George Washington Carver honored with national monument. - 1951

Mollie Taylor Stevenson, Jr. HOUSTON - Mollie Taylor Stevenson, Jr. is a native Houstonian rancher, cowgirl and historian. She is the daughter of deceased Mollie Taylor Stevenson, Sr., a Fisk graduate and Ben Stevenson, 1930’s Tuskegee University football legend. Stevenson is a 1963 graduate of Jack Yates High School and attended Texas Southern University as a business major from 1963-1967.

She spent fifteen years as a professional model in Houston, New York and Kansas City, MO before she returned to home to live on the family-owned 150year-old working ranch (where she was raised). It is one of the oldest Black -owned ranches in the country.

Stevenson’s great grandmother, Ann Taylor was purchased as a slave for E. R. Taylor, (the White son of a major land baron). Together they had six children who inherited the land that the family currently owns.Today, Stevenson and three of her siblings live on the premises. One other sister Barbara Marshall, a retired college professor, lives near the ranch property.

The takedown of Joe Biden

T

his is the way that I was struck by the takedown of Joe Biden by Senator Booker and Senator Harris. It was an unprincipled takedown. Biden might not have been paying attention to the admonition of the referee to protect himself, nevertheless, it was a foul and low blow that came from teammates.

Joe Biden was right to express that his choice of words about Senator Eastland and Thurmond were unfortunate but were not uttered with the intent to praise racists.

I am a baby boomer, growing up in Louisiana

that was ruled by a succession of segregationist’s governors. Of course, the state Senators were Dixiecrat segregationists. These Dixiecrats had an outsized influence on the Democratic Party at the time of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. They were defeated by one of their own, Lyndon Baines Johnson. Johnson once referred to the 64 Civil Rights Act as the “ N “ bill. Johnson flipped after two decades of supporting segregation. This is an example of a leader evolving on a major policy issue.

POTUS Lyndon Johnson changed when he was caught in the vise grip of history. The movement for democratic rights, led by SNCC, CORE and SCLC was unrelenting in forcing the country to abandon its support for segregation. In order to pass the 64 Civil Rights Act, President Johnson had to reach across the aisle. 80 percent of Republicans and 66 percent of Dems voted for the 64 Act.

One of the Senators that Joe Biden spoke of was the hopeless, James Eastland, Dem-Miss. Eastland was entrenched, firmly committed to the old order.

James Eastland was the voice of the White South.

He was righteously regarded as the arch villain of the civil rights movement.

On a positive note, Eastland supported strengthening the Social Security Administration. He also assisted with providing pressure on President Nixon to resign during the Watergate crisis.

Let us remember that the hallowed rule of law was under attack as the nation drifted toward a constitutional crisis. President Nixon had thrown down the gauntlet to insist that he was not a crook and started a mantra that he was above the law because he was President.

LBJ and had to simultaneously work to change the oppressive racial order and work with its repre-

sentatives to forge forward thinking policy.

As a Black Power advocate during the 1960’s, I understood that the people that were in the Dixie statehouses were in control of essential goods and services and that pragmatism was more intelligent than purity.

Busing was a tool employed to bring about racial balance. Busing was a necessary evil that was employed to bring about equal education between the victims of institutionalized racism and the beneficiaries of that inimical policy. In the State of California, Berkley citizens never faced the mayhem visited on peaceful Black school kids in the Deep South.

My uncles and aunts migrated to California in the 1950’s in order to flee segregation. In Berkeley, voluntary busing was a lot different from forced busing. Again, Berkeley California was not Boston Mass during the time of

busing.

We salute Kamala Harris and the children that participated in this racial equity experiment. We salute your courage for having your eye on the prize.

Nevertheless, busing was a gallant attempt to repair a broken system and achieve racial balance, but it did not work. We have as much segregation in public education in 2019 as we did in 1969.

What is lacking in the debate about race among the Presidential Candidates is consideration of condition, time and place.

