against a Democratic president. It’s a GOP Congress in which its majority leadership has repeatedly made clear their sole mission is to delay, dither, obstruct, gut and torpedo initiatives and legislation of a Democratic president from the budget to all level appointments. In short, a Congress that pretty much did just that during nearly minute of Obama’s White House tenure.

SCENARIO TWO. Either President Trump, Cruz or Rubio, on their first day in office, faces a Democratic-controlled Senate. Now the script is gently flipped. There is not the hell-bent mission to gut or torpedo their initiatives and legislation.

However, if they carry through on their oft-stated collective campaign, pledge to build a border wall, plow more ground troops in multiple countries, repeal Obamacare, gut or eliminate the IRS, the EPA, the Department of Education, and a litany of other federal agencies, not to mention try to dump anywhere from two to four more strict constructionist, Antonin Scalia- or Clarence Thomas-type judges on the SCOTUS, and throughout the federal judiciary, then the battle-lines will quickly harden. Senate Democrats will be the firewall to their wholesale effort to roll back the 20th Century.

Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell is determined to do everything to prevent scenario number one from happening. He is absolutely horrified at the thought of scenario number two happening. So much so that he convened private meetings with GOP party leaders meeting in which he bluntly said that the GOP must do any and everything to insure a congressional firewall against a Democratic president. He meant the Senate. He took the virtually unheard of step of telling GOP Senate candidates and in-

cumbents whose seats are on the block to feel free to distance themselves from a Trump presidential bid anyway they can if that’s what it takes to win election or reelection.

McConnell can count the numbers, and the numbers say that the GOP must defend 24 seats while the Democrats get the much better of it with 10 seats to defend. A swing of just four seats to the Democratic column will get the Senate back and give Clinton or Sanders some breathing space in trying to at least get a hearing on their legislative agenda and prospective appointments.

It’s those appointments starting right at the top with the SCOTUS that has the GOP in a nervous sweat about Senate control. It, not the House, is the sole determiner of who sits on the high court, the lower court benches and bags key spots in federal agencies.

These are all top-grade posts that initiate, make and implement crucial policy decisions after many congresspersons are long gone. The Senate Majority Leader has virtually dictatorial control over which of the president’s nominees are put to a confirmation vote.

The devastating result of that power was on full brute and naked display with the dozens of judicial and agency posts that were endlessly delayed, or outright sabotaged by the GOP controlled Senate from Attorney General Loretta Lynch to the absolute refusal of McConnell to consider any SCOTUS nominee who Obama will propose to replace Scalia. The stonewall of the nominees was so bad that at one point there were more than 150 nominations for executive and court spots that were pending in the Senate.

That was only part of the ugly story.

PROPERTY TAX WORKSHOPS Property Value Matters

We get a lot of questions at the appraisal district about everything from exemptions and protests to more complicated issues about property ownership.

Interestingly, we find that many people tend to look to their friend or neighbor for answers rather than asking us. When this happens, there can be a lot of wrong information that is passed around a community and people may miss important dates to get problems resolved easily.

For this reason, we started doing property tax workshops throughout the county so we can provide accurate information to property owners.

We frequently partner with the tax assessor-collector’s office so that together, we can give a complete picture of the property tax process for the year.

We also take along an appraiser and exemptions specialist who can connect to our system and look up individual accounts to answer specific questions on the spot.

I wanted to mention these workshops now because we will soon be out in the community doing the workshops. I have already covered in this column some of the information presented in these workshops.

However the workshops are another opportunity to gain an understanding of the Texas property tax system and get your specific questions answered at a location that is convenient for you.

what our role is in the property tax process. We explain the deadlines for filing tax information, exemptions, the protest process, the various ways to file a protest, and what happens during a meeting with an appraiser or during a hearing with the Appraisal Review Board. Then we turn the meeting over to a representative from the tax assessor-collector’s office to discuss billing and collections, options for paying your taxes, penalties for not paying your taxes on time and ways to reduce those penalties.

Essentially, we try to give you the complete property tax picture in about 45 minutes. We will then answer your questions.

