6 YEAR OLD GENIUS Student Minister Dr. Abdul Haleem Muhammad delivering opening remarks

SURVIVING WHEN THE GRID GOES DOWN By: Abdul Qiyam Muhammad

“ Our inspiration to host this workshop is rooted in a four letter word: Love. It is the love of The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan seeking to protect us from hurt or harm by consistently warning us to watch the weather,” said Student Minister Dr. Abdul Haleem Muhammad. Mr. Muhammad serves as the Southwest Regional Minister of The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan and The Nation of Islam. He delivered the introductory words for the October 17th disaster preparedness and family readiness workshop, hosted at Muhammad Mosque No. 45 located at 4443 Old Spanish Trail. “The pattern of God is always the same. It is that He fights with the forces of nature; rain, hail, snow, earthquake as The Most Honorable Elijah

Muhammad taught us. Whether you subscribe to our spiritual view of current events or not, this is one thing you cannot ignore: We’re experiencing unusual weather,” he said. The city of Houston has experienced costly disasters in the last several years and the entire country is getting hit even harder. According to summer news reports, the Federal Emergency Management Agency is facing turbulent times with staffing losses, leadership vacancies, and questions of whether the agency would even be able to effectively respond during the hurricane season. So instead of waiting for FEMA, the workshop organizers and trainers took an Surviving initiative-taking approach in providing practical information and hands-on on pg. 3

Chandler Hughes, a Houston-area student, gained national recognition for his remarkable intellectual abilities and passion for reading at an early age. At just six years old, he joined Mensa, an international organization for individuals who score in the top 2% on approved intelligence tests. The rapid academic ascent of Chandler Hughes offers a compelling blueprint for the nurturing of exceptional human potential. Achieving admission into Mensa at just six years old after scoring in the 98th percentile on standardized intelligence tests, Hughes represents a rare tier of cognitive development. Yet, his trajectory is less an anomaly of nature and more a testament to the compounding effects of early, intentional educational intervention. The foundational metrics of his development are undeniably striking. Hughes was reading fluently at twenty-one months, bypassing traditional early literacy milestones. By the conclusion of pre-kindergarten, comprehensive assessments placed his reading and mathematical comprehension at a second-grade level, Genius on prompting an immediate advancement pg. 4

The Bible teaches that those who follow God’s law are blessed: “The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sent His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit” (Romans 8:2–4). President Trump and his MAGA followers should remember that those who break the law do not find true happiness. Material possessions cannot provide lasting peace, because genuine joy comes from spiritual fulfillment, not outward things. People ruled by a carnal, sinful mind are never fully satisfied. Can President Trump and his cabinet truly be content when more than sixty percent of Americans oppose their policy actions? The more they gain, the more they want. A destructive spirit is shaping America and the world, and lawbreakers are driven by a devilish, hellish, and carnal mindset. This helps explain why the Trump administration is creating turmoil in America and throughout the global community. The war with Iran is one clear example. As Proverbs 27:20 states, “Hell and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never

satisfied.” America, peace of mind comes from inner spiritual fulfillment, not material possessions. The more people acquire, the more they desire. This is why America is facing a profound spiritual crisis in presidential leadership. When someone serves as President, people expect that person to fix problems, not create more of them. Yet, those who are spiritually broken cannot repair what is materially broken until they themselves are healed. This is why King David, a man after God’s own heart, prayed after his sins: “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10). Will someone please tell President Trump and his MAGA–White Privilege cult that confession is good for the soul? Human beings are born into sin and shaped by iniquity. Sin is lawlessness. As a result, our natural tendency is toward selfishness and self-centeredness—seeking to please ourselves rather than God. King David, a man after God’s own heart, followed this sinful impulse when he desired Bathsheba, another man’s wife, and arranged for her husband to be killed to conceal his sin. Only the Truth (Holy Spirit) can free us from sin. This is why the Bible emphatically admonishes us that: “Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.” (1 John 3: 4). In fact, there are at least 100 Bible verses concerning law-breaking. Hence, individuals who make a habit of sinning also practice lawlessness. Of course, sin is an internal mindset. Therefore, will someone please inform President Law on Trump, and his MAGA-GOP Cult pg. 7

What Black People Need to Know Unapologetically Jolanda Jones

BLACK GIRL MAGIC MADE HISTORY. NOW THAT HISTORY IS UNDER ATTACK Black people are under attack. Black representation is under attack. In Harris County, Black women judges are under attack. In 2018, seventeen Black women won judicial elections in Harris County, making history around the world. We called it Black Girl Magic. Then the Legislature changed the rules, increasing experience requirements for judges and changing the State Commission on Judicial Conduct. I opposed those changes. The Black Girl Magic judges still met the new qualifications. So why the sudden urgency after Black women won? I’ve practiced law since 1995, when almost every Harris County judge was white. I’ve practiced before that judiciary and today’s more diverse bench. I’ve seen Black defendants treated more harshly than white defendants by prosecutors and judges. Judges who understand people’s backgrounds can recognize bias others overlook. Trust me. We do not want to go back. White judges still outnumber Black judges. Why complain about too many Black judges when nobody complained about nearly all-white benches? This

