Are We Losing Our Identity? “We didn’t want anybody telling us anything about Africa, much less calling us Africans. In hating Africa and in hating the Africans, we ended up hating ourselves, without even realizing it. Because you can’t hate the roots of a tree and not hate the tree. You can’t hate your origin and not end up hating yourself. You can’t hate Africa and not hate yourself.” - Malcolm X
When my father was born, the race listed on his birth certificate was Negro. My birth certificate has Colored on it, my daughter’s birth certificate has Black and my granddaughter is an African-American according to her birth facts. Nowadays, with the mixing of various races, some African-Americans are even being identified as, “Other”. Now ain’t that a real Mother For Ya!?!?! Through all of the changes that Black people have been through since this country’s inception it is enough to have any person of our race struggling with an identity crisis. But, it is one thing for other people to cause confusion within the

said, “A people without knowledge of their history is like a tree without roots.” Maya Angelou second his notion when she stated, “The more you know of your history, the more liberated you are.” For this reason, it is imperative that Black folks learn Black history year round, because it is the best way to understand why we do what we do and why we look the way we look. As it is, the real truth about the African-American culture in this country has been white-washed to depict a weak and inferior race of people. But, if Black folks would resort to a path to find out where we come from, we would find

n my lifetime and even before, White folks have always been called, “White”; Indians have always been called, “Indians”; individuals of Chinese descent have always been labeled, “Chinese”; the same for Hispanics/Mexicans and the other nationalities which are represented across this nation. However, Black people have been called some of any and every thing since our entrance into these United States. Notwithstanding the fact that we were once considered as 3/5th a person; even so, we have been called, “Boy”, “Colored”, “Negro”, “Black” and “African-American”. By the way, those are the “official” terms that were listed to represent us. But, of course more obscene words have been used to define African-Americans. I often make reference to the many identifying factors of race indicated on various generations of Blacks who have been birthed into this country, such as myself.
Since the inception of this nation Black people are the only race of people that have officially been classified as several terms. We have gone from 3/5 a person, to Negro, Colored Black, African-American and in some cases, “Other”.

Black race and to have Black folks confused about their identity. But, many modern-day African-Americans are intentionally losing their own identity by choice. We MUST Understand there is a dire need for Africans living in America to not only embrace our culture, but, to learn who we are as a people and learn our history. Marcus Garvey once
that Black people are amongst the original race of people to not only inhabit America, but the world itself. Africans living in America stem from a strong and royal heritage, yet many refuse to study and research their heritage. I have heard many Black people like, Herman Cain who choose to omit his African heritage. Cain identifies himself as
a “Black-American” opposed to “African-American”. I have heard people say, “I’m not from Africa, I was born in America; so, I’m not an African-American.” The irony of such mindsets is that while Black people can choose to deny their African heritage, when those who do not look like us see us, they view us all the same. William L. Jones noted in his book entitled, “The Importance of Black Identity to the Black Adolescent,” several points relative to this subject. He notated, “The Black American, however, was brought to this country originally as a slave. His families had been torn asunder and his origins had been deliberately obliterated. In fact, even before his arrival here, a fiendish White plot was fomented to blot out any vestige of culture and tradition for the African, and he was continually drilled in the belief that he was of a subhuman species and consequently had not actual heritage worth preserving. All of the European nations were in on this insidious plot with the British Empire leading the way!” It is for all of the aforementioned reasons that African-American News & Issues exists. As the Publisher, I can state that this publication, was designed to not only address current and historical realities affecting our communities; but, also to give our people a sense of pride and to learn who we are. So, while I pose the question, “Are We Losing Our Identity,” it is my sincere hope and desire that we are not. Because at the rate that we are evolving and with so many of us disregarding and having a lack of concern about “Our Story”, if we are not careful we will lose our identity.

And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria. And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)” - St. Luke 2:1-4. In closing out the holiday season, I thought on this scripture in reference to the United States. Curiosity caused me to wonder, “What would happen if the WORLD issued a decree that every immigrant was to be taxed to return to the country of his or her descent?” If all foreign immigrants were charged to Please Stand Up and go home, America as it has been known would be no more. That is, in reference to food, music, recreation, styles and trends and any other factors associated with immigrant-implementation. But first, let’s get an understanding of what an “immigrant” is. According to Merriam-Webster, an immigrant is defined as, “a person who comes to a country to take up permanent residence.” Therefore, if we were to rewind back to America’s history, which alleges Christopher Columbus discovered it in 1492; we would find, “only 1.3% of the country’s present population is original”. Once again, “Will the Real Immigrants, Please Stand Up!” The United States Census Bureau has seven classifications it lists to categorize the various races which are rep-

resented throughout the country today. Those classifications include: White alone, Black or African-American alone, American Indian and Alaska Native alone, Asian alone, Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone, Two of More Races, Hispanic or Latino and White alone, not Hispanic or Latino. Despite the varying races which are present in the US today, one fact history cannot be white-wash - Indians were first to inhabit America.