Both Harris County Tax AssessorCollector Mike Sullivan and I believe that giving you an opportunity to learn about the property tax system helps you save money because you understand your responsibility in filing certain documents on time.

“BEING FROM THE GHETTO AIN’T SO BAD…” Before I Lay it Down...

Growing up In the Booker T. Washington Housing Projects in Corpus Christi, Texas was not so bad a place for a nine year old Negro child who loved playing outdoors. I don’t remember if I was really “Negro” or “Colored” back in 1968; my grandmother always referred to us as the latter. All I knew was the innocence of a child who also enjoyed watching “Gunsmoke” on a Black and White Magnavox television with three channels. It never occurred to me that the building I lived in had similar designs throughout the 300 unit complex. The floors were brown linoleum tiles crisscrossing in a manner that mimicked a “colored” version of the yellow-brick road in the “Wizard of Oz”.

My siblings and I hopped and skipped like Dorothy and the Tin Man, accompanied by the Scarecrow and Cowardly Lion. No one pretended to be “Toto” because dogs weren’t allowed in the ‘’projects”. Everybody knew that, but life in the “hood” wasn’t so bad. Housing Projects were created by the United States government in order to provide subsidized

assistance to low income households.

The most infamous ones are: Cabrini Green in Chicago; the Marcy Projects in Brooklyn, New York; and the Magnolia Projects in New Orleans, Louisiana according to our friends at NewsOne Media. I’d like to throw in old “Booker T” in Corpus Christi, too, because my family used to live there.

Somehow, I guess through overcrowding and decaying economic conditions, the projects became ghettos. That transition was somewhat smooth because we kids never noticed it. It was always home to us. Sure, we’d witness a good fight or hear about another project being broken into every now and then, but I never saw anything that would give our “ghetto” a bad name. That was in the 60s, though. Plus, we lived in the Deep South. That part of Texas never experienced the kind of crime and drug infestation that other parts of the country had. I don’t think so, at least. But, I was a kid. There are some things that you just blot out and don’t pay too much attention to; “The Green Hornet and Dark Shadows” excluded.

Bernie Sanders mentioned something during the Democratic Debate this past Sunday about “White people not understanding how it is to be poor and living in the ghetto” compared to Blacks.

WHERE ARE YOU RUNNING TO?:

WHY ARE BLACK FOLK ABANDONING THEIR OWN NEIGHBORHOODS FOR SUBURBAN LIVES

During my life I have learned a few things about African-Americans, some of them are positive and many of them are negative. Of all of the things that I know about my people, quite possibly, the one that I know to be the truest is that anytime you attempt to understand how Black folk treat each other or the decisions that we make in regards to each other you will be frustrated beyond measure if you do not first understand that the vast majority of African-Americans are guided by some level of selfhatred in their decision-making and behaviors toward other Black folk.

Trust me when I say that AfricanAmerican self-hatred is manifested in a host of areas and arenas. The latest has been our retreat from areas that we have historically lived in like the 3rd Ward, 5th Ward, Sunnyside, and the list goes on and on and on and on.

It may be a bit misleading to say that we are losing many of the residential areas that we used to dominate. I think that it may be more accurate to say that we are either abandoning or giving these areas away to other groups.

IT DOESN’T TAKE MUCH TO GET BLACK VOTES

At the risk of being totally out of step with today’s Black political elite, I must relate that the manner in which they have attempted to hand deliver the African-American vote to Hillary Clinton is in a word treasonous to the entire race.

There is little doubt that historically African-American voters have followed the directives of their leader-

ship be it religious or political. Far too frequently, such individuals were so entrenched in their political positions that they could be considered Lords controlling serfs chained to the bottom of society without any hope of ever improving their plight.

Although it is difficult to accept, African-Americans have not only been trustworthy, but also reliable in regards to voting for whomever their leadership told them to vote for. White politicians such as Hillary Clinton have realized that they do not have to earn the Black vote, rather they simply need to curry favor with a few crucial Black politicians and the leadership of a few national level Civil Rights

! Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not: the world is ~ Calvin Coolidge full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.