Without context, one will not be able to understand that tactics had to be adjusted to real conditions.

For most of the 1960’s, segregationists controlled the goods and services necessary for the good life. These vile segregationists controlled the instruments of force and violence, the judiciary and the ability to work and feed your family.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR In Response to Volume 24 Issue 15 (Aldine ISD: Can’t We All Just Get Along?)

I have read and kept up with the information you have shared with your readers regarding the problems Dr. Latonya Goffney has encountered with members of the board. Thank you for printing the truth. As an employee of the district for the past 28 years, I am and so many others are excited about the direction she is taking this district. Finally, someone with an agenda all about educating our kids and treating people fairly. Not for their own personal satisfaction and name recognition.

Please do not stop exposing the injustices that remains on the board. Since the publishing of many articles, Dr. Viola Garcia & Rose Avalos wants everyone to think that they are supporting Dr. Goffney. They are putting on this façade. Especially Dr. Garcia, she is trying to maintain the façade until the election, hoping she will be reelected to maintain her position on the national level. We need a strong candidate to run against her, she is using the board for her own personal agenda. She remains in constant contact with former Superintendent Dr. Bamberg, keeping up dissention and she actually thinks she is fooling everyone, but we all know nothing has changed with her. Dr. Garcia is soliciting candidates to run for the soon to be open position held now by Patricia Bourgeois, in an effort to stack the board with someone who will go along with her agenda.

She wants nothing but to sabotage Dr. Goffney’s agenda. Her effort is to retain and maintain some of the old policies of racism, favoritism, mistreatment, and disrespect that we encountered from former Superintendent Wanda Bamberg, that’s why all confidential matters that are discussed amongst the board is communicated to Dr. Bamberg by Dr. Garcia. Violation of the oath.

Our advice to Dr. Bamberg is, “GET A LIFE & STAY OUT OF ALDINE’S BUSINESS.” You have done enough damage to Aldine ISD and there is no need to list all the damage you have done; you are clearly aware of it. Let it be known that Dr. Goffney has done more in one year, than you attempted to do in the ten years you held the position. As for you Dr. Garcia, if this agenda is not for you and you have a problem doing what is right, LEAVE. Concerned Employee, Aldine ISD

s I reflect over Our journey in America; I can’t help but surmise that while WE have advanced in some ways, WE have regressed in others.

I will never be able to understand how slaves who had nothing, but a skill, was able to build wealth after their release from oppression. Majority of them had no formal education or nothing of value, except a trade.

We know they at least had this much, because they built the very foundation of these United States.

However, once their freedom was declared they ended up owning acres of land, establishing businesses and making a way out of no way for their families - with no real education.

So, I am confused in this

present-day society. With allllll of the education and scholastic achievements WE have achieved, WE BOUT TO STARVE TO DEATH. Too many of US are walking around ego-tripping with a piece of paper and don’t own nothing - riding around styling and profiling in vehicles that don’t even belong to US; living in homes we will never own and associating with folks who will always see US as 3/5 a person, if that.

Once again, at the root of it all lies integration. It’s sad to say, but it seems as a race of people WE were more productive in society when we were isolated. Prior to integration, there was no such thing as a disgraceful job for Blacks. If it was legal and paid real money that WE could pay our bills with and take care of our families with, WE didn’t mind working it. Nowadays, some of US are too good to work at certain places - we might be ‘Starvin’ like Marvin’, but that job is beneath us. Because WE have been exposed to those who don’t look like US who have that option. But the key is THEY DON’T LOOK LIKE US. Meanwhile, our Brown brothers and sisters steady coming to the States with no paper (degree), but they dam sho got a trade and they using it to clean house clear across America. Here it is, we finally got the paper (degree), but WE unemployable. Now, ain’t that a real Mother For Ya?!?!?!?!

