Trump: America’s Nightmare

T

he violent deadly divisive evil behavior we have shockingly witnessed since Donald Trump has been President, is the reason our nation is living an “American Nightmare” created by this hate inspired President.

I have heard one reliable national television media source state publicly that 44 journalists have been killed across the world in 2018. With the recent killing of an American writer Jamal Khashoggi by Saudi Arabia killers, it is clear to everyone, with common sense, that Khashoggi was killed because his death was ordered by the leadership of the Saudi Arabian government.

Khashoggi’s death was due to writing assignments.

Khashoggi, who was born in Saudi Arabia and moved to America, was a writer for the Washington Post Newspaper and had written some very critical comments about the Saudi Arabian leadership in the Washington Post.

Sadly, Trump has been considered a hero by the Saudi Arabian Leadership because of the stand or lack of stand he has taken in the investigation of this death. Trump has never condemned Saudi Arabia Leadership for anything including the 9-11 tragedy in New York City.

I truly believe Trump’s negative attacks on media outlets and people he doesn’t like are the inspiration behind all of these attacks and murders we are seeing these days. The nation of Turkey told the world about the Saudi

Arabia murder, it’s obvious that neither Trump nor Saudi Arabia would have said anything if they had not been exposed.

The eleven victims that were killed in the recent Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Synagogue shooting by a racist Trump Supporter, the Journalists who were killed in America earlier this year at their newspaper’s office, the 12 bombs that were recently sent to former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton homes’ and the homes of the ten other high-profile Americans who opposed and even the CNN News media that received mailed bombs can directly be attributed to Trump’s reckless hate-driven speeches and his endless divisive rhetoric which

Trump, in “a rare moment of truth” said in late last month that he was a “Nationalist” to the American public. The last time I checked the term Nationalist, is used by White Supremacist racist Groups to describe their political and world position. The school shootings

which have devastated our nation, gun violence that has killed people in America and other acts of domestic terrorism since Trump became president, have been created by Trump and it is well noted by true Americans, that everyone who presents themselves as racist and commits crimes against people who oppose Trump are held in high regard by White Nationalists and other “sick haters”.

If you have any doubts about what I am saying about Trump, then you should do your own research. Start by going to one of his political rallies or view one of his past rallies via the internet. You can clearly see racist Neo Nazi, KKK, White Supremacist groups all over the place with signs and clothes with racist agendas proudly displayed.

I’ve seen some of Trump’s “Fake Rallies” and I’ve seen a few Black people at some of these racist events. Although, the Black people appear to be happy at those rallies, as an African-American I can see that they really are scared. I know when the rally is over, they have to watch “their backs” because they are surrounded by some dangerous, mentally unstable people who “will” hurt or kill them!

Remember, you can’t please the devil, all you can do is do what he tells you to do and hope it makes him happy. Trump has divided America by bragging on racists and people like the political candidate who body slammed a news reporter.

All of those horrible comments we have heard from our POTUS have seriously damaged and separated our American citizens. Until we impeach or vote this sick dysfunctional, mentally unstable racist man out of the White House, this “American Nightmare” will continue! So, GET OUT AND VOTE! God Bless America! - AANI

How Valuable is Life? - Is there any peace in our communities?

A drug deal gone bad, a drive by shooting, a deadly car crash, a kid left in a hot vehicle, a drowning, an accidental shooting, you name it. Our communities experience the above-mentioned crimes on a bi-weekly basis.

James Brown wrote “I’m Black and I’m Proud-say it loud.” Rev. Jesse Jackson said, “I am somebody” and “Keep Hope Alive.” Roberta Flack wrote “Where is the Love?” I am echoing all the above but also ask is there any peace for our Negro/Black/African-American neighborhoods?

A wise gentleman once said to me “Son, don’t give the other races what they want. Don’t kill, steal, hurt one another, instead love, help, support, and cherish each other.” If the youth of today would research what we went through back in the day, maybe our kids would have a deeper appreciation for who we are.

We’ve come this far only by faith. Many lives were lost, blood was shed, land and rights taken away. Our children need to know our life wasn’t always cell phones, pc’s and smart phones.

Some of today’s most brilliant Black scholars became famous without modern technology.

So, I challenge every leader. to not only rally and protest when there is racial profiling, injustices or biases, but, stand up and “toot the horn” when there is Black on Black crime, violence or disturbances. A former Texas Governor said, “A bitten dog will always holler.” I say to all of us-holler my brothers and sisters for justice, equality, fairness and peace for our own people. The church, government, schools and people must stand on one accord in order for this craziness to cease.