HILLARY HAS LEARNED THE LESSON VERY WELL: Manhood, Race & Culture

African-Americans are once again proving to be that old slow-moving trustworthy and reliable mule that blindly follows their political elite.

When the alluded to leaders endorsed Democratic Presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton for the vast majority of Blacks that sealed the deal; there is apparently no need for them to listen to the candidates for themselves and analyze the issues with an independent mind.

If they did even a surface level investigation they would quickly discover that their self-appointed political leaders are hard-pressed, heck Hillary Clinton herself is hard-pressed, to

There is no doubt that each time a group has arrived in America they have set up within the Black community opened up stores and our people have foolishly patronized their stores and thereby given away the life blood of our community, its dollars.

Let me say this clearly, I do not blame the other groups for finding a way to lift up their Race because it is exactly what they should be attempting to do; it just angers me that it is always the African-American community that they have been able to use for those purposes.

Trust me when I say that I have searched long and hard for an explanation of why other groups have been able to come to America and within one generation, two at the most, have surpassed AfricanAmericans politically, socially, economically, and educationally.

The answer is relatively simple, the political leadership and educational entities within our community have done a ‘piss poor’ job in regards to what we have needed them to do.

On second thought, maybe it is not the political leaders and educators alone who need to be blamed

articulate what she has ever done that makes her deserving of the AfricanAmerican vote.

The manner in which AfricanAmerican elected officials have fallen over themselves to endorse Hillary Clinton despite her failure to articulate a coherent, logical, and believable plan to address the politico economic plight of any segment of the AfricanAmerican community leads one to believe that they have actually sold out their constituents for a yet to be seen reward once Clinton takes over the Oval Office.

It is most certainly time for African-American citizens to stop blindly following their elected officials if such individuals continue to operate as if their personal political interests and aspirations supercede those of their constituents.

We MUST Understand

for this situation, African-American mental health providers should also be taken to task for not providing as of this moment a program that diagnoses our self-hatred as a mental disorder and then develop a plan to treat the malady.

One needs to look no further than the behavior of many educated middle-class African-Americans to understand the drastic need for a mental health intervention. This class, that should be leading our people, has behaved as if their community, the same one that they were reared in, is a place to escape ‘by any means necessary.’

I can think of no other explanation other than self-hatred to explain the manner in which educated, financially well-off Negroes would chose to leave their community and property that has often been in their families for generations.

I challenge any African-American elected official or religious leader who has endorsed Secretary Clinton to please articulate why they have given her their endorsement over Senator Sanders. What policy recommendation, which economic position has tilted your support toward Clinton?

I am absolutely certain that not a single leader will take this challenge to heart and respond. The truth of the matter is that they really do not have a need to respond, because they have for the longest time had the Black vote in their back pocket and there is no one, not me, not you, not their constituents who can sway them from their present course. And there is no doubting that such activities are not only a disservice to their constituents, but also central to their continual languishing in political powerlessness and economic poverty.

Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.” Indeed the omnipotent power in the sense that the 30th President of the United States, Calvin Coolidge described is a gift that can only be attained by highly, self-motivated individuals who strive to soar to the highest heights. Furthermore, if anyone is capable of offering insight as to, “Determination and Persistence” values in respect to the political realm; certainly a former president would be at the top of the list.

While the AfricanAmerican community is encompassed with a plethora of individuals who exhibit such qualities defined by the former president, two will be honored on March 25th.

The Acres Home Chamber for Business and Economic Development located at 6112 Wheatley, 77091; will host its Annual 27th Awards Banquet.

The theme for the Banquet will be, “Determination and Persistence”. Two of Houston’s finest who are coupled with decades of service to the African-American community will be honored at the event.

Acres Home born and grown Mayor Sylvester Turner and Councilwoman Amanda Edwards will be honored at this glorious festivity. Dr. Stephen C. Head, Chancellor of the Lone Star College System will be the keynote speaker. Mr. Dwight Thomas, of A Prime Affair will be responsible for the catering of the event.

