Bernard A. Harris, Jr., Astronaut and President of the Harris Foundation, graduated from Sam Houston High School, San Antonio, in 1974.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Houston, a Master of Medical Science from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, a Master of Business Administration from the University of Clear Lake and a Doctorate of Medicine from Texas Tech University School of Medicine. He completed a Residency in Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic, a National Research Council Fellowship in Endocrinology at the NASA Ames Research Center and trained as a Flight Surgeon at the Aerospace School of Medicine, Brooks Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is also a licensed private pilot and certified scuba diver.

He holds several faculty appointments including Associate Professor in Internal Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch and Assistant Professor at Baylor College of Medicine. Additionally, he is the author and co-author of numerous scientific publications.

Know Better and Do Better

“An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.”

-Benjamin Franklin want to start this article with a question. How involved are you in your child’s education? In today’s society, I don’t think we take advantage of the educational opportunities available to our children. There are many factors which I think contribute to this such as parents utilizing the education system as a babysitter, the parents may have multiple jobs and may not have time to fully focus on their child’s education, or maybe because the parents are simply not informed of what is available for their child. Whatever the case may be, your child needs you to pay attention, be involved, and be present.

As a parent, it is our responsibility to make sure that our child’s needs are taken care of.

This includes making sure that they are receiving a quality education that will help prepare them to be a productive citizen in the world. The issue is that our children are still falling behind. We have to do better as parents, and do better as a community to bring them to their fullest potential.

There was a time when Black people risked their lives trying to learn how to read and write, but today, it seems as if we have “come too far” and have forgotten the struggles our ancestors once faced. During slavery, slaves were not allowed to learn how to read and write because

it was better to keep them ignorant. If you’re ignorant, then you don’t know any better, and if you don’t know any better, then you can’t do any better. We owe it to our ancestors and we owe it to our children to do better.

The National Center for Education Statistics conducted a study in 2015-2016 regarding a high school graduation cohort.

The ACGR (Adjusted Cohort Graduation Rate) is the percentage of public high school freshmen who graduate with a regular diploma within 4 years of starting 9th grade.

Some of their findings found “American Indian/Alaska Native (72 percent), Black (76 percent) and Hispanic (79 percent) public high school students were below the national average of 84 percent. The ACGRs for White (88 percent) and Asian/Pacific Islander (91 percent) students were above the national average.” For me, below the national average is unacceptable. So how can we change this?

I believe it always has to start at home. Parents have to be involved in their child’s education.

They have to go to meetings, be informed of what their child is being taught, and most importantly, ask questions and speak up if something is not right.

In addition, parents should get their children involved in different extracurricular activities so that they can explore their interest and determine what it is they may want to do in life. Many don’t realize that the younger days contribute to a lot of how a child develops.

When they are little children, they follow what has been set in front of them. They soak up everything that is around them. So parents, you have to be a great model for them, and be there for them. This means not just showing up, but being present as well.

We MUST Understand

A Socially Engineered People “We Africans in America have been socially engineered to reject our past, and far too many of us live in a state of suspended animation. We deny the historical realities confronting us daily. Too many of us mistakenly believe that the past has no bearing on the present and is unrelated to the future. Thus, we have been conditioned to live our lives disconnected from cultural values, principles, and ideals– essential for peaceful living.”

- Anthony T. Browder hese words have always remained dear to my heart. For they explain in part, some of the reason my wife and I started out on the journey of educating and serving the Black community decades ago.

We MUST Understand our past has the power to dictate our present and control our future and those who deny this concept do themselves a grave injustice by not facing reality. In order to gain an understanding of what I am conveying, I think it is imperative that the terms, “socially engineered” and “state of suspended animation” are defined.

Socially engineered is defined as, “the use of centralized planning in an attempt to manage social change and regulate the future development and behavior of a society.” While, “state of suspended animation” refers to, “inducement of a temporary cessation or decay of main body functions, including the brain, to a hypo-metabolic state in order

to try to preserve its mental and physiological capabilities.”

Although these elements do not apply to the Black community as a whole, the truth is it affects more of us than it ought to.

A lot of people hide from who they are, not realizing you can’t change who you are or where you come from. People who know of me and know me, are aware I let nobody make me forgot who I am and where I come from!

I state this because, there are so many members amongst us who are phonied carbon copies of an image and personality which does not belong to us.

Too many African-Americans in today’s society are just trying to blend in with other cultures and trends of other races, just to fit in and be accepted. This creates a problem for many when they go out and try to attain positions, power and acceptance and are met with the same realization, many of us already know; there is something about this Blackness that will never be understood or accepted.

But, it goes back to Browder’s thoughts which suggest, “we have been socially engineered to reject our past” which causes many to “live in a state of suspended animation.” Meaning, these things were all done by design.

