We Must Believe

A

s I’m writing this article, voters are still voting and are awaiting the election results. In my mind, what I have seen in the last two years is, “our American people have started to believe in each other again”. I can see people from different races, religious groups and backgrounds coming together like I’ve never seen in America before.

Although there has been growth in evil un-American racist individuals, like the White nationalists and Neo Nazi groups over the past two or three years, the majority of our American citizens are coming together. This coming together is based on the fact that the majority of Americans are good decent respectful people who love our Nation and respect their fellow citizens.

Having said that, I know we must believe in the success of all of our people. We can’t let anything keep Americans from respecting each other and working together to make everyone’s lives better.

Our American history clearly shows when our Nation is not doing the “right thing” for all of its citizens, it struggles. A key testimony is found in the slavery and oppression our ancestors experienced. When slavery was going on in America, it led to a Civil War, which left so many people dead and so many families broken.

America was not a strong nation when people owned slaves and a lot of the citizens at the time also felt that this practice was not good for America.

While the plantation owners, who owned slaves, were making themselves rich with money gained from slave labor, they were not the voices for all of the free Americans.

There were millions of poor White people in America who didn’t own slaves and didn’t respect or approve the use of slaves, the Plantation life style and how they were doing business.

I’ve heard people say over the years that President Abraham Lincoln told the South and their plantation owners that if they didn’t secede, slavery was safe.

I wasn’t born in that era and I don’t know if that is true or not, but what I do know is that “Slaves saved America” under the leadership of President Abraham Lincoln.

When the Civil War was happening in the 1800’s the decision to put Black soldiers on the battle field was made by President Lincoln. The reason Black soldiers were put into battle was because the Union Army’s soldiers were losing the war. After putting these powerful former slaves into the battle for the North, the North started to win the battles and they eventually won the Civil War. It may be assumed that if slavery would have continued, plantation owners and their families would have continued to grow richer at the expense of slave labor. However, America would not have grown and the plantations and their owners would have lacked the protection of the nation. Therefore the nation would have subsequently been subjected to attacks by outside “World Forces” that have historically operated as pirates and non-lawful people, thriving and plundering money and property of the rich and wealthy people.

Without national protection the South would not have survived long by itself. America

is at its greatest and commands world respect as the best nation on the planet when all of its citizens work together.

We must believe as citizens, that we are a nation not divided by our skin color, religion, financial status or any source including our current POTUS. I will end this article by saying, “We Must Believe” in God and America. Assured that God will allow us to prosper and flourish despite any hate and opposition we may encounter.

I read the masterful article written by Chelsea Davis-Bibb, M.Ed. titled “If I Was A Black Man In America”. This article is amazing and provides an in depth perspective to the stigmas and challenges Black men experience. When I read the paragraphs 5 and 6, I have or know other Black men who have experienced the list of negative challenges Chelsea listed that face every single day in society.

I want to thank Chelsea for this excellent content and thought provoking article!

What the Hell is Going on at the NAACP?

As a Black man in the city of Houston, personally I feel like the current NAACP leadership has ran its course. The only member I trust at this point is Dr. Carolyn Evans Shabazz.

She is very active in the community and always fighting for the rights of her people. Now I don’t do James Dixon. I refuse to stand with a man that I feel is bought and paid for by upper level politics.

You never see him unless he’s trying to calm the Black community down. Why aren’t people like him fighting the good

Black fight daily? Simple. They feel they can get more done without an organization that does nothing. I like Dr. James Douglas.

Yet, I feel it’s time to step aside and yield the post to a new young innovative mind. It’s time for the branch to work for the people.

These young people have the drive and will to take this organization to new heights. I like the fact that they will stand and fight while the old regime like to sit back and wait for the fight to come to them. I like the fact they don’t support charter schools. I like the fact that they will stand up to any bully and fight the good fight. I do believe if a racist group, decided to to have a protest on the branches front yard, they would be ready to go to war.

I also believe the values that the NAACP uses as its foundation will not be altered or changed by the young guns.

Sometimes you have to sit your old a?? down. The old heads need to know that you prepared the youngsters for the day when they would have to take over.

