Honorable Albert Edwards HOUSTON - State Representative, Hon. Albert Ely Edwards was born in Houston on March 19, 1937.

Edwards is the sixth child out of the sixteen children born to Reverend E. L. Edwards, Sr. and Josephine Radford Edwards. He graduated from Phyllis Wheatley High School and attended Texas Southern University, earning a Bachelor’s degree in 1966.

At the age of forty-one, Edwards entered politics and was elected to the Texas State Legislature from Houston’s House District 146. His first major goal was to ensure the establishment of a holiday that recognized the emancipation of slavery.

In 1979, legislation recognizing Juneteenth Day, initiated by Edwards, passed the Texas State Legislature and was signed into law. Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is an annual holiday in fourteen states of the United States.

Celebrated on June 19th, it commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas. While serving in the legislature, Edwards also founded his own real estate company.

Though deeply involved with local issues, Edwards remained active in many issues outside the Texas State Legislature.

Dear Editor, Thank you for writing the recent article about Aldine ISD. For the first time in years, I am excited about a Superintendent. I am so glad that Dr. Goffney was selected because I feel that she CAN do the work!

But from the information in the article the questions is, Will THEY allow her to do what she is known for doing.....great work?

You would think that a panel of educated, professional people would want what is best for the students. If not, why are you on the Board? Are you on the Board because you are bored? nly a week remains in the 86th Legislative Session at the Texas Capitol. Even in this small time frame, lawmakers must be vigilant as ever because the best and

The Board is for people that care about the students and the wellbeing on the entire district. From my perspective, there are about two to three people on the board that hold a position for the right reasons: SteveMead, Paul Shanklin and Kimberlyn Booker.

As taxpayers, we need to vote these people off the Board who want to destroy the district and could care less about our students.

Actions are being taken on the public education finance reform by House Bill 3 in the final weeks of the 86th Texas Legislature. the worst have come when under enormous pressure.

One of the biggest priorities announced this session was public education finance reform.

For years Democrats have argued that Texas was not funding our public schools adequately. In 2011, Republican leaders slashed public education by more than $5 billion.

Local school districts across our state took drastic action to replace those funds. This included cutting school programs, laying off teachers, and going to the voters to raise the tax rate.

includes $5,000 pay raises for teachers, $780 million for free, full-day pre-k for low-income students, restructured provisions to provide homeowner property tax relief and most importantly, there will not be a sales tax increase, a previously reported.

HB 3 is not a perfect bill.

Several areas concern education advocates, such as the lack of pay increases for all school employees, the lack of funding for English language learners and poor students and the inclusion of outcome-based merit pay.

However, this bill takes a good step forward for public education. It will have a positive impact on Texas schools, especially in schools located in the Black and Brown neighborhoods in Senate District 13.

Currently, HB 3 is in a conference committee who are ironing out the details to ensure our schools and children have a bright future.

About the Author A native of Houston, Senator Borris L. Miles was elected to the Texas Senate in 2016 after serving four terms in the Texas House of Representatives.

Miles is a successful businessman and developer, owning one of the largest insurance agencies in Texas and redeveloping two commercial blocks. He was first elected to the House in 2006 and became a leading progressive voice.

His legislative initiatives included increased funding for HIV testing, giving second chances to individuals by making it easier to seal their juvenile records, creating an ombudsman office for the juvenile justice department and creating economic development opportunity districts in his community.

For his work, Miles’ recognitions included being named “Star of the Legislative Session” by the Texas Classroom Teachers Association, “Champion of Women’s Health” by Planned Parenthood and an “Urban Agriculture Leader” by the Texas A&M Agrilife Extension. Active in his community, Miles conceived the Hip Hop 4 HIV concert series, which was adopted by the CDC.

ince I have been dealing with the “Accountability” series, I decided to target business owners within our community and Black entrepreneurs alike.

Because the Black community is one of the most neglected in terms of small business owners and major corporations giving back.