MEET HONOREE: MAYOR SYLVESTER TURNER It should come as no secret that reaching the level

of Mayor is no easy feat. One can only assume that acquiring such a position required much volition. Accordingly, AfricanAmerican News&Issues was recently privileged to interview Mayor Turner on matters of, “Determination and Persistence”. The interview with him revealed the following.

AANI: Within your current aspiration in regards for the mayoral seat of Houston, I am sure that you were confronted with many challenges. Amongst those, are there any in particular that you would like to share or elaborate on?

Mayor Turner: “My parents raised nine kids in a two-bedroom house in Acres Homes, neither graduated from high school. My father was a painter for Continental Ensco and cut yards on the weekends. My mother was a maid at the Rice Hotel. We didn’t have much. My father died when I was 13. My mother became what I call ‘the CEO of the Turner Household’ and took over the rearing of all of us kids.”

AANI: In reference to the preceding question is there any insight that you would like to share about the methods in which you used to overcome those challenges?

Mayor Turner: “My mother, despite having a hard life, always told her children that, ‘Tomorrow will be better than today.’ She insisted on our getting an education. She didn’t drive but she found ways for us to get to the library or attend activities. If she prevailed on a neighbor to drive us somewhere, she insisted on paying.

She was my inspiration! When I was accepted at Harvard Law School and needed a loan for tuition, it was my mother to whom I turned to sign the loan papers. So, when I graduated from Harvard, there was one person I wanted there and that was my mom. It was her first

and only airplane ride.”

AANI: Because AfricanAmerican News&Issues is a publication that thrives off of highlighting current and historical realities affecting our communities, we target the Black audience in reference to our readership. Accordingly, is there any advice or words that you would like to offer to members of our community?

Mayor Turner: “I was lucky to grow up in a time when our community looked out for young people. I had role models in my own neighborhood with teachers and pastors, people I could look up to see what a successful life looks like. We must be role models for the next generation. We must show them what education and hard work can achieve. I came from very little to become the mayor of the fourth-largest city in America. I want to see our children aspire to their big dreams and know that if they can dream it, they can do it!”

AANI: Are there any goals, missions or objectives that you are currently working on that you would like our readers to know?

Mayor Turner: “There are so many goals I have as Mayor for Houston and Houstonians. But one important thing I would like to change is the vast income inequality in our city. Too many people are being left behind as Houston grows and prospers. I want everyone to be able to find good-paying jobs, affordable housing and quality schools for their children.”

AANI: Lastly, is there anyone in particular that you would like to thank, for assisting you with the pivotal point that you have reached within your career?

Mayor Turner: “My mother was the one who helped me believe in myself. But I have the entire Acres Homes community to thank, for providing me with the determination to rise to

my current position.”

Finally, Mayor Turner both encourages and reminds the entire City of Houston that, “Together, WE can do great things!” Undoubtedly, Mayor Turner has encountered an enormous amount of obstacles, trials and challenges throughout his career in making the decision to serve as a member in public office. However, as humbly described in his interview he has never forgotten where he came from; neither has he forgotten the people that assisted with enabling him to arrive at that destination. To that effect, throughout the years Mayor Turner has continuously hosted several annual town hall meetings and events that take place in Acres Home. A couple of them include: the annual Acres Homes Juneteenth Parade (commemoration that highlights the best of the best

within the city) and “Family Fun Day” (held the second Saturday of each April). He also, birthed The Urban Youth Baseball Academy, which is sponsored by the Major League Baseball and the Houston Astros. This event occurs at the park named in his honor, the Sylvester Turner Park , located at 2800 West Little York, 77091.

Prior to obtaining his current position, Mayor Turner joined Fulbright and Jaworski Law Firm. Not long afterwards, he established Barnes & Turner Law Firm in 1983. Although he has always been active in the Acres Homes’ community and judicial system, many Houstonians learned of him for the first time in 1988. It was at that time that he was elected to the Texas House of Representatives. For more than two decades the

Honorable Sylvester Turner has dedicated his time, resources, energy and loyalty to not only House District 139 in Harris County; but the State of Texas as a whole. Mayor Turner has well represented the people of our state in Washington, D.C. many times.