The time has come. Stand down James Douglas and let the organization grow. Stand down and watch these young trail blazers do what you taught them. Let them be great in their own way.

Don’t stop progress just because you don’t want be irrelevant anymore. Your legacy is already cemented. It’s time for a new Dynasty. It’s time for this organization to rise again.

Sometimes you have to pass the Baton.

If you choose not to pass the baton, the question is why? Is there some hidden money that can be made? We all know local political figures stay messing with the money.

Black Women, Pregnancy and Death

W

hen a new baby is on the way, there is a lot of excitement.

However, the process to get the baby here safely can be stressful, overwhelming and sadly, even deadly.

The CDC (Center for Disease Control) reported that “women in the U.S. are more likely to die from childbirth or a pregnancy related cause than other women in the developed world.” As a nation that is developed and filled with many technological advances, you would think that this would not be the case.

In addition, “The risk of pregnancy-related deaths for Black women is 3 to 4 times higher than those of White women.”

Why is this?

I recently became a mother to a beautiful baby girl on July 11th. I didn’t have the easiest pregnancy, but no one could have prepared me for what was to come. I went into labor thinking I was going to have a normal delivery.

Shortly thereafter, my water broke, things started to go downhill. Several times, my daughter’s heart rate continued to drop. The nurses would put me in different positions to get her rate stabilized, but shortly after they did, it would just drop again. They even gave me medicine to speed the labor process up, but I wouldn’t dilate past four centimeters.

After ten hours in, a fever and another heart rate drop later, the doctor came rushing in and said “we have to take her.” I knew

what that meant right away, a C-section. The tears immediately rushed down my face as terror filled my heart. This was my biggest fear as I had never had surgery before, and it seemed as if my nightmare had turned into my reality.

The umbilical cord was wrapped around my daughter’s neck. Thankfully, everything went well and my baby and I are doing well. But what if everything didn’t go well? What if things went wrong? After reading about the data from the CDC, I couldn’t help but think about the “what ifs?” I do want another child one day, and even though I can’t live in fear, this research is something that will stick with me.

The idea that Black women are more at risk at facing a pregnancy related death is baffling, and even though there may not be a definite answer, there are a few things that I found. For one, overall health may be a factor.

How we as Black women take care of ourselves is very important.

There are so many health issues that occurs in the Black race like high blood pressure, and diabetes, just to name a few, and this could impact the pregnancy.

In addition, there is a lot of poverty within the Black race, so women of color may not have access to proper health care.

There was also a discussion about the hospital a woman selects and the care she receives.

When you are pregnant there are many appointments that need to be attended and etc., but, if a woman does not have access to insurance, she may not be able to provide good health care for herself or her baby.

Having a baby is not cheap, so if money is an issue, the woman may not be as willing to receive the health care that is needed.

Although these are just a few

factors, genetics and the environment can also play a big role in this as well.

There is so much that can go wrong during pregnancy, delivery, and even after birth, and in some situations, some things can’t be prevented. One thing I found interesting was that women are still at risk of dying up to a year after giving birth.

My daughter is about to turn 4 months old, so that means I am still at risk.

I am not a doctor, but there are a few things that women can and should do in order to increase their chances of having a safe delivery and healthy life. It is important that women take care of themselves not only during the pregnancy, but before and after. This includes working out, eating right and getting the proper amount of rest. During pregnancy, it is also imperative that women go to all appointments and take their pre-natal vitamins.

In addition, women need to find a doctor that is knowledgeable, experienced and someone they feel like they can trust. If you sense that something may be wrong or not seem right, a woman should not take the risk of being okay, but should go to the doctor immediately.

Most importantly, women need to educate themselves about the process it takes to have a baby and even the process that occurs after delivery. When I found out I was pregnant, I immediately started reading about the different aspects of pregnancy.

I even attended a few classes. I did not want to go into the process blind, and I am glad I attended the classes. If God blesses us to give birth, we must do whatever we can to take care of ourselves so that we can enjoy the little bundle of joy long after delivery.

We MUST Understand

The Cost of Leadership “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” r. Martin Luther King, Sr. once rendered these most prolific words. I thought on his words of wisdom as I pondered over the outcome of the most recent mid-term elections which heavily impacted our nation. I paralleled what I saw in several of the electoral races to one thought: Good versus Evil.

