The Queen of Soul

A

retha Franklin is one of the artists that many people know when they just hear her name. She was born in 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee to Reverend Clarence La Vaughan (C.L. Franklin) and Barbara Siggers Franklin who was a singer. Aretha started signing at New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit, where her father was the Pastor. She was known for singing many gospel hymns and even hit the road with her father to perform at different churches.

Aretha’s father gained much success as a Pastor and was recognized nationally. At the age of 14, she released her first album titled, Songs of Faith, which included some of the songs she sung at church. At the age of 18, Aretha decided to follow the career of Sam Cooke in order to pursue music outside of gospel.

Aretha Franklin was signed to Columbia Records in 1960.

Under Columbia Records, she produced many albums and singles. It was also during the 1960’s where Aretha received the title, “The Queen of Soul” from a radio personality when she sung at the Regal Theater.

Six years later, Aretha signed to Atlantic Records. Under Atlantic Records, she produced many hit songs such as: Baby I Love You, You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman, I Say A Little Prayer and even the reauthoring of Otis Redding’s Respect, which became her signature song.

When Aretha left Atlantic Records, she signed with Arista Records and went on to produce more hits. The Civil Rights

Movement was a time for social justice, which occurred during the 50’s and 60’s.

The purpose of the movement was to grant equality for Blacks and to try to remove racism and violence against the Black race.

Aretha Franklin became a key symbol during the Civil Rights Movement and is known for her contributions to the movement.

Her popular hits, Respect and Natural Woman became anthems for change during this time of injustice. Aretha’s father was also a close friend to the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and she received the honor of performing at his funeral in 1968 singing, Precious Lord. Later on that year, she performed at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

Amongst her success, Aretha Franklin has had the opportunity to perform in front of many high-class individuals such as, Queen Elizabeth at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1980.

She also sung The Star Spangled Banner at Super Bowl XL in February 2006 in Detroit, and received the opportunity to perform My Country, Tis of Thee at the inaugural ceremony for President Barack Obama.

In addition, Aretha gave an outstanding performance of You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman in December 2015 at the Kennedy Center Honors for Carole King, who was not only honored that night but also co-wrote the song. During this performance, Aretha received a standing ovation for her beautiful voice. She is a legend who will never be forgotten and one whose style can never be duplicated. Although the world has lost a special gem, she will continue to live on through her music. The beautiful part about her music is that it’s timeless. Royalty

ormality has never particularly been “necessary” to me.

But, I understand the validity and impact of it when it addresses certain matters like royalty.

As a matter of fact, royalty is the very essence of formality.

Although names reflect different cultures throughout history: King, Queen, Czar, Emperor, Prime Minister, President, they all equate to the same sense of elegance. Such a regal title is imbued with power and only bestowed on the crème de la crème.

Without a doubt, Aretha Franklin is deserving of such a nobility for she is a total reflection of the word. Aretha Franklin was one of the all-time, greatest artists to grace the earth.

She dazzled audiences around the world with her poise and natural musical talent that inspired waves of artist to this day. But, it wasn’t her musically prowls that defined her legacy; but instead, her ability to resonate herself through every avenue of her character. You always knew that THIS was Aretha Franklin.

Too many times we find ourselves code-switching into submission until we inadvertently lose ourselves amongst the many conversations we’re forced to have. But here we have an actress, singer, philanthropes and both civil rights and social activist that remained true to herself and a reflection of what it means to have an identity within a society that wants to erase us. With a resume like hers’, it would seem impossible for us

to go about our everyday lives and not do the same. Authenticity resonated from her spirit and everyone who came in contact with her knew it.

She understood what being Black and being a woman meant in American at the time.

But, nothing held her back from claiming her destiny and wearing her crown.

Being Black is so much more than a pigmentation, or a dialect, it’s a demeanor. Being Black is caring the weight your ancestors endured and inheriting generations of strength of perseverance.

We are undeniable kings and queens that walk amongst the common folk as they try to deny us our royalty. But like Ms. Franklin we must always walk with our heads held high so that all can see the manifestation of our crowns on our heads and know we are special. But, it goes beyond a confidence but without having the ability to give back, you are no better.

“Being the Queen is not all about singing, and being a diva is not all about singing. It has much to do with your service to people. And your social contributions to your community and your civic contributions as well,” Ms. Franklin once said as she reminds us that royalty is nothing if you cannot build your kingdom up to the same standard.

So, although our Queen has gone home, let her teachings, personality and presence inspire you to “Regality” and champion your own kingdom; as so many of your ancestries did before you. Drape your Black skin in all the finest jewelry and exotic fabrics a queen deserves, only inquire the finest delicacies king, and walk around as if you own the place because you just might one day.

he is both a 20th and 21st century musical and cultural icon known the world over simply by her first name: Aretha. The reigning and undisputed “Queen Of Soul” has created an amazing legacy that spans an incredible six decades, from her first recording as a teenage gospel star, to her most recent RCA Records release, ARETHA FRANKLIN SINGS THE GREAT DIVA CLASSICS. Her many countless classics include “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” “Chain Of Fools,” “I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You)”; her own compositions “Think,” “Daydreaming” and “Call Me”; her definitive versions of “Respect” and “I Say A Little Prayer”; and global hits like “Freeway Of Love,” “Jump To It,” “I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me),” her worldwide chart-topping duet with George Michael, and “A Rose Is Still A Rose.”

“Mr. Davis came to me with the idea,” says Aretha. “He suggested some of the artists and songs which included many that I myself enjoyed. We both agreed that there was a whole new generation who may never have heard the original recordings.”

Noting that she is “absolutely thrilled with the whole CD and very happy with the work I put into it,” Aretha shares her thoughts on the ten tracks that comprise her remarkable 45th album (excluding compilations): “AT LAST” (Etta James, 1961) “I met Etta briefly but I didn’t know her that well but I remember this song from when I was coming up – it’s one of the great soul tunes of our generation with such a memorable melody.”

“ROLLING IN THE DEEP” (Adele, 2010): “I think Adele is a very fine writer, she’s a heavy writer. I love the way she says things in a different way. I had to really ponder doing this song: I listened to its lyrics and I thought, ‘Adele doesn’t take any mess, straight up!’ We came up with putting in that section from “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” – which is a fabulous Ashford & Simpson song. I’ve always loved the refrain that Diana Ross did on it.”

As he wrapped up on his remarks, he mentioned the fact that he had previously misspelled the word “Respect”. He said, “You know the other Sunday on my show, I misspelled ‘respect,’ and a lot of y’all corrected me. Now I want y’all to help me correct President Trump to teach him what it means.” He continued, “And I say that because when word went out that Ms. Franklin passed, Trump said, ‘she used to work for me.’” As anyone listening could tell, Sharpton was personally offended by the in-

cency to respect us as human beings. So many people will never understand why we Africans living in America held the “Queen of Soul” to such a high standard.

In my day, we were inspired through our artists who provided messages of empowerments and inspiration within the lyrics of their songs.

After watching the funeral of Aretha Franklin, there were many things that resonated with me – some good, other things not so much. But out of all

ferences Trump made in regards to the “Queen of Soul”, just like many others were. He proceeded to shout, “No, she used to perform for you. She worked for us.

Aretha never took orders from nobody but God.” It may be a simple gesture, but I appreciate him for standing up and telling the truth. I believe in doing so, it was one of the greatest forms of respect that could have been given to protect the legacy of our dearly departed Queen.