If I Was A Black Man In America

I

saw on the news where a Black man was simply trying to get to his place of residence and a White lady blocked his path, because she didn’t believe he lived there.

It’s crazy because sometimes I think we are making progress as a nation, and other times, I think we are reverting back to our old ways. When Harvey occurred last year, it was so refreshing to see people of all shades helping each other.

The circumstance of the storm truly showed as a nation, we can come together regardless of race, status, political affiliation, sexual orientation, etc. Then, something like this occurs and I begin to question everything.

Being Black in America is one thing, but being a Black man in America is something different.

Our Black men go through a lot and have to face many challenges on a day-to-day basis just because they were born Black in America. Some of these obstacles include racism, stereotypes, mental illness, the prison system, police officers, Black on Black crimes, unemployment, absentee fathers, lack of education and stigmas that were derived from the Black communities, just to name a few. If you talk to a Black man, they have most likely experienced one of the things listed if not more.

Many people, not all, only see our Black men as a statistic, thug, or even a monster and nothing more. They look down on them and make assumptions and judge them due to precon-

ceived notions.

Much of the negativity against our Black men are also due to stereotypes and judgments that have been passed down from generations to generations.

Many of them are much more than what they have been labeled and should be treated as such. They deserve more.

If I was a Black man in America, I would do everything in my power to not become the stereotypes that have been placed against me.

If I was a Black man in America, I would use my silence as power when people try to undermine my capabilities and who I am as a person.

If I was a Black man in America, I would educate myself as much as possible so that when someone questions my intellect, I can respond with great knowledge.

If I was a Black man in America, I wouldn’t let my pride get in the way of asking for help when I need it.

If I was a Black man in America, I would not let the stigmas from my own race serve as an obstacle from achieving success.

If I was a Black man in America, I would take in and mentor our young men so they too can rise above what was meant to hold them down.

If I was a Black man in America, I would love myself and know that no matter how America may view me, it’s how I view myself that will always matter the most.

Be that as it may, I am a strong Black woman - the way God made me and since I am not a man, I just want to encourage my fellow brothers to keep your heads up as you try to survive in the “Land of the Free”, and know that you can make a difference in America whether the odds or stacked against you or not. You can be the exception to - AANI the rule.

Same Struggle, Different Race

H

onestly this is not going to change unless the people who want to prevent these kinds of mass shootings from taking place feel at least as passionate, at least as mobilized and well-funded as the NRA and the gun manufacturers are because the politics in Congress are such where even members of Congress who know better are fearful if they vote their conscience and support common sense measures like background checks, they’re worried they’re going to lose.”

These words were stated by former President Barack Obama during his administration in response to senseless mass shootings.

On the contrary, the one who occupies the current seat of presidency has a completely different viewpoin, which I will also delve into. Nevertheless, as I sat and thought of the most recent tragedy that has occurred within the Jewish community, one thing came to mind - the correlation between Jews and Blacks. It is hard for someone to completely understand where I’m coming from with this, if you are not current on historical facts relative to both races.

But, I believe Letty Cottin Pogrebin understood where I am coming from as she notated in her memoir, Deborah, Golda, and Me. She referenced the similar background that exists in regards to slavery and bondage amongst both races.

She wrote, “Both blacks and Jews have known Egypt, Jews have known it as certain death

(the killing of the firstborn, then the ovens and gas chambers). Blacks have known it as death and terror by bondage.”

Although the Jews experienced bondage several times according to Biblical teachings, not much has changed in modern American culture.

There are many other similaries between Jews and Blacks, however, I have other points to make and cannot elaborate on every one of them.

But, despite, the many parallels which exists between the two, there is a distinct difference. That is, Jews like various other races and ethnicities, have always stuck together. Even in the face of adversity, they lean towards one another and on an everyday basis they keep their communties fortified through the support of each other.

There is no need for them to solicit help from people who do not look like them because they are self-sufficient people - a value that many of us have gotten away from.

So, how does, “Same Struggle, Different Race” apply here?

Well, here we are in 2018, with a president who has the same heart of stone towards these members as he does with members from the African-American community.

The thoughtless, cruel and downright unreasonable response in regards to the mass shooting that took place in Pittsburgh is very similiar to the reaction we Africans living in America have come to expect as it relates to offering empathetic words to us during times of tragedy.