His resume is complete with endless awards, honors, recognitions and acknowledgments from a wide variety of publications, agencies and organizations including: the Capitol Inside, Texpatriate, Court-appointed Special Advocate Association (CASA), Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, AARP, Texas Monthly magazine, NAACP of Texas and an array of others. MEET HONOREE: COUNCILWOMAN AMANDA K. EDWARDS Like Mayor Turner, Amanda K. Edwards is a product of the Northwest vicinity of Houston.

Edwards was recently elected to serve as City Council Member for At-Large Position 4. As previously mentioned, Councilwoman Edwards will be honored at the AHCBED’s 27th Annual Awards Banquet for her stance of, “Determination and Persistence”. She set a mark in the history of At-Large electoral races.

The Councilwoman victoriously won the election by a 62% percent majority vote, a margin that no other candidate has ever accomplished. In one of her victory statements to supporters she said her, “campaign was based on moving ALL of Houston forward.”

Since her election she has been strictly focused on completing that task and “implementing that vision at City Hall”.

From as far back as she can remember Councilwoman Edwards has always maintained a sincere passion for, “community building”. According to her biography she, “lost her father to cancer as a teenager, and his battle opened her eyes to serious policy deficiencies in the U.S. health care system and inspired her to affect change by empowering her community.”

She would go on to graduate from

Eisenhower High School in Aldine Independent School District. Later, she earned a Political Science degree from Emory University in Atlanta.

While in college she demonstrated extraordinary academic talents and was a part of various organizations.

She served as, Student Body President for the University. To add to her repertoire she was awarded with a variety of accolades including: the Emory Academic Excellence and Overall Excellence awards, she was also inducted into the Emory University Hall of Fame. Though she was already equipped with a community-building spirit; she further enhanced her knowledge in the area while in Georgia. She worked in community development corporations as a Community Building and Social Change Fellow and in the Georgia State Legislature.

Moving forward, she gained more experience in the political world by working for Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee. Afterwards, she graduated from Harvard Law School. There she “served as a Criminal Justice Institute student attorney, chaired the Harvard Black Law Students Association Spring Conference and was awarded the Elaine Osborne Jacobson Award for her commitment to serving underserved populations in the healthcare law arena.”

Edwards relocated to New Orleans at an attempt to assist residents with the reconstruction after Hurricane Katrina. During her time there she was able to leave her footprints in the sand.

She served as, “judicial law clerk for Federal District Court Judge Ivan L. R. Lemelle and founded Project NOW: The New Orleans Writing Project, which inspired New Orleans youth to empower themselves and their community through the power of writing.”

Upon returning home to Houston, she secured employment with Bracewell & Giuliani, LLP, where she effectively practiced law for years.

In her role there she, “solved complex issues relating to tax-exempt bond financings, public-private partnerships, community development projects, and non-profit organizations”. Though she led a busy schedule practicing law, she still always found time to dedicate hours to community service.

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee is an influential and forceful voice in Washington. She is serving her tenth term (20 years) as a member of the United States House of Representatives. She represents the 18th Congressional District of Texas, centered in Houston, which is the energy capital of the world.

Considered by many as the “Voice of Reason”, she is dedicated to upholding the Constitutional rights of all people.

During Congresswoman Jackson Lee’s tenure in Congress she has served on various Committees including the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Homeland Security, and Judiciary.

In the 110th and 111th Congress, Congresswoman Jackson Lee served as Chairwoman and Ranking Member of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Transportation Security and Infrastructure Protection.

As Chairwoman, Congresswoman Jackson Lee was a leader in support of enhanced technology, better intelligence, increased airplane cargo inspections, increased security for railroads, and implementation of the 9/11 Commission report. She also served as the Ranking Member of the Border and Maritime Security Subcommittee.

Congresswoman Jackson Lee is also a senior Member of the House Judiciary Committee where she is a leader on Bullying Prevention and the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security, and Investigations. She was the lead sponsor of the Bullying Prevention and Intervention Act of 2011 and is leading the fight once again with her current bill HR 5770 with support from producers Harvey Weinstein and Lee Hirsch - producers of the film ‘Bully’.