There is one thing about evil, it has the tendency to prevail for a little while. But, if goodwill and intentions continue to resonate and remain consistent, the good will win in the end. That is my encouragement to the likes of those genuine-hearted leaders such as Andrew Gillum (Florida) and Beto O’Rourke (Texas).

Although these candidates were not victorious in their election good still overshadowed the election as Democrats regained control over the house.

All these things impact the African-American community.

We MUST Understand the perilous time we, Africans living in America are experiencing is nothing new to our culture. I felt the need to elaborate on the subject after a great outpouring from the community. Our community was once surrounded by people, organizations and leaders who were seriously concerned about the issues that plague those from our communities the most.

But, these days our people are suffering and have nowhere to

go. They have nowhere to turn to. In fact, African-American News & Issues has become a place of refuge for members from our communities who want to be heard; because they feel there is no place who advocates on the Civil right issues we are dealing with in 2018.

We are constantly losing our young Black men and women to the systematic design that was implemented for to be overtaken by. Something has to be done.

With that being stated, I must admit that there is a way to do anything. I always say, “Success without a successor is failure.”

To that regard, I presented a feature not too long ago entitled, “WANTED: Black Leadership”.

The sentiments that I conveyed in that piece still remain the same. We need young vibrant, motivated and dedicated leaders from within our communities. If the new-age Civil Rights movements are to gain any type of momentum it has to start amongst those that it affects the most.

With the same token, while it is true that our young people need to take an active role and step up to the plate. They must understand it’s a different ball game now. If our youth are to be successful in combatting the issues that have continued to invade our fortress, it can only be done by direction and guidance from those who came before you.

There is a cost of leadership, as we are witnessing daily throughout this country. So, while I encourage our young people to step, I would also like to admonish them to be swift to understanding, seeking and adhering to the advice and guidance of the current leadership.

Because time has shown that what is happening in real-time is history repeating itself of past transgressions against our peo- AANI ple.

Mickey Leland

BIOGRAPHY HOUSTON - George Thomas “Mickey” Leland was America’s most effective spokesman for hungry people in the United States and throughout the world.

During six terms in the Congress, six years as a Texas state legislator and Democratic National Committee official, he focused much needed attention on issues of health and hunger and rallied support that resulted in both public and private action.

Leland combined the skills of the charismatic leader with the power of a sophisticated behindthe-scenes congressman.

He matured during his years in Congress into a brilliantly effective and influential advocate for food security and health care rights for every human being.

When Mickey Leland died in 1989, he was Chairman of the House Select Committee on Hunger. His committee studied the problems associated with domestic and international hunger and then delivered the practical solution of food.

Early Life and Education George Thomas “Mickey” Leland, III, was born on November 27, 1944, in Lubbock, Texas, to Alice and George Thomas Leland, II. At an early age, he, along with his mother and brother (William Gaston Leland), took up residence in the Fifth Ward of Houston.

Growing up in a predominately African-American and Hispanic neighborhood, Leland’s first experience with the “public” was in a segregated public school. Leland showed early promise as a student, however.

He ranked in the top ten percent of his class when he graduated in 1964 from Philis Wheatley High School. While attending TSU (Texas Southern University) in the late sixties, Leland emerged as a vocal leader of the local civil rights movement and

brought national leaders of the movement to Houston. He graduated from Texas Southern University’s School of Pharmacy in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy.

He served as an Instructor of Clinical Pharmacy at his alma mater from 1970-71, and set up a “door to door” outreach campaign in low-income neighborhoods to inform people about their medical care options and to perform preliminary screenings. During the same period Mickey Leland organized and led the Black Citizens Action Teams (“Black Cats”) to protest against police brutality.

Whip in his first term, and later served twice as At-Large Majority Whip. Leland was re-elected to each succeeding Congress until his death in August 1989.