But first, for those who are unaware or not completely familiar with the incident I am referring to, allow me to bring you up to speed. Over a week ago, 46-year-old Robert Bowers, who happens to be a White man went on a killing spree at

the Tree of Life Synagogue in Squirrel Hill, a Jewish neighborhood in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Consequently, 11 innocent worshippers lost their lives at the hands of this crazed assasin.

In addition to, six others were wounded with the majority of that total belonging to law enforcement agents. According to reports, Bowers made “anti-Semitic statements during the shooting and targeted Jews on social media.”

For the record, “anti-Semitic” is hostility toward or discrimination against Jews as a religious, ethnic, or racial group.

Authorities have charged the hate-filled gunman with:11 counts of using a firearm to commit murder and multiple counts of two hate crimes: obstruction of the exercise of religious beliefs resulting in death and obstruction of the exercise of religious beliefs resulting in bodily injury to a public safety officer. And what did the Donald Trump have to offer as words of condolences?

He said, “This wicked act of mass murder is pure evil.” He continued, “hard to believe and, frankly, something that is unimaginable.”

In a separate conversation he stated, “The world’s problems go back for years and years. You could say, frankly, for many centuries. But, perhaps the violence could be helped: If there were an armed guard inside the temple, they would have been able to stop them. Maybe there would have been nobody killed except for him, frankly.”

This is the best he could come up with to console a hurting people during a time of unexpected and unwarranted grief - tragic.

I honestly believe that his own words are enough to rest my case on...

They were known as the “God Father” and “God Mother of Cocaine”. But, now a days we have a new drug, it’s called CHILDREN and the playground is the EDUCATION SYSTEM. The driving force behind this industry is the root of all evil, MONEY! First, allow me to introduce, “La Familia” to you - it’s the Education Mafia in the city of Houston. All the people in this article are Latino except one.

He is a White guy. But I’ll get to that later.

It took me a while to connect the dots but, I finally figured out the “key players”. I assumed that one HISD School Board trustee was the mastermind behind the failed coup of the Interim Superintendent last month.

However, I have realized since, I gave her too much credit. It had to be someone else driving the run-a-way car. I went back and researched for weeks.

I looked at social media, read articles and attended several community events. Then it hit me. The same people kept showing up.

The message was the same, “Latinos were not getting a fair shake in HISD.” Those people I kept seeing were Anne Sung, Holly Marie Villesecca, Elizabeth Santos, Diana Davila and Sergio Lira. You remember them. They are the Education Klan.

Even the KKK has someone behind them pulling strings. As I began to take a closer look, Victor Trevino II and III, Zeph Capo (Houston Federation of Teachers), Sylvia Trevino,

Carol Alvarado and Councilman Robert Gallegos, comes to my focus.

Yet, I still didn’t believe they were smart enough or had the resources to master mind this Education Mafia. The it hit me like a ton of bricks. The God Mother is State Senator Sylvia Garcia. Now it made sense. Almost every major decision in the last five years that has affected the City of Houston involved at leasts one of these people.

The Fire Chief selection, police Chief selection and lastly, The School System Superintendent.

They all were major players in all those processes and selections. But, it was the school system where they truly exposed themselves to me. Now, let me give you a little rundown of La Familia: Anne Sung, Holly Marie Villesecca, Elizabeth Santos, Diana Davila and Sergio Lira, who I refer to as the Education Klan. The under-bosses: Victor Trevino II and III, Zeph Capo, Sylvia Trevino, Carol Alvarado and Councilman Robert Gallegos. The God Mother is State Senator Sylvia Garcia. The question then becomes, should we trust the judgment of people with a checkered past?

Victor Trevino

Former Precinct 6 constable, Victor Trevino was convicted of a felony related to using charity money for gambling. Victor was convicted of felony misapplication of fiduciary duty in November 2014. After a lengthy Harris County District Attorney’s Office investigation, prosecutors and fraud investigators accused Victor of siphoning money he had raised for his own charity — Constable’s Athletic Recreational and Education Events

Inc. (CARE), which helped kids and elderly people in the East End — to go gambling at Louisiana casinos. Though he never admitted to any wrongdoing, ironically Victor plead guilty, escaped jail time and was placed on probation for ten years.

Sylvia Trevino

Sylvia Trevino was fired from Precinct 7 for insubordination.