She also led the fight for passage of the Fair Sentencing Act and this year garnered unanimous support to amend the 2012 Defense Authorization Bill that creates a day of honor for the return of our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

She has authored several immigration bills, such as H.R. 750, the "Save America Comprehensive Immigration Act", which sets forth a comprehensive and humane solution to the immigration problem, introduced legislation to enhance federal enforcement of hate crimes with H.R. 254, the David Ray Hate Crimes Prevention Act, played a significant role in the renewal and reauthorization of the Voting Rights Act, and contributed an amendment to the NASA reauthorization bill that will ensure equal access for minority and economically disadvantaged students to NASA’s education programs. In addition, Congresswoman Jackson Lee launched the Dr. Mae C. Jemison Grant Program to work with institutions serving minorities to bring more women of color in the field of space and aeronautics.

HOUSTON – It has been said that, Metro’s “Dynamite comes in small packages” and METRO’s first Black female Chief of Police, Mrs. Vera Bumpers is no exception to that rule. Girdled with 32 years of service to the METRO Police Department, an humble, gracious and God-fearing personality, Bumpers has made history within the agency.

However, her journey and entitlement was not one that was effortlessly achieved.

She was one of four children born unto Eula and Percy Bumpers in Mobile, Alabama. However, at an early her parents relocated their family to San Antonio. During an interview, Chief Bumpers described she and her family’s experience with the grim and dark era of segregation. “I remember our family being pulled over and all of our stuff being thrown alongside of the highway. HOUSTON – “Let us sacrifice our today so that our children can have a better tomorrow.”

These words were rendered by A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. The Friends of Beulah Shepard Legacy Committee agrees with the 11th president of India and have begun giving back to the community, by targeting area students and awarding them for their talents in writing.

As such, in partnership with The Shepard-Acres Homes Neighborhood Library and the Houston Public Library Foundation, they hosted their 3rd Annual Black History Essay Contest recognizing legends from the Acres Homes’ community. The event was held at the Shepard-Acres Homes Neighborhood Library located at 8501 West Montgomery, 77088.

Mr. Alvin Byrd, served as the Master of Ceremony and Mr. Roy Douglas Malonson, Chairman of the Acres Home Chamber for Business and Economic Development was the guest speaker. Mr. Uchenna Agu, winner of the, “Amazing Race” also made a special guest appearance. Amongst the judges of the essay contest were: Eunice Dotson, Loretta Bailey Moss, Christian Collins, Debra Shepherd, Meller Langford, Lynette Collins and Sharon Rivers.

A sum of 55 students from the Aldine, Klein, Fort Bend Independent School District’s and St. Ambrose Catholic School participated in the Black History contest. Students were given the opportunity to submit essays in reference to anyone in the Acres Homes’ community that they deemed as Black History legends.

Friends of the Beulah Shepard Legacy Committee awarded each student that participated in the contest with a gift card to McDonald’s. Other prizes such as: laptops, 32-inch television, season passes, movie passes and an Xbox were also awarded to

the essay winners.

Winners of the contest were: Grades K-2, 1st Place, Ahmad Richardson, 2nd Place, Aubrey Wickware, 3rd Place, Sannia Bell, Honorary Mention, Langston Jennings all of Anderson Academy; Grades 3-5, 1st Place, Kayley T. Bivens (Anderson Academy), 2nd Place, Ryan Randolph (Houston Academy), 3rd Place, Angilina Jackson, Honorary Mention, Sanjaya Woodley (Kennedy Elementary); Grades 6-8, 1st Place, Yasaar Ellis, 2nd Place, Asha Webster, 3rd Place, Daphne Lopez all of Charles Richard Drew Middle School, Honorary Mentions, April Houston (Sugarland Middle School), Kalyn Cole (St. Ambrose Catholic School), Amani Turner (Houston Academy); Grades 9-12, 1st Place, Donald Peacock (Reagan High School), 2nd Place, Arely Tlamasico, 3rd Place, Vienna Nguyen both of Klein Forest High School and Honorary Mention, Terry Benton (Carver High School).