We MUST Understand, “Our Money” and “Our Vote” are two of the most powerful tools WE have, so WE should be careful who WE give them to. We MUST Understand any person or entity WE give “Our Money” and “Our Vote” to are amongst those WE empower. This is one of the reasons I am stressing emphasis on holding business owners in Our Community and those WE patronage accountable.

Nowadays, Black folks leave the community, passing up several Black businesses who operate in the community and give back to

the community, only to invest in individuals and businesses who could care less about US or Our Families.

We MUST Understand some of the same people WE choose to support are some of the very same people who were in support of segregation. Sure, they will take your money for their children and grandchildren’s education, but do you think they will offer a scholarship to your children and grandchildren? Chances are, they will not.

For decades, business owners who Do NOT look like US, have built their market off of the strength of the Black Buying Power.

But, when it is time for them to give back they dispense their funds into communities and those who look like them.

Majora Carter once said, “If we are going to be part of the solution, we have to engage the problems.” As true as this statement is, the reality of those who look to make their bucks off of Black folks is that, they could care less about engaging in the problems of Our Communities. Clearly, this is not a show of equal reciprocation.

Especially when Nielsen estimates the, “Black buying power will rise to $1.54 trillion driven by gains in population, income and education in 2019.”

So the facts show WE have the power to use Our Money to hold business owners accountable. Now, it ‘s up to us to assert that power to show them.

America’s Segregated Schools

O

ne week after the 65th anniversary, May 17, of the landmark Brown v. Board of Education landmark school desegregation case, a photo appeared that caused a firestorm of anger and protest. The photo was of four women, none African-American, smiling and grinning while holding a hanging noose.

The women are teachers at a Palmdale, California elementary school. The teachers were promptly suspended and there were parent protests. However, the teacher’s flippant action displaying a symbol of the worst racial violence against African-Americans pounded home again a bitter fact about race and America’s schools.

It’s still a chronic national crisis that in six plus decades since Oliver Brown the parent who emblazoned his name on the Supreme Court school desegregation case has in some respects gotten worse.

Like clockwork, the UCLA Civil Rights Project has released studies timed to commemorate the Brown decision. It repeatedly finds that legions of school dis-

tricts in the South, West and North are more segregated than at the time of the Brown decision. The studies also find that more and more school districts have re-segregated over the past quarter century.

The students in these schools are poorer than students in predominantly, or exclusively White schools.

They do far worse in reading and math tests than nonBlack or Black students at racially mixed schools.

The Black and Latino students who attend racially isolated schools are not in these schools because of Jim Crow segregationist laws, or failed school bussing policies.

Five decades of pro-integration court decisions, limited bussing programs, civil rights legislation, and the election and the appointment of soaring numbers of Blacks and Latinos to boards of education have racially remade public education.

Black and Latino public school superintendents and top administrators are now fixtures in most urban school districts. They are not the problem.

The blame for the chronic school re-segregation is the deep persistence of housing discrimination, poverty and the near universal refusal of federal and state courts to get involved in any more school desegregation cases.

The Supreme Court put the cap on the court’s role as a facilitator of integration in 2007 when it struck down school bussing plans in Se-

attle and Louisville.

Then there’s the continuing flight of White, as well as Black and Latino middle-income persons, to the suburbs. This ensures that even more poor Black and Latino students will be perpetually trapped in segregated schools.

The hodgepodge of panaceas that conservatives delight in ladling out to raise minority achievement levels include more charter schools, school vouchers, a wholesale dump of incompetent teachers and bureaucrats, magnet schools and annual testing.

Some districts advocate scrapping race altogether and using income and other indicators as the means to achieve racially balanced schools.

However, even in the school districts where they have been tried, the results have been mixed. There are many low achieving students in charter, and magnet schools, as well as schools that have opened the doors to school voucher plans just as in some public schools.

Even if the Supreme Court had upheld the Louisville and Seattle integration plans some years ago, it still wouldn’t have changed the racial picture for most urban school districts.

The bitter truth is that while segregated public schools will never again be the law of the land, they remain a fact of the land, and the overwhelming majority of Black and Latino students

will be stuck in segregated schools.