Records from the DA’s criminal investigation into Victor Trevino shows Sylvia accompanied him on these gambling trips and was quite the gambler herself. At the time, she still would have been a lieutenant at Precinct 6.

According to Investigative Reporter Wayne Dolcefino, the records reflect the person with the true gambling habit is Sylvia... Cops, on cops’ salaries, cannot afford to be spending $10,000 to $15,000 at casinos — unless they’re using somebody else’s money.

According to the gambling records, the Trevinos’ weekend getaways to the Lake Charles, Louisiana casinos date back to at least 2005. In Victor’s criminal investigation, prosecutors focused on the period between 2008 and 2011 and said she and Victor cashed $124,000 worth of CARE charity checks into their personal bank accounts during that time period.

Fraud investigators found that the Trevinos would show up at the Lake Charles casino and start hitting the slots just hours after cashing these CARE checks in Houston. Sylvia, however, never faced any criminal charges. In May 2013, Trevino sent a department-wide email defaming various Precinct 7 personnel, “falsely alleging misconduct, all for the purpose of seeking influence and/or intervention for your personal ad-

vantage,” Mae Walker wrote.

Walker pointed out, if Trevino had witnessed this alleged yearold misconduct among her colleagues, then it would have been her job as a lieutenant to report it to superiors, not blast it out in an unprofessional mass email more than a year later.

Texas State Representative Carol Alvarado

The State Rep. has been accused of using her influence to evict homeless people from underpasses. Back in July, according to the Houston Chronicle Texas House Rep. Carol Alvarado said she, Councilman Robert Gallegos and TxDOT were “cleaning up several underpasses along the Gulf Freeway to make sure the streets were clean & clutter-free.”

Basically homeless people were kicked out of their card board houses and their belongings were thrown away. I wonder how many HISD children lost their belongings? Also, in 2006 a payroll-padding scandal cost Carol Alvarado her job as mayor pro tem. Alvarado has strongly denied any role in the $143,000 in bonuses taken by the employees in the Office of Mayor Pro Tem, who worked separately from those in her District I office. She has said someone forged her signature and schemed to hide the bonuses.

City Councilman Robert Gallegos

City Councilman Robert Gallegos – According to ABC 13, Candidate for Houston City Council Herlinda Garcia claims incumbent District I Councilman Robert Gallegos physically assaulted her while she was campaigning. The alleged incident is reported to have

happened outside the Houston Community College polling station on the 6800 block of Rustic Street, on the city’s south side on Monday evening. Garcia claims she and Gallegos were both outside the polling station on Monday around 7pm talking to voters. She claims Gallegos approached her and insulted her, although she would not specify what he said.

“He came back behind me and hit me on my back, and pushed me so hard that for about an hour I felt something on my left side,” Garcia said during a press conference Wednesday. What does the women movement, ME 2 have to say about this?

Zeph Capo

Zeph Capo – President of The Houston Federation of Teachers and a HCC Board member is a joke to. When HISD face closing or chartering 10 local schools due to HB1842 Houston Federation of Teachers chief, Zeph Capo, suggested that an Energized For STEM Academy school chief is profiting from rented buildings paid for by tax dollars.“This type of set up? It’s nothing but a real estate scam,” Capo said.

“This is nothing but a real estate venture. You’re using kids and their families as the dollar figure that you get from the state and the district to pay the loan on properties that you could potentially put in your pocket.”

What he forgot to say is allegedly he wanted to sell off those 10 schools to a charter company from up north. Also allegedly Mr. capo has had a complaint logged against him through The EEOC in-regards to Racism of an African-American Member of AFT. The God Mother is:

State Senator Sylvia Garcia

State Sen. Sylvia Garcia – According to The Houston Chronicle, Harris County Clerk Stan Stanart accused state Sen. Sylvia Garcia of delaying her resignation to boost her state pension even though it could leave 840,000 people in and around Houston without representation when the Texas Legislature convenes in January. “I also understand that the likely reason you want to delay your resignation until after Jan. 1, 2019, is to increase your state pension,” Stanart said.

In a follow-up interview, Stanart said he did not know how much money per year Garcia stands to gain by waiting until January to resign. State lawmaker pensions typically require a minimum of 8 years of service for vesting. Garcia has been in office for about 5 years and 5 months. But she would be able to combine her previous service in county government to boost her pension returns.

