflection on you. Family members said around 1 a.m., someone went to McHenry’s house and fired seven shots into her bedroom, but she was not hurt. Less than 22 hours later, police returned to the home after McHenry’s daughter and grandson found her dead around 10:30 p.m. At this time, police do not have a motive or suspect in the case. And in northwest Harris County, Texas nurse, Philippa Ashford, 61, was killed by what deputies believe was celebratory gunfire on New Year’s Eve, according to KHOU. Harris County Sheriff’s deputies say Ashford was with her family lighting fireworks in a cul-de-sac in the 12300 block of May Laurel Drive when she yelled out she’d been shot. She suffered a wound to the upper body area and died at the scene. Deputies searched the area for hours looking for shell casings but didn’t find any. Dollar The power of owning your business and having someone work for you, is a feeling of satisfaction and fulfillment; and, for a race who has worked and slaved for someone for centuries, it’s a feeling of generational respect too. As much as our people advocate to promote black-owned businesses, we equally push for our people to own a business for themselves as well. According to a report by Black Men in America, the government is the biggest employer of African Americans next to black businesses. Further, the same way we’ve depended on government-funded jobs to make ends meet, is the same dependence we must have in launching our own businesses to build generational wealth and hire our own people.
BELIEVE IN YOURSELF It’s fundamental to believe in your craft and your own ideas, because not everyone will support what you are doing. BUILD A GREAT TEAM Having a solid reliable team in place can help you provide inspiration and focus on the aspects of the business that require your attention while other details are being taken care of. BE TENACIOUS Even with having a good team and a solid foundation for your business, you are still going to have setbacks & roadblocks. See every failure as a challenge to greater success. SEEK OUT GOOD OUTSIDE ADVICE It’s important to be able to get advice from people or mentors who’ve walked in your shoes regarding company issues . BE FEARLESS Success rarely comes without taking risks, and it takes guts to believe in yourself and your idea. Like the late Nipsey Hussle said, “scared money never made a purchase.”
• Have an emergency fund - maintaining an emergency savings account may be the most crucial difference between those who stay afloat and those who sink financially. • Establish your budget - according to blackmeninamerica.com, a dollar circulates in the black community for only six hours. Establish your budget and realize where your money is going. • Save your money using short-term goals- committing to save $20 a week or a month is more reachable than setting a goal to save $200 a month for a year. • Commit to eating out once a month- reduce the amount you eat out by just once per month and you will really see a difference in your savings. • Start investing - Learn how to invest in stocks or buying bonds and not waste your money on things that depreciate in value.

How can you have any power, if you don’t own any property? As we embark on another year, we must focus on controlling more of what’s happening in our own communities, but how can you have any power, if you don’t own any property? Home ownership is more important than you think. Look at the recent headlines about homeowners in Third Ward filing a lawsuit against the Turkey Leg Hut, a restaurant they felt was creating a nuisance in their neighborhood. The lawsuit was later withdrawn, but the homeowners had the power to speak out, because they have invested in their lives, and have a right to be heard. Shad Bogany, broker associate at Better Homes and Gardens Gary Greene Realtors, has been in the real estate industry for 35 years, and he knows a thing or two

about the importance of homeownership for African-Americans. “The lack of home ownership among Blacks has a lot to do with the low net worth in some of our communities. Everything is built around wealth and because only 42 percent of us own homes, most of us reading this newspaper today are renters,” Bogany said. Home ownership isn’t just about having the freedom to paint the walls, change the floor tiles or plant a garden in your yard. It’s about taking pride in something that’s yours. You tend to take care of and protect something more when you’ve invested your time, energy and money into it. The barriers for home ownership are slowly being eliminated, but we have to start taking advantage of the things that are available to us, including

options for no money or 3 percent down. “The key to increasing home ownership in our community is understanding the first-time home buyer program, the requirements of the lender and the process of purchasing a home, and most importantly, and understanding that this is an investment that happens to be a place you live in,” Bogany said. Black knowledge is power and the Black dollar is mighty; but that dollar is only powerful when used tactfully and precisely. Financial stress is a strong cancer that almost everyone tries to rebuke out of their home, and for good reasons. But that stress will only continue to enter your threshold with poor financial decisions and bad spending habits; and, with the new year settling in, it’s about time to stop the mindless spending and start thinking wisely with your money. Moreover, the same tired, worn-out (yet true for some) stereotypes about Black people spending more money than we make, not supporting Black businesses, not saving our money, not knowing how to invest and not working toward getting out of poverty has to be put to rest in the new year. According to Black Men in America, 42 million African-Americans have a spending power of $1.1 trillion, and only 2% goes to black businesses. The spending habits we’ve been accustomed to for generations must be put to an end, but how do we do that? It’s simple, start saving so you can invest!