And in those schools that appear to be racially integrated there’s less than meets the eye. Studies show huge gaps in the treatment of Black and Latino students by teachers and administrators. They are more likely to be piled in special education and vocation classes and suspended or expelled at far higher rates than White students.

This points to something that’s often glossed over in the debate about failing inner city public schools.

That is that even segregated schools don’t have to be inherently failing schools.

There are countless examples where teachers and administrators have rolled up their sleeves and worked hard to transform racially segregated schools from permanent monuments to educational failure to models of success.

They fight hard to upgrade the texts and facilities, to get administrators to purchase more computers, and to get the highest caliber teachers, counselors and administrators possible at these schools. They demand that teacher unions actively work to enforce strict professional standards to hold teachers at failing inner city public schools accountable for the performance of their students. This is a fight that must continue.

America is a nation of diversity, and it will get more so in the years to come. The schools will be too.

- James 2:15-17 ESV This scriptural reference is the basis upon which the Order of the Eastern Star Radiance Chapter #1045 was established. The local chapter is consistent of dedicated women and men who sincerely reflect the spirit of fraternal love and desire to work together serving mankind unselfishly in the community.

Worthy Matron, Tiawona Osborne-Davis Mrs. Tiawona Osborne-Davis is the Worthy Matron of this particular Chapter within the Order of the Eastern Stars.

Since as far back as she could remember, she was always fascinated at the sight of an Eastern Star.

As a child, she vividly recalls her great grandmother dressed in white and always thought she was a nurse. After the passing of her great grandmother, the family found her Eastern Star attire and Davis was all the more intrigued. As time progressed, she began researching the Order of the Eastern Star to see if it was something that would suite her.

In doing so, she found she loved the concept of helping others and building a “true Sisterhood”.

Over a year ago, Davis was inducted into the or-

ganization. From starting out as a Chaplain, she was promoted to Worthy Matron within five months.

She was sent to an inactive chapter and immediately began reviving Radiance Chapter #1045.

Since that time, Radiance has been heavily active and involved throughout the community.

During a recent interview, Davis said, “We like to go out and serve the community... We like to go in places that other people are

Having experienced the perils associated with teen pregnancy, the community shower was a special project for Davis. “I understand being a teen mom and definitely know that there is a need within the community,” she said.

Last week on May 18, Radiance hosted a fundraiser in Midtown from 2-4pm, to raise funds for their Annual Back to School Bash. The Back to School Bash is an effort to

Tiawona Osborne-Davis is a native Houstonian, who was raised in the Acreage Home community. During her youth, she encountered a series of obstacles in which she victoriously triumphed. Due to becoming a teen parent, she experienced a bout with homelessness and took a leave from school.

However, with a strong determination to succeed she returned to complete

In the month of April, Radiance hosted the Bumblebee Community Baby Shower in Acreage Home at the Lincoln Park Community Center located at 979 Grenshaw.

The shower was open to the public and the Eastern Stars along with their partners, distributed a wide range of items from diapers to clothing to food and baby furniture for

supply students with tennis shoes, school supplies and other necessities.

The Worthy Matron believes, it is important to assist disadvantaged youth, so that they can go to school comfortably and not have to deal with the pressure of being judged for not having the same as other students.

Davis also shared another project Radiance initiated last year, funding caps and gowns for local graduating seniors.

She said, “When we started with the caps and gowns, we realized a lot of

Most importantly, she commends each member of the Order of the Eastern Stars with a special emphasis on Radiance Chapter #1045. She says, “All of our funding comes from members and most of them are social workers and professionals who work a regular 9 to 5; but they all have a heart and passion to

her studies.

Afterwards, she earned an Associate’s degree in Early Childhood Education from Lone Star- North Harris. Shortly thereafter, she matriculated at Sam Houston University where she achieved a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. Davis went on to obtain a Master’s degree in Counseling from Prairie View A&M University. Most recently, she passed her certification to become a Texas Guardian.