As he visited soup kitchens and makeshift shelters, he became increasingly concerned about the hungry and homeless. The work for which he is best remembered began when Leland co-authored legislation with Rep. Ben Gilman (R-NY) to establish the House Select Committee on Hunger. Speaker Thomas P. “Tip” O’Neil named Leland chairman when it was enacted in 1984. The Select Committee’s mandate was to “conduct a continuing, comprehensive study and review of the problems of hunger and malnutrition.”

Although it had no legislative jurisdiction, the committee, for the first time, provided a single focus for hunger-related issues.

The committee’s impact and influence would stem largely from Congressman Leland’s ability to generate awareness of complex hunger alleviation issues and exert his personal moral leadership. In addition to focusing attention on issues of hunger, his legislative initiatives would create the National Commission on Infant Mortality, better access to fresh food for at-risk women, children and infants, and the first comprehensive services for the homeless.

Leland’s sensitivity to the immediate needs of poor and hungry people would soon make him a spokesman for hungry people on a far broader scale.

Reports of acute famine in sub-Saharan Africa prompted Speaker O’Neil to ask Leland to lead a bipartisan Congressional delegation to assess conditions and relief requirements. When Leland returned, he brought together entertainment personalities, religious leaders and private voluntary agencies to

create general public support for the Africa Famine Relief and Recovery Act of 1985. That legislation provided $800 million in food and humanitarian relief supplies. The international attention Leland had focused on the famine brought additional support for non-governmental efforts, saving thousands of lives.

Leland’s ability to reach out to others with innovative ideas and to gain support from unlikely sources was a key to his success in effectively addressing the problems of the poor and minorities. He met with both Pope John Paul II about food aid to Africa and with Fidel Castro about reuniting Cuban families.

In Moscow as part of the first Congressional delegation let by a Speaker of the House in the post-Cold War era, he proposed a joint U.S. - Soviet food initiative to Mozambique.

As chairman of the Black Caucus, Leland proudly presented the first awards the Caucus had ever given to a non-Black, rock musician Bob Geldorf and news person Ted Koppel. Geldorf was honored for his Band Aid concert and fund-raising efforts for African famine victims and Koppel for his news stories on the African famine.

Mickey Leland was a powerful advocate on other causes as well. While chairing the House Select Committee on Hunger, Leland was a member of the Committee on Energy and Commerce, and the Subcommittees on Telecommunications and Finance, Health and the Environment, and Energy and Power. He chaired the Subcommittee on Postal Operations and Services and served on the Committee on Post Office and Civil Service and the Subcommittee on Compensation and Employment.

effective promoter of responsible and realistic broadcast television and cable programming.

Through widely publicized congressional hearings he aroused the nation’s conscience and reduced violence in children’s television programming. And he advocated ethnic diversity through Affirmative Action in broadcast employment, both on and off camera and ownership.

In particular, he worked to assure that all of the characters in the media avoided ethnic stereotypes and fairly portrayed the rich diversity that makes up the American public. When the federal government began to privatize federal assets, such as Conrail, Mickey Leland successfully included legislative language that required the participation of minority investment bankers in the negotiations.

Mickey Leland’s sincere concern for ethnic equality earned him a leadership position in politics. During 1985-86, Congressman Leland served as Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) for the 99th Congress. The CBC was created in 1971 with only 13 members.

By 1987, the CBC had grown to 23 members. Leland was also a member of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) from 1976-85. He served as Chairman of the DNC’s Black Caucus from 1981-1985, and in that capacity, he served on the DNC’s Executive Committee.

World Hunger and Peace When running for re-election in 1988, Congressman Leland was quoted as saying, “This is my 10th year in Congress, and I want to go back.” He stated further, “The more influence I get, the more I can help the people of the 18th District, but also (people) throughout the country.”

Leland was becoming increasingly successful in international human rights and world hunger issues. He fought against the in-

justice of South African Apartheid, and led successful boycotts against South Africa Airways and was instrumental in obtaining a congressional override of President Reagan’s veto of economic sanctions against South Africa.

He worked endlessly to solve the problems of domestic and international hunger and malnutrition. Mickey Leland fought hard to prevent food aid from being used as a political tool. He advocated communication with all governments, even those considered enemies, in order to further humanitarian goals and supported the right of U.S. citizens to provide humanitarian assistance to civilians of any nation.