Dear Democrats: Beat Trump, Not Each Other

T

he smart thing for Democratic National Committee Chair Tom Perez to do is send this terse note to all Democratic presidential contenders before, I repeat before, the next scheduled Democratic candidate’s debate in Detroit, July 30-31. It would read: “Our goal is to beat Trump, not beat up on each other.”

There’s a special urgency in sending this note.

Democratic contender Kamala Harris took a hard shot at rival Joe Biden at the first debate about his opposition back in the Paleolithic age to bussing. This quickly rocket launched Harris from the middle of the Democratic presidential pack to one of the top tier Democratic contenders. But that poses a grave temptation and peril.

The temptation is that if the personal attack on Biden worked for Harris then other Democratic contenders that are scratching and clawing to elbow their way up the ladder might think it can work for them too. The

grave peril in this tact is that it could ignite the kind of internal war, feud, and grudge match that can benefit only one person: Trump. This wouldn’t be the first time that presidential contenders from one party gave the opposition made in political heaven attack points by beating up on each other, There’s the oft cited example of Hillary Clinton supposedly questioning Obama’s American birth.

Though the accusation against Clinton was thoroughly debunked, Trump ran with it with his birther bash of Obama.

After Harris ripped Biden, Trump wasted no time in tweeting a back pat of Harris for hammering him. Not that he’d need her to slam him or any other serious Democratic foe. But giving the proven master of personal digs, putdown and insults an unexpected gift of an attack point is beyond foolhardy.

This may seem a small point with some polls showing any of the top tier Democratic contenders beating Trump in a head to head showdown.

But these polls at this early stage of the game are absolutely worthless.

Beating Trump, a sitting president, will be a Herculean task under the optimal conditions, and throwing taint on other Democrats is anything but optimal.

Trump got his tax heist

for the rich and corporations through Congress, and as an extra bonus, brought his long-held dream of dumping the Affordable Care Act closer to reality when the Senate tacked on a provision to the bill wiping out the individual mandate.

When the markets took another tick up, he crowed even louder that he was the man who brought the good times rolling to America. As always, he did all this with the sheepish connivance of much of the mainstream media, which is always off to the races in giving round-the-clock coverage to his self-serving, vapid tweets as if they were the word from the Mount.

He’s got an untied GOP and Republican national Committee behind him with a king’s ransom of campaign cash to burn, a hit machine second to none attack, and endless voter suppression ploys in place in the key electoral states.

He’s got the continuing love fest that his devout base has with him. True, polls show that his overall approval ratings consistently wallow under forty percent, buried in the polling fine print is the numbers that mean the most to him and the GOP. That’s Republican voters.

The overwhelming majority of whom back him. But more importantly, his loyal base supporters are top heavy in the six states that

will decide who sits in the Oval Office.

He won just enough of their votes in 2016 to defeat Clinton. He’ll almost certainly get most of them back again. According to exit polls, a stunningly low percentage of them consider themselves liberal.

Biden the tough sounding male Democrat centrist supposedly is the Democrat best able to peel off some of those votes.

This has always been an iffy, untested assumption at best. If more Democratic contenders use the Harris tact and go after him that assumption will blow up in smoke.

Democratic progressive contenders Sanders, Warren and Harris bank that they can offset Trump’s fervid base by firing up young, Black Hispanic and suburban women voters to storm the polls. Possibly, but that’s also an untested assumption. If there are scars and bruises on Democratic contenders after a beat down of each other, this won’t do much to assure that happens.

There’s plenty of meaty stuff for Democratic contenders to talk about without finger pointing each other for their alleged faults, flaws, and sins of the past. The thing never to forget is that Trump has a lot of ammunition in his run back to the White House. The Democrats would be wise not to give him anymore.

HOUSTON - It is no secret that America has always had two shades of color - Black and White. American history in times past classified any individual of any race, who was not Black or White. Freedom as it relates to the American culture is no different.

U.S. History clearly reflects this.

For the Fourth of July declared “all men are free and equal”, but WE didn’t get our so-called democracy until Juneteenth. But, even with that, Blacks still were not completely free and equal.