We MUST Understand, when a culture or race of people has no knowledge of their history, or in our case, when that history has been white-washed to paint a picture that our past struggle and history in this country has no bearing on the present; then it creates a state of suspended animation. Many of us want to believe that we have overcome and we have not. We MUST NOT forget what has been done, because what was done in the past is repeating itself in real-time today. - AANI

By Chelsea Davis-Bibb, M.Ed. HOUSTON - On December 23, 2013, the life Tiffany Adams once knew was never the same again. After a tragic car accident left Tiffany a double amputee, she had to find purpose in life again. Prior to the accident, she was a stylist and a wardrobe consultant, and was very fortunate to have clients all over the world from celebrities, to everyday individuals with everyday careers.

However, the accident really took a toll on her as the limb loss caused “significant disruptions” in many aspects of her life. “I found myself really shutting down and going through depression,” expressed Tiffany.

After the accident, she felt as if she didn’t understand life and her purpose anymore. She had many feelings of shock, anger and frustration, which are normal feelings to have in those initial feelings of grief. She further stated, “I saw myself in a place of isolation and lack of control and facing a ton of challenges. I was feeling a sense of hopelessness.”

Even though she was devastated about her loss, she had a choice to make. She could either drown in sorrow, or find meaning and purpose in life again.

Slowly, she started to pick herself up again. It wasn’t easy, but she knew she had to “see the sunshine again.”

After she started feeling better, she became involved in the amputee coalition. This helped her to move towards accepting her new life. She stated, “Until you accept where you are and who you are in life, nothing is going to fall in place. After I started working towards acceptance, I started wanting to get up, get

dressed and put on my makeup.”

In addition, Tiffany slowly started to create goals that she could work towards. She mentioned rehabilitation was very influential to her recovery and helped to find a way to maintain her optimism. One thing that Tiffany would like people to take away from her story is the learning of how to deal with challenges, and how people can become better through those challenges. She made it known that in order to do that, you have to understand purpose.

Fashion is something that has been purposeful in her life. She expressed, “Fashion for me is

dark time. “I want people to understand that when you have a creative mind, there are so many different ways to find healing and hope, and to be able to gain purpose in life,” she expressed.

With a new feeling in life, she started a nonprofit organization in 2018 called Saint Tiffany’s, which was to “house her fashion advocacy and travel endeavors.” What started her advocacy work was going out and doing things, which led to her realizing there were more challenges to being a disabled woman. These challenges included, things not being easily accessible, or doors not wide enough for people in

One of her goals is to provide support through awareness so people with disabilities have the same opportunities and rights as everyone else in society. She stated, “They require independent support to ensure they are able to live their lives to the fullest extent. This can be achieved by: receiving the right health care, access to facilities and the community, a social life, employment and educational opportunities, housing, and the ability to make their own choices and needs and opinions known.”

Although her advocacy is targeted towards disabled people, Tiffany wants to help everyone.

Her mission is to continue to advocate, share and motivate individuals who are having

challenges with life to continue to seek therapy, counseling and seek those things which will allow freedom and allow you to experience your true journey.

In addition, she wants people to understand the importance of reaching out, advocacy, love, and hope. “My goal is to research and to find ways to build awareness through these different organizations, and through my organization, and to work with individuals who are also on board to help rebuild lives so that they are able to see the best potential way of life and way of living again.”

Fashion was Tiffany’s escapism. It is what healed her and what helped her through her

wheelchairs, or places not providing a ramp. She thought to herself, “this has to be a struggle for everyone who is disabled.” These challenges helped spark her interest, passion and concerns for advocacy work.

Therefore, Tiffany has many goals she wants to achieve. She made it known having goals to work towards, particularly during recovery is imperative.

A veteran astronaut for over nineteen years, he has logged more than 438 hours and traveled over 7.2 million miles in space. He served as Vice President and Chief Scientist of SPACEHAB, Inc., an innovative space commercialization company, where he directed the company’s space science business. He also served as Vice President of Business Development for Space Media, Inc., an Informatics company, establishing an e-commerce initiative that is now part of the United Nations’ education program.

Dr. Harris is currently Chief Executive Officer and Managing Partner of Vesalius Ventures, Inc., a venture capital firm, that invests in early to mid-stage Healthcare technologies and companies. He is also the Founder of the Harris Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports math/science education and crime prevention programs for America’s youth.

Faith, Fear and their Relationship

Matthew 14:25-31 HOUSTON - I have a fear! The name of my fear is Acrophobia. When I discuss my fear of heights, someone in the room will usually raise their hand and quote II Timothy 1:7 “God did not give us a spirit of fear”.

I am often quick to remind such people, God did not give us diabetes or high blood pressure, but they exist. Many people live with physical ailments like diabetes and high blood pressure and if these ailments go untreated, they become life threatening.