Chairperson of the committee, Diane Shepard stated that the Essay Contest was a great success. She said, “We enjoyed the richness of the history that the students shared in the essays that were written.” “It was an awesome experience that brought families together”, she exclaimed. She revealed that one could easily conclude that parents actually took the time to sit down with their children to assist them in their efforts.

She said, “There were facts stated about Acres Homes’, like how we once had our own Bus Barn… that’s only history that an older family member would know.” Cassandra RobertsScott, a board member of the committee echoed Shepard’s expression of the rich history that was given in the essays.

The Eagle’s Nest Newspaper MISSION STATEMENT “The faculty and students of Booker T. Washington High School for the Engineering Profession are striving for the successful outcome of its students through learning, companionship, research, and diligence.” they started going to tutorials for their math teacher’s class, Mrs. Chambers. They started talking to each other nonstop, and they learned new things about just how much they had in common. Fun facts about the girls: both of their birthdays are in August, they are Leo’s, they were born prematurely, they have the same name but it is spelled differently, both of their last name starts with an H, they enjoy playing volleyball together and spending time with one another. They impacted each other lives tremendously by keeping each other on track, motivating one another, and being each other’s shoulder to lean on when something goes wrong in either of their lives. When asked what is the importance of having at least one good friend in high school, Katheryn Hall stated, “It is important to have to have at least one good friend in high school because, it allows you to depend on someone else and share your favorite moments with them, and it lets you motivate each other to strive to be something great in life.” Katheryn and Cathryn plan to do whatever it takes to sustain their everlasting friendship.

Well, two young ladies by the name of Katheryn Hall and Cathryn Harrell do, and it is astonishing how their friendship got started, and how it continues to grow. Katheryn and Catheryn met their freshman year at Booker T. Washington High School, they were taking the STAAR test, and discovered they had the same name when their teacher was calling everyone’s name aloud. These two young ladies friendship set off their sophomore year, when

Mr. Ramones, teacher of Engineering Graphics, Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, and Engineering Math was selected for teacher of the month because of his dedication to the engineering and

magnet program for 15 years at Booker T. Washington High School. Mr. Ramones is from the Philippines and is loved by the majority of his students for his humor, innovative teaching techniques and interesting classes. He also helps out and sometimes coordinates the robotics team, which has lead to many awards. He has witnessed his students come back as many different types of engineers, mainly in oil industry, but also aerospace, mechanical, and electrical. He has his bachelors of science in biology and electronics from St. Thomas University in the Philippines.

A junior in his Engineering Graphics class says, “To me, he is an awesome teacher, that teaches students how to do work

by themselves and if you do not understand he still helps you.”

Many other students also have positive views of him. Shemia Anderson, another junior who took him her sophomore year remembers him always joking about the students’ lack of effort by saying, “Minus 100,” but never quitting on them to understand a concept. It has always been impossible to go through one of classes without at least cracking one smile. He arrives early in the day. He is one of the first teachers to arrive in the morning to help students who need the extra help or push.

He is truly dedicated to the success of the student’s at Booker T. Washington, HSEP.

Garden Oaks Montessori, Lovett Elementary School, and the Energy Institute High School were honored Friday with 2016 National Merit awards from Magnet Schools of America, the national association for magnet and themed-based schools.

The three schools are among 258 public magnet schools and programs from across the nation to receive the award. They were selected for their commitment to high academic standards, school diversity, specialized curricula and instruction, family engagement, and community partnerships.

Nearly 400 magnet schools and programs from across the country applied for the award.

“These schools have incredible educators who challenge students every day to excel,” HISD Board President Manuel Rodriguez said.

“In addition to strong neighborhood schools, HISD is committed to providing parents and students school choices that offer unique and innovative learning opportunities and allow our students to be leaders and critical thinkers as we prepare them for college and the workforce as global graduates.”