The beginning of understanding Shades of Freedom in American society, rests in two historical dates in the nation’s history, July 4, 1776 and June 19, 1865.

According to History. com, John Adams was one of the first to encourage the celebration of Independence Day. Although he wrote to his wife, Abigail that it should be celebrated on July 2; the manner of celebration he proposed is one which is still regarded by millions of Americans today.

He declared events such as: “Pomp and Parade, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells,

becues, concerts, parades, family reunions and other leisure activities have become a customary tradition in honor of America’s independence.

But, wait... Who exactly benefitted from America’s Independence Day; especially when Blacks were still in bondage and under oppression?

The first documented commemoration of Independence Day was in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777. Nearly a century later Congress declared Independence Day a federal holiday. In 1941, an amendment was added to grant a paid holiday to all federal employees.

Since that time, the Fourth of July has remained a celebratory holiday for Americans everywhere. Fireworks, bar

and captivity all at the same time???

One Shade of Freedom: July 4, 1776 (Independence Day)

Amid the Revolutionary War, colonists began talk of gaining independence from Great Britain. Although initially there was not a complete mutual agreement with other colonists in the States, eventually a unified consensus was established.

Hence, the birth of American freedom was voted in on July 2, 1776 by the Continental Congress.

On July 4 of that same year, delegates from the 13 colonies signed the Declaration of Independence, drafted by Thomas Jefferson. That date marked the official independence of America. That was, at least for one shade of the country’s inhabitants.

Another Shade of Freedom: June 19, 1865 (Juneteenth)

“The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States.”

- Declaration of Independence Being victims of such control as absolute tyranny from Great Britain, ignited a strong desire for freedom from Britain amongst American colo

nists.

It is from experiencing this ill-treatment that the Declaration of Independence also declares, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Anyone who has any type of American history knowledge, understands that this statement is an oxymoron at best, when considering Juneteenth.

Furthermore, one may wonder... Why one shade of people would subject another shade to the similar ill-treatment they struggled to break free from? For those wondering minds, the answer is simple. There are two shades of freedom in America.

While one shade of America began enjoying freedom on July 4, 1776, it would take over a century later before the other shade would even touch freedom’s hem. Africans in America who had been enslaved since as early as 1619 did not see a sign of freedom until January 1, 1863.

It was on this date that President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. The document confirmed that all individuals enslaved in Confederate states in rebellion against the Union “shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free.”

However, it took over two years before slaves in Texas got the news. On June 19, 1865, a native of

New York, General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston Bay with an entourage of troops. Granger stood on the balcony of Ashton Villa and read aloud General Order No. 3, “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.”

Although the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed, it could be fully enforced until after the war. Nevertheless, Texans marked this day in history as Juneteenth. It became the official day of the abolition of slavery in the South.

Quite naturally, Juneteenth was only a pivotal point in history for one shade of people. As such, it never received the widespread recognition and attention as the Fourth of July.

Even though Juneteenth happened, it was 1979 before the first American state (Texas), even regarded it as an official holiday.

To this day, only 39 states recognize Juneteenth. But, to most southern African-Americans it marks a day of the truest freedom Our Shade will ever know.

Thus, I will close with the words of Frederick Douglass the abolitionist.

In his 1852 Independence Day oration he rhetorically asks, “What, to the American slave, is your 4th of July?”

He then answered, “a day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is constant victim.”

LIVING LEGEND

Daughter and Mother Mollie T. Stevenson, Jr. & Sr. The youngest sibling, deceased, Major Stevenson, was a long-time esteemed master educator and historian. Stevenson is married to Elicious Scott whom she met on a trail ride in 1993 and married one year later in a historic western-African wedding on the ranch grounds. Her hobbies are entertaining, cooking and craft making.

In 1988, Stevenson assisted her mother in establishing The American Cowboy Museum in Houston. The mission of the museum is to “preserve the multicultural history of the West”.