His successful initiatives expanded funding of primary health care in developing countries, including UNICEF’s child survival activities and Vitamin A programs supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Under Leland’s aegis, the Select Committee reemphasized the priority of hunger and the alleviation of poverty within the foreign assistance program of the United States.

Mickey Leland died as he had lived, on a mission seeking to help those most in need. While leading another relief mission in 1989, to an isolated refugee camp, Fugnido, in Ethiopia, which sheltered thousands of unaccompanied children fleeing the civil conflict in neighboring Sudan, Leland’s plane crashed into a mountainside in Ethiopia.

The force of the crash killed everyone aboard, including the Congressman, his chief of staff Patrice Johnson and 13 other passengers from a number of government, humanitarian and development organizations.

One Man Who Changed the World

-Mickey Leland The first three Black elected officials of African descent to serve Texas since Reconstruction, 1896 were: State Representatives Curtis Graves and Joe Lockridge and the first Black woman and Senator, Barbara Jordan.

When they left the State House and Senate in 1973, three new members join the ranks of the prestigious few men and women to serve as elected officials of color, one of these three was twenty-eight-year-old Mickey Leland.

George Thomas “Mickey�

Leland built his political reputation around issues affecting poor people as he won a state seat in 1973. Before that he was a pharmaceutical student at Texas Southern University (TSU) and this young man embraced: social injustice, rights for minorities and healthcare as the subject matters to help underserved communities in Houston that help to inspire him.

In correcting some past assumptions, I want the history about Mickey Leland from my prospective, my relationship as a childhood friend, schoolmate and staffer to be shared, making my article a bit on the personal side. Mickey and I grew up from age 2 & 3 years old, in

5th Ward, Texas. Mickey was an ordinary guy, doing ordinary things who had a special calling on his life to do good. We went to school every morning together in Mrs. Heffner carpool with her grandchildren Larry & Sonia Williams, Mickey’s brother Gaston, and my sister Rose Glenn-Moore to attend Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church and School. We all started our mornings together at Mass and in prayer, even confession on Saturdays. We all attended Catholic School until our parents transferred us to public school.

Raised in Houston’s 5th Ward, Leland was committed to providing jobs and resources to the underserved population and healthcare for the poor. While a student at TSU along with students from University of Houston, they launched free clinics in poor areas, as Mickey focused on motivating city & state officials and demanding integrity in serving poor people for those without resources by addressing healthcare issues and developing new opportunities. This effort help Mickey resolve to run for the Texas State House to serve the people he lived among, because he knew the conditions they faced daily.

In Austin, Mickey went as a nonconforming rebel. He was determined to bring about

change and he demonstrated it by entering the Capitol wearing an Afro and a vibrant dashiki, as former Congressman, State Senator & State Representative Craig Washington stated, as one of the three new members in 1973, they were a jolt to the conservative Texas body, to say the least, especially “Mickey.�

Leland remained in the state legislature until 1978, when he won Barbara Jordan’s seat in the U.S. Congress, and the issues he worked on as a State Representative, he took to capitol hill, which included his fight for social justice and the rights of underrepresented people.

While Chairperson of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), Mickey held the annual CBC conference here in Houston, it was an exciting event especially for his constituents, who for the most part was low-income and could not afford to travel to Washington to be part of the reality of his work in D. C. Given that Africa was the late Congressman’s passion, mental preparedness earned in the civil rights struggle, the African bush and his travels, helped to make him an able leader on issues as compelling as hunger.

He learned how to embrace the skills of leadership to keep hunger issues alive in Congress from his relationship with President of Tanzania, Julius Nyerere and from Nyerere book “We Must Run While They Walk�. Although, Mickey allowed others with strong leadership skills into his life, make no mistake, he certainly behaved as his own man, ruled by his own passion, while in the state legislature, as well as in Congress. Leland advocated for “Black self-pride�.

Ten years was a short period to experience the essence of Mickey Leland, who was full of life and ideas.

UNDENIABLE IMPACT Haitian Refugees - Are We Missing a Teachable Lesson?