Garcia won her Democratic primary in the 29th Congressional District and is now heavily favored to defeat Republican Phillip Aronoff in the general election. If she wins, her salary will be $174,000 a year. Plus, according to Garcia’s financial disclosure reports, she also collects $60,840 a year from the city of Houston for her pension from serving as a judge and as the city’s controller. She was a judge from 1993 to 1998. She was controller from 1998 to 2002.

She also receives a $30,981 a year pension from the county for her service on the commissioners’ court from 2002 to 2010.

she’s occupied since winning a March 2013 special election.

Garcia did not agree to an interview for this story but sent a statement to the Houston Chronicle that did not answer whether she would financially benefit from delaying her retirement to January.

The Capo’s – Rudy Trevino School enforcer. Has had EEOC Complaints filed against him for racism in regards to sexual orientation. Has been alleged that he likes to intimidate HISD Principals.

Jorge Arendondo- A loyal Supporter of Diana Davila. Has heavily involved with the day to day running of Furr High School after Berdie Simmons was removed. Its also alleged that he would do anything to move up in HISD. He was also removed from Austin High School as an Administrator By Dr. Terry Grier.

Victor Trevino III – Very vocal of current Interim Superintendent. But he is also the son of Silvia And Victor Trevino. Likes making videos to make the current Super look bad.

Isa Aguilar – Sister of Diana Davila. She loves to work social media. In the past 3 weeks she has made very racial comments about not wanting an African American Superintendent. She said any other color would do.

Able Davila – Is the former disgraced HCC trustee who along with his wife were all caught up in the Larry Marshall scam. Its alleged that hes the muscle of the group.

Now once you connect the dots of this well organized crew.

You will find them in at all the Latino community events. In the past 10 months I personally havent seen any of them attend

any Black functions. They have spent the majority of their time bashing the highly qualified black interim superintendent.

So why are all these people involved in education decision making?

Simple its a pot of gold. And If the right person is in place then the Mob can control and squeeze funds from everyone involved. Its not like any of these people help African American kids. Because they dont. All decisions that they make is all designed to help them. Not their communities.

Show me where anyone of them have helped their communities. I don’t see. it. I will be keeping my eye on them. And, the scary part is that they dont hide their hands. They are very open about Latino leadership taking over the city of Houston.

The crazy thing is their justification for a Latino Superintendent is HISD is mostly Latino.

Who cares just find someone who can do the job. Well, I think we already have someone. But since you cant turn her into a crook she’s not the right fit.

to do with education. Why were they in a back room pressuring this man to get rid of Black employees? Why is Gallegos at a school board meeting lobbying for a New Superintendent?

Yet when you go to city council to speak about education he will tell you that’s not his arena.

Why Is Davila not checking her sister about the racist comments she post on social media? Simple they move like crooks move.

The Latino community needs to check these clowns. They are not doing nothing but having parades and taking pictures. At least black politicians give turkeys for thanksgiving. These people are getting rich off the backs of the east end and second ward Latinos. And, to hell with the Blacks in their communities. They don’t respect them

till election time. But, as we get closer to picking a new Superintendent This mafia will expose itself too. Hopefully just hopefully, One of them will become Sammy The Bull and turn on the whole click.

So my Latino Brothers and sisters are you fine with People that steal from charities and children? Are you fine with people that abuse women? Are you fine with Open racist representing you?

Are you fine with people abusing and throwing away the homeless. Unless you vote these people out then you must be. I just think you don’t know who they really are. Well, let me reintroduce them you. They are La Familia The education Mafia.

And some days they make offers you can’t refuse.

America’s Crisis of Leadership

HOUSTON - Democracy as a governing system is for a spiritually-educated-enlightened “intelligent� voting population.

Thus, there are three profound questions that must be asked: (1) What is God’s vision of leadership? (2). What is God’s vision of the world? (3). What was the Founders vision of a democratic America?

Now, we all know why the Founders created a mass-universal public education system.

This was done in order to ensure that every American obtained an education and likewise learn to read the Bible. For almost one hundred years America has been the leading spiritual-moral-democracy in the world community. Additionally, America has also been the leading economic power and military force for moral stability and good in the free-world with a stellar reputation for fairness and justice for every human being.

Unfortunately, Christian Right Evangelicals, RNC Officials, and “Trump-Want-ToBe-likes�, now desire to keep others from developmental opportunities in the “Home of the brave and the Land of the free�.