Thanks to the Stevensons, thousands of visitors and school children have learned about contributions of African-Americans, Hispanics, Native-Americans and women’s history and culture of the West. The museum conducts heritage tours, picnics, a Historical Traveling Exhibit with oral presenters and a petting zoo.

Stevenson and her mother are the first living African-Americans inducted in The National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame in Fort Worth. She is a member of the Diamond “L” Riding and Roping Club, volunteers for the Black Land Owner’s Association and FFA.

HOUSTON - Renea Gray is President & Executive Director of Helping Hands to the Community. The brochure reads, “The storm has passed, but the road to recovery is just beginning.” And to a lot of Hurricane Harvey victims that is the dog-on truth! Even I know some people that are still trying to repair and reconstruct damages caused by Harvey’s devastation.

One of Helping Hands’ programs, the I Still Need Help campaign is a callto-action to raise money for hurricane survivors in order to help them recover.

With the support of corporations, small businesses and individuals, Helping Hands will provide direct services and resources to families still in need of help.

Not only that, Helping Hands was developed to help seniors, the underserved and disabled and the veteran populations.

The program was established to assist families which are regularly disqualified from other programs. The underserved population and anyone who receives TANF, WIC,

Food Stamps, CHIP, SSI or are on a fixed income are eligible for the program and are assessed prior to participation.

This is important because after Hurricane Harvey many families were disqualified by other agencies. Some families received damage to their homes and were unable to make the necessary repairs. Therefore, Helping Hands has home improvement donations that will assist these families.

Many donations include paint, plumbing, electrical and other home repair items needed as a gateway to people in recovery – all free of charge.

You know the Energizer – Pink Bunny that say, “It keeps on going and going and going?” Well Helping Hands to the Community… just keeps on giving and giving and giving. To that regard, they also offer a free Apprenticeship Training Program called, Training for A Career Without Tuition.

So, I would say, with all of this Renea Gray is doing exactly what her program was designed to do and that is truly helping communities. Recently, I was

COMMUNITY able to interview the brilliant woman behind the program; which not only helps Harris County, but also Fort Bend, Montgomery and Waller counties and surrounding areas.

The Interview TJ: Thank you for agreeing to speak with me. I’m sure our readers will be very interested in finding out more about your organization. First of all, can you tell me what led to the creation of your organization?

Gray: Well, I started this organization at the age of 22. My team and I started out feeding the homeless.

Over the years, we expanded to chair different programs and services as it relates to the whole family, because we know they did not become homeless overnight…

We believe in empowerment, we believe inspiring, lifting and re-building families. So, we give you the necessary tools so that you can be a part of that process. That’s why we always use the word, ‘Yes’.

We very seldom use the word No. Because when you tell a person no, they already see it – they’re already living it. You say let’s work on it together.

That gives them hope.

TJ: What are some of the ways you can help people of our community receive help?

Gray: Right now, we’re full-time Case Management Agency. We service the whole family by providing a case management plan that gets you from point A to point B or wherever you’re trying to go.

Whether it’s getting a new

start in life, a new career, going back to school, getting re-employed or whatever those choices may be to lead you into your new step…

We provide temporary and permanent housing.

We also use the SRO programs for people that are low income. We network with other agencies that provide vouchers and housing vouchers. We also work with the senior, disabled and elderly communities. The veteran community is being populated, growing day by day so we definitely provide services for those men and women.

We also have trade classes like; electrical, plumbing, AC and garage door repair. For clarification, it’s only workshops.

We are not a school; we don’t give you credits, and we’re not state or federally-funded. These classes are centered around people who want to go to work, and not necessarily go to school.

We’re also opening up a food pantry, so that we will be able to serve the entire city of Houston. We

do not serve by zip code, so everyone is welcome to come to the food pantry…

TJ: On your website, you point out that churches and non-profits can partner with you to receive a monthly supply of goods to help the community around them. Can you explain how that works?