By Coordinator of the MLK Peacekeeper Initiative While working in Social Services for the last 10 years of my employment at Harris County, I would often ask workers that qualified citizens for emergency aids such as rental and utility assistance whether they have serviced any Haitians. The answer would always be No. The Haitian immigrant story is below the radar when speaking of successful immigrant resettlement. Usually, the conversation du jour is about South Asians and Hispanics. However, a strong case can be made that in Houston, no immigrant group has been more successful than the Haitians.

In 1980, the late Congressman Mickey Leland convened a group of citizens to begin advocacy and launch a concrete

plan for Houston to receive Haitian refugees. Daily reports of human misery, drowning of men, women and children and overcrowded morgues in Miami were prominent in the media.

In behalf of this ad hoc humanitarian relief effort, Leland and the committee sent me to Miami to assess the situation. I camped in Little Haiti and was stunned by the images and testimony that I received. The visit to the morgue transfixed me.

When I returned to Houston and gave my reports, there was no hesitation about immediately providing relief.

We cooperated with Church World Services and leaders from local anchor institutions matched resources with their big hearts. Hospitals in the medical center, nursing homes through the communities, city and

state government and churches brought all hands on deck and opened their hearts and bank accounts. Through the good will of Rep. Leland and his cohorts, pillars of the community led by Ms. Hawkins began to provide housing and employment.

Many of the Haitians who ventured the high seas on vessels that were not sea- worthy have now retired from active work from the University of Texas Hospital System and the City of Houston.

Perhaps what is most memorable is that all of the Haitians pushed back strongly against food stamps and welfare. To a man and a woman, they desired the dignity of employment so that they could support their family and begin remittances to their loved ones in Haiti. Without hesitation, Haitians gladly

took unskilled jobs such as laundry and janitorial helpers, parks and recreation –flood control workers. Mosquitoes and near 100 degree temperatures were not a deterrent, only a formidable challenge that they were eager to meet.

This is all significant because of the disproportional and inequitable response to the black refugees from Haiti. For example, Cuban refugee of any hue only after to reach American soil to attain a political refugee status.

If Haitians made it to land, a new status was applied e-ntrant.

Although, they were fleeing a brutal dictatorship led by Papa Doc Duvalier, the United States argued that they were coming to these shores for economic reasons (jobs). Haitians who were intercepted on the high seas were interdicted and repatriated,

but not Cubans.

Nevertheless, Haitians have come to a nation of immigrants and have become near perfect citizens. They have successfully assimilated. These Haitians are now bullish on America and think that this country is exceptional despite its imperfections.

A Reflection from Commissioner Ellis

Mickey was a force of life: A visionary who saw the world as it was while advancing a vision of what the world could be. He saw what others could not see and believed in possibilities that stretch our imagination. He demanded things at the time that didn’t even seem possible but he put them within reach. The National Museum of African American History and Culture, which he first advanced, is a testament to that. Mickey called on us to be better, to do better.

From him, I learned that social change came not all at once but through constant and consistent action. And he was willing to do the hard work necessary to build a more fair, just and equitable system for all people. He was always the first to roll up his sleeves.

At his core, Mickey was a humanitarian, a citizen of the world who never forgot his Fifth Ward roots. Whether it was fighting poverty in our neighborhoods or ending hunger across the globe, Mickey stood with the poor, the oppressed and the marginalized.

He empowered people, he defended their rights and served as a voice for the voiceless until they could be heard on their own. He was my mentor and my friend. I miss him.

I am forever grateful for the lessons he taught me and work he did in service to others. In these dark, challenging times – where raw racism is resurgent, working families struggle to make ends meet, the vulnerable among us are dehumanized, our hard-won rights are under attack – we should look to Mickey for inspiration and guidance. And keep going. Keep fighting, not just for the people across the street but those across the world. That was Mickey’s vision, and it’s now up to us.

NAACP “2018 ELECTION”

The Young Guns vs. The Old Skool

By Gerry Monroe HOUSTON - They have a saying in Dallas called Eat Greedy.

In the City of Houston that’s what local politicians seem to do. While everyone was been caught up in the mid-term elections, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), was getting ready for its own elections. The changing of the guard is not accepted in a lot of arenas.