However, if managed properly, they will not prevent you from living a long and productive life. Fear, a spiritual ailment, if not treated properly is a threat to our spiritual health. The good news is, just as we are able to manage our physical ailments, our spiritual ailments, such as

fear, are also manageable.

A display of fear in the eyes of many Christians demonstrates a lack of faith and we know that a lack of faith displeases God (Hebrews 11:6). In today’s scripture as the disciples obeyed the command given to them by Jesus Christ, they encountered fear. Jesus did not rebuke the disciples because they became fearful.

On the contrary, Jesus comforted them when they displayed fear (v. 27 be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid). What is the relationship between faith and fear and how can our fears be managed?

Antidote for Fear Fear serves a purpose. Its purpose is to remind us to walk by faith and not by sight (II Corinthians 5:7). Oftentimes, we focus on the negative aspects of fear and ignore the opportunity fear presents to strengthen our relationship with Christ. With that in mind, the cure for fear is faith.

Native to Houston, Texas, he attended college at Texas A&M University Kingsville. It was while studying there that he began doing comedy. I can really see how things that happen in class on a daily basis can be added in his material each time he takes the stage. So glad we got a chance to meet him in person thanks to Jennifer Jermany. Our interview went something like this…..please enjoy as we get a glimpse into the life and times of Eddie B.

The Interview

Trinity: What it is like being a

comedian?

Eddie B: It is a fun ride being a comedian, and it’s scary sometimes being on the stage. But, you get used to it after a while.

Trinity: What was it like being a teacher?

Eddie B: It was fun because I wanted to be the teacher that I’d never had.

He was described as the fun but strict teacher that exposes you to a whole new world.

Trinity: What made you want to be a comedian?

Eddie B: I didn’t aspire to become a comedian. I just enjoyed cracking jokes all the time.

While in college, he decided to get on stage.

Trinity: How did you get to where you are now?

Eddie B: I don’t know . . . God. Because a lot of comedians have worked their entire lives to try to make it here, this must be God’s plan.

Trinity: Would you say you’re happier as a comedian than you were as a teacher?

Eddie B: I like the fact that I can put teacher and comedian together. It’s the best of both worlds. I had some good days as a teacher, but, now I have more freedom than I had as a teacher.

Trinity: What do you feel is the best part of your job now?

Eddie B: Meeting all the different types of teachers and working with other people all around the world.

Eddie B. met his fellow comedian, Jennifer, during a show. He added, “She stood out more than anything, and we started working together.”

Preparing Texas for the Future

W

ith a death toll of at least 103 people with a price tag of $125 billion in damage, Hurricane Harvey was the most devastating and costly natural disaster the State of Texas has ever endured. Although Hurricane Harvey occurred two years ago, the impacted areas are still in recovery.

A report commissioned by Governor Greg Abbott last year warned that changing climate will only make disasters like Hurricane Harvey more likely in the future. Despite this, the Legislature has failed to adequately prepare for natural disasters and has consequently put the lives of Texans at risk. The 86th Texas Legislature must develop comprehensive strategies to address the devastating effects of a changing climate to ensure that the state is prepared for natural disasters of this scale in the future.

Since 1980, Texas has experienced ninety-five extreme weather events, more than any other state in the nation. The smallest of these events caused $1 billion in damage, with many costing much more. Whether it be blizzards in North Texas, tornadoes in the Panhandle, hurricanes on the Gulf Coast, or droughts like that of the 2010-2013 crisis that spanned the entire state, extreme weather events affect every corner of Texas.

These recurring disasters can take a toll on Texas’ leading industries, such as agriculture. Drought conditions will lead to a 10% decrease in Texas’ agricultural yields by the year 2100. But we do not have to wait until then to see the effects of a changing climate.

In 2011, the driest year in Texas history, the Great Plains region directly lost $10 billion in agricultural yields due to weather conditions. According to a United States Department of Agriculture report, these droughts will only get longer and drier, making Texas susceptible to some of the worst droughts in the world.

Texas is also affected by sea levels rising due to a changing climate. In certain areas of the Gulf Coast, more than a football field of land is lost every hour due to erosion from the rising waters. Not only do property values decrease as homes are lost to a shrinking coast, but the tourism, farming and fishing industry on the coast are also irreparably harmed.

The 86th Texas Legislature needs to take every possible step to ensure that the state is prepared for future severe weather events. That is why I have authored House Bill 100, a bill that would require state agencies to include information about weather patterns, water availability, climate variability and other key environmental information collected by our taxpayer-funded state climatologist in their biennial strategic plans. I filed versions of this bill during previous legislative sessions, and in 2015, the bill made it all the way to the House floor, where it died. I hope that in the aftermath of the costliest natural disaster in our state’s history, Hurricane Harvey, the Legislature will finally pass this common sense measure.
