Dr. Assata Richards is the founding director of the Sankofa Research Institute (S.R.I.), which is a nonprofit with a mission to “create knowledge to build community”.

To accomplish its mission, SRI employs Community-Based Participatory Research to work collaboratively with academic researchers, community organizations and funders to generate empirical evidence to inform social change.

Some of SRI’s current and past project partners include Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy, Southeast Houston Transformation Alliance of the Local Initiatives Support Corporation, Dance Source Houston, Project Row Houses, St. Anne Catholic Church, and CHRISTUS Health Foundation.

Dr. Assata received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Houston, and went on to earn a master’s and doctoral degree from Pennsylvania State University. She has extensive training in quantitative and qualitative research methods and analysis.

After serving on the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh, she returned to Houston, Texas, to work with Project Row Houses (P.R.H.), a nationally and internationally recognized public arts organization that utilizes art as a transformative mechanism for revitalizing economically-depressed urban communities.

Dr. Assata is an adjunct professor at the University of Houston where she teaches courses in the sociology department and the arts leadership program.

Mayor Sylvester Turner appointed Dr. Assata to chair his Housing Transition Committee in 2016. Dr. Assata is also the Vice Chair of the Emancipation Economic Development Council, which is a community-led effort with the mission to “Inspire Hope and Contribute to the Revitalization and Preservation of the Third Ward.”

FS: What do you love to photograph the most and how does your photography fit into your lifestyle and travel?

QC: l always have time because my camera is always with me. One of my favorite “live” pieces was with India Arie. The smile, the exchange between two people, the intensity or the freedom being expressed. I’d have to share one of my favorite love pieces can be seen on India Arie’s Christmas with Friends featuring Joe Sample.

India and my dear friend (her manager at the time), Anasa Troutman, invited me to hang out at Wire Road Studios in Houston. I referred a photographer who didn’t show. They asked if I would be open to capture B roll for promo and possibly video content for later use. The next day I brought my Canon 5D Mark III. The shots were fun, intense, free, and ended up, not only being the featured images on the entire album, but the last formal images of Joe Sample before he passed away. It’s definitely a historic live capture that I will always hold dear.

FS: You have traveled the world. Is there a particular location you love to photograph?

QC: I have been on The Black Cat World Tour that spans from August 2016 to March 2018 with one of the largest international Italian artist, Zucchero. We have played this historic amphitheater 21 times, so I had the opportunity to really explore the inner depths of its stone JANUARY 2018

architectural design.

FS: What advice would you give to those who are interested in photography?

QC: First: STAY CALM! Perspective is important to maintain for longevity. Celebrities need balance, too. So if you are trusted to be in the role of capturing their image in some of their highest points or most intense expressions, serve them and serve the best presentation of the moment, whether it’s studio or live.

Secondly: STAY HONEST but TIMELY. As the photographer, sometimes you see details that may have been overlooked: a hanging bra strap, a “little friend” in the left nostril or a tucked pant leg. So as you see things that are not flattering or have ideas that can enhance the shot, choose the best timing to express the suggestion and you will find celebrities appreciate that honesty and commitment to their brand.

Finally: The third advise I would suggest in all things is STAY HUMBLE. The industry is small and technology is making it easier for the so many people to capture great images from the devices. So knowing your craft and your camera are important but developing and maintaining relationships and remaining confidently humble will take you very far!