Bottom line, the young guns feel like the old heads dont want any smoke with them. And, with some of the things they presented to me, in a discussion we had, that just might be true.

There are allegations of misappropriation of funds, conspiracy, collusion and down right hating. Over at The NAACP, the young people want to change leadership. But, seems like the old heads are gonna put up a fight.

On Nov. 15th NAACP will be having an election of officers. The election will be at the Houston branch. The address is 2002 Wheeler, 77004. The time of the election is from 7am to 7pm.

The reason this election is so important is the guards may just

change. But, it wont be without a fight. A group of young Black adults have decided to go against the old guard of the NAACP. And, these youngsters mean business.They are passionate, educated and cut from a different cloth. To me, are the younger version of Apollo Creed. They want their seat at the table. And, they wont take no for an answer.

I had an opportunity to sit down with three of the young guns and have a serious discussion. I asked some serious questions and they shot straight from the hip. But, throughout the discussion there were serious concerns about whether the upcoming election would be a fair process.

At moment, the young guns feel the old regime is playing dirty. They feel people like Bishop James Dixon, who hasn’t attended a meeting since 2016 has been dug out of the grave to run for a board position. They also feel that Dr. James Douglas should step aside and allow new leadership to take over.

The assumption is the NAACP Houston branch is a joke. Their perception is they dont do anything for the Black community.

They have no fight in them.

Lloyd Ford Dr. James Douglas is the season veteran. Former president of the Texas Southern University.

He’s been president of the local chapter of The NAACP since Jan. 2015. He is also a board member for the Charter school organization Energized for Stem.

Dr. Douglas was one of the members of the organization that was trying to take over ten failing HISD Schools in early 2017. However, he said he was not acting as a rep of the NAACP during that time. He is

visible throughout Houston and has been very active.

Furthermore, he has been a life-long member and has no intention of leaving the organization anytime soon. Dr. Douglas told me, “He embraces younger participation within the NAACP and wishes more people would join the organization.”

Lloyd Ford is an Jack Yates alumni and college graduate. He is also an entrepreneur. He’s a visionary and his efforts in the past month have boosted membership of the Houston Chapter.

He’s relentless when it comes to working in and for the community. He’s the driving force behind the youth movement in the organization. He feels, elected the Houston Branch will become one of the most powerful chapters in the country. He is also a member of The NAACP Economic Committee.

Eddison Titus Claude Cummings is man that wears many hats. He’s all over the city of Houston.

Whether helping Mayor Turner or Holding PAC meetings, he’s everywhere. He’s well respected and known for working hard in the Black community. He’s been a member of the Local branch for many years.

Eddison Titus is a lawyer by day and revolutionary by night.

Soft spoken but, a real straight -forward guy. His work in the community most days can’t be matched. Most work he does is geared towards uplifting Black youth. He is highly-educated, ready to lift the NAACP to the next level and a member of the NAACP Economic Committee.

Secretary, Belinda Everette vs. Ciara Suseberry Belinda Everette is a longtime member of the NAACP. She leads the branch’s housing advocacy efforts and believes that civil rights is the core plat-

form of the NAACP and that housing is a civil rights issue.

Ciara Suseberry reminds me a lot of the ultimate team player.

If Martin had Rosa, the Young Guns have Ciara. Anywhere, you can find a Black issue in the community, you will find Ciara.

Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard. She does little talking but a lot of working. She too, is a member of The NAACP Economic Committee.

Now let’s get to the meat and potatoes. The young guns have decided to come out with all guns blazing. For the past few months, local meetings have been explosive. There are allegations, that rules for the coming election have been circumvented by the old regime.

Mr. Richard Bonton was disqualified from running for a board position due to his membership lapsing. Even though he renewed it, he will not be running. Bonton ran against Harold Dutton for a State Rep. seat.

The young guns claim the old heads are playing dirty games to keep board seats, that they are not using to help Black people.

They allege that, “It seems the only thing the NAACP does on the surface is host a gala to raise money to pay Executive Director Yolanda Smith’s salary.

This year’s Gala raised upwards of $700k. Yet, according to Lloyd Ford the branch has only $34K left from the event.