The ordained minister, who is also a volunteer for the Acres Home Chamber of Commerce and several churches, teared up as he spoke about his dreams. “My dream is to bring glory to God, to the community I come from and to myself. God has been good to me,” he said. Brown also acknowledges that none of this could be possible without the support of his loving wife of 45 years, his two children and two grandchildren. He then went on to issue a challenge. “If Matthew McConaughey can sit in a Lincoln and sell one, I can too. If Samuel L. Jackson can sell a Master Card, I can too. The only thing they have over me is name recognition and they really don’t have that, because my name is Charlie Brown.”

Fort Worth family fights to keep 11-month-old alive after judge rules to remove child from life support By Isaiah Robinson FORT WORTH, Texas – A Texas judge has ruled that a children’s hospital can remove an 11-month-old girl with a rare heart defect from life support. The family of Tinslee Lewis is continuing to fight for her to remain in treatment at Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas. According to CNN, Tinslee was born prematurely at the hospital, where she has spent her entire life. Since birth, she has been plagued with medical problems and has undergone three
open-heart surgeries. The infant has been treated for a severe heart defect called Ebstein’s anomaly, hypertension, lung disease and high blood pressure. She was placed on life support in July. The hospital began talks in September with the Lewis family about transferring her to another hospital or ending care. Staff argued that the baby is in pain and that “further medical intervention is not in Tinslee’s best interest.” Texas Fourth District Court of Appeals Chief Justice Judge Sandee B. Marion issued a ruling Thursday to deny the request for
an injunction filed by the family, which would have prevented the hospital from removing Tinslee from life support. Joe Nixon, the lawyer on behalf of the Lewis family, filed an amended notice of appeal with the trial court shortly after the announcement of the judge’s ruling. The family is fighting to keep her alive. Texas Right to Life, an anti-abortion group, said it was disappointed in the ruling, stating it, “not only disregarded the Constitution, but also sentenced an innocent 11-month-old baby to death like a criminal.” The hospital released

We ask that outside groups, even those who disagree with Cook Children’s approach,
consider what is best for Tinslee now and give the family space to consider what truly is best for this baby, and allow our medical professionals space to care for her.” The issue also drew the attention of elected officials.

Houston’s “Fit4Lyfe” trainer gives tips on healthy living in the new year

Preston HOUSTON – As we make a laundry list of all the things we vow to change about ourselves this new year and pray for the Sweet, Black Baby Jesus to please help us lose enough weight to squeeze back into our favorite jeans, we must realize that the power is in our hands to either make positive changes or keep doing the same old undisciplined things which have lead us to where we are today. But all jokes and vanity aside, when it comes to health and fitness, African-Americans need to get real – real fast – and take control of our futures. We are at war with ourselves. According to the most recent study shown on U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services Office of Minority Health, African-Americans were 1.4 times as likely to be obese as non-Hispanic whites. Getting back on the right track is easier said than done and Jennifer Winters, personal trainer and owner of Fit4Lyfe Gym at 9892 Southwest Freeway, is here to help. “What I’ve learned to understand is food is getting worse and technology is getting better, and those two things combined are killing us,” Winters said. “Food is no longer the healthy vegetables grown in your grandmother’s garden, there are pesticides and things injected into food these days that contribute to our heart disease, asthma, high cholesterol and everything else we are battling. And technology is so great these days, it’s
making us lazy. No one has to get up to do anything. You can clap your hands and turn off your lights, your voice can activate your television and other household items.” Winters says her job is to educate people so they can understand how to live healthy for the rest of their lives. The first key is to do your research. “We don’t read, we follow. You can’t believe everything you see on TV and must realize that everything does not work well for you,” she explained. “Keto is great, but it doesn’t work for people with high cholesterol or who are diabetic. You can’t eat all those carbs. Just because Jen is doing it, doesn’t mean Jane can do it too.” And until you get moving, start by doing small exercises immediately in the morning to wake up your body daily.

When Mikaila Ulmer was just four years old, she was stung by two bees in the same week. Her parents encouraged her to do some research on the bees rather than being upset with them.