Yates High School will host a Powerade NCAA youth basketball clinic on Saturday, April 2 from 9 am to 12:30 pm as part of the 2016 NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four Tournament coming to Houston April 2-4. The free youth clinic is open to students in grades 3-8. Participants will learn fun basketball drills, and healthy lifestyle tips from NCAA coaches and student athletes. Each participant will receive a free t-shirt and other promotional items. One of the biggest problems about writing an article for student about the presidential election is that most students do not keep up with politics.

So to remedy that we, here at the Eagle’s Nest, are writing to briefly update you with a few updates for the campaign for the 2016 presidency. The 2016 presidential race has been filled with controversy mainly due to the statements made by Donald Trump which has been considered outrageous by most. Despite outrageous comments made by Donald Trump he is currently leading the Republican race with 384 delegates. Behind Donald Trump is Ted Cruz who has won 300 delegates. One Republican candidate has dropped out of the race which is Ben Carson who was an African American nominee, and best known for separating conjoined twins. event-low of 300 on the second day of the Alcorn State Golf Classic this weekend to win the team competition and claim their first victory of the 2016 calendar year.

At the Duncan Park Golf Course, the Panthers finished the event with a two-day score of 607, five strokes ahead of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. PVAMU had trailed the Golden Lions by three strokes after the first day.

Prairie View A&M’s John Jones was one of two players during the event to card a par71, which he did on the second day of the event to give him a two-day score of 147. Jones finished one stroke behind Daniel Racioppa of host Alcorn State and Brian Cloud of UAPB. Jason Hudson turned in scorecards of 75 on both days of the event to finish with a total score of 150. Harold “Trey” Carter turned in a 75 on the second day of the event, giving him a two-day score of 155.

Vlryn Veal finished with a two-day score of 156, carding a 76 on the first day of the event.

Christian Flowers fired a 166 for the event.

The host Alcorn State Braves finished 28 strokes behind Pine Bluff with a twoday score of 640. LeMoyneOwen in Memphis, Tenn., had a combined team score of 758.

LeMoyne-Owen competes is a Division II member program and competes in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Mississippi Valley State rounded out the five-team field with a combined team score of 941.

The Waller county Crime Stoppers organization is vowing to make 2016 a banner year for closing cases in the Waller County area. To accomplish this, they hope to raise community awareness of the organization, the rewards they both offer and pay and how individual citizens can have a positive impact on the community.

Waller County is full of great citizens that, on occasion, come across information that’ll help the Police, Constables and Sheriff’s department close cases. We want 2016 to be a great year to close as many cases as we can. Each case we close, each reward we pay, will help make Waller County a better and safer place to live for ourselves and our families!!

Waller County 4-H will be having a 4-H County Roundup Showcase on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at the Waller County Extension Office located at 846 6th Street, Hempstead, 77445 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.

The Waller 4-H County Roundup Showcase is an event where our 4-H members will practice for the various contest they will be competing in at District. The District 9 Roundup “Big Time in D9” will be held on April 29-30, 2016.

The 4-H & Youth Development program of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and the Cooperative Extension Program in the Waller County Extension Office would like to invite everyone to our Waller County 4-H 66th Annual BBQ Fundraiser. The 4-H BBQ Fundraiser will be held on April 24, 2016 at the Waller County Fairgrounds in Hempstead from 11am until 1:30pm.

Lane, Derek Irvin, and Kenneth Hines for their publication in a top tier international peer-reviewed journal. Their article, which is a book review on Dr. Fred Bonner’s work Building on Resilience, Models and Frameworks of Black Male Success Across the P-20 Pipeline, is published in the International Journal for Talent Development and Creativity.

Lane is a doctoral candidate from the Whitlowe R. Green College of Education at Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) and also a staff member in the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships.

Stated Lane, “It is with honor and gratitude that we were afforded

Bonner’s book, which was laden with esteem scholars sharing their research and strategies on progressing the educational landscape for Black males. The book is noteworthy because resiliency among Black males is such a vital and important topic. Furthermore, publishing in a top tier journal is an extraordinary accomplishment for me as a Ph. D. student.”

While Lane has published and presented on financial aid in relation to persistence at a Historically Black College/University (HBCU) as well as other issues in higher education, her dissertation focus is LGBQT equity in an HBCU context.