What an ungodly, bold-face, and brazen selfish mentality! To be sure, and we know that America is and will always remain a nation of immigrants, unless she destroys herself because of internal socio-economic-conflicts.

Inquiring minds want to know: How did America survive for (250) years without

the leadership mentality and bold-brazen-audacity of Donald J. Trump? Trump claims that he and he alone has accomplished more than all of the former Presidents in America’s stellar history. Hence, if President Obama did not accomplish anything in (8) years why has Trump been seeking to wipe-out the Obama Presidential record?

If he did not accomplish anything why spend so much time and effort seeking to wipe clean nothingness? Without a doubt, there is one exception to wiping clean Obama’s record: The death of Saudi Arabian, Osama Bin Laden.

Moreover, we know that George Washington never told a lie, and likewise, the entire world knows Trump never tells the truth. But, more importantly, every American should remember: “The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the forward mouth, do I hate.� (Proverbs 8: 13).

For we know that: “Jealousy is the rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.� (Proverbs 6: 34).

For, we all know, that: “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.�

(Proverbs 23: 7). America, never forget: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.� (Proverbs 18: 21).

The hateful rhetoric and “bold-face-lies� Trump has been spewing before and after his election has placed America in a very, very precarious position both with our Allies as well as our Neighborhoods.

In Charlottesville, Virginia a “White-Nationalists� ran a car into a crowd killing an American-female-citizen: Radicalized! A terrorist sending a mail

bomb to a major T.V. Network: Radicalized. A domestic terrorist sending pipe-bombs through the mail to former Presidents: Radicalized. A domestic terrorist sending a pipe-bomb to a former Attorney General: Radicalized! A domestic terrorist sending a pipe-bomb to a former CIA Director: Radicalized.

It can rightly be said that this domestic terrorism was fueled by the ungodly rhetoric of leader of the “Free-World�, not by a military-style-dictator. It must be forthrightly said that the repetitive Presidential nonsense of calling the “Free-Press� the “Fake-News and the enemy of the people� is asking for an on-slough of domestic terrorism. Constantly, referring to the Press as an enemy to democracy is to undermine democraticcivil-governance-structures.

More importantly, to not forthrightly admit that a foreign dictatorial power interfered in the 2016 Presidential election after (8) national security agencies said that it was “Putin’s� Russia who was responsible for the national security violation is in and of itself “treasonous�. Meeting with the murderous dictator of North Korea (Kim Jung) without adequate pre-planning and without obtaining measurable benefits is fool-heartedly. The leader of the free-world should never give an international platform to a murderous thug.

Trump has declared that he has assembled the most “professionally-dynamic-intellectually-capable� Cabinet assembled by any other former Presidential Administration. Question: Why then have so many of Trump’s appointees fallen by the preverbal-wayside? And, of course, some who have not exited should have never been appointed?

BOOKER T. WASHINGTON HIGH Can Homecoming Influence our College Choices?

HOUSTON - Homecoming is defined by Webster’s Dictionary as the act of returning home, and the Homecoming at Booker T. Washington High School, and Prairie A & M University was just that!

Coming home to the people who knew you before you embarked upon any portion of success. They knew you when you were struggling to become the person you desired to be and they loved and guided you regardless.

Walking through the aisles at Booker T. Washington and Prairie View’s Homecomings, you could see multiple generations of graduates in the stands, sitting by their RV’s and chilling underneath their tents. The array of beautiful silver hair represented

the distinguished and successful alumni, the partially mingled grey hair represented the middle-aged graduates still rising up the ladder of success, and the blue, gold, black and afro-centric hair of the new generation of graduates permeated the yard represented the struggle to graduate and achieve the success of their predecessors.

Remembering the small nuances of the pushes to do better, the reminders of when work is due, the threats when work has not been submitted and the hugs received when you have made an accomplishment is an irreplaceable value that goes unspoken when referring to African-American High Schools and Universities.

This warmth cannot be duplicated and you cannot get this feeling from anywhere but

home; which is why they call it Homecoming!

In the wake of both Homecomings, the plight of decision at Booker T. Washington is still looming over students, who are soon to be graduates of which universities or colleges are best for African-American students to attend?

The most obvious question is will our students do better emotionally, socially and intellectually at HBCU (Historically Black College or University), or a PWU (Predominately White University)?

Will our students receive this same type of parental guidance when attending a predominately White high school or university?