backlash is racist. In 2024, Black women judicial candidates fought unsuccessful efforts to remove them from the ballot. Erica Hughes and TaKasha Francis survived challenges and won. In 2026, three Black women judicial candidates were removed from the ballot, while white counterparts faced unchallenged primaries. These fights involved previous Harris County Democratic Party leadership. The court decisions against these women reflect racial bias. The double standard in how Black judges are treated is glaring. Judge Kelli Johnson, a white Democrat, was arrested for DWI. She was also reportedly absent from her bench from May until the following April. Judge Susan Brown, a Republican, helped cover her courtroom and arrange visiting judges. Former staff have alleged Johnson called a Black male judge “boy,” threatened to sic her dog on him, sought that judge’s voting proxy without permission, and threw county equipment at Harris County staff. I know of no public commission sanction arising from those allegations. Johnson isn’t the only example. Judges Frank Aguilar, a Democrat, Lisa Millard, a Republican, and Linda Motheral, a Republican, were also reportedly absent for significant periods. Why did these absences not result in comparable public disciplinary consequences? In 2017, Judge Nikita Harmon, Read more at an elected Black aframnews.com

EDUCATION R. SHIRLEY ROSE-GILLIAM ELECTED TO THREE-YEAR TERM ON TASB BOARD OF DIRECTORS By: SH-FBISD News

Dr. Shirley Rose-Gilliam, secretary of the Fort Bend Independent School District (FBISD) Board of Trustees, has been elected to a threeyear term on the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) Board of Directors. Her election provides an opportunity to bring decades of educational experience and school district leadership to a statewide organization serving public education in Texas. Rose-Gilliam was elected during TASB’s 2026 Delegate Assembly on Oct. 9 in Houston. She will represent Region 4, Position G, on the association’s board. She joined the FBISD Board of Trustees in November 2020 and was reelected to represent Position 4 in 2023. A longtime educator, RoseGilliam brings approximately 30 years of professional experience, including 25 years serving Fort Bend ISD. Throughout her career, she worked at several district campuses, including Willowridge, Kempner, Elkins, Bush and Marshall high schools, as well as McAuliffe Middle School. Her experience in the classroom and school administration has given her insight into the challenges facing students, teachers, principals and families. Her accomplishments include being named FBISD

Secondary Principal of the Year while leading Bush High School. She was also a finalist for FBISD Secondary Teacher of the Year. Her educational leadership has focused on mentoring educators, strengthening school communities and helping campuses improve their learning environments. Rose-Gilliam retired from FBISD in 2012 but continued working in education as a consultant to school districts throughout the greater Houston area. In that role, she supports educators and school leaders through professional learning, coaching and collaboration. She has emphasized the importance of developing teachers and administrators who can respond effectively to the needs of students and their communities. Her commitment to education is also personal. Rose-Gilliam has lived in Fort Bend County since 1986, and both of her children graduated from FBISD schools. She and her husband, Kevin, reside in

Missouri City. She has spoken about how overcoming difficult circumstances during her childhood helped shape her desire to make a difference in the lives of young people. Rose-Gilliam holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Houston, a Master of Education from the University of Houston-Victoria and a doctorate in educational leadership from Texas A&M University. She is also a member of Fort Bend Church and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. TASB supports school boards across Texas through training, policy guidance, advocacy and educational resources. In her new position, Rose-Gilliam will have an opportunity to contribute her experience to discussions affecting school governance and public education statewide. Her guiding motto, “Believe in the Possibilities!” reflects a career centered on helping students and educators reach their potential. AA

fluid, working-memory recall of complex multiplication tables, a skill set typically cultivated years later in standard curricula. However, the more critical editorial narrative lies in the structural framework supporting his gift. Rather than isolating Hughes in a purely clinical academic environment, his family and educators at The Imani School have engineered a dual-track paradigm. By engaging with advanced coursework alongside older peers while maintaining vital social integration within his own age bracket, Hughes is insulated from the emotional burnout that historically plagues accelerated youth. Furthermore, his stated ambition to leverage this intellectual capacity to enter the medical field underscores a burgeoning sense of civic purpose. In an era where educational systems frequently struggle to differentiate instruction for outlier students, the deliberate balance struck in Hughes’s upbringing provides a vital case study. It demonstrates that maximizing a child’s intellectual ceiling does not require the sacrifice of their emotional and social well-being.

NIGERIANS IN THE DRONES: VOTING TODAY TO PROTECT TOMORROW By: Tj Baker | Literature Elegist Early Voting Lines are been told a different story before single ballots are cast. Nigerian Americans stood proudly in colorful traditional attire, while a Black American man in a Nike cap, a conservatively dressed Black woman, a white voter, and an Asian American voter stood among their fellow citizens. Different styles. Different stories. One line. One country. One right that matters... The Right To Vote! And that’s where, I met a young Nigerian

American woman, sharing her perspective on political participation, immigration concerns, and the importance of making her voice heard. Her message was personal, pointed, and timely. For years, she explained, some people did not believe immigration threats would reach their own families. But when relatives and people they knew began experiencing the ISIS consequences of changing policies, the political conversation became more immediate.

What once seemed distant was suddenly knocking at the family door. And that is where this story begins. From “Maybe Not” to “We’re Here” The question I brought to the voting line was straightforward: Are Nigerian Americans who have become U.S. citizens participating more actively in elections, and what might be motivating them? One interview cannot establish a national voting trend. That requires reliable turnout data. But

one person’s experience can illuminate a question worth investigating: What happens when political decisions begin affecting the people you love? Immigration, visa restrictions, family separation, and debates over birthright citizenship have placed constitutional questions in the public spotlight. The woman I interviewed expressed concern about the consequences for families and emphasized Read more at the aframnews.com