For years the perception has been the NAACP lacks the basic fundamental structure of strong leadership to attract members.

I personally use to attend Economic Committee meetings. I even for a quick second became the educational chair of the committee. But, when I found out James Douglas was on the same charter board, that was trying to grab Wheatley, Worthing, Kashmere and the other 7 schools; I respectfully resigned my position.

I fully understand that Dr. Douglas was doing this as a charter board member, not as President of the NAACP Houston Branch. The National office of the NAACP does not support charter schools. But, the local President sits on a charter board.

This action alone had Black Houston screaming he should resign his position.

There was also a video sent to me of an irate young Black lady that ran into a classroom at TSU screaming someone had sexually assaulted her. I asked Dr. Douglas was she referring to him? He did verify, that it was his classroom. But that she wasn’t referring to him. He reassured me that he’s never sexually assaulted anyone in his life.

After that I received an audio recording of State Senator Borris Miles talking to one of the young guns. On this tape Senator Miles makes some shocking allegations that the NAACP has been on the take for over 30 years. The Senator even names names. Now due to the fact that I’ve yet to speak to Senator Miles I won’t name these people.

But, it it is definitely Senator Miles on the tape. During the conversation Senator Miles tries to explain it’s not the Young Guns time to take over leadership. Their knuckles will end up bloody and they won’t win anyway.

Here’s a question. Why does Borris Miles give a dam who is on the board of the local NAACP? Why would he make those allegations? Either way, the Young Guns have smoke.

The young guns also allege, that a building they wanted to use for the Economic Committee was taken from them without cause.

Dr. Douglas said the youngster didn’t want to pay the utilities for the building.

Lloyd Ford said that’s a flat out lie. They agreed to pay the

utilities but, were denied the building. Lastly, Lloyd Ford built a website for the NAACP. He was the website administrator. This was agreed upon by the local office. Yet, he was sued by the local branch for putting material on the site that was not authorized by the local branch. Mr. Ford has stressed him and the Young Guns never had a problem with the local branch until they decided to run for board positions.

Bottom line, the young regime feel if they never ran for board positions, they would not be having any of these problems. I say let them run, make it a fair election process. I have decided to be a poll watcher on election day to make sure the election is on the up and up.

The Houston Branch of The NAACP is one of the oldest NAACP branches in the country.

During the riots in the 60’s the branch was front line.

This is why the old regime embraces the younger people.

The revolution has to be fought with young people on the front line. The our our communities marines. But the organization that supplies our marines is ran by a 5-Star General past his prime. Their artilliary is old and outdated. When an organization has an election and only 29 votes are cast some thing is wrong. This happened in the last election. Only 29 votes were cast. This election will be in the 100’s. And most of the new members were recruited by The young guns.

Now if they are educated and can increase membership why not give them a shot? If Senator Miles can try to talk them down, I’m gonna talk them up.

I’m an old man that makes a difference in this city. Yet, I fight battles daily by myself. Imagine if I had help. Don’t think Because Lloyd is young he can’t be a dynamic President. Look at

Bishop James Dixon what Just happened in the Mid Term elections. Youth, women and vetrans stole a lot of Senate and Congress seats. The kids can make it happen. Around the world there is a growing interest in youth and politics. Some political groups are changing to respond to the growing number of young people who want to affect the political system.

Political ideologies appealing to youth that were once considered “fringe” beliefs are becoming mainstreamed, and more young people are associating themselves with non-popular political parties.

More young people than ever before are actually becoming engaged in local community campaigns and other political activities. Youth can change the world through politics by becoming actively, meaningfully and substantially involved throughout political parties and beyond.

After 12, 14, 17 or 21 years of being told their voices don’t matter in politics, young people may need inspiration to become engaged. Never in history have children and youth been seen or treated as serious political actors; given the opportunity, they will be. Inspiration from stories, parables, biographies and other sources can help prepare and sustain youth in politics.“We

must fullfill our obligations to youth.

The of Action for Youth asks Governments to consider the contributions of young persons on all policies affecting them. Governments must honor this commitment.

They must also increase the financial, education and technical support made available to young people…It is high time that we stopped viewing our young people as part of the problem and started cultivating their promise and potential.