Will they receive the one-on-one attention? Will there be an obstruction or motivation to continue in times of struggle?

Flowers for All Occasions

How about that hug that may be needed when one’s family needs money and deadlines are approaching? On the other end of the spectrum, if they persevere, will the job offers be fast and furious and of a high caliber?

Our students did some research and in a single study which stated, “Two researchers’ new study of degree attainment at Historically Black Colleges and Universities versus predominantly White institutions, also known, in the study, as PWIs, found that the chances of graduating in six years for Black students are significantly higher at the Black colleges, when controlling for key variables.�

The study, called “Degree Attainment for Black Students at HBCUs and PWIs: A Propensity Score Matching Approach,� found that Black students who attend HBCUs are between 6

percent and 16 percent more likely to graduate within six years than those who attend predominantly White institutions.

The findings of the 2017 report also state, “A Look at Black Student Success,� were consistent with Franke’s study once the data was limited to low-income, freshman students. For those figures, Nichols’s study found that HBCUs graduate Black students at higher rates (38 percent versus 32 percent for comparable PWIs) despite their students’ having lower standardized test scores and greater financial need (Chronicle for Higher Education, 2017).

With so much information in our global society, our students must continue to research to see what best works for them.

SSLW Celebrates National Make a Difference Day

ROSENBERG - Suburban Sugar Land Women (SSLW) hosted National Make a Difference Day, at Brazosview Health Care Center with residents and staff and engaging fellowship, delicious food and fantastic fun activities.

First, the fun-filled day began with a complimentary, homecooked breakfast by East Beast Catering which consisted of eggs, biscuits, oatmeal, grits, bacon, sausage and orange juice for 25 residents and 9 staff members. Then, Ms. Barbara, the yoga instructor, instructed residents on how to do yoga from their chair. This included stretching and breathing exercises. The residents said they felt very relax and enjoyed the yoga exercises.

Next, residents played bingo in which they were highly engaged, laughed and had a good time. Later, complimentary gift bags were given to all residents, which included body wash, socks, shampoo and conditioner. Lastly, SSLW provided all on-site staff with thank you WalMart gift cards for making a difference in the community.

October birthday’s celebrants enjoyed a delicious birthday

cake. Wow, what an amazing day for the residents, staff and volunteers!

Additionally, SSLW would like to offer gratitude to Brazosview Health Care Center’s residents and staff; Ms. Keisha Butler, Activity Director; 11-year-old volunteer, Chase; East Beast Catering and Alief Hasting High School TAFE’s volunteers for serving. Kudos to Donisha Smith, Project Chair and Judeene Edison, Tomika Lewis and Dr. Devette George, Project Co-Chairs for their exemplary leadership; they collaborated biweekly for months in designing, planning and implementing this successful service project.

End Alzheimer occurred at the University of Houston. It is the world’s largest event with 600+ communities nationwide participating to raise awareness and fund for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. Patrick Jean Louis, SSLW Project Chair, cheerfully assisted in registration from 5:30 -8:30am.

MISSOURI CITY - “ A Literary Café” hosted Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc, Suburban Houston – Fort Bend Alumnae Chapter showcased 15 renowned authors, 13 unique vendors, live entertainment and 200+ attendees at the free and open to the public event. Mable and Mose Austin, SSLW’s Founders, provided desserts and voter’s information materials.

HOUSTON -- Recently, more than 1,100 senior citizens from across the state attended Houston City Council Member Amanda Edwards’ The Empowered You: Houston Senior Citizens Conference. It served as a one-stop-shop event which provided resources and information to help senior citizens thrive in this season of their lives.

The event consisted of dynamic speakers, informative workshops, community resources and a host of other fun activities ranging from cooking classes to line dancing.

“In my role, I always strive to empower residents and equip communities the tools they need to succeed,” Houston City Council Member Amanda Edwards said. “Giving seniors the information they need to make

this the best chapter of their lives is what this conference is all about.”

Residents learned about topics such as estate planning, life after retirement, navigating healthcare and more. Featured speakers included Rawle Andrews Jr., Esq., the regional vice president of AARP and Jane Bavineau, vice president of Sheltering Arms Senior Services.

“Seeing the smiles on all the residents’ faces and watching them choose which workshops they want to attend really makes all this worth it,” Edwards said.

“I would like to thank all of our community partners, speakers, resource fair participants, volunteers, my staff, and everyone who attended who helped make the event such a success.”