An extract from the report reveals, “The first English explorers to settle in North America arrived five years after Columbus in 1497, led by the Italian Giovanni Caboto (John Cabot). In 1585, English colonists attempted to settle at a place called Roanoke. The settlement lasted only for a

fled, at least 100 “unprepared” settlers remained. Due to the lack of provision for food and other essential necessities for survival, famine and sickness soared amongst the settlers killing the majority of them. Those who were left, “together with new arrivals, began to cultivate the land, growing tobacco.” Before long, “Native American hunting grounds were taken, and the Native Americans began to fight back; any chance of peaceful relations were at an end.”
America is a melting pot of immigrants. So actually, if you took all of the immigrants outside of America, you’d be missing a lot of flavor, starting with the food, with the culture, with the dance, with everything. - Wyclef Jean George Catlin, a 19th-century artist who heavily researched the natives described the group as, “a numerous and noble race of human beings.” In a diary he composed as he traveled the coasts painting portraits of the “fast passing to extinction” race; he concluded, “The Indians of North America were

Only a brave group would commit a hostile takeover and strip inhabitants of their land and call it their own, in the name of the “Land of the Free”. But, “Will the Real Immigrants, Please Stand Up?” Fast forward to the emergence of other immigrants. History. com explains, 20 African slaves were brought to America in 1619 by a Dutch ship. It further notes, “Throughout the 17th century, European settlers in North America turned to African slaves as a cheaper, more plentiful labor source than indentured servants, who were mostly poor Europeans.” Furthermore, History estimates, “6 to 7 million Black slaves were imported to the New World during the 18th century alone, depriving the African continent of some of its healthiest and ablest men and women.” Over the course of the next century, “America’s westward expansion and the abolition movement provoked a great debate over slavery that would tear the nation apart in the bloody Civil War. Though the Union victory freed the nation’s four million slaves, the legacy of slavery continued to influence American history, from the Reconstruction era to the civil rights movement that emerged a century after emancipation.” Continue reading online www.aframnews.com

NLC Elects Amanda Edwards
LOS ANGELES, CA – Amanda K. Edwards, Houston City Council Member in AtLarge Position 4, of Houston, was elected to the National League of Cities (NLC) board of directors by NLC’s membership at the 2018 City Summit in Los Angeles. Edwards was elected to a 1-year term and will provide strategic direction and guidance for NLC’s federal advocacy, governance and membership activities. NLC is the largest and most representative organization for cities, their elected leaders and municipal staff, and advocates for city priorities in Washington by building strong federal-local partnerships. “I am grateful for this opportunity because Houston can now have a seat at the table when helping drive federal policy that effects residents at the local level,” Edwards said.

Cleophas Steele Social Justice Award
DALLAS - State Representative Eric Johnson has been awarded the 2018 Cleophas R. Steele, Jr. Social Justice Award for his work in the Texas Legislature. He recently accepted the award at Good Street Baptist Church in Dallas. The Cleophas R. Steele, Jr. Social Justice Award was established honor of the late Judge Cleophas Steele. Judge Steele was a graduate of Lincoln High School, a school located in the district Rep. Johnson currently represents. He founded one of the first African-American law firms in the City of Dallas and served as an associate municipal judge and Justice of the Peace for 31 years. After retiring in 2006, Judge Steele returned to serve as a Constable for Precinct 1 in Dallas, a position he held until he passed away in 2015.

HOUSTON - Recently, Aldine High School senior running back, Jacorey Howard signed a national letter of intent with Texas Southern University during the early signing period. During his senior season, Howard rushed for 1,417 yards and scored 13 touchdowns.

Tyrique Matthews HOUSTON- Touchdown Club of Houston’s 2018 UIL High School Awards finalists were announced during the awards dinner just recently in the Galleria. The Touchdown Club of Houston has been handing out its Player of the Year honors to the top high school players in the Houston area since 1980. Each year, both a senior offensive and defensive player from public schools in Greater Houston are given the award. Eisenhower HS’ Tyrique Matthews was among the 20 finalists recognized. The linebacker is committed to play for Texas Tech University in fall 2019. Past winners include the likes of future NFL stars such as Thurman Thomas, Vince Young and Andrew Luck.

Self-executing Contract/Security Agreement in event of Unauthorized Use: By this Copyright Notice, both the juristic person and the agent of said juristic person, hereinafter jointly and severally “User,” consent and agree that any use of any of DELWIN DARNELL CAMPBELL© and JEREMIAH DARNELL CAMPBELL©, other than authorized use as set forth above constitutes unauthorized use, counterfeiting, of Secured Party’s Agreement wherein User is debtor and Delwin Darnel Campbell is Secured Party, and signifies that User; (1) grants interest in assets, land, and personal property, in the sum certain amount of $500,000.00 per each occurrence of use of any of the common-law-copyrighted trade-names/trade-marks DELWIN DARNELL CAMPBELL© and JEREMIAH DARNELL CAMPBELL©, as well as for each and every occurrence of use of any and all derivatives of, and variations in the spelling of, respectively, DELWIN DARNELL CAMPBELL© and JEREMIAH DARNELL CAMPBELL©, not excluding “Delwin Darnell Campbell,” and “Jeremiah Darnell Campbell,” respectively, plus costs, plus triple damages; (2) authenticates this Security Agreement wherein User is debtor and Delwin Darnell Campbell© is Secured Party, and wherein User pledges all of User’s property, i.e. all commercial tort claims, letters of credit, letter-of-credit rights, chattel paper, instruments, deposit accounts, accounts, documents, and general intangibles, and all User’s interest in all such foregoing property, now owned and hereafter acquired, now existing and hereafter arising, and whatever located, as collateral for securing User’s contractual obligation in favor of Secured Party for User’s unauthorized use of Secured Party’s common-law copyrighted property; (3) consent and agrees with Secured Party’s filing of a UCC Financial Statement in the UCC filing office, as well as in any county recorder’s office, wherein User is debtor and Delwin Darnell Campbell© is Secured Party; (4) consents and agrees that said UCC Financing Statement described above in paragraph “(3)” is continuing financing statement, and further consents and agrees with Secured Party’s filing of any continuation statement necessary for maintaining Secured Party’s perfected security interest in all of User’s property and interest property, pledged as collateral in this Security Agreement and described above in paragraph “(2),” until User’s contractual obligation theretofore incurred has been fully satisfied; (5) consents and agrees with Secured Party’s filing of any UCC Financing Statement, as described above in paragraph “(3)” and “(4),” as well as the filling of any Security Agreement, as described above in paragraph “(2),” in the UCC filing office, as well as in any county recorder’s office; (6) consents and agrees that any and all such filings described in paragraphs “(4)” and “(5)” above are not, and may not be considered, bogus, and that User will not claim that any such filing is bogus; (7) waives all defenses; and (8) appoints Secured Party as Authorized Representative for User, effective upon User’s default re User’s contractual obligations in favor of Secured Party as set forth below under “Payment Terms” and “Default Terms,” granting Secured Party full authorization and power for engaging in any and all actions on behalf of User including, but not limited by, authentication of a record on behalf of User, as Secured Party, in Secured Party’s sole discretion, deems appropriate, and User further consents and agrees that this appointment of Secured Party as Authorized Representative for User, effective upon User’s default, is irrevocable and coupled with a security interest. User further consents and agrees with all of the following additional terms of Self-executing Contract/Security Agreement in Event of Unauthorized Use: Payment Terms: In accordance with fees for unauthorized use of an of DELWIN DARNELL CAMPBELL©, and JEREMIAH DARNELL CAMPBELL© as set forth above, User hereby consents and agrees that User shall pay Secured Party all unauthorized-use fees in full within ten (10) days of the date User is sent Secured Party’s invoice, hereinafter “Invoice,” itemizing said fees. Default Terms: In event of non-payment in full of all unauthorized-use fees by User within ten (10) days of date Invoice is sent, User shall be deemed in default and: (a) all of User’s property and interest in property pledged as collateral by User, as described above in paragraph “(2)” immediately becomes, i.e. is, property of Secured Party; (b) Secured Party is appointed User’s Authorized Representative as set forth above in paragraph “(8)”; and (c) User consents and agrees that Secured Party may take possession of, as well as otherwise disposes of in any manner that Secured Party, in Secured Party’s sole discretion, deems appropriate, including, but not limited by, sale at auction, at any time following User’s default, and without further notice, including, but not limited by, sale at auction, at any time following User’s default, and without further notice, any and all User’s former property and interest in property, as described above in paragraph “(2),” formerly pledged as collateral by User, now property of Secured Party, in respect of this “Self-existing Contract/Security Agreement in Event of Unauthorized Use,” that Secured Party, again in Secured Party’s sole discretion, deems appropriate. Terms for Curing Default: Upon event of default, as set forth above under “Default Terms,” irrespective of any and all of User’s former property and interest in property, in the possession of, as well as disposed of by, Secured Party, as authorized above under “Default Terms,” User may cure User’s default re only the remainder of User’s former property and interest in property formerly pledge as collateral that is neither in the possession of, nor otherwise disposed of by, Secured Party within twenty (20) days of date of User’s default only by payment in full. Terms of Strict Foreclosure: User’s non-payment in full of all unauthorized-use fees itemized in Invoice within said twenty- (20) day period for curing default as set forth above under “Terms for Curing Default” authorized Secured Party’s immediate non-judicial strict foreclosure on any and all remaining property and interest I property formerly pledged as collateral by User, now property of Secured party, which is not in the possession of, nor otherwise disposed of by, Secured Party upon expiration of said twenty – (20) day default-curing period.
